It's hard to believe, but Luis Suarez - Liverpool FC's proverbial 'Man of Steel' - has finally succumbed to injury. With the World Cup looming, it's a terrible blow for Suarez, but the even bigger tragedy is that England now have an increased chance of avoiding humiliation in the group stage. Goddamnit!
According to Uruguay broadcaster Tenfield.
* Suarez will have keyhole surgery Today to repair damage to his meniscus (knee cartilage).
* His recovery is estimated to range from 15 days to a minimum of four weeks.
Realistically, Suarez - who has a £70m release clause in his contract - has a slight chance of playing some part in the tournament, but it's highly unlikely he'll be fit enough to face England.
As a comparison, it took Man Utd defender Phil Jones 10 weeks to recover from the same injury in 2012, and Fernando Torres spent 7 weeks on the sidelines in 2010. As such, it's not looking good for Suarez.
This is a disaster for the World Cup, IMO. You always want to see the best players perform on the biggest stage, and after his amazing season, Suarez was primed to take the World Cup by storm.
I'm a a regular critic of his antics, but like most fans of football, I love watching Suarez play. He's a genius footballer, and the World Cup will be poorer without him.
Additionally, we now face the prospect of England's turgid brand of anti-football progressing into the second round of the competition, though with any luck, the presence of five LFC players in the squad will make Hodgson's team somewhat tolerable to watch.
Why couldn't this happen to Wayne Rooney?

Hahah love the "why couldnt this happen to rooney" Part!
ReplyDeleteWho knows jaimie it will probably Liverpool players soon ;-)
I hope this doesn't start the same spiral that started for Torres and hopefully he recovers and this time we get the Man of Admentium back when he returns!!!
ReplyDeleteTorres lost his blistering pace. I don't think there is much danger of that with Suarez.
ReplyDeleteI think £30 mill is way over priced too . If that shaqiri had a British passport his fee would triple too.id be willing to pay that amount for Sanchez who is apparently available for under 25 mill which I think is good value
ReplyDeleteHahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha Karma's a bitch.
ReplyDeleteI understand all your hate for England JK....and I'm an Aussie!!!
ReplyDeleteEver since I was a small boy I have been looking forward to each World Cup with the hope of seeing Scotland unleash their unique, attractive, attacking and skillful football on the world. I am 96 now and still waiting.........
ReplyDeleteHaha. I may be Scottish, but even I don't harbour any desire to see Scotland play at the World Cup (!)
ReplyDeleteIt's the closest you'll get to a woman so enjoy!
ReplyDeleteYes, that was uncalled for, but you kicked it off with your comment in response to Ghost Rider.
ReplyDeleteBoohoohoo
ReplyDeleteIn my reply to Ghost Rider he also said AllMightyRedhed was complaining and that some people can never be happy.
ReplyDeleteIn that case, what exactly was wrong with my comment?
Hey I'm English and patriotic, but I'd also love to see this happen to Wayne Rooney. It would affect our position in the World Cup if he did so suck it up. Suarez deserves everything he gets, now I hope Skrtel and Sturridge get injured too.
ReplyDeleteYou seen how the Irish fared at the Euro's so !
ReplyDeleteJohn Terry took only 2 weeks with the same injury.
ReplyDeleteYour wife is called Karma?
ReplyDeleteRegardless of my allegiance to England, I wanted to see Suarez play every game; he deserves to light up the tournament after the season he's had, so this is a real shame. However, the guy is a machine, I wouldn't rule him out just yet.
ReplyDeleteOnly his surgeon will be able to accurately guess the recovery time. It could be a couple of weeks or, like you say, as many as 10. I think his injury history is no accident, he's very well conditioned and I expect him to heal quickly. He can be back in the gym the day after the surgery and after that it's all about controlling inflammation. It would a horrible outcome for him to miss the tournament.
ReplyDeleteWe could lay off England a bit. They'll probably end up with all 5 Liverpool squad players in the team and it would take a remarkable effort from Hodgson to have them playing boring football. If he has any sense he'll be listening to the team shrink who will be passing on a few tips on why these guys are doing so well at Liverpool. Set them up to play attacking football and score goals, let the rest of the game take care of itself. I find the idea of supporting them a disturbing concept but it might just be nice to put that aside for a few weeks and just enjoy the game.
I'm actually looking forward to watching England play for the first time in years. No expectation, no over-hype, just a bunch of quite talented, young players (Rooney aside of course) who have nothing to lose and will hopefully give it their best shot.
ReplyDeleteWe had this same conversation many times: you often leave snide, one-line comments when you don't agree with someone. How exactly does saying 'moaning for the sake of moaning' further the discussion or promote debate? It doesn't. People can moan all they like; if you disagree, then do so with counter arguments.
ReplyDeleteSo really you spend your whole life hating yourself?
ReplyDeleteI consider ourselves bigger and meaner versions of Brits ;)
ReplyDeleteI only need to be English for that ......
ReplyDeleteIt really would not have mattered how I responded to AllMightyRed's comment when reading the childish response of his/her reply to me. If I had replied directly to AllMightyRed saying that Dnipro were the ones who did not sign off the paperwork then AllMightyRed would still argue that Ayre/FSG are a bunch of buffoons.
ReplyDeleteAll I did was agree with Ghost Rider's reply to AllMightyRed. Ghost Rider is saying that AllMightyRed is complaining and I replied to Ghost Rider that some people moan just for the sake of it. I do not see what the problem is here.
I've explained what the problem is, and that's that. Please stop posting pointless one-liners that do not promote/further debate.
ReplyDeleteSuarez often doesn't play well against top sides. So he should get a hatrick against England.
ReplyDeleteSorry, i feel for you as you have no english players in your team.
ReplyDelete...
ReplyDeleteLooks like the world cups Australias for taking now.
ReplyDeleteSeriously doubt he will miss any games. Apparently the injury is not new, but was felt in the last game(s) of the season, but he played through the pain.
ReplyDeleteSo no worries, we can still watch him tear England and Italy to shreds, and hopefully Costa Rica too - though I'm sure the team can cope with out him.
Shame on you Stuart you can tell the kids only about 5 by his typing leave him alone.
ReplyDeleteSend a god damn card and a cake to YAYA!!! I think soon enough your players would come out and say they need to be spoon fed by the owner because they're too BIG for the club.
ReplyDeleteYou know knee injuries are the worst to happen to a football player and they're recurring and lets hope this is just a one time thing with Suarez because after all he's the best on his current form.
ReplyDeleteProven players are not necessary. Players with proven quality are all that we need - 'reputations' just come with big price tags but don't really guarantee anything really.
ReplyDeleteNor does Premier League experience (read: Stewart Downing...)
hope it scares RM off but I doubt it
ReplyDeleteHodgson...attacking football....don't quite see how those 2 things go together.
ReplyDeletethink he means he doesn't hate aussies...half hates english half hates scots can't see there's any left of him to hate aussies
ReplyDeleteyep they breed em in Manchester
ReplyDeleteI think city blue is Liam Gallagher
ReplyDeleteoooops yes there is and they made the squad
ReplyDeleteTheres only 1 player in their first 11...
ReplyDeleteThere is at least another 10%. When have you ever heard a player say he has given less than 110%.....
ReplyDeleteYou couldnt give a toss about the 'poxy World Cup'??? Do you even like football? Its the biggest stage in the world for footballers to showcase their talents and it happens only ONCE every FOUR YEARS. I apologize in advance if this is considered a 'sniping comment' but WOW.
ReplyDeleteIn 1994, Maradona was sent home from the World Cup and, as a football fan, I feel 'short-changed'. Yeah he took drugs (recreational NOT play enhancements) but I felt deprived of seeing arguably the best footballing talent in the world ON the world's stage. IMHO Suarez deserves to be on the 'World's Stage'.
ReplyDeleteLol! I know. Great minds and all that.. Just hope the transfer committee agree too!!
