'He deserves to play' - LFC to rescue £6m mercenary from career-suicide. Mistake...?

Liverpool are reportedly lining up a move for Manchester City benchwarmer Scott Sinclair.

According to reports today, Liverpool are back in for Sinclair, who worked with Brendan Rodgers at Swansea City.

The Reds were linked with the winger during the January 2012 transfer window, and again last summer, but the 24-year old chose career suicide instead and went to Man City.

Sinclair - who cost £6.2m - has made just THREE starts all season for City, and in his press conference yesterday, Roberto Mancini conceded that he 'deserves to play', but hinted that a summer move would be a a good idea. He told reporters:

"He is very unlucky. It is my fault, not his fault. A young player like Scott who is a good player deserves to play always. For him, it was a really difficult year this year.

"Scott is young and he has good quality but this year was difficult for him. I think it is better if he can have another solution"

Sinclair would've know beforehand the extreme difficulty of breaking into the team, so why on earth did he choose City? In my view, there can be only one reason: greed. Why else would a player basically choose to sit on the bench for a year after being a regular starter at his previous club? Sinclair may not have played much this season, but he's a hell of a lot richer, that's for sure.

Perhaps I'm being a little harsh, but he seems like a typical mercenary. His career has basically stalled at the age of 24, and I find it hard to believe he went to Eastlands thinking he'd dislodge the likes of David Silva et al from the first team.

Despite all that, Sinclair is clearly a skilful player. He's worked with Rodgers before, he'd fit into LFC's system, and he could ultimately prove to be a viable alternative to Tom Ince.

Worth a bid...?

So he was a mercenary for going to Manchester City but I take it he wouldn't be going to Liverpool. I must assume then that he will be taking a pay cut just so he can join the racists.

  3. surely at his age he could afford to take a year off to learn from the world class players around him knowing quite well he would only get a limited number of games, then move on the following season without too much damage to his reputation or standing,

oh and another signing on fee

  4. I guess that's a possibility, but seriously, do you really believe that? Sinclair could've played alongside Gerrard and Suarez at LFC, and he would've played. Instead, he took the cash to sit on the bench.

I would much rather go for Tom ince. Ince is younger and much better than Sinclair. Sinclair's wages will also be snubbed by many clubs. Not worth it.

  6. Your second last sentence, Jaimie, was what I was thinking: him or Ince?

I think he fits the FSG 'blueprint' of young, relatively cheap and with a lot of potential as well as a current ability. I'd take him for £6m, or less, and go for Ince as well to give us more depth up front and that'll be our forward positions sorted. Then we can concentrate on new defenders.

  7. If we're after Ince, I say we leave Sinclair well alone!

  11. Liverpool currently have a couple of good young players from the academy that i would prefer to see given the chance than waste money on Sinclair.
The club need to look at two types those with massive potential and those who are proven top liners Sinclair is neither.

  15. I think that labelling him a mercenary is a bit harsh. He's still young, had a good season and then a top side came calling. It'd be hard to turn that down. He'd be learning alongside some great strikers, plus I'm sure he had the belief that he'd be good enough to earn game time.

Look at Sturridge. Went to City and then Chelsea. Didn't really get the pitch time that he wanted but he's certainly looking the goods for us now.

  17. a move for this player would be suicidal for liverpool. LFC needs to buy quality over quantity. With some sales and transfer kitty, liverpool needs to buy only 2-3 quality players. Instead of spending 45m on 5 mediocre players, get alonso - 10m, eriksen-15m, ince - 5m and Sakho - 15m.

  18. second season is always the test and one reason why you shouldn`t buy players based on one season alone.

  19. SCOTT SINCLAIR is no better than what we already have.Wasting money from our seemingly limited transfer budget for a player who failed at a club we are trying to compete with, sounds stupid to me.Better options are available. We should be looking at players like MERTENS or HONDA not another British flop!

  21. I give a lot of credence to what you are saying here. I have a young lad who has worked for both of my local competitors and never flourished. I took a look at him and thought that he probably needs the "love" of someone who believes in him and will give him room to grow. A year on and I can stand back and look at this young man and comment on the fact that he's still a useless donkey and should think about a new career path. Moral of the story, some people are great, some people have greatness within them, then there are others who have the unfounded belief that they are great. Which one is Sinclair and are LFC in a position to take too many gambles?

  22. I don't believe he is the one to make a difference to our team.
We need some world beaters, or at least potential ones.
I still think Allen will come good, and I always rooted for signing DS, but I just don't see SS as a good option.

  25. Sorry but your fantasy league strategy doesn't make sense for a couple of reasons. First you say buy only 2-3 decent players and then name 4! Also who are these people we are going to sell? Surely not Hendo now he is showing some genuine form? I think Skrtel has got to go, been poor this season and his attitude stinks from what we've read. So, with our defense having been a weak link so often this season, we would be losing Jamie Carragher to retirement, Skrtel and probably Coates to sales. That's three defenders gone and you'd bring in one defender from PSG who is highly unlikely to come to a side not in Europe anyway! How does 3 out and one in strengthen our defense?

  27. SS was young when Man City came calling with talks of millions to be earned world class players to play alongside, a huge stadium of adoring fans, blah blah. The kid had his head turned but that doesn't make him a mercenary. Why did City sign him? Well for a start they knew Liverpool were after him. The two rich boys in blue have both utilized a strategy of buying up players they knew other teams wanted just because they could always gazump other clubs. Some very good players have had their careers badly affected by this, Wright-Phillips a case in point.

If we can now get SS for a relatively low £5m and avoid the baggage of Paul Ince then we'd be getting a good player in a good deal. Tom Ince is a good player but has been doing it outside the Premiership and his dad has been grinding his axe against his former club ever since he left. Could be SS would be the better buy as he doesn't bring the need for headache tablets!

  28. I have serious reservertions to the argument that BR "has worked with him before" re: Joe Allen & Borini.... I rest my case.

Take him on loan for a year (paying only a portion of his salary) and let him prove his worth?
If he is only average, we have a squad player for a season to add depth without any initial layout... if he proves his worth we pay the pre-arranged fee.
