'Play-acting': Dalglish blasts Prem star for cheating in spat with £15m LFC flop

Liverpool legend Kenny Dalglish has slammed Chico Flores and Howard Webb for conspiring to get Andy Carroll sent off in West Ham's recent 2-0 victory over Swansea City.

Carroll - who cost West Ham £15m - received his marching orders for allegedly elbowing the Swansea defender, and in his column for The Mirror today, Dalglish slated Webb's 'bad decision', and castigated Flores for 'play-acting'. He scathed:

"It seems ironic now that Howard Webb did not send off Nigel de Jong in the World Cup Final when he kicked Xabi Alonso in the chest.

"He gives a guy a yellow for that and sends off Andy Carroll when there was clearly no intent. Flores made it difficult for Webb with his histrionics and his play-acting".

Is Dalglish right? Did Carroll have any intent, or did he just hide it well?

Hot-headed Flores' disgraceful reaction clearly contributed to Webb's decision. The defender went down like he'd been shot in the face, yet the video fails to show a level of contact justifying such an overwrought reaction.

Reacting to the FA's refusal to rescind the decision, West Ham co-chairman David Gold insisted that West Ham have been 'badly treated, and threatened further legal action. He told the BBC:

"There is nowhere to go other than to seek some kind of legal redress. Most judgements are not made by three people, they are made by 12 - that's why they are called juries"

I really hope West Ham pursue this all the way to the Hight Court, and ultimately seek Judicial Review of the decision. It irritates the hell out of me that clubs have to abide by a set out outdated, paternalistic 'rules', many of which are unfair, and not fit-for-purpose. It would be fantastic for the FA to be overruled on this issue, and it form a great basis for much needed discussion and change in the game.

I also can't wait for the day when a Premier League manager takes legal action to challenge the FA's cretinous rule that referees cannot be criticised. It's absolutely ridiculous that a manager can be fined and/or receive a touchline ban for daring to highlight the the sub-par performance of a referee. Whatever happened to freedom of speech? Why does that fundamental freedom cease to exist in the world of football?

If a referee gets a decision blatantly wrong, he/she *should* be criticised. All this guff about refs having 'the hardest job in football' is just rubbish. If refs can't hack it, let them quit, and be replaced by those who can take the heat. No one forces Webb et al to be referees, and I'm sure there are thousands of people out there who'd be happy to do the job and be held accountable for mistakes.

In the microcosm of football, these overly restrictive 'rules' (handed down by woefully out-of-touch old men with white hair), create a localised, footballing version of the 'Nanny State', and the sooner they're abolished, the better.

To summarise: I want anarchy!

  1. I agree JK, poor West Brom will feel hard done by (vs Chelski) esp if they get relegated by a difference of 2 points! All this talk of things even out if the season is balderdash! The top clubs are favoured by refs, players with a reputation will be penalised more severely!

  2. I agree totally that most of the FA rules are not fit for purpose. This funny saying about "refs doing a difficult" job makes me sick to the stomach. Are refs doing a greater job than medical doctors who save lives and who get the stick when standards slip? Agreed refs need some form of protection, but it's disgraceful atimes what refs are allowed to get away with.

  3. Talking rubbish again without viewing the footage of the video Chico posted to show how he was injured. He wasn't injured from Carroll's arm, when Chico lands on his right leg, his head comes down towards his knee and he smashes his face into his own knee then as he lifts his head Carroll's arm catches the top of his head. He certainly wasn't acting from Carroll's swing of the arm. If you saw it different then you've obviously not seen the full video from the reverse angle. Poor reporting again and typical of the media and pundits to jump on players without viewing the evidence first.

  4. Not often I agree with KD but this is at least a first

  6. What a load of Crap, there was intent you can see Carroll looking at Howard webb as he swung his arm.I admit it did not catch Chico in the face but it could have.

  7. try watching cheato left arm was he not swinging it towards Caroll too?

  8. Watch the video then make a report. If you don't like what you see then don't make it up. Why not post my original comments, there's no bad language just facts, then let others judge correctly. Thanks

  9. it doesn't matter if you make valid points; if you can't do so without insults/sniping, your comment will get deleted. Repost your points in the right manner and they'll stay live. If you want to engage in playground 'debate', then there are plenty of other sites out there to do that.

  10. The game is in the gutter because there is no respect for referees. They should be protected in this manner and they should be protected on the pitch. Sin bin for offenders

So we then pursue the infuriating policy of refereal infallibility. It's a horrendously difficult job, but decisions should just be accepted as they happen and realize that the referee is impartial and has a split second to decide what to do. Technology is SIMPLE answer

I think Carrol wants to do Chico, after being climbed all over, but he Just about holds back.

Chico is an embarrassment and has surely cheated in this instance, feigning injury. Webb bottled the easiest decision of his career, De Jong v Alonso, and possibly thought this was a red. But it should have been overturned.

  11. Yes Chico's play acting was embarrassing and pathetic. Nobody argues with that, but if you swing your arm at an opponent like that, it's a red. Full stop. Stop complaining WHU you are making yourselves look as pathetic as Chico rolling around on the floor.

  12. Chico went down like he just got exposed to radiation or as if he was auditioning for the lead role in Platoon....maybe he just thought it was 'Chico time....' Daglish comes to Carolls defence once again but I agree with him on this one even if I do believe Caroll did intend to hit him...

  13. Howard Webb has lost the plot for a long time now. The FA are just protecting their white-horse WC ref who they refuse to admit is shit.

  14. I personally think there was no intent. To me it looked like Carroll swung his body round to face Webb and possibly ask why there wasn't a foul on him, and in swinging his body round caught Chico in the HAIR, causing his NOSE to hurt

  15. ..with you on this one Jamie....hated the guy at lfc but FA is just plain wrong on this matter, ...it has to start somewhere...to Anarchy then...

  16. That is EXTREMELY harsh. He didn't mean to swing his arm at him; he was just trying to regain balance.
Tell me. If you saw another man do that, but the player who's been *tapped* by the arm just normally continued on like nothing happened (like he should be doing), would you give a red card? I highly doubt it.
    Get some perspective dude!

  17. No chance. He plays for the best team in the world. I don't know what would motivate him to come here.

  18. because fullham want the extra rest, theyre scared to face us,after what we did to arsenal.they fear what might be coming their way.hahahaha.if other games in london go on,then so should this one

  19. i agree with what you say.but we needed to bring 2 players in during the transfer window.one DM i would like to see fernando or mvilla and a decent LB.to cover for injuries and add quality to the squad. My opinion is with our best 11 we can beat anyone, but we have been hit with injuries to key players and needed to add these players to ensure we keep our form right up to the end of the season, and dont run out of legs. These additions couldve been done without breaking the bank imo.we allegedly went in for willian at 30m so the money is there you would think.as far as the overnight success goes,we have waited over 20yrs for it,so you cant really blame supporters for craving it.especially ones like myself who have grown up with LFC being a powerhouse.we just want the good days back, and yes i think we are on the right path,GO REDS!

  20. Such a shame if West Ham appeals this incident to the High Court...it makes all referees in England look dumb..

  22. I thought he had all but signed at Citeh?

  23. I'm sorry but it's right under Webb's nose. The fact that he still cannot see he's being conned shows what a crap referee he is.

  24. That may very well be true but they walk a very very thin line. Success of our current season is depending on an injury prone striker, our ageing captain, an on again off again creative midfielder and Suarez. If Sturridge picks up another knock on England duty, Gerrard tears something and Coutinho goes off the boil again, it will become very difficult. It also seems completely random at times. We would have spent 30 million on Willian but would not go higher than 8 for Salah. We spent 9 million on Mignolet but allowed Chelski to pick up Courtois for the same amount. We do not overspend on players who have made their mark but we do spend 15 million on two reserves from Sevilla and Sporting Lisbon who have done nothing. We would not pay 11 million for Salah but are willing to pay four million more for Konoplyanka. And there a ton of examples like that. Sometimes it seems that the price and the position dictate the player we buy. For example, we need a striker. We have Sturridge and Suarez so a backup striker can not cost more than 10 million. Who is available for that money? Iago Aspas. Does he have CL experience? A proven track record in a top league? Not important. The price and the position are right. Buy him. Nearly the end of the transfer window and they want 15 million for him? We'll pay. That's what it feels like to me.

  25. Our previous owners didn't bring debt to the club by spending it on players though. Sure rangers and Leeds went down but rangers record transfer fee paid is 12 million on Flo so that didn't break their back either. Like I said below, the transfer policy appears completely random. We bought all these players in the last two years to strengthen the squad but the truth of it all is that 7 of the 15 players brought in so far are likely to be out the door this summer (or are gone already) and 18 have already been sold since Rodgers got the job. So our squad has only become thinner. Personally, I'm happy with that though. I am perfectly fine with the fact that our backup right backs are all youth products. So if we spend heavily on two or three players straight into the first team this summer that would be great but I'm afraid it will be more penny pinching and that will cost us in the long run.
