'I will return' - Reds hero claims he's coming back to LFC 'one day'

Despite a series of good results recently, Rafa Benitez continues to have a tough time at Stamford Bridge, and a hardcore section of the club's fans remain determined to drive him out of Stamford Bridge. The Spaniard knows that he'll be gone in the summer, but when the hammer falls, Benitez wants to continue coaching in England, and he is convinced that a return to Liverpool is on the cards someday.

In an interview with Spanish newspaper Marca last night, Benitez said:

"My idea is to keep coaching a competitive team.

"Why not in England? We have to wait and see. I will return to Liverpool one day almost certainly, I just don't know when"

Benitez seems pretty confidence that he'll get another crack at the Liverpool job he covets so much, but is this just wishful thinking on his part?

Benitez admitted in the past that FSG didn't even approach him to take over from Kenny Dalglish, which clearly suggests they don't see him as a managerial option, so he'd probably have to wait until new owners took over at Anfield, and who knows when that is going to happen?

I wanted Benitez out in his final year, and I still maintain that the the club made the right decision. However, at some point in the future, I wouldn't be averse to his return. Experience changes managers, and I'm sure Benitez will learn, grow and become a better coach. Combine that with his special affinity with LFC, and a second spell in charge could be an enticing prospect.

I can't see it happening for at least 3-5 years, however, and nor should it. Brendan Rodgers needs to be given a solid chance at Anfield, and despite the growing pains during his first season, there are plenty of positives to take into next season.

It'll be interesting to see how many fans would take Benitez back next season, though.

  1. I think Benitez is undoubtedly a great manager, but I definitely agree Rodgers needs more time. you will find that a lot of liverpool fans are a fan of rafa, jaimie.

  2. In fact, rafa's current situation reminds me of batman at the end of the dark knight, a hero who was driven away, and then spent years in the wilderness, until coming back after a long time in the dark knight returns.

  3. No idea if I would want him back now, but one thing I am sure about is that we would at least not have been in a worse condition now had we kept Benitez in 2010. And I am sure he would not have wasted the astronomical amount of money Dalglish splashed out on the deadwood that is still sinking us.

  4. IMO if you are going to give a lot of money to build a team to get you back into the champions league and the choice was Benitez or Rogers then I'd have to say that I would give it to Benitez. Not convinced the Rogers will spend the money wisely. That's not to say that Benitez would be my first choice either.

    ReplyDelete
  5. Right now, Rodgers is performing as expected so I don't see what Rafa could do better. Going on his final couple of years, I also don't know whether I would like to see him be given Kenny D type money. And it's not like he's been very convincing since then. As a supporter of the club I respect what he's done for us and I'm greatful for this but I don't think, at the end of it, that he was so special that he should be brough back.

  6. Since Rafa has left we have done nothing hodgson nothing dalglish carling cup rodgers is 7-8 th like what was the point of sacking king ? rodgers is selling players to buy players next will be coates downing carroll pacheco skrtel plus 5 mil chelsea still owe. how the hell diffrent is that to what rafa had to do sell before buy.rafa bougt flops so has rodgers assadi allen borini so farin one year. FSG is to blame no diffrent then hicks gillett every year you say next year next year never come suarezwill also leave. then you will all hate him to like torres rather then stop dreaming on what we dont on passed. peter pan is not real people and we are no where near top 4

  7. jaimie your seriously not saying we should give rodgers another 3/5 years on current form ,also i see downing played whilst ill on sunday the latest of rodgers bad man management episodes its only a matter of time before one of rodgers fitness gambles backfires massively and explodes in his face hope its not with suarez and its carear threatening ,and before people say its downings deccision to play thats what rodgers gets paid for, also it may have cost us 3 more points on sunday who knows,on to benitez why not give him another go its obviouse he wants to come back to succeed and not for the money and although he had a dip towards the end of his first spell i,am sure 99%of fans would rally round his return ,i think when we play chelsea the fans voice and opinion will be clear to see

  8. Rodgers has improved the team this year, however he has a long way to go to match a world class manager like Rafa Benitez.

Rafa will be back again - when Liverpool are looking to win the Champions League instead of merely qualifying for it.

  9. I would take Rafa back at the end of the season. This is only for one main reason and a couple i have listed below; i believe he is a better manager than BR and it would not be like a new manager coming in as he already knows how Liverpool tick. The benefits over BR in my mind are as follows:

    - He would demand perfection and not go around praising players for nothing.
    - He got the best out of everyone at Liverpool no manager has managed to get the best out of Gerrard, Carra Renia and Agger. He practically made gerrard the player he is.
    - He reinvented the academy and we now have his players saving BR ass e.g kelly, stirling, suso etc
    - He will attract better players
    - He is more experienced in Europe and as a manager.
    - Can handle pressure and top players.
    - Lastly He gave us the two best games i have ever witnessed and still to this day go on you tube and get hairs standing on the back of my neck when i watch it.

The only reason i would not have benitez at Liverpool is to honor BR in some hope he gets it right next season. What I do believe is; If Benitez was given 200 million plus by new owners what he was not battling on a daily basis over the last 2 years, do i believe he would of turned it around? without a doubt.

Lastly, people keep saying we have progressed from Benitez and last year but we have had 3 different managers, 3 different playing styles and not moved a bit in the way of league form, cup runs. No matter what style you play, its about winning. wether you pass the ball a 100 times or once to score.

Progress is judged on what you win and where you finish, we will finish 7th this season, (never looked at all like challenging for top 4), out of all cup competitions early and in nearly 50 games this season we have only managed to beat 1 top 4 team; Spurs. Please someone tell me how these results are better than last year and i dont what stuff like we will be better next year under BR because the facts above say we probably wont!!! this is ultimately why i would rather have Benitez as if it does go south next year, trying to get a top manager in will not be possible and the only reason why we can even hope to get a manager of Benitez esteem is the fact he still loves Liverpool

  10. I think Nick's comments reflect the view of a majority of LFC fans - Brendan Rodgers has had a broadly positive impact at Liverpool so far and Liverpool fans (thankfully) understand that stability and continuity are essential elements of success at a football club. At the same time, if you gave me the choice of bringing Rafa back at the end of the season, I would bite your hand off ...

    ReplyDelete
  11. but i do not think we will get near qualifying for it imo this season could be rodgers best chance and he blew it the top teams will not drop as many points and give lfc as many chances to close the gap again next season ,and what as rodgers done when we have been presented with these chances blown them every time

  13. there is not a chance of rafa returning under fsg god they have there yes man there keeping him mouriniho could say he wanted the job but unless he can keep his mouth shut and kiss a$$ fsg would not be interested

    ReplyDelete
  14. I think Benitez is a much better coach than when he was at Liverpool. BR is not bad, but I do think he has a lot to learn, especially kissing players arses all the time.

  19. I wanted to see Benitez stay for at least one more season at the time, I think he deserved that at least. I'm not overly sure I would like to see him return again though because with the way supporters treated King Kenny I would not like to see Rafa treated the same. We are quickly running out of legendary managers so I would rather not mess with the past.

    ReplyDelete
  20. when rodgers leaves he can always come back because it will not matter how we treat him as he will be nowhere near a legend

    ReplyDelete
  21. i dont want rafa, but i dont want Rodgers either. how did u guys see imporvement from last season? liverpool plays almost same football as last season, if not worse. last season we all know how unlucky we were in front of goals, missing so many chances and hitting the woodwork so many times. the defence was solid and there was a balance in the team. Dalglish took the team when we were really mediocre, and made us play good football and we on the right way to success. we went on two cup finals also. what did rodgers do better than kenny? every time he is pointing out that he took liverpool from a very bad state, this is what he wants us to believe. but that wasnt the case, definitely. the team went on two cup finals, and if were not so unlucky in so many match we would have been in the cl as well. rodgers is a joke, and no big player will want to sign for liverpool as long as he is here, coz they dont no him, he doesnt have a reputation apart a big mouth..we just gonna see some other assaidi, borini, allen, sahin (a great player who doesnt know how to use him the proper way) next season. this is the kind of players that he can attract. all that he tells the guys is 'go on the pitch, keep possession, we gonna be barca' lol we can never turn a match around when a team is dominating us or when we losing, because rodgers doesnt have any tactical knowledge. opponents are just happy to see us pass the ball without any threat. mid table teams like swansea like to see their team have lot of possession and winning 1 or 2 match in 6 match and avoid relegation.. but WE ARE LIVERPOOL! rodgers is fooling us with his supposedly beautiful football and that we are progressing, but the fact remains we have not, and we are not! WAKE UP guys!

  22. Rafa got 6 seasons and only managed one good run in the league despite taking over the club when it was far far more stable than when Brendan stepped in. I would seriously consider removing my tattoos and say good bye to 35 years of supporting this club if we were ever to re-sign Rafa.
Given the terrible situtation this club was in when Brendan came in I think he's done a terrific job. I have no doubt in my mind we're moving in the right direction under Brendan. The fact of the matter is that the squad isn't ready yet for CL-footy and it never was. It is incredible how people can draw so far reaching conclusions based on this season.

There is a sense of togetherness in the team I haven't seen on this side of no. 18. Admittedly we still lack the mental toughness, ruthlessness and sheer quality to win certain game. But for the first time in a very very very long time I can sense the spiraling emergence of an identity. It won't be established in one, let alone two, seasons (ask Shanks or Fergie for references). But it will one day and I'm convinced Brendan's the right man to get us there.
I think this anti-Rodgers campaing that goes on, on this website is a disgrace. Get behind your manager and your team or shut up.

    ReplyDelete
  23. you tell people to get behind rodgers and shut up yet say you would seriously consider stop support lfc if rafa returns you a f"cking hypocrit , i was not to bothered if rafa returned or not but now i want him back 100% and you and rodgers can run of in the sun together

    ReplyDelete
  24. Jamie, why no figures comparing Rodgers first full season to KK and RB? could be an interesting read to compare them at the same no of games in their Ist season in the leagues. In the Cups it's obvious- Rafa, then KK then BR. But what about the league?
I keep hearing how solid we were last year in the league but I'm sure we've lost at least as many last year if not more than this season. And we only scored 47 goals all last year.
I think it's too soon for Benitez to return, this version of Liverpool hasn't reached it's potential yet. But Rodgers has some way to go..

    ReplyDelete
  25. jaimie let the posts go live or ban me stop wasting my time

    ReplyDelete
  26. What is interesting is BR will have to win 5 out of the last 6 matches to pip by 1 point the woeful 63 points which got Rafa the sack. What is more interesting if he did win 5/6 he would be regarded as a success and we are going forward but in fact we will have spent 250 million to move 1 point in 3 years, now that's progress!!!! The only thing we have progressed in, is the expectations and what we regard as success. Under Benitez we won against the top sides on the planet but now we would take 3 points against reading and hope we can win against everton if we play at our absolute best and hope everton have an off day.

    ReplyDelete
  27. No way will he learn he's too stubborn to

    ReplyDelete
  28. your a hypocrit plain and simple just because your head is stuck up rodgers rectum we all have to go along with what you say or your going to stop supporting the club ,good get rafa back now and you go get your tats done

    ReplyDelete
  29. terrible situation, good owners, lots of cash , just won a cup and in a final of another, a team that beat the likes of man city, chelsea, man utd on their day. An academy built by Rafa that was finally producing. this season, BR has mostly won on the back of KD and Rafa's work. his own signings of Borini, allen, assadi, yesil are yet to prove anything. We where not in a bad situation.

    ReplyDelete
  30. looks like the rumour about Alderweireld maybe true but its interesting how top players now see liverpool!!!

Usually I do not want to play for an English club that’s in mid-table,’ said Alderweireld. ‘But, unlike Newcastle, Liverpool meet my [other] criteria.’

    ReplyDelete
  31. Martin - great shout. Am sick of all these people who attack Rogers on basis of reputation. Every manager starts somewhere and even Shanks wasn't a top manager when he arrived, and as for being 'scared' of top players there's just no evidence for it.
Yes, he could do with toning down the superlatives with the media a bit but every manager has his foibles - Kenny was always too defensive and ended up coming across as aggressive. Given time, and now he has his own people involved in scouting/recruitment (which wasn't the place last summer) so his buys will improve (Coutinho).

Being an LFC supporter was always about giving the manager a fair shake but it seems that most are now just as patient as Chelsea fans>

    ReplyDelete
  32. lol why do you agree or do you think he has shown he was worth what we plad for him

    ReplyDelete
  33. what is even more interesting is if he lost the last 6 games some supporters would still see him as a success

    ReplyDelete
  34. you are a hypocrit get behind your team or shut up ,what you mean is you love rodgers and we all have to go along with you,and if rafa comes back at the end of the season you will stop supporting the club because its your way or no way

NO MORE DEFENSIVE COACHES! I've had enough of being bored to tears by Houllier and Rafa. Although I respect them both there were games when I knew we wouldn't score because of our rigidity. We can't go back to that.

If rodgers does go, lets follow the SWANSEA philosophy and bring in a manager who will continue and advance on what Rodgers has started.

    ReplyDelete
  36. sorry typo apparently its 15 mil left for torres payment

    ReplyDelete
  37. It's obvious you really like Rodgers as a manager and you don't want to admit it, right?

    ReplyDelete
  38. Personally I'd like to see both Rogers and Rafa working together. Rogers as head coach and Rafa as Manager. Rogers has proven he is a good coach, but is tactically lacking whereas Rafa has proven he is a tactical genius and both of them looking at players to bring in to the team would be better than just the one - Rogers looking at if they can play a short passing game and Rafa looking at if they can fit into his formations. Just a thought, but it could work - if both men wanted it to.

    ReplyDelete
  39. I'd take him back. I'm sure he can do wonders with the current squad which is actually almost better than anything he ever had with the exception of no cover for our leftback spot. Sturridge is an upgrade on Torres, Suarez an upgrade on Kuyt, Coutinho a Mata/Silva type player we had been crying out for, Downing and Sterling the orthodox wide options we never had, Henderson in place of Barry that he was eyeing and forming a perfect balance with Lucas and Gerrard/Shelvey. He would love to have Carroll as an oversized backup option as with any Sacchi wannabe manager, and Borini is actually better than Voronin or N'Gog.

    ReplyDelete
  40. 'NO MORE DEFENSIVE COACHES'
Well you certainly got your wish Rodgers.
He doesn't do defense, PERIOD!!. LOL.

Honestly, how can you possibly have that opinion after our dismal defensive displays this season?

You cant win games if you ship more goals than you score.

    ReplyDelete
  41. i do not like him as a person imo hes a bully and a egomaniac

    ReplyDelete
  42. please if we do get rid of rodgers lets not continue on what rodgers has started or we will surely be in a relugation dogfight

    ReplyDelete
  43. never in a million years we have tried joint managers before and it did not work and with these two theres no chance

    ReplyDelete
  44. if your doing a fair comparison on there 1st season make sure you take kenny 1st season with that i mean ist time round

    ReplyDelete
  45. I'd give BR another season. Then, go for Ancelotti. After that, Benitez,

    ReplyDelete
  46. why the Vote Down doesn't work?

    ReplyDelete
  47. you clearly don't like roger i wonder what he personally did to you?

    ReplyDelete
  48. Absolutely nail on the head there Jason. There is a hell of a lot of deluded fans out there right now. I don't know if its BRs waffle or the fact we can put together 2 or 3 decent moves in a game but it's very worrying how expecations have fallen and we have to give a guy time when there is nothing in his CV that suggests he will bring us any success.

    Worrying times indeed.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Hey Joseph wats the point in you moaning about Rafas return when actali you are the very same undecided fans who called for his sacking in his final year when we came out 6 and missed out on champions league, you gave him all sorts of names like arrogant, stubborn and lacking good tactics, perhaps why didnt the FSG consider him when they were looking for a manager after KD's sack last year,Liverpool have been in turmoil ever since we sold Alonso,Macherano,Aberloa to some extent,he Rafa hated Alonso when he lost form and tried replacing him with Barry but unfortunately it dint work out,Xabi felt undermined and unwanted he later left for madrid i blame Rafa for those high profile departures i prefer Rodgers though his young and unproven, his been brought in to lay foundations for the future i know some section of fans dislike BR because his never won anything in his career but i hope next season he improves our squad and bring in quality signings then we can challenge for top four dont judge him on one season

    ReplyDelete
  50. HAHAHAHA is this the same defensive coach that made LFC top scorers in 08-09 with an attacking pressing game fine tuned while he was at Valencia?

Please do cite your evidence whilst making such comments.

    ReplyDelete
  51. were to start oh well he made imself look a fool on that documentory then there was the 1st game of the season when he made lfc a laughing stock then it went down hil

    ReplyDelete
  52. Rafa needs to return asap. BR has presided over the worst start since.... whenever and treated the domestic cups as a joke (or did he really try to win those games against Swansea and Oldham - that should NEVER be forgotten). He makes basic errors of judgement and will no doubt be raiding Swansea for more players this summer if he stays.

This season has been one big failure. Forget transition and if we have improved. We haven't. We rarely beat top teams, struggle against up for it teams and only beat awful teams well. Welcome to Swansea part two.

Wake up LFC fans - this is FSGs vision. Mid to lower table mediocrity.

We really need to wake up and not be blinded by PR waffle from the club or BR.

    ReplyDelete
  53. i recently asked a swansea fan to rate swansea citys last 3 managers and rodgers was last, and thats not bitterness as they also lost martinez, rodergs completly inherited is team from martinez ,when rodgers left there 3 best supposed players left but laudrop has improved them all the people asking for rodgers to be given time what about clarke at westbrom laudrop at swansea and the new man at spurs they did not need time ,but rodgers needs a season and still cannot get it right

    ReplyDelete
  54. In contrast to you mate I'm not caught up in nostalgia based on a good cup run. Re-signing Rafa would mark a major step back for the club and its ambitions. Rodgers is our manager and as such deserve our full backing until proven unfit for the position which, IMHO, is at least 14 months away at the very least.
I supported Rafa wholeheartedly for 4 seasons, then it was evident he put his own ego before the club's interest while also losing the dressing room. Just because I don't want a return to that doesn't mean I don't support my club.
It is clear Rodger's have some things to learn and improve on (Rafa doesn't?), but he's also proven very capable. Thankfully the vast majority of LFC fans are made up of knowledgeable people and so is the people who run this club. Therefore we will witness the rise of Liverpool Football Club. You'll eat humble pie from bowls one of these days my friend.

I like Rodgers, if given time he could build something good, I don't think Rafa would ever come back (under FSG they want to play the same style and keep to it like Swansea) our down point this season has been our defence letting us down(that will be sorted in the summer) also we had a slow start to the season(which was expected)

    ReplyDelete
  56. There is much to say about every manager. I don't like Benitez very much, I preffer Dalglish, I would give time to Brendan.

One important fact exists which Jamie pointed out in the following post:

    http://www.liverpool-kop.com/2013/03/lfc-progress-under-brendan-rodgers-proof.html

Please check it. I thing it speaks for it self. No need to comment.

BR is doing well. He deserves time.

  57. rodgers shud get time upto jan 2014 nd after that...DEPENDS!!!!

  58. Am assuming you are the one man team that is trying to bring BR down right??? Keep it up! SAF had people like you when he first started as matter of fact he still does!!!

    ReplyDelete
  59. i can stand if we have to change manager again, we are not Chelsea!!!
Rodgers has brought in a game that is exciting to watch, we dominate in posession and create alot of chances. the idears are their it's just a matter of bringing in more players that can fullfill this philosophy and the academy is helping on that!
the reason we don't see progress over the years is that we have changed the style of our play.
I believe we need to stick with this one for at least two more seasons a see where it takes us!
    Get behind your manager

    ReplyDelete
  60. Laudrup and Clarke's teams are both below Liverpool. What's your point?

    ReplyDelete
  61. no infact i think you will find the number is growing by the match

    ReplyDelete
  62. so you did not sopport rafa for the last 2 seasons but you have the nerve to try and tell everyone to get behind rodgers like i said your a hypocrit

    ReplyDelete
  63. laudrups teams in europe clark as achieved more than is target was rodgers has spent most than both put together and done f"ck all whats your point

    ReplyDelete
  64. hes a fact one more goal conceded equals last seasons tally

    ReplyDelete
  65. I Agree Jamie. a wise summary.

    ReplyDelete
  66. Yep, I've got to agree with JK's sentiments (though I didn't want Rafa sacked, barring an excellent appointment and especially not if Roy was going to replace him [though I'd yet to realise how bad Roy would be, obviously]).
If we did sack Rodgers and bring in Rafa, if nothing else, like with Kenny, it'd bring a smile to my face. It may not be agreeable with the brain, but my heart would be singing.

    ReplyDelete
  67. Do you mean in the 80s or the first 6 months of his second coming?
I don't think it'd be unfair just to judge his one full season from his second time in charge, because you'd be judging that team and that regime more than you would be judging Kenny.

    ReplyDelete
  68. Spoilers! Gah!

    :p

I think the Dark Knight analogy would work better if Torres came back. First of all, we all think he is a villain now and secondly, his legs don't seem to work properly any more.

    ReplyDelete
  69. That is my big thought. Maybe it was time for Rafa to go when he did, but we can certainly say that even if you think sacking him was right (I didn't support the decision), you can agree that more or less every subsequent decision has been incorrect.

    ReplyDelete
  70. According to who, my good fellow?

    ReplyDelete
  71. The progress of this season is very much debatable. Better in the league, but worse in the cups.
I'd also say that I personally think there were more games last season that we should have won than this year.

    ReplyDelete
  72. Seriously?! Wow! Even Jaimie is making the turn around and you think people are going to ask for BR to be fired??? You are right there are a few people like yourself who thinks nobody is good enough to coach LFC except people like yourself! Let's blame everybody else except us right?? LFC is about to grow, slowly but surely. Changing managers will not speed the process.

    ReplyDelete
  79. I would like to see rafa back you can tell Liverpool means a lot to him, and as for rogers what did he do at Swansea that was so great anyway ... Steadied the ship .

    ReplyDelete
  80. Well like I said-I deal in fact, not "should have"s. there are a growing list of benchmarks that point to clear progress and on top of a clearing of the bloated squad/wage situation, a unification of the style of play through the age groups and clear unity amongst the club, players and staff.

    ReplyDelete
  81. My point is your comparison doesn't stand up to scrutiny. Laudrup sacrificed league position for league cup glory-and rightfully so as Swans had an empty trophy cabinet-much like we did last season. I'm not sure Clarke as achieved his target as I don't know West Brom's aspirations, do you? My other point is that Rodgers has made progress in rebuilding our club with a solid foundation, something that requires an understanding of the big picture to appreciate.

    ReplyDelete
  82. We were paid the full sum for Torres by Chelsea.

    ReplyDelete
  83. If you want to compare stats from last season that will be the only one you've got. All other stats are better this season across the board. Goal difference-check, goals scored-check, clean sheets-check, possession-check, chances created-check, completed passes-check. ...and most importantly-wins-check.

    ReplyDelete
  84. west brom where stone cold favourites to go down this year. What steve clarke has achieved this year is equivalent of BR winning the league!!!

    ReplyDelete
  85. Fact are Facts, yes and FSG are here to make a profit in the cheapest way they can.

    ReplyDelete
  86. Why should Rafa return who wants him back after selling Alonso i will never forgive him

    ReplyDelete
  87. I love Rafa but I want us to stick with Rodgers as long as hes doing well and taking the team forward he should be kept, it wouldnt be fair if lets say in 5 years and Rodgers had brought the team back to top 4 for some seasons and built a strong team and Rafa just coms in and takes over, Rodgers deserves better than that

    ReplyDelete
  88. I would love Rafa back. Not right now mind as BR is manager but in the future if things looked like we were changing managers then I would love him to return. I`m not blind to his errors but I just felt like he was in tune with us. I loved how he represented us and I loved some of the players he brought to us and the amazing games we had. Is he still as good? I don`t know.

  89. oh dear God please no dont let this happen. This would be a massive step backwards. Rafas tactics (overall) were too negative and boring. His signings were hit or miss and he eventually took Liverpool, Inter and possibly Chelsea backwards. He's become a joke. Give Rodgers more time, he is doing ok and the style he is trying to impose is actually good to watch for a change. Rodgers will do well if given another season. Rafa will just take the club backwards, again.

  90. That's patently false. Show me one article relating to that preposterous assertion.

  92. So why our lowly position on the table, going by your glowing 'statistics'
    everything must be rosy. LOL!!
I don't see it, and neither does our position on the table... she don't lie
    !!

We've spent a lot on time, effort and money with Rodgers and what has
    been our net gain?
If that's the best evidence you can offer then I suggest we've wasted our time.

    Ultimately, the table doesn't lie.

    ReplyDelete
  93. Talk about rose tinted glasses.
    Problem? What problems? LOL!!

    ReplyDelete
  94. Benchmarks?

By what absurd metrics are basing that on for Rodgers?

Most of what you harp on about was started long before Rodgers was at the
    club.

So how do you attribute that to him?

    ReplyDelete
  95. But we don't have anyone comparable to Alonso and Mascherano.

    ReplyDelete
  96. The trimming of the squad isn't something I'd credit Rodgers with. If you are counting that as progress for the club as a whole, rather than an action by Rodgers, then fair enough. I've no quarrel with FSG.
Again though, without insider knowledge of the day-to-day running of the club, you can't really compare unity throughout the echelons of the club under Dalglish and Rodgers without a large degree of conjecture.

  97. damn right - id have him back like a shot. He brought in quality, took us to the top in europe and fergie hates him. Fergie only hates those he feels threatened by. BR has his own vision but in the long term we will be dead and Benitez clearly has the club in his heart.

Total BS. If we made a profit from Rafa's signings then his amount recouped would be more than his amount spent so you have been completely misinformed.

  103. The good times are back6:56 am, April 10, 2013

Yeah, the table did not lie in Rafa's first and last season either.

In his first season we won the CL yet we failed to qualify for the following season's CL. We finished 5th in 2004/2005 but were given grace to take part because we won it. So you can win the CL but fail to qualify for it?

Rafa's last season we finished seventh and don't forget that we were knocked out of the CL group stage.

So you are spot on. The table does not lie does it?

    ReplyDelete

  107. Given the terrible state the club was in when Brendan took over! Whilst Benitez was in charge the owners had about flushed us down the toilet, Brendan has come into the club with it in a much more secure state than when Benitez was in charge. Granted the playing staff situation was poorer but again that wasn't Benitez than was Woy and Kennys doing. Your an absolute joke, think first then speak. Here's hoping you do get your tats removed to support someone else I hear Villa fans are happy with mediocrity at the moment perhaps they'll have you.

Jason, Rodgers took over a team which had not qualified for Europe 3 seasons running. When Rafa took over as manager he had a team that qualified for Europe the previous season under Houllier but then Rafa finished 5th 2004/2005 which does not qualify for the CL.

Also, you talk about silverware? We have won only 1 trophy in 6 seasons.

I feel for you Jason. Are you aware that Rodgers contract only expires in 2015?

    ReplyDelete
  111. So with your vast wisdom who should be the manager then?? You mention a lot about LFC problems but you never give any solutions. We are not in the 80s anymore, these days you have to spend a lot of money which I see you are in favor of even if we go bankrupt. l mean we spent how much last year and where was our position again??

    ReplyDelete
  112. arly every betting site in the uk had them at firm favorites to go down. to me they specialize in having a good knowledge of what may happen. In respect to Steve Clarke, he has over achieved and done over and above what was expected.

    ReplyDelete
  113. Really not sure about this to be honest, every time I think of Rafa I think of Istanbul and the FA cup final against West Ham. My main gripe with him is how he manages to rub players/staff up the wrong way. There is something endearing about him though and perhaps he may have learned from his past mistakes, who knows.

    ReplyDelete
  114. So what, a huge amount of them were crap and he left the club out of the CL

    ReplyDelete
  115. Sturridge looks good too and Rodgers possession style of play is much better to watch IMO. .. Borini tho is crap.

    ReplyDelete
  116. Couldn't have said it any better myself

    ReplyDelete
  117. Completely disagree that our football is no different to last seasons. We keep possession much better and since Christmas have been generally, although not always, very good in our attacking play - and much better than we were for the 2011/12 season.

When Kenny came back in after Roy, he righted the ship again, but in his second season the club was lost its way and confidence began to collapse again. At times during the 2011/12 season we seemed to have no clear plan of how we wanted to play. And before you mention two cup finals, lets face it, us getting to Wembley twice was blood 'n' guts stuff. I'll admit this has its place ala Istanbul, but it won't get you far in the league when your tasked with grinding out results week in week out.

Clearly the team still has some way to go until we can count ourselves ready for CL charge, never mind a title challenge, but I think BR has made a good start and if he adds a bit more steel to our midfield and sorts our defence out during the summer I will be going into next season expecting us to be making a really good fight for CL places.

One more point, while the Premier League title winners don't seem to be at the same level they were when Rafa was in charge, I think that there are now three more teams who can can consider themselves as capable of making a challenge for Champions League places - these being Spurs, Everton and Man City (who are title conteneders) - than there were for most of Rafa's reign. During most of Rafa's time the only serious contenders were ourselves, Utd, Arsenal, and Chelsea. So the job BR is tasked with to get us back into the CL is a tougher one than Rafa had in my opinion.

    ReplyDelete
  118. The miracle of Istanbul, CL semi-finals v Chelsea x 2, Olympiacos at Anfield, West Ham at Cardiff, the Torres bounce and Johnny Cash, definitely the best years as a LFC supporter since the heady days of the late ‘80s.

Rafa will always be a hero to the majority of Red’s (Alonso’s treatment excluded) but taking him back now would IMO be wrong…of course he loves Liverpool and Liverpool FC, who wouldn't? He was a demi-God,
his family still live there…but look at the FACTS, FSG didn't even have him on the short-list to replace KD, they choose BR and they are a stubborn lot, they won’t sack him after year 1…

Like him or loath him why don’t we just get behind him, at least until January next. He’s surely entitled to that, he needs to buy well in the summer and get us seriously challenging for at least a top 4 finish, if he doesn't then we should start debating in a constructive manner…some of the comments on this topic and on BR in general are fodder to Mancs and other anti- Liverpool twats… we've suffered
enough let’s not give them more ammo with petty bickering

    Liverpool supporters
are the best in the world – FACT

    We stand by our own
through thick and thin – FACT

    Brendan Rodgers is the
current manager and barring something unforeseen will be at the start of
    2013/14 –FACT

    Let’s get behind LFC and
not jump on the latest available bandwagon…

    ReplyDelete
  119. position about the same as this plus another 50 million rodgers as had,i do not have anything personal against rodgers he just should not have been given the job due to his lack of experience i would like to see one like big sammy with rafa as a helping hand apart from that the cupboard is bare because no decent manager would take the job unless fsg open the purse strings

    ReplyDelete
  120. sturridge as not impressed me it shows how far our standards have dropped when were getting excited about players like sturridge

    ReplyDelete
  121. now your talking entertainment,in my three envolpes would be allen number3 borini number 2 and the winner is rodgers

  122. sorry m8 we were in the europa league this year something rodges messed up and god help us if he sees out is contract by then nearly all fans will be accustomed to expecting nothing every season

    ReplyDelete
  123. sorry m8 i agree with a lot you say but rodgers should get 6 to 10 games max next season to turn it round if the results carry on like this season he has to go

    ReplyDelete
  124. Yet you conveniently ignore what happened between the those years. Nice!!

We became the No1 ranked team in Europe, including two finals, came the closest to winning the league in decades, built a spine to the team that had our supporters singing 'we have the best midfield in the world', and lastly, his demise and that of the club was in large part due to Hicks&Gillett. Remember them?

So please, do let us know when Rodgers equals that...

    ReplyDelete
  125. Point being, many teams are below Liverpool because they cant compete
financially with us, not because Rodgers is a better coach.

    ReplyDelete
  126. I was, am and
(hopefully) will remain a big Rafa fan and much as I was delighted when Kenny
came back I’d have Rafa back in a heartbeat, but all indicators point to FSG
having no interest in him so where do we go? Unfortunately I don’t think the
current situation at Liverpool will endear any of the top 5 or 6 managers who
we would all love to see at the helm take on the job.

    Starting out AGAIN
with a ‘’young promising’’ manager or an old ‘’steady hand’’ is not the way
either, I believe that with 4-5 good signings, not necessarily £20m+ players
and not all strictly under 25 (look at Diame against us home and away) and a
kind enough fixture list we can get off to a good start, build momentum and get
the confidence up….if we get even 75% of the above and BR makes no progress
then certainly he needs to be replaced.

    I cringed watching ‘’NOT
being Liverpool’’ and he does himself no
favours with his post-match comments and refusal to criticise brutal
performances, however I hope I’m right in my belief that if he gets the right
players and breaks he could start the rebuilding of a European superpower…

Who cares about the Europa league?

    ReplyDelete
  132. The good times are back4:52 pm, April 10, 2013

No I am not ignoring anything. Rafa's first season in the EPL was sh*te and his last season was even worse. Houllier also came close to winning the league and so did Roy Evans.

Rafa destroyed the team which finished second in 08/09. He got rid of Hyppia, Alonso, Arbeloa and replaced them with Johnson, the Greek and Aquilani. No wonder 09/10 was such a disaster. Well done Rafa :-o

Rodgers cant turn things around in one season. If Shankly was alive he would tell you the same thing.

    ReplyDelete
  133. The good times are back5:04 pm, April 10, 2013

What does 5th matter. The aim is to finish in the top 4 but Rafa could not even do that in his first season with a team that he inherited which finished in the top 4 the previous season. Rafa then totally mucked it up in his last season.

    Rodgers took over a team that finished 7th in 09/10, 6th in 10/11 and 8th in 11/12.

I bet it is all Rodgers fault that we have not finished in the top 4 for 3 seasons running and have only collected one trophy in 6 seasons.

You need to add 1 + 1 to get 2. Some people struggle to understand this simple form of mathematics. Are you one of those?

    ReplyDelete
  134. You continue to disregard Benitez's achievements because they don't suit your agenda.

When did we last win the European Cup?

When did we last win the FA cup?

Who's come the closest to winning the league recently?

The goods times arent back, they left with Benitez.

Its just that some cant be honest with themselves.

    ReplyDelete
  135. Come on Mate!! You just made a good point on why Rodgers should not had gotten the job but then you go back and say you want Big Sammy to take over. As much as I am a big fan of Big Sammy but the legend just started coaching so how is he different?! I could see him coming to LFC Not RB!! FSG are following the footsteps of BvB. Three years ago Borrusia Dortmund were not on anybody's mind now look at them. Klopp was a nobody also!

    ReplyDelete
  136. The good times are back6:32 pm, April 10, 2013

No I am not disregarding what he achieved. He won the CL in in his first season. Then won the FA Cup in his second.

Fast forward 4 season later with a squad of his own but not one piece of silverware.

Rafa needed to go in order for us to move forward and finally the signs are there :)

    ReplyDelete
  137. It's called poor distribution of goals. We've had many huge winning scorelines under Rodgers that we could have otherwise used in games we drew or lost.

    ReplyDelete
  142. You cannot be serious!!! If am going to manage a team I don't think I want someone overseeing me!! If you are not ready to manage a team don't apply for it! Like I said in our above comments you are more about slamming the coach than solving the problem! It easy to put a blame on someone rather than coming up with a solution.

    ReplyDelete
  143. Rafa Benitez will improve system tiki taka now.Under B.Rodgers LFC have look many diffrent and changing new style of playing. But the problem is this season LFC still playing with slowly tiempo.Sometimes Luis Suarez is lonely in penalty box during making counter attack.Downing is speedy player?? No...no.... i don't think so.While Suarez lonely to counter attack inside penalty box, just coutinho will assist behind or beside him.Others players on the way...and very late to help him.Current team now not to strong because quality of players not system of playing.Goal leaking also very bad and big weaknes.Downing, Carroll,Borini is top priority players need to sell out next season.I believe next season R.Benitez will do the same thing if he realy incharge LFC.

    ReplyDelete
  144. Much better if LFC can hire R.Benitez for Sporting Director jobs.Let he back up B.Rodgers duty when times needed.

    ReplyDelete
  145. well m8 then you do not get the job ,you get your experience at other clubs like rodgers should have and i do not mean one season of top flight football

    ReplyDelete
  146. You are contradicting yourself mate!! You don't want an inexperience coach like BR at LFC but you want an inexperience coach like Big Sammy with RB overseen him??! Yeah that makes a lot of sense!!! So as long as the inexperience coach is your favorite person it's ok??? RB will not wanna baby sit first of all and secondly Big Sammy will not want someone like Ralfa overshadowing him. You still have not come up with any solutions M8!!!!
