Transfer shock? Barcelona agree £10m 2-year deal for 'outstanding' LFC star

After months of transfer speculation, it seems that the Pepe Reina-Barcelona rumours actually have legs, and reports in Spain today claim that the Spaniard is on his way to the Nou Camp this summer.

Barcelona-based newspaper Mundo Deportivo - which maintains close links with the Catalan club - claims:

* Reina has agreed a 2-year deal with Barca.

* A transfer fee of £10m has been agreed with LFC.

* Barca guarantee Reina will be first choice when Victor Valdes leaves.

The story is front page news in Spain:

Pepe Reina Barcelona

This should come as no surprise given the constant speculation over the last year, with the most recent link coming last week, when Mundo Deportivo, reported:

"Barça greatly values Reina - he knows the club and would easily fit into the dressing room. One of his strengths is his ability with the ball, which is a key factor for the club. His charisma, character and extensive experience are also highly valued by the Barca hierarchy, who believe Reina is definitely a safe bet"

In January, Reina's father Miguel publicly urged his son to join Barcelona. He told Reporters:

"Pepe has shown to everyone how good a goalkeeper he is. Right now, he's at the height of his career. And he'd be the ideal goalkeeper for Barcelona."

Addressing the speculation in early February, Reina - recently described by Brendan Rodgers as 'outstanding - dismissed his father's comments, but remained full of praise for the Spanish giants. He told ESPN:

"Barcelona is the best club in the world. I know what it means because I trained there as a player and as a person. When I sign a contract, I fulfil it and I have signed with Liverpool until 2016"

In a recent interview , Juan Carlos Unzue - who spent eight years at Barca's goalkeeping coach before leaving in 2012 - confirmed that Barcelona have watched Reina. He said:

"It is difficult to follow Valdes, but also a nice challenge. Vicente Guaita, Maarten Stekelenburg, Jose Reina are all all interesting names we have watched."

I'm not too fussed if Reina leaves. His heart hasn't been in it for a couple of years now, and it's no surprise his form improved after the Barca rumours intensified in January. The same thing happened with Andy Carroll last season: as soon as he had something to play for (i.e. a place in the England squad for Euro 2012), he started trying harder and playing better.

LFC fans will probably be upset about the comparatively lowe £10m fee, but that should be (almost) enough to snap up a quality replacement.

In recent months, the likes of Asmir Begovic, Jason Steele, Ali Al Habsi, Mark Andre ter Stegen, and Alex McCarthy have all been touted as replacements for Reina.

Who should replace him...?

  2. if this is true 10mil is shocking and just goes to show we are still rubbish as doing transfer deals. Reina is clearly a top top keeper dispite making a few errors this season. Barca would not want to sign him if he was rubbish.

we should have got 15mil for him really. 10mil is just too low.

...10 million? What on earth. I'll believe it when I see it. Why would we be selling him at all? I mean he had some shockers at the start but in 2013 I think hes retained some good form. Not to mention Barcelona have loads of money - if our transfer rumours with them are true - I would hold them to ransom and ask for more - or maybe a couple of the players they declined us in the past. dammit Liverpool - get some balls lol

  6. I dont see how anyone could think qualifying for the champions league would be possible if we dont have any players who havnt done it before

  7. lol absolute BS only the other day he was saying how much he loved it at liverpool and could see himself finishing his career at the club. another BS story Jaimie sorry but dont you ever get bored of writing these nonsense stories i suppose you need the site traffic tho. ;) another site to add to the untrustworthy source.

  8. Shocking news ....shocking news...can't really believe we can be bullied into such a deal....can't wait to see what Jason has to say about this i'm sure he'll have something funny to say..

  9. 10 million lol at least fsg can clear some more wages of the books seriously worried about the way the club is going

    ReplyDelete
  10. *If* this is true - and there have been rumours since January - then I don't understand thy we didn't go for Jack Butland in January for the (relatively paltry) £3.3m. Top, young keeper that ticks all FSGs boxes.

  11. Reina assured us this week - NOT GOING ANYWHERE SO END OF

How do you even know this is even true? Also FSG have got rid of dead wood and old players who were on big wages, there trying to make us financially safe.

  15. I do get what you mean, although I think Butland is slightly overrated. He was though cheap and could be good in a few years time

    ReplyDelete
  16. well lets put it in the bank then....i usually work on the premise of listening to what rogers says ...as the opposite usually happens ..if he says hes going hell more than likely pen an extension

    ReplyDelete
  17. yes pepe dead wood lol there getting rid of all the players on big wages its called cutbacks

    ReplyDelete
  18. if they are offering gerrard an extension an extension they will have to balance the books

    ReplyDelete
  19. gerrards untouchable it would make no sense for fsg to get rid of him saying that imo they would sell there own mothers for the right price,

    ReplyDelete
  20. liverpool4life5653:09 pm, May 04, 2013

    ReplyDelete
  25. liverpool4life5653:16 pm, May 04, 2013

    ReplyDelete
  33. your right and imo there not the right owners for lfc even you have just stated there business men here for the money and like all business men they start off with a little profit then they get greedy and want the lot

I would hate to give you money you probs spend it all. They put in 300 million for Liverpool another 300 million wiped some debt, you need to take some money back alittle at a time, they are the right owners because they care about our finances.

    ReplyDelete
  37. i just hate it when you post me

    ReplyDelete
  38. liverpool4life5653:35 pm, May 04, 2013

  40. liverpool4life5653:37 pm, May 04, 2013

Because you always get proved wrong, if they made a loss on there business they would be bankrupt. Do you ever go out? Because your comment you don't seem street wise.

    ReplyDelete
  41. iam off out now to get pissed as i need a drink because you have drained me again infact i think am turning into an alcoholic as you drain me daily

    ReplyDelete

Because your brain can't take it, :) that's why when your losing a argument you come out with "drainer" :) everyone who posts on here knows you don't know anything about owning a business, if you did open one up it be bankrupt in a day haha.

    ReplyDelete
  43. are you trying to say there is no loyalty anymore surely you jest there not all money mad just 99.99%

  44. liverpool4life5653:42 pm, May 04, 2013

Unintelligent comment, by far, drained you? Because you don't know anything. You make things up to suit your argument it's quiet sad lol :)

  45. i know... what was i thinking

    ReplyDelete
  46. Mike Aitcheson3:46 pm, May 04, 2013

After a brief period of near sanity, back to the same old comments, FSG are rubbish blah blah, we're doomed blah blah, so sad to see certain posters reverting to type.
Don't know about you guys, but I reckon reading about people's views on the actual post subject would be a refreshing change rather than endless arguments about the same old opinions FSG good/bad Rodgers good/bad as answers to subjects
    It's getting boring.
Anyway, Pepe has improved quite a lot from his early to mid season form, £10m isn't enough for him. I would sell him , but only for a Per Stegen type, maybe Begovic , but NOT El Habsi/Steele /McCarthy even after his performance a couple of weeks ago.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Umm... Charlie Adam... Hello?!?!

    ReplyDelete
  48. liverpool4life5653:53 pm, May 04, 2013

    Haha;-)

    ReplyDelete
  49. mike do you think the club is showing ambition by letting the better players leave imo the better players should be staying and the underperformers sacrificed if pepe go,es and suarez we would have one big name left at the club who the best young players would want to play with gerrard and lets face it hes not going to be around for ever,i have no problem selling our star players but lets get there replacements into the club before we sell

    ReplyDelete
  50. Oh no Kanwar is at it again.

    ReplyDelete
  51. My god youre delusional

    ReplyDelete
  52. its a sad state off affairs when players like carragher and gerrard are most likely the last players we will see spent there entire careaer at the same club

    ReplyDelete
  53. i was self employed for years untill i had an accident so i do no a bit about running my own business and i never went bankrupt

    ReplyDelete
  54. liverpool4life5654:17 pm, May 04, 2013

By your comments you don't, you expect our owners to run Liverpool on a loss. Which shows you don't know much.

    ReplyDelete
  55. i disagree about hendo if he carrys on improving next season i think he can really push on also about selling the top stars its a very dangerous game one in which we could end up with severly burnt fingers if thats the way fsg want to play it

    ReplyDelete
  56. try 10m plus a couple of good young players.

    ReplyDelete
  57. Until it is on the official website, as with every other rumour, it'll be put down as exactly that: a rumour!

Now, if we do have to find a replacement, then Andre ter-Stegen HAS to be brought to the club. If we only sign one player this summer, then ATS has to be the one we buy!

    ReplyDelete
  58. i expect owners of clubs to be fans 1st business men second or at least have a love of the game, you spend your own money on things you love ,if you don,t love it its all about making money

    ReplyDelete
  59. liverpool4life5654:39 pm, May 04, 2013

We owe them alot, we was on the verge of going bust, they saved us from that. Pump in money, YET they still spent 47 million last summer and another 20 in January, if they didn't give us money then yes you have a point but they do, and werner is nearly at every game from america,

    ReplyDelete
  60. like i said i dont think hendo has been bad and he is def improving, but would he get into utd, arsenal city or chelseas team? I just dont think so. Its not to say he wont ever, but i dont think right now he would, although out of the list above he is the best.

    ReplyDelete
  61. While I think FSG arent as bad as you, I do think that its clear they aint here due to being football fans. Thats not strictly a bad thing, as it can mean they dont try to get involved as much. However on the pitch we have suffered. If the team does well I dont think it matters if the owners are businessmen or not but if the team isnt, that it can cause problems.

Personally I would like to see a change in direction and for FSG to actually go for it. This doesn`t require large pots of money, but a change of tactic. Currently I feel they are gambling with us. Trying to streamline the club and hope it works out so we win but on the cheap. Thus providing a good investment for them when they sell up. I completely get the need for being prudent, esp after we nearly went under, however I would like to see them make a statement and go all out to get someone like Jürgen Klopp. He is still young so fits there bill, yet at the same time is a awesome manager. Germany right now is where the best players are coming from. This will give us the head start in being able to get some of them players in. Our league position means players arent likely to want to come to us, and having a unknown manager means they aint coming for him.

I`m sure with someone like Klopp in charge we would mount a good challenge, not just for top 4 but also the league. Currently I cant see us getting anywhere near the title for a really long time.

    ReplyDelete
  62. let him go, liverpool can replace him. No one player bigger than the club. I think liverpool should take a lesson from Bayern Munich and print the clubs name at the top of the back of their jerseys and the players name at the bottom. A symbolic way of showing the importance of the club over any player.

    ReplyDelete
  63. His comments aren't very street smart? Who? Jason Carr? You are so kind and generous with your compliments of JC, liverpool4life565. Anyone who spends some time on this site knows that JC is an absolute retard.

    ReplyDelete
  64. Didn't know that JC has a brain to begin with. His spelling says it all. LOL.

    ReplyDelete
  65. How do you make profit by demolishing a club? Don't you it's in their best interest to make the club better so they can make more profits??? If Pepe wanna stay he can do something about, I mean Agger last year was supposed to be in Nou Camp but signed a new contract. Players also have a choice when they are under contract.

    ReplyDelete
  66. I don't mind him leaving but 10m If true is another case of us getting caught in the shower picking up the soap in the slammer.Buy high, sell low this better be paper talk or at the very least we should try and get a few talented kids to beef up the deal.I would've went for TIAGO ALCANTARA In a straight swap deal.MARC TER STEGEN or ASMIR BEGOVIC to fill his boots would be good business.

    ReplyDelete
  67. It's funny when you almighty JC who knows more about running LFC believes everything he reads!!

    ReplyDelete
  68. i personally would add sturridge to your list and imo hendo is by miles the better prospect

    ReplyDelete
  69. rob so i take it your over the moon with a complete waste of a season another rodgers is god arse kisser

    ReplyDelete
  70. you owe them a lot i owe them nothing and as to say there are at nearly every game is a joke they have not turned up since they sacked kenny(the organ grinder)

    ReplyDelete
  71. it dose not matter what manager gets brought in if fsg do not back him hes redundant from day one

    ReplyDelete
  72. arsehole do you ever go on about anything but spelling you muppet

  138. There will come a day when people realise not everything printed in so called News Papers is true .... as Liverpool fans we should know this more than most. Re Pepe .... watch this space : )

    ReplyDelete
  139. liverpool4life565 - Stop antagonising other posters, or you'll get a one week ban. The same goes for Guest, JC and anyone else. I've deleted loads of comments on this thread that were nothing more than personal attacks. Seriously, I will start banning people if it continues.

    ReplyDelete
  140. This is just another paper story. There's just no evidence that FSG are looking to sell our best players - why do you and others just assume these stories are true?

    ReplyDelete
  141. why would an "outstanding" keeper "at the height of his career" sign a two year contract? it doesnt make sense to me.

    ReplyDelete
  142. Disagree about JH. I think Hendo could definetly challenge for a starting spot at the top teams if he keeps going as he has this season.
I agree with most of your other points, but I also think no player is irreplacable.
I also believe Allen will grow next season, and give Sterling a break. He's 18 and has shown great promise at the start of the season. Who knows? Maybe Borini will start playing well now that he's after all of the ops he had.

    ReplyDelete
  143. Well if Rodgers is smart he could use a deal with Reina to snip in and get some talent from them.
Alcantara is the player i would target is probably a cheaper and better option to buying Erikson who is overrrated.
I dont think on this seasons form Reina is going to be a massive loss and there is some good young keepers out there who i would be happy with.

    ReplyDelete
  144. People are overreacting. Pepe is a top keeper, but he wasn't untouchable and irreplaceable. He had a big personality at the club, but people here need to wake up to the fact that maybe Reina is doing this so he has a shot at being Spain's number 1. For me there are plenty of keepers that can replace Reina, 10 million can be used elsewhere.

  145. Mr. Point Of View8:22 am, May 05, 2013

well, just had to b wait n see. i rather losing suarez over than him. 10m bit low and with tat kind money not much choice of replacement.

with recent new kits advert, i dun think he will leave BUT in football nothing is 100% for sure.

    ReplyDelete
  146. Its a bit of a shock if this is actually true but I am not that bothered about it providing we get a decent replacement I suppose. I am a bit upset over the 10m though surely Reina is worth more than that?

    ReplyDelete
  147. just hope what your saying is true mate, just the papers ruffling the fans eh

    ReplyDelete
  148. If he wants to go ok go but 10 mil . Is it Ian ayre or FSG that is very very bad business 17-20 mil for sure . why is it when players are wanted out of barca we all have to pay stupid prices . But they buy players really low

    ReplyDelete
  149. Letting the better players leave? Name them. From what I've seen Torres is the only one they've sold, and for £50 Million we didn't do too badly.

    ReplyDelete
  150. Not fussed really 6 years ago when there was speculation could have come to us id have snapped him up, 10 million for Pepe ain't going to happen, didn't arsenal offer us 20 million last season.?

    ReplyDelete
  151. So? Stupid statement, A player that hasent played in the CL cant challenge for the CL? Why, good footballers are good footballers, I for one am happy that we are building a team that wants to EARN a place in the CL not just go to a club that has it already. how can't people see this as improvement? We have more togetherness in out team than you see ever at the mercenary sides

    ReplyDelete
  152. Euros, not pounds. I suspect it's more a case of that's what Barca would like to pay, not what's been agreed. This reeks of the Spanish press being used to unsettle the player. Barca are unapologetic when it comes to tapping up players in the media, it's actually quite unsettling the way they think they can just get whatever player they want.

Just as it is with Suarez, I don't see the point in selling a keeper who is otherwise happy to stay here, is proven quality and is actively sought after by some of the best teams in the world. Any transfer is a risk, you just never know what you're ultimately going to get and how well he'll fit into the team. Why take the risk? It Reina wants to go then of course it's fine, we get the best fee we possibly can and look for a replacement. But why do we have to constantly put our guesses and assumptions in the minds of footballers? The notion that his "heart is not in it" has me shaking my head. There is just no evidence for that. He's had patches of form that haven't been unquestionably world class but it's an artificially high standard to hold someone to. He's actually still been an exceptional keeper, clearly one of the better ones in the league, even at his worst.

  153. Clever clogs, talking down ? because l refuse to believe a lot of the things printed in papers,i'm talking down to no one.As Kenny Dalglish said last year,if Liverpool signed everyone they were linked with in a newspaper they would have signed about 300 players last summer! Of course if people want to play fantasy football they're quite entitled to.

    ReplyDelete
  154. Doubt he would that much but that's the only thing i can think that would put such a low value on this

    ReplyDelete
  155. Forgive me, I'm just a stupid man who believes we will sign every player we get linked with!

    ReplyDelete
  156. but there is zero evidence to suggest they wont back him. So far they have backed very heavyly both managers. KK got give over 100mil. Thats City backing, and Rodgers has been given over 40mil in one season.

    ReplyDelete
  157. Just to correct your error Jason, Werner has been several times this season, but Henry hasn`t.

    ReplyDelete
  158. i know but henry is the owner

    ReplyDelete
  159. tbh i dont mind if they never turn up as long as they do things right. If we start winning and signing top players then they can never turn up again and im happy. The issue as I stated before on a different article is that when your not doing well (namely now) then people look to other things and not turning up is one.

    ReplyDelete
  160. but thats the thing he has not turned up since he sacked kenny maybe hes lost interest

    ReplyDelete
  161. Competing for top 4 requires consistent quality for 10 months. Young, inexperienced players do not give you that. All players have drops in form, and young players tend to have them more frequently and for longer duration. A team full of youngsters with few experienced players will drop a lot of points. 3 nil-nil draws in five games clearly shows that we are lacking the quality to turn a game around. Our good results all come from an early goal. Its the experienced heads that remain calm and promote "togetherness" when we need it most.

    ReplyDelete
  162. Goal keeper areas must keep maintain and stablize...not so easy to get best replacement and good goal keeper.Pepe Reina take more than 2 season to get strong like now. Please thinking carefully about this idea.

    ReplyDelete
  163. I seam to remember a London based team making a big pundit look like a tool after the infamous You wont win anything with kids rant. They are in experienced but this is solving that and they are learning together to play in the first team together, a couple of draws changed this season and a few bad ref decisions and we are in the top 4, they aren't as inexperienced now it will come good buddy. next season deffo top 4, everything's there to show it now its shaping and coming together, only thing i think we need to do is draw teams back from their goal as most teams tend to park the bus on us.

    ReplyDelete
  164. Another quick thought on this, pepe only came out a few days before explaining his family are really settled in Liverpool and dont want to leave

    ReplyDelete
  165. It was about united actually, and they had a reasonable number of older players. But theyd all played together through the youth teams so you may be right about the togetherness. You may be right about next year: sterling and suso will be better, hopefully match winners. Wisdom ans kelly too. Allen and borini will hopefully do better and coutinho/sturridge fantastic. We need a top centre back, diame and an experienced top class striker and we can win a lot more games. Its a shame about carra, i think we will need his experience next season
