Ex-Reds are lining up to heap praise on alleged Liverpool target Ross Barkley, and LFC legend Dietmar Hamann has joined the growing chorus of admiration for the coveted England midfielder.
In April, Liverpool were linked with an improbable £38m summer move for Barkley (swiftly dismissed by Everton boss Roberto Martinez), and after watching Barkley's performance against Ecuador this week, Hamann raved:
"If Roy was unsure about one or two positions for the Italy game then [Ross] Barkley has to be a must. The kid is special. Reminds me of Ballack"
Ex-Reds Jamie Redknapp, Mark Lawrenson, and Jamie Carragher are also huge fans of Barkley. In a recent column for the Daily Mail Redknapp enthused:
"He [Barkley] is magnificent. We’ve not had a player in this country since Gazza who can run the length of the pitch with the ball without ever looking under pressure. It’s as if the ball is glued to his foot".
Lawro is equally impressed:
"The more first-team action [Barkley] gets, the more we are seeing he is pure gold. Whether he is still at Goodison or moves on, he should develop into a massive midfield presence"
Jamie Carragher added:
“There has been a lot of talk on Merseyside about Ross. We talk about the players that will come through and ask who is going to replace Steven Gerrard? Who is going to replace Frank Lampard? That goal on Saturday was Gerrard-like"
I would absolutely love to see Liverpool sign Barkley. Forget Lallana - the 20-year old has the potential to have a Gerrard-like impact on a club, and Rodgers should make him Liverpool's number one transfer target. Yes, it's unlikely that he'd leave for Everton's biggest rivals, but an LFC offer of Lucas, Allen, and £15m-£20 could be enough to seal the deal.
Everton have been linked with Allen - who played under Roberto Martinez at Swansea - a few times over the last year, and with Gareth Barry's situation up-in-the-air, they may need a dedicated defensive-midfielder, and Lucas fits the bill.
At the very least, it's worth a try.
Last season, Barkley regularly played the number ten role, with Pienaar and Mirallas alongside him, and the trio are an effective attacking weapon for Everton.
Coutinho plays the same role for Liverpool, but if forced to choose between the two players, who would you rather have at Anfield? Who is the better player of the two, and who has the most potential?

Oh my f*cking goodness this is not going to happen
ReplyDeleteSuarez - Kone + £20m swap? No, exactly. Now stop posting crap.
Hahaha Fucking Deluded Liverpool Fans........
ReplyDeleteNo, seriously, stop posting crap rumours. Post things that have substance.
ReplyDeleteTough question, can't decide between Barkley and Coutinho.... how about both!
ReplyDeleteBarkley is an absolute monster of a player. I would absolutely love to have him at Liverpool. Both players plus that amount of money would be a solid deal. It would also free up our midfield a bit with the signing of Can
ReplyDeleteThe only way to get Barkely would be a straight swap for Suarez, so your little poll at the bottom should ask who would we rather have in the LFC team..?
ReplyDeleteSuarez
Barkley
Why will Everton sell him to us...no realistic chance wht so ever
ReplyDeleteNeed to address some things here.
ReplyDelete1.Never going to happen
2.Jamie Redknapp is a plank, saying its the 1st player since gazza who can run the length of the pitch looking comfortable. Oxlade is better at beating players (IMO)
3.Coutinho over Barkley its close, but there is something about Coutinho i just love. Maybe it's the fact that I am a biased Liverpool fan.
YNWA JFT96
right answer
ReplyDeleteDid a Liverpool fan really write this? You're an embarrassment to your football club if you think this would actually happen.
ReplyDeletethis is like discussing rooney coming to liverpool
ReplyDeletethe only way barkley will join is if he joins city or chelsea then flops
or if his contract runs out like sol cambell
or if liverpool offer a price everto cant refuse we are talking 50m
Everyone has a price.
ReplyDeleteWould love to see us sign Barkley but I feel it's highly improbable
ReplyDeleteForget Lallana - forget Fabregas - forget the lot regarding our offensive!
ReplyDeleteNext summer - we need to buy 1 player and 1 player only:
ROSS 'FKING' BARKLEY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I dont care it we splash 40 mill. on the lad to convince Everton to sell!
He will be the next BIG thing - mark my words!
Brilliant
- just recently he assisted Lambert against Ecuador with a nice touch.
He plays waay more mature and with way more composure than a boy of his
age should be doing!
This window needs: Aurier (RB), Moreno (LB) -
maybe Lovren and Shaq, but then save up the budget for next summer and
ROSS 'FKING' BARKLEY!
Sell the deadwood, play Lotto, do something - idc - he is a MUST!
DREAM TEAM 2014/2015:
Migs
Aurier, Illori/Skrtel Sahko Moreno
Gerrard
Henderson Barkley
Sterling Suarez Sturridge
Bench: Coutinho, Allen, Ibe, Can, Lambert, Flanno, Illori/Skrtel, - THE INVINCIBLES!
50m - do it!
ReplyDeleteI watch a lot of Everton and I'd have to guess that a number of people have only seen the best of Barkley. He has had a number of very ineffectual performances and his immaturity is often manifest.
ReplyDeleteI've no doubt he will become an excellent player and has already some excellent performances under his belt (encouragingly in some of the big games too- City, Arsenal, us) but as of now I'd still take Couts over him. Coutinho has a way to go too, mind. As of now though I'd say he is most consistently reliable (and hardly a cautious kind of reliable either).
He's like a Good Rooney.......
ReplyDeleteAgain I never knew his middle name before.
ReplyDeleteIf Suarez did go, wouldn't mind barkley as part of the reinvestment if I'm honest! Don't know any top class strikers kicking around that'd like to come to Liverpool though
ReplyDeleteIt is a rather entertaining comment if you look at it in that way!
ReplyDeleteI agree. I'll take both... :-)
ReplyDeletehe will be, and already is a great player. Can't see it happening. I would like him to stay put, it is better to beat Everton that has a good team rather than winning easy with their star players in manu or Chelsea...
ReplyDeleteAny news on Lallana?
ReplyDeleteAdam Griffin i disagree with you not entirely but somewhat. The reason i say this is that he is coming from a farely decent team in spain in the shape of Sevilla, they are this years Europa League winners and they have had a good season domestically as well. One person said that he will have a similar impact as Luis Alberto did coming from the same club, but one has to bare in mind that Luis Alberto was bought from Sevilla's B team while on the other hand Alberto Moreno is a starter for Sevilla's first team. Luis Alberto was bought on his potential to become a good player while Alberto Moreno is one of the finer established young player in his role at left back and now he has a European trophy in his CV. At just 21 with liverpool playing in Europe in the form of Champions League football next season i am sure his experience coming up against some of the better sides in europe will definitely be beneficial to liverpool. Jose Enriques injury problems and age maybe something that the manager now has to consider as he may not have the athleticism to go up and down a football pitch for an entire match. Just food for thought.
ReplyDeleteWith respect, I did not argue that about Sterling. Nowhere in my article did I state, hint, or imply that Sterling isn't worth £30m.
ReplyDelete* I argued that Sturridge is worth more than Sterling
* I also said that a case could be made for Sterling's £36m valuation, but doubted that any club would pay it.
Coutinho got my vote, too. He has the grace of a ballerina and the execution of a silent assassin. His ability to read the game and spot/slot a key through pass is magnificent; his work off the ball is brilliant more so than not (gave Ar5ena1 a helluva time). I agree he has a way to go development-wise but I believe Coutinho fully-realized will be far superior to Barkley fully-realized.
ReplyDeleteAnd Barkly should play instead of Looney..
ReplyDeleteToo late!
ReplyDeleteThe team has a few holes to fill at the moment and even if Everton were happy to sell to Liverpool which they wont the money spent would be better spent elsewhere this season.
ReplyDeleteThere is no point in it unless Suarez is sold for a big fee and they can splash the cash.
I have no doubt Barkley will be a top player but so much at the moment is the next season not all about a few seasons down the track.
If we don't get champions league football next season it's back to square one. We need proven talent at the moment. Still hoping we sign someone like Pedro/Sanchez rather than Barkley/Shaqiri! I have always wanted the club to get shaqiri though so him and Pedro/Sanchez would be nice!
ReplyDeleteRed Will, Rakitic(26) i have said club should go all and get for £20-£33M. He is better player than Fabregas(27) and year younger. And he would be in the £120,000 bracket but if G Johnson(29) is currently on £110,000 a week . I Rakitic(26) will come to club and justify his £120-£150,000 a week wages.
ReplyDeleteI hope Alberto is sent on loan rather than sold. He looks like he has something. It could work out in a season or two. Aspas, however......
ReplyDeleteHe didn't look that good for Ingerlund the other night. The mancs can take him. And it's 27 million at least.
ReplyDeleteAs a friend of Ross' father Peter, I can guarantee that there is no chance of Ross ever joining LFC.
ReplyDeletePeople are talking figures of £50million, as If all it takes is a large amount if money to persuade Everton and Barkley to make the deal happen, it simply won't.
Ross is a born Evertonian who would never consider playing for LFC.
If there was to be any movement, it would be to a club of his choice on the continent. Think Madrid or Munich.
dude relax......when rafa was incharge everyone accused jamie that he was anti rafa too....he is just another fan with a strong opinion. thats all.(ps i am not a fan of jamie's arguing style)
ReplyDeleteHas he got the Experience and the qualities of a 'Liverpool' Fullback?
ReplyDeleteB Rodgers should offer Seville £43M for both I Rakitic(26) and A Moreno(21) and seal the deal. If Barcelona plan to offer just 20 euros, we should offer £26M for him and hopefully he will see sense and join us. As He will just warm the bench at Barcelona like Fabregas, Mascherano and Song have for last two seasons.
ReplyDeleteBusquets Xavi and Iniesta are the main stays in the Barcelona midfield , the sooner class quality centre midfielders linked with Barcelona realise that the better it is for them as Busquets, Xavi and Iniesta have 2 to three years of class quality football in them. I Rakitic(26) can warm the bench at Nou Camp or Be a first team regular at Anfield
The issue is not which would we prefer Coutinho or Barkley, it should be do we really want Barkley. They can play in the same 11, but that may mean playing 1 forward with those two behind or coming in from wide. We are in the CL now, which means it is not just about having a first 11, it is about having a good squad. Which means you must have players that can come off the bench and make a difference, and the squad will be rotated, all players getting their fair share of starts depending on the games. Doubt Everton will sell him to us for anything less that a astronomical price, but we can put in a cheeky bid and if we are talking about swapping players, I would given them Lucas and Allen without thinking twice.
ReplyDeleteSakho is reasonably vocal. But no-one understands him I think - Hope he comes back to us with much better command of the English language. Can't remember which match it was but saw him shouting and waving his arms forward at directions for the back line to move up. either they did not listen to him or did not understand him, after a couple of waves from his arms he admitted defeat and played along with the rest of the defense in dropping very deep. Sakho looks to be a good defender despite his pass ratio success he seems to make the guy in Texas Chain Saw look like Mickey Mouse when he is possession of the ball.
ReplyDeleteAgree he's brilliant and a "bargain" at that price but it does not mean we have made a mistake he might always have preferred Barcelona
ReplyDeleteTrue but so is Messi and Ronaldo and we ain't going to get them either
ReplyDeleteHow is it an excuse? You cannot just say I will have him and he has to join us
ReplyDeleteJust read his comments - forget him move on quickly.
ReplyDeleteWell Louie that's sad to hear because it makes his father sound quite childish and immature.
ReplyDeleteI cant think of any set of supporters outside of Everton who think more of Ross Barkley than Liverpool fans.
We all want to see him succeed as much as any Everton fan, because he is after all, a local lad.
I dont think any club anywhere, would value Ross as high as Liverpool do. For his father to not understand that seems quite incredulous.
I don't claim to know his father, but I'd love to ask him just what club other than Everton, would put his sons interest above all others in a bid to develop and be successful?
Madrid or Munich? Don't think so.
We are going to slowly nurture him into Stevie's replacement
ReplyDeleteDominating games in the centre of the park in european football is key to success and having solid back 4, as if we can get to knock out stages. Going away from home our engine room and defence will need to on point.
ReplyDeleteI Rakitic(26) is world class, no other midfield player in our team/squad who is world class apart from S Gerrard(34) who is ageing and his best years are behind him.
The other centre midfielders we have at club are either good or average, but not world class. Dominating the midfield in europe and having good back 4 is key in Europe. We have attack to always score goals. But reason we were so good in Europe in Benitez was we had solid back 4 and dominative centre midfield.
So many people looking to drop big monies on Barkley, don't get me wrong I like the guy, he's very positive when he has the ball, and can use both feet as well.
ReplyDeletehaving said that though people are saying buy him for £50 million...i'm impressed with him but not more so than I was with Wilshere when he popped on to the scene, £50 million is a lot to spend on someone who has the potential to be world class and not actually world class.
Not that anyone asked but what I would do with £50 million is invest in a keeper who wants to be at the club and who can actually push Mignolet for his place, a left back who I hope is Moreno and a centre back called Eder Alvarez Balanta. he is in the columbia squad and he looks like he has it all already and would try get fabregas for the supposed fee of £30 million who is world class proven in the premiership and probably got his best years ahead of him still considering the type of player he is. for me this would be a better spent £50 Million. YNWA JFT96
I'd like to say I didn't say it, I only wrote it but that would be wrong on two counts.
ReplyDeleteYou see, I dictate all my posts, so I did in fact say "mustn't" and I didn't write it, since I dictate my posts to a wee chimp. I speak it and he writes it and corrects my syntax. Chimps have great syntax and all-round grammar.
They're the best for that type of thing. It is why they always get hired (by the thousand, as I understand it) to type up the complete works of Shakespeare.
Muahahahhhaaahahahah!!! Do your masturbation in private please. We've no reason to want to watch.
ReplyDeleteNot the fairest question in the world, and certainly couldn't be used to determine anything meaningful.
ReplyDeleteCoutinho could, in an ideal world, play alongside Barkley, but if forced to choose between the two, it would be Barkley all the way for me
FILIBUSTER!
ReplyDeleteI'll allow it
ReplyDeleteLook dream on kopites !!!! Swap barkley 4 Suarez????
ReplyDelete50million and the rest deluded fans in England
ReplyDeleteGo back to playing computer games you idiot! Everton would want more than 50m once he shines at the world cup. Allen? Lucas? Marttinez wants quality players... not your mistakes! When you wake and smell the coffee, i'll have 2 sugars in mine... Pathetic article!
ReplyDeleteFully agree with all that has been said here :-)
ReplyDeleteYes that's true I never knew he is now on loan to Malaga, thanks. Let's see how he fairs. Is he going to come back from the abyss after this loan? Susos return will be interesting... Will he stay let's see.
ReplyDeleteI agree. The problem I think is that theyr paying him €8 million per Year!! Just no way we can compete with that! That is just stupid money!
ReplyDeleteYeh. And the €8 million per year helps.
ReplyDeleteHaha! Nice post. Pretty much agree with your points made.
ReplyDeleteFor Munchen to have a buy back clause during his sale, i believe there is something special in his game.
ReplyDeleteLot of money to pay for a relatively unknown quantity. Let's hope he turns out better than Glen Johnson did for big money. Johnson was not as consistent as Finnan or Arbeloa.
ReplyDeleteRodgers has been terrific last season but his signings are worrying. Lallana at £25m is vastly overpriced when you see players like Alexi Sanchez going for that.
ReplyDeleteMore worrying is that Rodgers wanted the likes of Dempsey and Sigursson at Spurs. I'd prefer he signed more established players now we're in the Champions League. Signing Emre Can is like Luis Alberto last summer; we're told about their 'potential'. But we need players for now, and we should be able to attract higher quality proven players.
Suarez is reported to be on £200K per week......I'll let you do the maths.
ReplyDeleteYes. Which is fair enough. Ranked 3rd most valuable player in the game after Messi and Ronaldo. Sanchez (as high as I rate him) didn't even make the top 20! Doesn't seem right he should walk in earning more than Suarez. (I believe they're paid for the season, not year). At those kinds of wages would upset the pay scale at Anfield. Which usually leads to dressing room distraction and other behind the scenes 'nuisances'.
ReplyDeleteI'd of liked him at Anfield but not on that wage!
Given the difference between euros and pounds Suarez is still earning rather more than Rakitic even on a 9 month season, So it appears we can pay that sort of money if we want to.
ReplyDeletethink though even if we were prepared to match the wages he would not have come to us.
Yep. Fair point. And that damn sunny climate of Spain and Italy helps too!
ReplyDelete
