Former Liverpool defender John Scales has thrown his support behind the Reds' bid to sign Dnipro attacker Yevhen Konoplyanka.
In an interview yesterday, Scales - an integral part of Roy Evans' exciting team in the mid-1990s - hailed the Ukrainian as 'very talented', and an 'intelligent player', adding:
"He's very much in the style of Arjen Robben in that he likes cutting in from wide areas.
"He's very quick and looks to me like an intelligent player. If he did come, he would be a great acquisition."
Latest developments:
* Liverpool MD Ian Ayre is currently in the Ukraine trying to convince Konoplyanka to sign for the club, and according to The Times:
Konoplyanka's UK representative has also provided the following update:
With just over twelve hours to go, the Konoplyanka is still not completed, and unless he's having a medical in the Ukraine, it looks the the Reds will have to complete the signing without a medical (unless, of course, Konoplyanka is on his way to the UK right now).

How much time does it take to travel from Ukraine to London/Liverpool??
ReplyDeleteha, it's like the distance from one side of my country to the other
ReplyDeleteIt would take about 4 hours.
ReplyDelete5 hours?
ReplyDeleteOk, so still some scope for Ayre to bargain.
ReplyDeleteYep. There's about 12 hours left. Give him another 4 or so to finalise. Get him on the plane, which is 4-5 hours. That's 8-9 hours burned, with 3-4 still remaining in england!
ReplyDeleteSeems like you have a good understanding of Oz!
ReplyDeleteEasier said than done, eh? They should bloody seal the deal IMO because if we fail this time, I doubt any club/player will consider our club seriously.
ReplyDeleteJK, i would like to hear your personal opinion. Who do you want Liverpool to sign today? M'vila, De Jong, Portillo (Malaga), and Konoplanka. These are the names I saw on newsnow sources being linked to Liverpool. Hope to hear from you!
ReplyDeleteI know a bit, few (many actually) Indians there, including my relatives. Always wanted to visit the place, hopefully in near future :-) maybe Liverpool will drop by during preseason again :-)
ReplyDeleteDeadline day.
ReplyDeleteRead, hope, refresh, repeat.
Read, hope, refresh, repeat.
STILL BARGAINING ? HOW CAN YOU BLAME IF CHELSEA WAS ABLE TO BYPASS US AND SIGN SALAH.
ReplyDeleteAyre is too old for such job, i think he needs to be changed.
ReplyDeleteJames Lippett, Kono's English representative, has said: "Hoping to broker a big deal. Some of the complications surrounding transfers are literally unbelievable. “The English club is doing everything possible to get the deal done.”
ReplyDeleteHe's 50! Geez if that's too old?!! I've heard some reasons for getting rid of the guy but fair play that gets the award for most irrelevant.
ReplyDeleteDeal is done, will be confirmed later today.
ReplyDeleteand you know this because?
ReplyDeletePersonally I'm unsure about this one. In an ideal world you'd prefer someone with a bit more class and end product in place of Sterling, but he has definitely earned his place in the team. It's just not what we need right now, and the last thing we need is more attacking players being accommodated onto the pitch, one of Coutinho/Sterling will have to go, if not both in a 433 with Allen and Lucas returning. Plus, what about Ibe and Suso, would hate to see their development stunted or in Suso's case leave the club.
ReplyDeleteI only want a midfielder this window.
If I had to choose, I'd take M'Vila, mainly because he plays in a position that is more of a priority to film (IMO). Who would you take?
ReplyDeleteMidfielder obviously a priority, I don't know why Liverpool don't see it that way. Maybe they would delay it till summer but they could have delayed attacking signing till summer instead?
ReplyDeleteBut I am happy. As I wanted Liverpool to sign a DM but an attacking option is still better than nothing..!!
I don't think it's better than nothing. No doubt Konoplyanka has quality but we just don't need a player in this position right now. We also have Borini who is doing well at Sunderland.
ReplyDeleteIf we spend considerably now (and 16M or whatever is quite an outlay) it's just an excuse not to spend in the Summer window, particularly with several loan players returning to the club.
January is typically a window where you buy what you need. It's arguably why prices are inflated and clubs are reluctant to sell.
City have reportedly had a 6M bid accepted for the DM Fernando. Given our situation I hope the club is not unaware about this.
I think we will see Coutinho play more in the middle now, he has played wide at times this season and been alot less affective when moved wide, having another winger means that if one of Sturridge, Suarez, Sterling or Konoplyanka is out we do not have to alter the system, it also give good option of one of those 4 on the bench to make an impact late on.
ReplyDeleteBasically it makes Coutinho the extra CM and stops him having to cover the wide positions. You just have to look at the Derby to see how well Coutinho can do playing the slighty more forward central role with Gerrard and Henderson / Lucas and Allen
A DMC. Fernando from Porto.
ReplyDeleteHe is in Malaga training so the medical is not a problem
ReplyDeleteIs there anything other than the usual rumour regarding M'Vila? Can't find anything really concrete to link us. Seems odd that with Lucas out, and when he's not at least needing competition, and with both M'Vila and Fernando Regis as options we haven't done anything about it. The added bonus of Kono is that it probably shuts the door totally to Moses.
ReplyDeleteI read somewhere that he will have a medical in the Ukraine, that way all we need to do is email contract paperwork to various authorites and get his signature.
ReplyDeleteNot sure about that?, didn't they fly back to the Ukraine yesterday?.
ReplyDeleteHe gets about a bit. Still these 3D printers are brilliant!
ReplyDeleteSomeone set up a spoof Tony Barrett Twitter account saying a fee was agreed...............loons!!!
ReplyDeleteWe could just 3D print a Konoplyanka.
ReplyDeleteATTA boy!!!
ReplyDeleteHow about printing a Yann M'Vila......LOL.
ReplyDeleteI'll have to have a word with me mam about pulling that stuff....she's a tinker!
ReplyDeleteJK!!!...........................Where is Konoplyanka now???
ReplyDelete:-)
ReplyDeleteDon't even mention it. FSG will buy 'future Ayre' now!
ReplyDeleteAs long as we don't 1D anything!!!!!
ReplyDeleteWith Kono's excellent pace on one side and Sterling on the other we can scare teams into dropping deeper to prevent the ball over the top, giving our midfield more space. So I'm all for this plus it allows Coutinho to play centrally where his lack of pace is not relevant.
ReplyDeleteI wish we were in the hunt for Fernando though, or M'Villa if not.
At the end of the day, you all love the D.
ReplyDeleteAnother wasted collection, if we are to sign only one player this window. We badly need cover for our defense line - be it loan or buy, a DM was must. I would have taken Ma Villa, De Jong or Romolu ahead of this guy any time. Even that Agger-Inler swap was acceptable. But, just when Moses is showing some form, we are spending 15mn+ for a similar position. We already have blocked around 18mn for Aspas & Borini.
ReplyDeleteI strongly feel that now we should hire a Director of Football (Not the Commolli style), who 'll look after the transfer issues along with the Manager.
I'd have gone for Ma Baker...but she's insisted on bringing her four sons.
ReplyDeleteSome of the complications are unbelievable,’ an agent close to the deal told the Daily Mirror.
ReplyDeleteHowever, some sources in Ukraine are claiming Konoplyanka has now left Dnipro’s training camp in Spain, and is boarding a plane set for England.
Moses had a good half of a game. Hardly 'showing some form'
ReplyDeleteWHERE THE HELL IS HE ACTUALLY? SPAIN, UKRAINE, UK, MARS????
ReplyDeleteGod knows?.....................now they say he is in Spain still but boarding a flight soon?..................this is like a spy movie!!!
ReplyDeleteAyre was originally Commercial Director if memory serves me right. In fairness to him he appears to have done a decent job on that side of the business. But for transfers I agree, we need someone like Daniel Levy.
ReplyDeleteStill do not think we should get overly excited about a deal for Kono. Time is ticking...
ReplyDeleteYou are right as the Ukranian press say he is still in Spain................should be a lot easier then?
ReplyDeleteGreat to hear from you pal. Yeah, I would love to see a DM signing in Mvila. Young at 23 with international experience and will give a lot of protection in our vulnerable back four. Will also steady the midfield. I don't mind if comes on loan than make a permanent transfer next season with "Option to Buy" clause. Right now, Konoplayanka deal seems complicated and Ian Ayre better don't screw this up. I would really be disappointed if LFC didn't bring any new faces after deadline for transfer window closes. I'm still surprised about how BR spent lots of money on Aspas, Alberto, Llori (combined est 21m) and have yet to kick in nor start games on the trot. With that money, we could buy Fernando (Porto) 7m and another player for first team. Exactly 11 more hours to go, how are things going to unfold?
ReplyDeleteHow can Konoplyanka and Sterling fit into the same team as Sturridge, Suarez and Coutinho? It won't work. One of the two will have to sit it out.
ReplyDeleteIf Gerrard and Henderson are to start every game, which is practically a certainty, that leaves four spaces: Sturridge and Suarez will take two of those, which leaves two more to fit in Kono, Sterling, and Coutinho.
Just as well it's not hereditary.... :-)
ReplyDeleteenuf time to finalise this then hop to Russia to get Romulo.
ReplyDeleteGrobbelaar nust be getting nervous. His reputation is on the line.....
ReplyDeleteGrobbelar's reputation is already a bit murky.
ReplyDeleteUkraine and Russia are close. Ayre should be in the air by now to sign Romulo.hahahaha
ReplyDeleteI am glad you didn't say 'the Ukraine'. My wife is from Kiev (pronounced 'Keev' not 'Kee-ev' and she hates it when people say 'the Ukraine'. The women in Kiev are gorgeous btw. Lovely city too.
ReplyDeleteI think Fernando went to City, £6m
ReplyDeleteBen Smith @BenSmithBBC
ReplyDeleteThere are no plans to fly Konoplyanka back to UK. If #LFC do this deal for him, it will all be done out in Ukraine. #DeadlineDay
Unless he went three at the back again? Not saying he would just that'd be a way.
ReplyDeletethere's about 10.5 hours left man...
ReplyDeleteThe alliterative transfer window...
ReplyDeleteFrom Mata, to Salah, to Konoplyanka !?
If he's in Spain, then its for Portillo,
ReplyDeleteAyre only does the personal terms once a fee is agreed, the lawyers do the rest, after the Medical, so does not need to stay in Ukraine
What's that about?
ReplyDeleteThink they're talking about Kono not Ayre fella. I have a question though, does Zaf Iqbal do the medical? if so maybe the more illuminating thing is where he is?
ReplyDeletecognito
ReplyDeleteAs long as it's not "disposed"
ReplyDeleteYou are mistaking Ian Ayre for Chuck Norris.
ReplyDeletePity that one of Jamie's many contacts couldn't have got a homing device fitted to him - would help with all these rumours ....... or prob he really has gone on holiday ;-)
ReplyDeleteRead a rumour from a very reliable source that we are trying to get 2 deals done and maybe even a third.
ReplyDeleteHolding thumbs at least one gets completed!
Only three! What are they playing at?
ReplyDeleteIs he Indian/Pakistani? Just curious.
ReplyDeleteMaybe he meant John Henry?
ReplyDeleteProbably Liverpool haggling over the airfare to fly him here???..................LOL.
ReplyDeleteWhat's the sauce? Barbecue or ketchup?
ReplyDeleteWorcestershire :-)
ReplyDeleteHear Fernando is going cheap .....
ReplyDeleteI think City got Fernando, £6m, and massive wages,
ReplyDeleteKurt Zouma joined Chelsea, loaned back till summer,
Aspas I agree about, but they reckon if you get 40% of your signings correct, that is success.
City, £6m,
ReplyDeleteread he's going to Man City
ReplyDeleteThat stuff is good with a meat pie
ReplyDeleteThe Kono deal is getting closer. Starting to become the theme among all news sources.
ReplyDelete"He's very much in the style of Arjen Robben". Very true, the one foot dribbling, Kono with his right, Robben with his left. But, it looks like he can do stuff with his left too, so all good.
ReplyDeleteUnderstood to have agreed personal terms.
ReplyDeleteSpurs expected to launch one last hijack bid of 50 million pounds.
Seriously that ayre must resign tomorrow, the world is laughing at him, hes been the most useless md in football for some years now, a real tragic disgrace. I guess most fans wont even enjoy this one IF it happens, every day its been like a punch in the face after getting up from bed.
ReplyDeletePeter O rourke Skynews deadline day, personal terms agreed with Kono, 5 and a half year deal, sounds good, but who knows,
ReplyDelete"Liverpool edging closer to signing Dnipro winger Yevhen Konoplyanka. Personal terms agreed set to sign 5.5 year deal". #LFC #skydeadlineday
9:18 PM - 31 Jan 2014
I need to sleep. Happy Deadline day everyone. Let us pray for a signing. Please please please. Please........please. Come on Ayre.
ReplyDeleteI don't get this at all.
ReplyDeleteWHAT'S TAKING SO BLOODY LONG TO CONCLUDE THIS?!?!
WHAT IS SO BLOODY COMPLICATED ABOUT THIS DEAL ?!?!
We could attack whichever was the weaker side of the opposition team. The only way to get them both in is with 3 at the back or if Coutinho is dropped for Kono as he also plays as an AM
ReplyDeleteTheir president doesn't want to sell.
ReplyDeleteNOW he tells us.....
Reports saying deal has fallen through.
ReplyDelete
