BR's New target: LFC to bid for 'spectacular' €40m star if he quits Euro giants

Brendan Rodgers is reportedly considering a rather improbable summer move for Bayern Munich star Javi Martinez, who is also coveted by Arsenal, and Manchester City.

According to The Mirror:

"Liverpool are to join the bidding if Javi Martinez leaves Bayern Munich this summer.

"Martinez wasn’t on Rodgers’ original list of targets, but he will [bid] if he becomes available"

German newspaper Bild claims that Martinez is 'disillusioned' at Bayern, and is 'unhappy' with his start ratio under Pep Guardiola.

Martinez - who cost Bayern €40m in 2012 - made just 20 starts (all competitions) for Bayern last season, a 42% reduction on the 2012-13 season, so it's easy to understand why the Spaniard might be a little miffed.

However, when asked about his future last week, Martinez played down rumours of his alleged disillusionment. He told reporters:

"I am just focused on staying on [at Bayern Munich]. I believe the club is delighted about my services. I have never spoken about leaving the club. If the club is wanting me to stay on, I will stay on"

Martinez missed 29 games through injury last season, which surely explains his lack of starts under Guardiola, who may also perceive the Spaniard to be somewhat unreliable. After all, how can you build a team around a player who is always injured?

Barcelona star Sergio Busquets is a huge fan of Martinez, and in an interview last season, he told Barca's official website:

"Javi Martinez has spectacular physical power. He is all over the pitch, he covers a lot of ground and recovers a lot of balls. He is Bayern’s lungs"

I doubt there's any merit to this particular rumour, but Martinez can play central defence or defensive-mid, and that kind of versatility is catnip to Brendan Rodgers.

If Martinez does become available, should LFC try and sign him?

  1. If he's available he's a must bid, but the chances of him actually being available are slim and a bidding war might ensue that I'd be reluctant to top even at his level. Worth a punt though, and if we get a good bid in I don't see how he could reject it besides money.

  3. so jamie, you make so many claims that our current players should be offloaded because of there fitness problems, yet condone the signing of someone who has been injured for most the season? just a question my friend.

  4. Still don't understand why we are not in for Fabregas. There's a Barca firesale and deals to be done.

For me - this is a no brainer...

  7. LFC need to CLEAR THE DECKS - 15 players MUST LEAVE - I include youth and reserves - they are just never going to make it - we all know who they are more or less AND this needs to start happening ASAP. B R IS A GENIUS

  8. Perhaps you should read the article properly before making such inaccurate statements? No where in this post have I stated LFC should sign Martinez.

We don't have to bid any players available from big clubs. Players that get game time for bigger teams tend to cost a lot more. For 40m Euros, we can get Mateo Kovacic, Son Heung Min and add a little more to that figure we can get in someone like Onazi Ogenyi/Romulo/Kongogbia/Seb Rode. Money in such a way will be better spent as we will strengthen a number of areas than just 1.

  11. Suarez INJURED!!! I can't believe its happening to him and that too a knee one when WC is looming over. Very very very SAD! :(

  12. If he wasn’t going to sign for the newly crowned Champions last summer, especially when they told him they were going to build a team around him I doubt he'll come to us. He's Arsenal through and through and I can't see him back-tracking on that stance.
But I do like where your head is at; we should be going for the best availible out there...sure we will lose out on most but there have been times we've come out on top going after widely coveted players - Macherano and Torres come into mind. Just hope the board are looking at that calibre of player as well this off-season and aren't being too "conservative" with their transfer list

  13. i was asking the question, would you want us to sign him? i don't see an inaccuracy about my post, dude.

  14. kovacic would be my number one target for midfield. he rips it up in seria a, though i don't know how available he would be or how much he would cost.

  15. Like every transfer window, we are linked to almost every single player. So far it's been Lallana, Cole, Lovren, Martinez, Kono, Mascherano, Moreno, Pedro, M'bia, Diame and many more.

  16. Javi Martinez would be the BEST signing since Luis Suarez. I will go nuts if we sign him.

  17. Hence, for your sake I am afraid BR won't go ahead with this as this it'd send a wrong statement where fans are going nuts because of the club signing SOME player!!!
