Over the last couple of months, Liverpool have been linked with summer moves for Aston Villa duo Christian Benteke and Andreas Weimann, and after they delivered performances against the Reds on Sunday, Brendan Rodgers made it clear that he really rates the the exciting pair.
Speaking to TalkSport on Tuesday, Rodgers - who insists the Reds will make a raft of new signings this summer - enthused:
"[Christian] Benteke [17 goals/8 assists this season] is one of the very top players at this level.
"[Andreas] Weiman is a terrific young player who makes great runs and scores goals, and he caused us lots of problems."
A few weeks ago, the Daily Mail claimed that Liverpool are 'weighing up a move' for £15m-rated Benteke:
"Manchester City, Tottenham, Liverpool and Arsenal have all had their interests piqued by the Belgian’s impressive start to his Premier League career"
According to recent reports in Austria:
"Liverpool are being unofficially kept updated over negotiations between the player and Villa, and are increasingly confident Weimann could be available for as little as £5million in the summer if he doesn’t sign up soon"
In an interview with The Telegraph last week, Benteke's Agent, Eris Kismet, hinted that the Belgian would consider a move at the end of the season. He said:
"At the end of the season, interested clubs will talk to Villa, but it has to be right the buying club and Christian. If all three parties are agreeable, something could happen"
Paul Lambert - who signed Benteke for £7.5m - will not want to lose the striker, but he may have no choice, especially if Villa get relegated. In an interview with ESPN in March, He raved about the Belgian hitman:
"He [Benteke] has been absolutely terrific. He does not seem to have had a dip. His performances have been at a really high standard. He has been top-class for us."
Liverpool definitely need another striker at the club. Sturridge and Suarez will score plenty of goals between them, but (IMO), they need extra competition to keep them sharp.
As for Weimann - do Liverpool need him? Where would he fit in? If Villa go down, will those two players stick around?

BANG £20MIL I love saying this OMG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
UTD UTD UTD. LOVE MAY TIME DONT YOU!!!!!!!
I'm confused by your comments about Weimann. You say we need a striker and then say you don't know where he would fit in. Do you just mean you don't rate him as a player?
ReplyDeletewhy are you on this web?
ReplyDeletethanks for confirming by thoughts that all utd fans are braindead
ReplyDeleteOhhhh, Benteke!
ReplyDeleteAndy Carroll, our record breaking signing, is a poor mans Benteke. An alternative, or even a partner to Suarez is exciting, very exciting.
He's built like a brick, who has incredible mobility. The ultimate target man. Certainly worth the quoted £15 million. However, if we were to sign him, inevitable another striker would be shunted towards the bench (probably Sturridge). Although, a still competition for places can only be a good thing, if managed correctly.
How old are you? 7 shouldn't you be asleep? Obsessed much
ReplyDeleteYou always know the rabid ones, they use lots and lots of exclamation marks with capital letters : )
ReplyDeleteWe should all be thankful to this guy for giving us a working definition of gobshite.
ReplyDeletemay 1974 oh yes one of my favs stuffin newcastle at wembley and dennis laws back heel and your last two cl finals why ? did u even bother turnin up
ReplyDeleteHe has made a big impression. Love how he is such a handful physically on the ground and air. Unsettles in defenders in such a direct manner, a la Drogba. But always a bit cautious about getting too excited over a player who only has a season of top league action (i.e., the four top leagues in Europe). If he keeps this sort of form up, he is the next Drogba. Weimann looks a handful, he seems to love playing off Benteke but I'm not that keen on him, as there are quite a few out there in the attacking mid role, whereas not many forwards out there of good quality. I reckon Spurs will get him and would be a good fit for them, whereas maybe not such a fluid fit for our system maybe.
ReplyDeleteno good these light nites ! you inbred mancs have to wait till8 bells for it to go dark before u sneek into ur sisters bedroom
ReplyDeletebenteke yes wieman im not sure about...one player who we are being linked with is jay rod at the saints...every time i see this kid play he looks class
ReplyDeletewhy are you on here timwin....are you a closet liverpool fan...i have never had the remotest interest on posting on a utd forum..im not going to have a go at you because you must be one lonely guy...good luck in life m8 i think you may need it
ReplyDeleteBenteke is class! He could play as part of a front 3 or lone striker. Alternatively soften the blow if Saurez leaves. As for Carroll he needs shipping out ASAP!
ReplyDeleteIf Rodgers rates Benteke so much, he can explain to my how it's possible that we have a partnership with Genk and we missed out not only on Benteke but also on Courtois, De Bruyne and are about to miss out on Vossen. It's not like we didn't need to sign a striker in the summer.
ReplyDeleteThe dilemma for Rodgers is that a big target man will only ever bean impact substitute or specialist selection against particularly physical opponents such as Stoke. We cannot waste £15m on a substitute and a player of Benteke's calibre would not tolerate a peripheral role. Having said all that we need a range of tactical alternatives when a short passing pressure game is not working. It would make most sense to sign a veteran for that role or promote a young player.
ReplyDeleteOur new scouting dept needs to be finding beteke's for 7.5m, not paying 15+ for them once they have 'arrived'.
ReplyDeleteBenteke is class but is he a buck player?
I think the austrian kid would be worth a punt if he was cheap. he could grow into something really special , and at relatively low risk, however, he would block some youth players paths.
I really hope we pick up some bargains this summer. we have been bled dry for average players(mostly) for too long now. its tiring.
Villa fan in peace, Weimann is our most important player in the squad, We haven't won a game without him this season and that says a lot, he makes the squad tick and never stops. He is also our most clinical player at the club, every one at Villa says he is even better at finishing than Darren Bent. Weimann is a striker who has played on the wing pretty much all season and combining in a 3 man attack. If I knew what this lad was capable and was another manager at another club I would easily pay 10m for his services and would be worth every penny. He has the potential to get even better and has a good 10 years left and could retire at the age of 32 and obviously this day and age strikers look after themselves better and can go on for longer. He would be an easy investment and also on a low wage compared to the average Prem player. I for one hope Villa tie him down for for 5 years. We need to be building around players like him and get us back to where we belong in the top 6.
ReplyDeleteBenteke on the other hand is an absolute beast. He is getting better and better, If I was a manager I would be interested to give him one more season to see what he is capable of and see if he isn't a one season wonder and then buy him next summer, although many managers will risk paying double the 15m they might possibly get him for.
Although Benteke has said he won;'t leave if we stay up and to be honest I don't blame him, He only turned 22 a few months back and has the time now to get comfortable in the Premiership, repay Villa for the faith and love the Fans have shown him and then see where we are in a few seasons time. Although I firmly believe we are creating some exciting new talent and if we keep the players we have now we can become a force again, Our under 19's have just become the European Champions as well.
If you get Benteke or Weimann you won't be disappointed,
Weimann is a striker, but I think he'd be stuck on the wing like Borini if he came to LFC. He's played wide a lot for Villa this season too. Benteke on the other hand would always play as a central striker (IMO) You're right though, I didn't make that very clear.
ReplyDeleteI've seen him play wide, and I suppose he would get shunted out a fair bit if he came here.
ReplyDeleteHe looks like someone Rodgers would like. He looks game rather than especially talented. I like him, but is about how he'll develop. I feel about him the same as I did about Borini before we bought him and that doesn't appear to have worked out.
Good movement, good effort, something of a goalscorer's instinct, but a quality player? I'm not sure.
The Genk partnership started Jan 2010 & finishes 2014, doesn't that make Dalglish more culpable. Imagine if he'd taken an £8mill punt on Benteke instead of a £35 mill punt on AC!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the input.
ReplyDeleteI like Weimann, he seems irrepressible, but I just wonder if he is a player who will get you into the Champions League.
I'm more suspicious of Benteke. I've seen him blow hot and cold a few times and I wonder how much he having the season of his life. Nice goal against us the other day having said that. I also don't like buying players at the height of their value, which Liverpool are the masters of.
rest easy mate you can be assured we will pay over the odds and you will also get the pick of any players you want from anfield at a knockdown price thats just the way we roll
ReplyDeleteHa ha I love this
ReplyDeleteNever really thought about this before.
ReplyDeleteOur buffoonery knows no bounds it seems.
Yes you are absolutely right! We are always behaving like a 'rich' club whereas in reality, we all know what we are right now. In terms of scouting players, we are severely lagging behind Everton, Aston Villa, Swansea and Newcastle. I don't know what those scouting people doing at the club.
ReplyDeleteTimwin the troll! :)
ReplyDeleteHe would be a very good signing.
ReplyDeleteYOU PEOPLE ARE STUPID.
ReplyDeleteGO MAN UNITED!!!
ReplyDeletelmao . . Jason i think you said it best!!!!!!!
ReplyDeletecheers m8 if i see sh1t i call it sh1t;-)
ReplyDeleteThat is correct for DeBruyne and Courtois of course but not for Benteke. The guy had one decent season at Genk last year but never the less, his strength and his ability were obvious. So seeing as Rodgers came in in the summer Benteke was signed, I don't understand how he could not have known about him. It's fair enough if he didn't rate him or didn't think he would be good enough but his comments seem to say the opposite. Unless of course he didn't rate him in the summer and has changed his mind now but my money would be on no one at Anfield even being aware Benteke was alive seeing as we'd already missed out on two players that would have definitely improved our squad/lineup. It always seems to me like we invest a lot more into these partnerships than we get out of them.
ReplyDeleteWho released the gimp?
ReplyDeleteAnd you need to take your medicine
ReplyDeletePsst JK....AT5 have us linked with a move for Ajax's Toby Alderweireld and they're usually in the know about all things Ajax...
ReplyDeleteHere's the vid http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d1Ul_4D9tWM
ReplyDelete.................?
ReplyDeleteWhat's his relegation buy-out?
ReplyDeleteRead my mind :-) I have a story already written about that and I'll post it later.
ReplyDeletedont be so hard on the kid. he obviously got born with umbilical cord around his neck and as soon as he got out he got hit by Polio. no fun picking the less fortunate
ReplyDeletei now it,s not fun but it makes me feel better;-)
ReplyDeletehe is a top target by all accounts. He has a hammer shot on him and looks very strong. I hope we get this guy.
ReplyDeleteTo be fair Eric our scouting has been weak for a long time mate. The one thing BR has done is to at least have a philosophy in place so that his transfer policy will more transparent & up for scrutiny!
