After a recent knee injury, Liverpool midfielder Lucas Leiva faces another lengthy spell on the sidelines, which makes the Reds' need for another dedicated defensive midifielder particularly acute. Former Manchester City star Nigel De Jong is currently linked with a move to Anfield, and Lucas believes the Dutchman would be a great siging for Liverpool.
When asked yesterday about 29-year-old De Jong, who currently plays for Serie A giants AC Milan, Lucas told ESPN:
"He [De Jong] is a good player and produced many good performances at Manchester City.
"If he comes it will be good for the squad because it's important to have a strong squad"
Liverpool are reportedly considering a loan move for De Jong - who cost Milan €5m in 2012 - and a player of his experience would definitely enhance the strength of Brendan Rodgers' squad.
I don't understand why the De Jong would leave, though. He is a regular starter for Milan, and is on 28 appearances for the season so far, including six starts in the Champions League. The Dutchman plays practically every game for the Italian giants, but that might not be the case at Anfield. Why would he give up regular playing time to become a cover player?
Taking everything into consideration, I'd rather LFC sealed this deal (or another defensive midfielder) over Konoplyanka. Scoring goals is not an issue for the Reds right now, but defensive frailty is something that needs to be addressed, and a combative midfield enforcer would go a long way towards improving the Reds defensive stability.
Don't get me wrong - the more attacking goal threats, the better, but it's plain to see that Liverpool are crying out for a quality defensive midfielder, and with Lucas injured, Joe Allen suffering regular niggles, and Steven Gerrard patently unsuitable for that role, it's arguably a bigger transfer priority.

Hahahahah yes go and urge ayre, he would definitely sign de jong in 2017, if he starts now...
ReplyDeleteWe are not going to sign anyone. I doubt if there had been any real effort to bring Kono.
ReplyDeleteBarcelona's defenders are no where near the best in the world imo,but they have a very potent attack force that keeps the other teams soooo busy ....haven't u all noticed that the days that our attack force are soo potent ..our defense look good all of a sudden. NB.pique was a flop in England remember ?
ReplyDeleteIts almost Saturday in Mumbai. How much more time do we have? 5 hours?
ReplyDeletetry and follow @FNN_ukraine..i leanrt ayre wants to pay 12mill and 3 mill if he plays 50 games and we make champions league.
ReplyDeleteSeriously feel like sticking a glazed doughnut in Ian Ayres rectum....
ReplyDelete4 hours and half to go, cant wait to see the end of this misery, dont care if we get anyone now, just want to see this finished asap, its been a catastrophe to witness. If someone asks me which was the most shted year/month in your life? Def. Will say jan 2014!
ReplyDeleteAgreed, come 11 o'clock tonight we'll have no one. Somebody needs to be held accountable for this shambles. When it comes to transfer deals we are a joke.
ReplyDeleteSeems like the biggest transfer expense this season was Ayre's business class flight tickets to Spain, Ukraine, et al. (multiple times)
ReplyDeleteand at 11.01pm we hear Ian Arye saying... the contract with Dunkin Donuts was our marquee signing..
ReplyDeleteIf any of that is true, then I'd be concerned not only about this transfer, but about any hope Liverpool has of being successful. The same old nonsense! I'm sure we're gonna hear this 'we won't pay over the odds' statement many times over. Who exactly are willing to pay for? Why do we repeatedly insist on dictating the price of other teams' players? We got lucky with Coutinho, not sure it will ever happen again.
ReplyDeleteAre you suggesting that our defender are good in attack? G. Johnson used to be good, but he's played really poorly lately. Who else is a good good attacking defender?
ReplyDeleteThey just signed essien from Chelsea, maybe that's why he's linked
ReplyDeleteHard to say if this is just Ayre incompetence or if the owners are holding him back with the budget.
ReplyDeleteStop witnessing it, then. Just ignore it. Make your life easier.
ReplyDeleteNo way, the Dempsey affair was far worse, an absolute negligent shame.
ReplyDeleteSiggurdson, Dempsey, Mhiktaryan, Costa, Willian, Salah, Kono, the greek, Montoya, just a few off the top of my head,
Why not stick it in his mouth, and let him naturally transfer it to his rectum, we know it will take about 6 months.
ReplyDeleteI cannot believe Ayre, Henry, Rodgers or whoever is responsible for these shambles is risking us falling out of top 4 by not identifying the real need for this team, defensive midfield. I keep reading articles linking us with attacking midfielders, why? Lucas and Allen are our only DF and they're both injured. Besides, this is the position that need to upgrade to become a force in the PL.
ReplyDeleteEach to their own.
ReplyDeleteI just don't understand how it takes up months of negotiations to try to agree a deal for Salah and it only took Chelsea 24 hrs to get it done under our nose. How does anybody else get their deals done and we keep dragging them for weeks to them see them collapse?
ReplyDeleteI do agree we could do with DM options now and into the future. But I think SG has earnt the right to be given a bit more time to show what he can do before being written off entirely. If as they say you are as good as your last game he ain't doing too bad.
ReplyDeleteDon't you worry, we have a Spurs winger lined up to replace the Konoplyanka fail deal. :)
ReplyDeleteIs that Chadli thing legit?? or is it just hear say... to make Dnipro think lets not pull on Ian Ayre's nipples to hard or he'll walk, as he has other targets lined up.
ReplyDeleteYeah and the seasons just finished. Congrats for making the top 4!
ReplyDeleteChrist I oinly went for a nap......
ReplyDeleteI wonder what they're talking about for all those months.
ReplyDeleteFootball agents are total parasites, I think it was decided a while back not to bend over for every demand they make & i support that decision, if we get kono then fine but if not let's go easy on the knee jerking
ReplyDeleteMonopoly ankh only wants 60k a week.
ReplyDelete....but does he land on his feet?!!!
ReplyDeleteP.S. Nice work my son!
damn..
ReplyDeleteNo not legit, both parties have denied it.
ReplyDeleteDepends if we get the lad signed.
ReplyDeleteWe'll see...
I have a gift for basic spelling and grammatical errors it seems but alas, when seized by the spirit of Thespis, we are slaves to our muse!
ReplyDeleteWe will....I have an alternate version of Ayre on his motorcycle a la the Terminator....post reprogramme....and with Chumbawumba playing in the background.
ReplyDeleteJaimie, you're arguing for argument sake just to mount a case that our transfer dealings are inept.
ReplyDeleteI don't think anyone could have put it more elegantly than Adam but you still wish to counter his line of reaasoning to suit your agenda.
Occam's razor is against you on this one my friend. The more gracious thing to do in this instance would be to acknowledge that the explanation with the fewest assumptions is mostly likely correct. You seem to be saying that there was no plan b after Salah and yet we were almost immediately in discussions for this new target once the Salah deal slipped away - having also been linked with him before.
The path with the least assumptions here is simply he is the next most suitable/desirable target.
It is actually impressive how you can stand by a less plausible logic but after a while it does become a little insulting to peoples' intelligence.
You will almost certainly challenge me as well because it nobody can adequately can stretch beyond theory. The trouble for me though is your argument plainly has hidden agenda, whereas Adam is simply stating the most likely.
Goodnight
I hope he reloads his shotgun in that cool Terminator way.
ReplyDeleteif Ian Ayre is the Terminator, Daniel Levy is the T1000.
You're right. I'm so sorry for having the temerity to have my own view on things. From now on, I'll just be fickle and go with the group view on things, and immediately relinquish my opinion just because someone else disagrees.
ReplyDeleteWhat's insulting to the intelligence is people like you constantly trying to pressure others into changing their opinion. This is my view. Like it or lump it, and I'm not going to change it just because you think I should. Capisce?
Unbelievable looks like Kono may be a no go and no def mid or central mid or full back well if theres no C.L then we can only point the finger at lack of ambition.
ReplyDeleteThe dithering of this club has been nothing short of ludicrous i hope Henry gets a director of football i dont care what B.R wants.
Levy/T1000...there's a definite similarity in the ear dept!
ReplyDeleteYou have a whole department for your ears?
ReplyDeleteOh well, isn't that great!? The rest just sit here, like fools, with our ears on the sides of our stupid heads.
*sigh*
I shouldn't be jealous.
Congratulations on all of your success, particularly with your ear dept.
Blame Henry Ford not me.
ReplyDeleteLoud and clear; I didn't expect any less.
ReplyDeleteLet's be fair though you're hardly some shrinking violet ;)
I'm sure he'd probably just blame the Jews.
ReplyDeleteTut, tut Henry.
................
ReplyDeleteHey, it isn't my fault Henry Ford was a raging anti-Semite!
ReplyDeleteI'm innocent, folks!
crap, crap, crap, crap............utter shite. we will never get anywhere while we have inept people in charge of closing deals. sick to death of it all.
ReplyDeleteIan Ayre get out you are an embarrasment
ReplyDeleteI appreciate the escalation of this.
ReplyDeleteYou expect a fifth crap and then BOOM, in comes a shite.
:-)
ReplyDeleteHey, at least your screenplay was appreciated.... unlike my sonnet in the "Calm Down: Hamman on £16 million transfer fail" thread ...pearls before and all that! ;-)
Sir, I say submit this script to some producers. Being Liverpool season 2...
