'O Polvo' to Anfield? LFC contact Agent of €17m Brazilian as BR plans new offer.

In December, Portuguese newspaper A Bola claimed that Liverpool had 'made contact' with Agent of Porto defensive midfielder Fernando Francisco Reges to discuss the possibility of a move to Anfield. Nothing came of the interest during the January transfer window, but new reports in Portugal suggest that the Reds are lining up a summer deal.

Portuguese newspaper Jornal Record claims:

"Record knows that Fernando's Agent has maintained contact with Liverpool, who are preparing an offer for the end of the season"

This is not the first time Liverpool have been linked Fernando. Kenny Dalglish considered a move in 2011, and at the time, the Daily Mail reported:

"Liverpool are weighing up a move for Fernando Reges, and the knee ligament injury suffered by Lucas Leiva means defensive midfield has become a priority"

Everton agreed a €17m deal for Fernando towards the end of the summer transfer window, and Blues boss Roberto Martinez even attended a work-permit hearing, but the transfer ultimately fell through.

Discussing Fernando's future recently, Antonio Araujo - the player's Agent - confirmed that the Portuguese "can leave Portugal in January or at the end of the season"

Known as 'Polvo' (The Octopus) by Porto's fans, Fernando's contract expires in June 2017, and when asked recently about the relevance of his nickname, he told FIFA.com:

"I remember people started calling me 'Polvo' (Octopus) but I didn’t really understand why. Later they told me it was because I seemed to be everywhere and had lots of legs. It was an encouraging sign of recognition for me."

Despite his excellent performances for Porto, a place in the Brazil squad still eludes Fernando, and it's something that mystifies his Porto team-mates. Earlier this year, Striker Lucho Gonzalez barked:

"No one ever talks about Fernando, but he’s a player who’s shown he can play at international level. I don’t understand why he’s not a first-choice in the Brazil side.”

It's something that also frustrated Fernando himself, as he told FIFA.com recently:

“I’m still hopeful. I get letters from fans and they ask me about the national team, and all I can say is that I’m going to keep on working. I play like a European now and not at all like a Brazilian holding midfielder.”

Ironically, fellow Brazilian Lucas Leiva could be responsible for Fernando's lack of international caps. They're both the same age (26), but Lucas has 26 caps for Brazil, and given then fact they're both defensive midfielders, one of them will inevitably have to miss out, and it seems like its Fernando.

The newly-anointed Portuguese citizen could get his revenge, though, if he signs for Liverpool. The Reds definitely need some serious competition for Lucas in the centre of midfield, and Fernando would have the opportunity to usurp his compatriot.

Fernando's new contract will ensure that Porto don't lose him for nothing this summer if, as expected, clubs come knocking. One thing's for sure, Fernando is a winner. At 26, he already has 12 major trophies to his name, including four league titles, and a Europa League triumph. Liverpool need winners, and Fernando seems to fit the bill.

Worth a bid...?

  1. I guess you would know that he signed a new deal at Porto.

  2. An extension, yes. Probably to ensure he doesn't leave for nothing.

  3. So why would you mention that he will be available for free in summer? Also, his new contract has 30mn buyout clause. Out of LFC budget IMO.

  5. It confirms to me that he 'll not come to LFC. Actually, I am afraid if anybody 'll come in June, for that the plot is old now - LFC 'll chase lot of players & unless they are less than 10mn, there 'll always be some complexity to crack the deal but at the end in 24hrs time someone 'll get the player & LFC 'll buy someone "better, younger & cheaper" to loan the player within 3 months. I believe, Ayre is paid good money to make a buffoon out of himself & goof up big transfer deals, so that the yanks can get away with an excuse.

It's not that they don't have the money, they just don't understand Club Football. Otherwise, from this position, won't have jeopardize our chance of CL football (& 50mn+ earning) for this Jan transfer mockeries. We just needed an winger & a DM (this man Octopus or M' Villa could have won us the league, not only the CL ticket).

  6. Some very forgetful fans on here and you sir are one of them. Do you remember the shit we were in before our new owners come in and saved us from oblivion. We could have went the same way as rangers, leeds, because of the previous owners overpending and payin money out we didnt have. We should be grateful we are in the position we are in and have got the owners we have got who run the club properly. Pluss we dont really need a winger not top priority in my eyes we need a decent center mid dm and a left back an right back are problem aint wingers were second highest scorers in the league. Stop bringin us down actually look at wat has been achieved over last couple of seasons on and off the pitch and stop dreaming of an overnight success it will come but in time.

  8. The talk is that he and Mangala will go to City in the summer. Makes sense, they need quality squad players in both of those positions.
