Transfer Update: BR reveals latest news on £16m deal, & LFC chase £10m Prem star

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has provided an update on the club's pursuit of £16m Dnipro attacker Yehven Konoplyanka.

When asked about the transfer in his pre-West Brom press conference today, Rodgers said:

"There's no update [on Konoplyanka] yet.

"Obviously, there's an interest in the player. We'll see how it evolves, but it's a bit complicated.

"There are staff over there. It happened very quickly, and the timeline makes it difficult. We'll see what we can do".

As I've argued several times over the last couple of days, this has all the hallmarks of a panic buy, and Rodgers' comments seem to confirm this. He states that everything 'happened very quickly', which suggests that the Reds only initiated contact with Dnipro after the Salah deal fell through.

Liverpool may have scouted Konoplyanka in the past, but it appears that active attempts to sign the player have only started in the last few days. As such, it's no surprise that it's proving 'complicated' to conclude a deal in such a tight timeframe.

In other news, Man City have reportedly knocked back a loan bid from Liverpool. According to Sky Sports:

"Manchester City have turned down a bid from Liverpool to take [£10m-rated] Micah Richards on loan to Anfield".

If LFC are after an experienced right back, it could mean that Glen Johnson is out for the rest of the season.

  1. If the reports are true that he is asking 100,000 /week in wages, then it is complicated. We might end up with a panic buy sitting on high wages and we're not even guaranteed an actual game changer.

"and the timeline makes it difficult" well how about making the deal early and stop pussy footing around FFS no wonder everyone else is adding to their squads and we cant do shit.

  3. Please not another Carrol type of deal...

If he is really asking 100,000 a week in wages, we shouldn't do it.
I think he is very talented but 100K a week is just too much for a player who has proven nothing.

  5. Why is starting negotiations for another player after the first attempted signing breaks down a "panic buy"? They just moved on to the next target.

    ReplyDelete
  6. The personal terms are reported to be already agreed. Its something with the club that's holding up the deal, possibly over how much upfront rather than in installments. Extra payments on certain milestones have also been mentioned.

Reliable people have told me it will still happen before the window shuts.

  7. Can't see this happening to be honest, Ian Ayre is dealing with it so it has to be complicated, a very good commercial man but not the best doing transfer deals..................he will get slaughtered if this doesn't happen, after Salah.

  8. as soon as ian ayre is involved every deal goes tits up j w henry get rid of him now or we will end up with spanish& swansea rejects again

  9. Little off topic, but I see Joao Carlos Teixeira in training pics with first team :)

    ReplyDelete
  10. Come on just get the deal done...

    ReplyDelete
  11. Why get rid?, he brings in huge revenue but we do need a CEO to do the transfer deals!!!

    ReplyDelete
  12. Wouldn't Ayre be involved in every signing we make? Seems like he's successfully managed quite a few in his time at the club.

  13. I don't understand why people are being so negative about this guy. Did you not see him dominate the left side of the pitch when England played the Ukraine? Good with both feet, strong, fast, great crosses and good passes. He made half the England team look like they were standing still.
Also, I don't think it is a panic buy. I think that Liverpool have to keep their transfers as quiet as possible due to Morinho buying up any players we look at as he's scared of us strengthening further. IMO Liverpool have waited until the last minute as it means that if we can't sign him then nobody else can... but that's just my opinion.

  14. Aha! So that explains the jittery feeling I had this morning when they'd run out of croissants and I had to have a bagel for breakfast instead?!

  15. Richards could be a good loan option! Strong player. But injuries are a concern.
I just heard a rumour about Aspas to Athletico Madrid for Diego Costa.

    ReplyDelete
  16. He's missed quite a few too, his expertise is finance and commercial deals not recruiting players!!!

    ReplyDelete
  17. How many? There have a been a few high profile ones that have gotten lots of press. I'd be interested to see a list.

  18. A straight swap?

    ReplyDelete
  19. Leaving it till 3-4 days before the transfer window ends (after spending 2.5 months chasing a player) is negligence (IMO). Why didn't LFC start making contact with Konoplyanka earlier? Why not approach him 10 days ago (or longer) when it was becoming increasingly clear (after almost 2.5 months), that a deal for Salah might not happen?

LFC clearly didn't plan to sign Konoplyanka in this window, so if they're scrambling to sign him now, it is clearly a panic buy.

  20. Ayre deserves an oscar!

    ReplyDelete
  21. It would help if Kenny Dalglish and Ian Rush helped out in these deals, they have a certain kudos with footballers and clubs.

    ReplyDelete
  22. The statement 'LFC clearly didn't plan to sign Konoplyanka in this window' is simply your interpretation of the events and not based on fact.

    ReplyDelete
  23. I don't get this at all.
WHAT'S TAKING SO BLOODY LONG TO CONCLUDE THIS?!?!
WHAT IS SO BLOODY COMPLICATED ABOUT THIS DEAL ?!?!

    Ayre you doofus!
You should have hired an interpreter instead of using sign language!

    ReplyDelete
  24. Brendan Rodgers says it's not true that Liverpool have tried to sign Micah Richards on loan.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Jeez, thank you for clearing that up. Tell you what, I will put 'IMO' after every third word from now on, just to make it 150% clear that it's my opinion.

Obviously it's my interpretation; this is an opinion-based site.

  26. Have you done business with gritty Russians? If not, that's why it's taking so long.

    ReplyDelete
  27. It has been reported elsewhere that he was intended for the summer....still not sure of bringing those plans forward due to missing out on another target qualifies as panic buying though.

    ReplyDelete
  28. He didn't say that in his press conference. What's the source?

    ReplyDelete
  29. Surprising statement from someone who makes demands for sources when others make statements based on their opinions. One rule for one etc

    ReplyDelete
  30. Coutinho Llori and Moses were deadline day signings also.

    ReplyDelete
  31. I've read that the deal is done in terms of the fee and contract, now just going through the motions. Also heard he may have his medical in Ukraine so we not have have official photos until February. I'll post a link when I find the source.

    ReplyDelete
  32. ayre deserves a slap

    ReplyDelete
  33. And say what? That if the deal with Salah breaks down then he's our backup? Yeah, I'm sure his agent would have taken that seriously.

Clearly Konoplyanka is just the next name on the list. Liverpool wanted a wide attacking player and Salah and Konoplyanka both fit the description. For this to be a "panic buy" implies that it's a rash decision, not just one made in a hurry. It seems quite obvious that this is a long considered target and that Liverpool simply decided to try for him when the first deal broke down. There is nothing rash or ill-conceived about that, it just happens to be in the last few days of the window. You can make a good decision quickly and not be in a panic.

  34. This is what irritates me about certain visitors to this site. Like others, you come out with like this that is just not true. If someone makes an obvious statement of fact, i.e. X is signing for LFC, I'll ask for a source. If someone makes an obvious statement of opinion, I don't, so please don't twist things.

My comment is obviously a statement of opinion. You are just being a pedant.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Chelsea wont let him go, this late in the day.

  36. It's a transfer of a contract of a highly paid professional football player. It's not as easy as you might think.

  37. http://www.mirror.co.uk/sport/football/transfer-news/liverpool-transfer-news-live-yevhen-3095862#.Uuu5gdO3PFo

At the 1:59 update, according to the Mirror, personal terms have been agreed upon but a fee is still being hammered out. My apologies I said otherwise in my post before.

    ReplyDelete
  38. I disagree. Just because LFC allegedly scouted him in the past doesn't automatically mean he's next on the list. The clubs scouts hundreds of players. In my view, it's more likely that LFC put all their eggs in the Salah basket, and when it became clear they couldn't do the deal, they scrambled for another target, which is why it's all happening 'very quickly'.

Next you'll be telling us that Andy Carroll was just the 'next target on the list, and that's why LFC spent 35m on transfer deadline day. Ditto Sakho, who cost 19m. For me, history suggests this is a panic buy.

    ReplyDelete
  39. I can assure you that I was not being pedantic... If I misunderstood your comment then it is obviosly not obvious! Anyway, it's good of you to allow my comments on here as usually, although they are not insulting and just offer a different opinion to yours, they never appear. Strange that!

    ReplyDelete
  40. Peter O'Rourke on Skydeadlineday, says personal terms have been agreed for a 5.5 year deal, just a matter of time, thats a good source,,
Time will Tell, I hear Dempsey is available again, so no worries,

    ReplyDelete
  41. And here we go again. More inaccuracy. If any of your comments have been removed in the past it will have been because you were sniping/moaning about the site and/or me. No one's comments are deleted just because they disagree with me. The very idea is totally ridiculous. Look around 98% 1m+ comments on the site disagree with me - why do they stay live? People who discuss/debate in a civil manner have nothing to worry about.

    ReplyDelete
  42. It wasn't just that they'd scouted him, he was apparently lined up for this summer...which means all they have done is move up the schedule because Salah fell through.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Right, so all of a sudden, press reports are 100% reliable, and should be trusted without question :-) Funny how that happens when people are trying to prove their point. Fans spend all year moaning about dodgy transfer rumours etc, and castigating the press, but when it suits their argument, the tabloids are suddenly bastions of truth :-)

    ReplyDelete
  44. Rodgers said very clearly during this window that you don't just have one target, you have a list so that if you don't get your first man you have options. What you're suggesting is that they had no backup for Salah at all. So is Rodgers just making that up?

    ReplyDelete
  45. Well it's better than just a totally "unsupported" theory :-)

    ReplyDelete
  46. Nah. I bet Kono's dad is regaling them with stories of how deals in the past used to be done at the table with vodka and russian roulette.

Separated the Bold from the Chickenshit.

*Ayre at this point asks his aid why the elder Russian gentlemen keeps referring to Yarmolenko as 'Konoplyanka'.

    ReplyDelete
  47. That still isn't (IMO) persuasive evidence to suggest that Konoplyanka was next on the list.

I just do't believe that there was a plan in place stipulating that Salah = no 1 target, and if that fails, get Konoplyanka.

If there was such a plan in place, I believe LFC would've made contact with Dnipro weeks ago, not with only a couple of days to go till the deadline.

How disorganised are LFC? At some point during the last 2.5 months, didn't anyone in the hierarchy think to themselves 'well, it's been over two months and still no sign of a deal; perhaps we should look make tentative enquiries about someone else'?

I see your point, and accept it's a possibility. I just don't buy into it.

    ReplyDelete
  48. That just made me feel smutty and giggly...I think the transfer tension is getting to me.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Tony Barrat of the times says it, but not when or where,

  50. I really can't understand the strategy of this club!
All year Rogers is talking about proven and quality players that will make straight impact and improve the first team (not only the squad) and we look at a player that its very hard to see how he can improve the first team.
additionally, the club remember in the last minute of the transfer window which sends a bad signal of management.

Analyzing this transfer manifest a worrying picture :
Quality - It's looks like Moses kind of player.
Transfer target - improve the first team straight away and I can't see how this will be reach!
Experience - as we all know the Ukraine league isn't the best league in Europe.
Risk - big ???? Over adaptive time and capability of succeeding in the EPL. On top of that our experience with Ukraine players (and in England in General is pretty awful
Price - 16m£+ is a lot of money for an unproven 24-5 years old including very high risk and low return rate
Alternative - same price on Sahla, which is 3 years younger and better faster, goler, and dribbler makes much better sense (economically and quality)

bad indications as how the club is operating while more worrying is that there
is no learning curve and same mistakes are repeating every window.

i am very much hoping that i am wrong but its hard to see it after all that happen.

    ReplyDelete
  51. The difference is the purchase of Carroll was a clear panic buy due to Torres being sold on deadline day. Konoplyanka will have been well scouted and his ability is clear, he stood out in Euro 2012. I just think the club would have preferred the cheaper option with potential of Salah than the more expensive option of Konoplyanka, despite the fact that he is more the finished article.
It's not a panic buy. I would be delighted if he signs as I wanted us to sign him last summer, a great little player.

    ReplyDelete
  52. How do you know they didn't? If Liverpool were in contact with Basel since before the window then that's contact made even outside the transfer window, so it's conceivable they did the same with Dnipro and the clubs that had contracts on any other players they were interested in. Why not? The problem for me is that you can't actually make an offer until you're sure one way or the other. How could Liverpool, in the middle of long and difficult negotiations with Basel, have simply started negotiations with Dnipro? No one would have taken them seriously. They could have made an enquiry but again, how do you know they didn't? The very fact that a deal with Dnipro looks like it might be wrapped up in a couple of days means that it's very unlikely this was the first contact they made.

To me it sounds much more likely that initial contact was made some time ago, enquiring about the player availability and possible interest in playing for Liverpool. Dnipro would have told them the situation and said "come back with a serious offer if you want to do business". Of course the club isn't going to make a serious offer when they are still chasing their primary target, they only want one player. But when that finally broke down, and that was really only because Chelsea stepped in, they were free to start serious negotiations for another player. Which they did. Pretty much immediately.

It seems to me like you are letting your established view that Liverpool are bad at transfers influence your interpretation of events. It becomes a bit of a circular argument. If you think they are bad at transfers then you interpret everything that way, further re-enforcing your own view, when in this case there really is no strong evidence to support that. Rodgers explicitly says that they had a list of players lined up, that's pretty conclusive in my view.

  53. Im so mad chelsea dont make a bid, just to show ayre how its done, they would of done it in an hour. Whats so complicated, who they trying to fool, you just have to agree the fee and personal terms, then its the medical which isnt a deal. So TWO THINGS only but no, ayre cant do it, HATE HIM LIKE DEATH!

  62. Could just be a tactic to squeeze out a better deal. They know we and others are after him. If they don't sell him now they know they can still probably sell him in the summer so they can afford to play hardball. Plus they will know LFC is under pressure to make a signing to appease the fans.

  70. It's clear that this lad is a second choice but there is a significant diffrence between second choice and "panic buy". Perhaps second choice as Salah was seen as a much cheaper option. Something that never turned out. Anyway Richards would be a good signing and shows that the club are looking to fill the gap. Hope there is another option.

  76. Apparently the owner of Dnipro is asking far to much and news has it that terms with the player have been agreed which has even seen Kono taken a pay cut!

So it is either a case of overpay or no thanks. Will be gutted if the deal does not go through.

    ReplyDelete
  77. Doesn't matter whether he is a panic buy or 2nd choice. At the end of the day, the result is the same - either a rival comes in to snatch him from under LFC nose with a higher bid or no deal because LFC is not willing to pay the asking price. End result = no new signing. Come summer, the same cycle repeats itself and we will possibly end up with more squad players.

Something is seriously wrong with Ayre and his team in negotiating deals.
