Legend raves: Liverpool should sign 'brilliant' £13m playmaker this summer. Carra agrees

Everton star James McCarthy seems to be popular amongst ex-Reds, Dietmar Hamann has joined Jamie Carragher in urging Liverpool to consider signing the midfielder this summer.

Speaking to The Mirror this week, Hamann admitted he's a 'big fan' of McCarthy, and suggested that he's the ideal man to replace outgoing captain Steven Gerrard. He explained:

"He [McCarthy] has done so well this season. Whether he's a player Liverpool are interested in him remains but to be seen but...somebody has to step up and perform at the highest every single week because that's what will be missing with Steven Gerrard gone."

In March, Carra hailed McCarthy as a 'brilliant player', and enthused:

“If there was one player I could take from Everton to Liverpool it would be James McCarthy. I love him as a player, and love watching him, but to be classed as one of the best in the league he needs more goals and assists".

McCarthy - who cost Everton £13m - has rejected a move to Anfield THREE times, in the past, so the ship has surely sailed on this deal:

* 2007: The BBC reported that McCarthy rejected an offer from Rafa Benitez. Explaining the youngster's decision, his Agent, Bill McMurdo explained:

"They [LFC] agreed to meet Hamilton's asking price, but he has decided that he wants to stay for another year. I can't fault his judgement. He has only just left school and is from a close family"

* 2010: McCarthy chose Wigan over the Reds, a decision that pleased Roberto Martinez, who noted:

"I have always been a big admirer of James, and I was delighted when he made that rather strange decision not to go to a top, top club like Liverpool. I think that decision is being proved right now.”

* 2011: Liverpool entered talks to sign McCarthy in 2011, and a source close to the talks said:

"It [the transfer deal] is 90 per cent done, all sides now seem to accept it is going to happen and it's a matter of everyone trying to get the best deal"

Speculation over the midfielder arose again during the January 2013 transfer window, and when asked about interest from Liverpool and Arsenal, Wigan boss Roberto Martinez conceded that when the time comes, 'we'll never stop him [McCarthy] from leaving'.

The last thing Liverpool need is yet another midfielder who doesn't score or create enough goals, and McCarthy's creative record is pitiful:

* 3 goals/6 assists in 73 games for Everton.
* 8 goals/8 assists in 133 games for Wigan.
* Goal every 20 games | Assist every 16.7 games.
* Goal/assist every 9.1 games.

Thanks but no thanks, and after rejecting Anfield three times, McCarthy doesn't (IMO) deserve another chance to play for Liverpool.

  1. I have been reading this transfer and it is the most ridiculous thing ever! We need someone to replace Gerrard and we go for someone who is two levels below the one we trying to replace. These pundits needs to keep quiet and if they know so much about transfers they should be working for teams as recruiters.

  2. Everton would never sell to us unless we offered ridiculous money (£20m plus), and like Jaimie says he just doesn't do enough creatively to justify that sort of money.

  3. So why recommend him to us!

  4. Wow Messi ... Sterling watch and learn son !

  5. Amazing match, Bayern got absolutely obliterated without Robben and Ribery. Boateng not looking too good either.

  6. He is a decent player. He should have been bought instead of Allen if we are talking like that. We should hopefully be aiming higher.

  7. Watched Real? How about stubborn manager to persist with the mistake of playing a cb at dm with 30 mill dm on the bench?

  8. There are top players two levels behind Steven, this one is not comparable..

  9. Off topic... anyone else see the Suarez video chat when he surprises the cancer patient?

Simply awesome! Google it if you have not seen it already.

  10. For 180K, Sterling needs to produce at least half of Messi's Magic.

  11. I almost cried... it ain't much of a trouble for him, but I can only imagine what it means for the kid..

    ReplyDelete
  12. He does have his great moments along with the crazy ones.

    ReplyDelete
  13. nonsense. half of Messi magic and Sterling would've been on 22 goals now, that is impossible to ask for..

    ReplyDelete
  14. I guess for 35K we get his current output right?

    ReplyDelete
  15. Seriously though. I cannot imagine why would he put himself under this type of pressure. Asking to be paid this amount of money means that he will be expected to "carry" the team on his back. How is he going to do that when he walked away from taking penalties in crunch time.

  16. Why should we need him? Another Allen in team who scores maybe a goal or assist once in two years .NO THANKS!

    ReplyDelete
  17. where from you are getting this number? he rejected 100, didn't say how much he wants.

    ReplyDelete
  18. the best output in the team, by the way..

  19. Except Allen is english, so we won't overpay for this guy.

  20. Bale as a striker? Square peg round......hehe.......well you know.

  21. A definite no from me for Ancellotti..

  22. He is obviously a good manager but people create myths around these fellas. Like they wouldn't throw a player under the bus. They all do it. They never blame others for mistakes and take credit when it goes well. Nope, they all do that as well. They never playe players out of position. YEP they do that too. They don't have "favourites", of course they do.

When people scrutinise they realise the person is a person and flawed. So many people create these myths about succesful managers, either beacuse they are successful for your team and you either forgive them their diisgressions or have confirmation bias and not see them or they manage another team and all you see is the success and not the man. In short people are ignorant in both ways, stupid or delusional. God bless us.

  23. Look at Luis Enrique. Won nothing as a manager, has one of the top jobs in the world. Just beat Pep's Bayern and tops La Liga. Did he need success before this? Did he need win trophies with other team? No. He needed probably the best attack in the world. Two of the world's best players and one who is just on the outskirts. Pep is lauded by tactic heads as being close to a genius but he was beaten by a better side.

We all try to be clever and right when we talk about football but truth is there are a milion things going on and the reason we all think we are right is because we are all, at least a bit wrong. Nothing is as simple as we think or want it to be.

  24. Here here. And do you know what else helped Enrique get to this position? Patience, when everyone was calling for his head last November/December. Now they look extremely strong. They have Pep's style but now have some strength/bite too. They were so so good tonight. Shame these teams were separated as it would have been a great final (if Ribery/Robben made it back in time as well).

  25. They bought bite in the summer.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Haha - they sure did ;)

  27. I always liked Suarez as a 'off-the-field' person. Always seemed genuinely humble and a family man. Obviously, he has his well-documented incidents on the field but I always liked him and felt it was just his fight-for-everything desire that made him cross the line, as opposed to be a nasty person.

  28. He's overrated he is.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Well he's earned the right to be stubborn. League titles in 3 countries trophies in four not to mention 3 champions league trophies before he's 60 mind u.
He's the big boss no doubt
    Exceptional player he was
    Superlative manager he is.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Dude he was a player at the club. And since lvg barca really haven't cared who their manager is. They just buy a group of stars and give them to a manager. If it works out u keep your job if it doesn't work out u get fired. Most of their recent managers were great players and not great managers before they got the barca job. From Frank Rijkaard to Enrique none were special managers before they got the job.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Well typically most english players are overpaid for, and I did know that, but in general terms of the UK we spend more for players from there

  32. Two Marquee signings are needed this summer:
One world class and the other is class and quality but not yet world class:

    Marquee signing : One
The World class signing needed this summer is CM:

    Either:

    T Alcantara Of Bayern Munich
    M Verrratti Of PSG
    Koke Of A Madrid

One of these three world class midfielders all under 25 needs to be brought to club this summer at all costs. ( To replace the class and quality of Alonso that we have not replaced 7 years on still and our outgoing captain S Gerrard)

Marquee Signing 2: M Depay Of PSV for £20-£26M RWF / LWF

NO Mccarthy, NO Milner and No Delph all average central midfielders who do not create or score enough goals.

  33. You'd have thought after rejecting Liverpool three times that Liverpool FC would get the message (that's if they do come in for him).

    ReplyDelete
  34. Yes. So my point is that he still beat Pep who has won things. Why? Like you said they have great players. This was a commentary on our club. People want to throw blame in one direction only. When it is not that simple.

    ReplyDelete
  35. So you assuming he was never stubborn before being successful?

    ReplyDelete
  36. Honestly though bayer are not known for a strong defence despite what their defensive record in the bundusliga would have u believe. They have one of the weakest defences personnel wise among the teams in the semis. And also they don't have dat many goalscorers despite what their game against porto at home would have u believe. Injury plagued as they are now with ribery and robben gone. There was only one outcome of this game. Defence has never been pep's strong suit, most people don't notice this most times because teams are almost always willing to let them have the ball. But notice when a team with a bit of cutting edge attacks them they suffer.
I honestly think if rodgers had the personel at barca he'd be right up there with the best of managers. Suarez, neymer and messi ? Could things get any easier?

    ReplyDelete
  37. Well dats debatable. He knows what he wants and he's succeed that way. I've heard president perez has a man crush on him.
He's been trying to get him for years. So if u were him and u know the president really wants u, I bet u would demand total control of how u manage the team on the pitch, with no one questioning him. Maybe being stubborn is how he does things but it's made him the best manager out there by far all before he's 60. So if it ain't broke and u keep winning with it why on earth would u risk change.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Oh and it is that simple I blame Ayre and rodgers. Most people do

    ReplyDelete
  39. And flopped at PSG. And now he screwed up with the most powerful club on earth. Not saying he is not good, just that I would rather give our outstanding youngster another year rather than getting him..

    ReplyDelete
  40. Wow he's flopped. ......After winning the ligue 1 every season he was there. And winning two trophies in the first season at the biggest club in the world. Don't be silly boss. He might just win the league and cl this season.

    ReplyDelete
  41. How many times does he have to reject you before you get it: McCarthy wouldn't touch the Shite with a giant's femur.

    ReplyDelete
  42. No. It's not simple at all. Basically my whole point.

    ReplyDelete
  43. They have great defenders and the best keeper in the world.
