€9m star admits: It was 'hard to turn down LFC' transfer. Loss or relief...?

Last summer, Tottenham Hotspur infamously beat Liverpool to the signing of Gylfi Sigurdsson, a player who - at the time - seemed destined to follow Brendan Rodgers to Anfield. It wasn't to be, and the Icelandic International later explained that he chose Spurs because he was 'impressed with club's plans for the coming years'. On Friday, Sigurdsson reiterated once again that he made the the right choice to join Spurs, but did Liverpool really lose anything by missing out on the transfer?

Speaking to reporters, the £6.5m midfielder enthused about the 'many good players' at Spurs, and admitted that he's 'really pleased' to have made that choice. On the subject of Liverpool, he added:

"It was hard to turn down Liverpool because I know Brendan. It was more about that than any of the history Liverpool have. When Tottenham came in, I had seen how they were last year and in the previous two years.

"They finished fourth last year and were unlucky not to get Champions League football, and you could see that this is a great club with fantastic players."

The Tottenham situation is water under the bridge, and I'm sure Liverpool fans wish Sigurdsson well, but in my view, the Reds dodged a bullet by missing out on the Icelander. It may sound harsh, but his end product is a little underwhelming:

* Only 1 goal/4 assists in 24 Premier League apps.
* 4 goals/6 assists in 34 apps overall.

Not terrible, but not amazing either, and certainly not impressive enough for Reds fans to bemoan his loss. As a comparison, Philippe Coutinho has 1 goal and 2 assists in 3 league appearances for Liverpool, which is only two assists shy of Sigurdsson's entire league contribution for the season so far. Additionally, let's not forget that - unlike Coutinho - Sigurdsson has lots of Premier League experience.

Spurs may well be flying high at the moment, but I fully expect Liverpool to overtake them in the progress stakes next season, and when that happens, Sigurdsson may look back with regret at his decision to snub the Reds.

  1. Don't care about him, I was happy we didn't bring him in to be honest, but its still a blame we lost Dempsey to spurs, imo

  5. jaimie why are you so confident we will overtake them next season they will have champions leauge money next season i bet they out spend lfc in the summer

  6. You may not know that most of those 36 appearances seem to be 5 minute stints at the end of games. Maybe if you posted those stats as starts and goals/assists  it would give a clearer picture.

  8. Liverfool were a great team and your last results? well, you won a couple of weaker teams, now you will be able to measure how far you are from where you once were. Thfc are playing their best football in 40 years, i think it will be a close match because of Lfc support, but Liverfool are still weak and Spurs to take 3 points< remember football is a team game< Spurs have a great team, Liverfool have a few good players, Tottenham FC can beat any team on the planet right now. in AVB we trust

    ReplyDelete
  9. Ha ha ha dream on you deluded liverpool fans
You all seem to forget all the other great players spurs have.

You only have a couple who would get in the spurs team.

  10. For sure relief! Follow LFC's efforts to quality to any next season's European competition on http://www.footballwatch.net/team/37

  11. I'm not disputing you or anything Jaimie, but what makes you certain we will be better placed than tottenham next year? They've been on a roll in recent years...

    ReplyDelete
  12. I'm afraid unless you get taken over by arabs and become a plastic club like cheatski or city, then you wont be moving ahead of anyone. Times have changed since you ruled and there is very little to attract players to your club.

    ReplyDelete
  13. You can dispute me all you like, I don't mind :-)

Spurs are on a roll but that means nothing IMO. Example: * 2008-9: Liverpool finished 2nd, 35 points ahead of Spurs, on the back six straight years in the CL.
    * 2009-10: Spurs finished 4th, 7 points ahead of LFC *without* CL football/cash

LFC have definitely improved this season, and lack of CL football won't stop the Reds from closing the gap.

This season, LFC are good enough to be in the CL places, but inconsistency (due to integrating young players/new manager/new style of player/countless mistakes from senior players) has held the club back (and, admittedly, the odd crap performance, i.e. Stoke/West Brom)

Spurs are not a better team than LFC. Yes, they'll strengthen, but so will Rodgers.

Another thing to consider is the club's massively improved league form.

    * First 14 league games this season - LFC = 12th in the form table.

    * Second 14 league games: LFC = 4th in the form table

Since November, the club has show top four form, and that's *with* the dodgy results.

That's a drastic positive change during a season, and if the club can continue this into next season, top four - and overhauling Spurs - is a definite possibility.

    ReplyDelete
  14. They won't even need to outspend us to get better players.

    ReplyDelete
  15. arent spurs second in the form table?

    ReplyDelete
  16. ..............and then you take out your football manager disk

    ReplyDelete
  17. Suarez, Gerrard, Sturridge, Coutinho, Agger, Johnson, etc would walk into that team. Liverpool have scored more goals than both Spurs and City, the same number as Arsenal, we are also 2nd regarding clean sheets too. Gerrard has the most assists in the PL, you will see tomorrow live on TV!!!.

    ReplyDelete
  18. You will get a lesson in football, tune in.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Suarez, Coutinho and Sturridge disagree!!!

    ReplyDelete
  20. Have a look at Spurs run in, they have a lot to do still.......................don't get too cocky yet, mind the gap!!!

    ReplyDelete
  21. While I admit Spurs has hit a high tempo, largely due to the same set of players turning out on a weekly basis, they are still not in the mould of champions, I bet 1 massive defeat and it I'll take them forever to bounce back. Hopefully Liverpool's defence shows  up tomorrow and then we'll see, barring Bale bringing  his Oscar boots that is!

    ReplyDelete
  22. Firstly, can I say it's a pleasant change to have some mature Liverpool fan's views to read rather than a load of rabidly biased and spite filled Arsenal/West Ham tripe I usually see.

Gylfi to be honest has been a disappointment for most of the season and the majority of Spurs fans couldn't understand why we didn't bite Reading's hand off when they offered £10m in January. Now though we are starting to see the wisdom in keeping him as, with more playing time (denied to him before) his form has improved markedly. He is suited to our fast style of play and is looking like a very good signing all of a sudden.

Dempsey on the other hand? Someone here said they were sad to have missed out on him; well do you want him now? He's yours! He slows down our attack and while clearly a decent player with an eye for goal he doesn't suit our style.

As for overtaking Spurs next season, I understand club loyalty clouding your judgement but other than some questionable statistics there isn't really any evidence to suggest that will happen. The smart money is on Bale remaining at Spurs and with likely CL football and a manager Levy now has complete faith in you can expect us to invest heavily up front and probably in other areas also. Liverpool will improve also but with Mourinho quite possibly back at Chelsea, a lot of factors pointing towards Arsenal spending big in the summer, Man City doing the same and Man Utd and ourselves in the mix, CL may still be beyond Liverpool.

As for Sunday, I expect Liverpool to lead at half time and Spurs to win it in the second. In fact I have £20 on that result which will win me £340 if it happens. So come on Liverpool in the first half!

    ReplyDelete
  23. Such is our form at the moment the run in fills me with optimism as I see some of those as six pointers. Play Man City? Great, we can close the gap to two points. Play Chelsea? We can put more daylight between us and them. I honestly think we are the most dangerous team in the league at the moment on current form.

    ReplyDelete
  24. 1) Liverpool have scored more goals than Spurs
    2) Liverpool 2nd in clean sheets table
    3) Suarez lge top scorer 28
    4) Gerrard most assists in the lge
    5) Liverpool 4th in form table

Nothing questionable about that but we have work to do starting tomorrow, with a convincing win after a week resting!!!. Try keeping Suarez, Sturridge, Gerrard and Coutinho quiet???, best of luck with that!

    ReplyDelete
  25. isn't bale second in the form table * ?

    ReplyDelete
  26. fair answer. without bale, spurs are a much less threatening team.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Tune in and we will see?, good game no dout about it but you are playing Liverpool at the wrong time.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Unfortunately, we're also below all those teams at the moment.

    ReplyDelete
  29. That's why we must keep Suarez no matter what! He's indispensable - without him, we won't be enjoying this improvement!

    ReplyDelete
  30. I'm not really one for statistics as they are often misleading and can be manipulated to mean what you want.

If you insist though; Spurs are second in the form table, Bale is the most prolific scorer in Europe over the last ten league games with eleven goals, we are unbeaten in seventeen games leading back to 9th December and along with Man Utd we have scored more away points in the league than any other team.

Your stats are nice too though.

    ReplyDelete
  31. a team isn't just about scoring goals its also about stopping them going in. Its impossible to have a one man team, without a team Bale wouldn't have done nothing! YOu could say the same about Liverpool though without suarez you wouldn't be enjoying Europa league next year...

    ReplyDelete
  32. deluded bindippers, if only you spent as much time trying to get a job...pmsl

    ReplyDelete
  33. True. You are also in good form at the moment.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Neither were what Liverpool needed in the summer. Nor were Allen, Sahin or Borini though.

We needed more pace, skill and match-winning ability upfront/ out wide, and more size & power through the spine of the team.

We've belatedly picked up some of that in Sturridge and Coutinho now. And we desperately need more signings like that that fill clear gaps in the squad in the upcoming transfer window.

    ReplyDelete
  35. I agree with the premise of your argument that all this talk of slow long-term turnarounds is a nonsense, if not the specifics of how you'd go about it..

    ReplyDelete
  36. Spurs are a better team than us atm.
I do agree that there is no reason to believe that we can't be a better team than them next season though.

Assuming that we can keep hold of Suarez and strengthen in a couple of positions (e.g. have a goalkeeper that saves shots and a centre-back with more common sense than Skrtel) than people could be in for a shock in regards to LFC.

Even in this most dreadful of seasons we're not that far off the pace!

    ReplyDelete
  37. Tottenham didn't get taken over by Arabs. And you've overtaken us, a consistent CL side, in recent years...

Money attracts players to clubs, and LFC still has plenty of it to offer. Nevermind the fact that pretty much any Premiership club offers more than most European clubs will. Hence Newcastle, QPR et al being able to raid top European clubs to have players come to join relegation battles...

    ReplyDelete
  38. You'd better get mummy in to clean that mess up before daddy finds out!

    ReplyDelete
  39. We got knocked out of the FA Cup by Leeds and have had an eight game unbeaten run since. We have fantastic team spirit and can take a knock back.

    ReplyDelete
  40. You're sending out 7 home - grown players and bringing in 2. I don't think that would be the wisest thing to do with Home-grown rules in effect.

Personally I would keep hold of Hendo, Shelvey, Assaidi, possibly Downing and Borini. I only say Downing because of his age which could be a bit of a hinderence.

Coming in I would have, if possible, Williams, Eriksenand Honda from your list but also Angelo Ogbonna or Sakho, Alonso (I can dream) and try to buy Shawcross but I'm not too sure if he's signed an extension at Stoke recently.

Anoth option is to buy 2 CB and have Kelly or Wisdom there. Personally I think Kelly is the better choice but Wisdom is no slouch if you saw him play for the reserves last year.

  41. Have you been playing football manager all night?

    ReplyDelete
  42. That's unfortunate, indeed.

    ReplyDelete
  43. You keep saying Gerrard most assists, with games played he's actually fifth. The other stats are irrelevant. You may as well say you have the fastest bus.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Pathetic. Where are Liverpool without Suarez? That argument is childish.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Trophies Tottehnam Hot Spurs in the last  20 years =1 LEAGUE CUP
Liverpool Football Club Trophies in the last 20 Years= 2 LEAGUE CUPS  1 FA CUP 1 CHAMPIONS LEAGUE TITLE

I will keep saying it that even in recent times TOTTENHAM's RECORD is not to be compared with Liverpool's.

Please Tottenham fans, when you have won something then please start bragging.

Now to the matter Sigurdsson, transfer August 2012  24 PREMIER LEAGUE APPEARANCES .....GOALS FOR TOTTENHAM= 1

Sturridge transfers to Liverpool Jan 2013  5 PREMIER LEAGUE GOALS APPEARANCES ......GOALS FOR  LIVERPOOL= 5

    ReplyDelete
  46. Of course the problem with your argument is that we are not at any time in the last 20 years but now. Hey, it's lucky you aren't playing us in the 60's!

    ReplyDelete
  47. Typical Liverpool fan, always living in the past, when dinasours ruled the earth!

    ReplyDelete
  48. You have to give Spurs credit for how they've bought players in, dembele & vertonghen have added real steel alongside their flair. Spurs really bought into the idea of pace & athleticism before LFC, this for me is the difference. I really hope that we can to add to likes of sturridge, Coutinho & Saurez, if we can then we can take of overtaking Spurs!

    ReplyDelete
  49. Can I just say that if we finish third I would much rather see Liverpool finish fourth than Chelsea or Arsenal.

    ReplyDelete
  50. After approx 2 yrs,Jamie this has to be the most insightful, enjoyable article you have put forth.Cudos to the spurs posters.

    ReplyDelete
  51. Those two (Dembele & Vertonghen) and Lloris were the players I envied Spurs for signing. In contrast, I was pretty happy to see them snapping up the likes of Sigurddson & Dempsey, and Holtby more recently instead of us.

I was very surprised that AVB didn't pick up Sturridge though, as he was in charge when Sturridge was proving his worth last season...

    ReplyDelete
  52. Agreed about Dempsey, I wish he had signed for you instead of us. A month ago I would have agreed about Siggy but he is actually starting to look pretty good now he is getting a few games. Likewise Holtby I think will prove a good signing.

As for Sturridge, he is a decent player but I do not envy you him for £12m.

    ReplyDelete
  53. If we'd have brought in Dembele, Sturridge, Vertonghen & Lloris in the summer, instead of wasting so much time & money on Allen, Borini and Sahin (and trying to sign Dempsey & Sigurdsson), I'm confident that we'd be in the top 3 and looking upwards right now too.
It doesn't take masses time to turn a clubs fortunes around when it's so easy to just buy in players readymade. And it so clearly doesn't have to cost a fortune to do so either.

    ReplyDelete
  54.  Well a lot of people seem to be arguing that our success is all down to Bale, and he is about as far as 'bought ready made' as you can get.

    ReplyDelete
  55. way to many  outs and ins. Some may not be performing great, but you still need a squad, and you still need homegrown players.

    ReplyDelete
  56. 100% agree. The poor start did it for us, but we were settling in, since then we have been doing really well, and would be in fourth if it werent for that poor start. Now the team looks more settled, and BR`s transfers seem to be getting better, I fully expect his summer ones to work out ok, and for us to get into top four next season.

    ReplyDelete
  57. thats a fair point. Spurs and liverpool look about evens right now, should be a good game

    ReplyDelete
  58. I do agree that stats dont really count, as end of the day league position is king in this one. I think the reason you may find some of us mentioning stats, is that as this season was about change, we have looked into the stat side more to see how we are progressing, the result being, if it weren`t for the poor start where the team were trying to get there heads round this new style of play, we would be in 4th/3rd already. This is what is giving people the feeling that next season we can do it. Granted thats one of our oldest lines, always next season lol, but as the team is now settled, and understands the system, hopefully we will start normal. I don`t know if we will be above Spurs or not, but I do think we will at least be putting in a real challenge for fourth next season. Who else will make up that fourth spot I don`t know. I would guess Utd and City, with either one of Chelsea, Arsenal or you guys also in there and us. It will be hard, as like you have said, there is a lot of top teams trying to get that spot, but I feel we can at least challenge. FFP will have a big effect on the spending power of Chelsea, and Arsenal is anyones guess if they don`t hit fourth this season, how many stars will leave? Spurs look pretty solid, and seem to have the foundations right, so I would expect them to be up there.

    ReplyDelete
  59. robby it was good to read your comments but alas come back tomorrow night so we can take the piss ;-) i acctualy think the biggest factor will be your lot playing on thursday

    ReplyDelete
  60. Yeah let's agree Arsenal are screwed lol.

    ReplyDelete
  61. I can guarantee you if we get beaten tomorrow I will not be back here lol.

    ReplyDelete
  62. I think Johnson would (even more likely since he can comfortably play left or right back). Also, I think Sturridge would start for you. You'd play Bale left, Lennon right and Suarez behind Sturridge.

Lucas (when fit) is much better than Scott Parker too, but I suppose Gerrard is taking Parker's place as Dembele would start for a joint team.

Usually I'd put Agger ahead of Dawson/Gallas, but his form has been ropey of late.

    ReplyDelete
  63. You,ve missed out a lot of cups fella....won by liverpool that is.

    ReplyDelete
  64. To me tomorrow is not so much about the icelander or Dempsey but about the managers. I preffered Brendan to AVB but I think AVB's stock has risen while im not sure about Brendans, especially as Swansea are doing so well without him.

    ReplyDelete
  65. lol, It will be very interesting to see what does happen. I don`t want them getting fourth, because after all the hype of how great football they play, they now seem the most judgemental fans going in regards to everyone elses team, as if the fact there team plays good football means they are also experts on all football. The stick I got from some Arsenal fans when we didn`t get CL football, was loads, so it will be nice to see how they deal with it. Even when getting it, they normally lose there best player each season, and although they have money in the bank, will Wenger use it? will players want to come to them? They will be what we have been up against since losing our CL spot, and maybe then understand how hard it is getting back into that spot

    ReplyDelete
  66. but if spurs hadn't had a bad start they would be 1st.... proven if we didn't concede the late goals that we did at the start of the season then we would be 1st

    ReplyDelete
  67. its ok we will hunt you down on some spurs site lol

    ReplyDelete
  68. its ok we will track you down and leave you a post on a spurs site, like spurs offside lol ;-)

    ReplyDelete
  69. I think so too! My theory on what is missing in our midfield at the moment is the African/Euro African tough athletic midfielder with pace & skill ala Diame/Dembele/Cissoko etc. I really worry abt teams who have these powerhouses in the middle!
So many great teams have bought into this formula Real Madrid, Barca (Keita, Song, Toure), Chelski, not to mention top teams in Italy & Germany. Diame should be a must this summer with Allen making way!

    ReplyDelete
  70. Ok lets just take the last ten years you've won the league cup ..brilliant.
    What else ?
Tell you what scrap that what have you won in the last 3 years nothing. Yeah that's when dinosaurs ruled the earth.
We actually WIN THINGS  LIKE TROPHIES you don't it's that simple

    ReplyDelete
  71. Hoq I know but i want to give these Tottenham deludes a fighting chance.

    ReplyDelete
  72. Jaimie I agree with Arthur this is a good ARTICLE

    ReplyDelete
  73. well will all these great players why dont u ever win anythin??????

    ReplyDelete
  74.  so know doubt you will have had a big wedge on spurs to win ..seeing as we are that bad...no ...i didnt think so....we arent that great at the moment ...but ive got news for you kid....neither are you

    ReplyDelete
  75.  we only have a couple who would want to

    ReplyDelete
  79. well your used to them ...youve been having knock backs for 40 years

    ReplyDelete
  80.  are we second in the clean sheets table ....find that hard to believe

    ReplyDelete
  81. LOL ..whats a binddipper...

    ReplyDelete
  82. Lol.. in the words of one of Londons most famous TV characters...what a plonker lol

    ReplyDelete
  83. if im honest id have been happy to have avb  at anfield

    ReplyDelete
  84. Only way Bale would end up on the left would be to let Suarez into the team because Bale can play anywhere. Sturridge is no better than Defoe, if you're talking about 'when fit' then Sandro is in place of Parker and I don't rate Johnson over Walker. Don't know where Gerrard would start, maybe for Dembele but not a definite.

    ReplyDelete
  85. It's you're, not your. Grammar is the difference between knowing your shit and knowing you're shit.

    ReplyDelete
  86. There's no such thing as a delude, it's a verb. My point is unless you are going to take one of your trophies and beat half our squad to death with it they won't help you overcome us next season.

    ReplyDelete
  87. Basically, Sell 10 player bring in 7... Ermm Brendan Rodgers already thinks the side is tinny'bit short on players. Does not make sense to make it smaller than it already is.

    ReplyDelete
  88. Dembele is Belgian. Is all this African/Euro African malarky your politically correct way of saying you want a big black guy?

    ReplyDelete
  89. Pity you didn't nip in for Laudrup.

    ReplyDelete
  90. relax, I'm having a joke

    ReplyDelete
  91. Dembele- father from Mali, mother Belgian therefore Euro African or what do you think? You couldn't have put it better whether you think it's pc or not genetics don't lie, racial profiling in sport is not a new phenomenon.
Why do you think Chelski bought Lakaku? It's because they're after a new Drogba. Ask Carra if he enjoyed marking him, to my mind he's the only one to make him look like silly!
My two reasons for scouting African/Euro African talent is:
    1. Economics- value for money e.g Cissoko 2.5mill vs Allen 15mill I know who I'd rather have. Patrick Viera cost the gunners 3.5mill! Look at Diame etc etc

    2. Genetics- West Africans: Nigeria, Mali, Ghana-fast twitch muscle fibres designed for explosive power. The skill part is learnt, but if you've ever watched African football you'll know emphasis is on skill & technique which has improved past 10years.

Don't get me wrong not all African footballers are worth it Diouf, Diao to name a few but if due diligence is done properly there are some real diamonds in the rough out there!

    ReplyDelete
  92. I hate to admit it but you are probably right about 3-1.

3 dives to Bale, 1 dive to Suarez.  On the score though, who knows, depends which Liverpool team comes out to play.

    ReplyDelete
  93. How has the most cards for diving?  Bale or Suarez?  Pot looks slightly lass black!

    ReplyDelete
  94. Fucked if I know, do you? Slightly less black kettle is still black, methinks.

    ReplyDelete
  95. Yeah, I think it is about 5-3 to Bale.  But I totally agree, both kettles are most definitely black :)

    ReplyDelete
  96. I disagree. The key player to take out for them is Scott Parker. Take him out and they're finished.

    ReplyDelete
  97. In all fairness, we have to extend the same credit to Sturridge. The mere presence of Sturridge has taken team performances up a whole notch! With our January transfers, we now have a front 3 to emulate other fearsome threesomes such as Hamsik/Lavezzi/Cavani and Barnes/Beardsley/Aldridge.

Are there teams that boast more superior attackers? Of course! But you don't see Ba/Mata/Hazard or any 3 of City's attackers combining that well, or even Arsenal who have plenty of amazing forwards.

    ReplyDelete
  98. Sorry, but you have got the trophy count wrong. It is not 1 FA Cup, plus you forgot Our UEFA Cup.

    ReplyDelete
  99. Except me. For real.

Defoe is deffo dog shit though. One of the most over rated players in the Premiership, in my opinion.

I didn't think much of Sturridge before we bought him, but I think if you get a closer look at him (if he's properly fit tomorrow) you'll be (unpleasantly) surprised.

    ReplyDelete
  100. You're proof that Liverpool are still living in the past. The future is bright,  the future is Lillywhite!!

    ReplyDelete
  101. OK so it's the past you want to talk about rather than the current times and the future success of the mighty Spurs! Well, Tottenham's history is not about quantity, it's about having a unique quality unmatched by any other club. For instance, no other football club can claim as many FIRSTS
    as Tottenham Hotspur:

FIRST and only non league side to win the FA cup in 1901.
    FIRST
club to win the League & FA Cup Double in the 20th Century in 1961.

    FIRST
British team to win a major European Trophy in 1963 winning the European Cup

  112. Spending money does not necessarily mean it will be a successful campaign. Spending wisely, buying players who have hunger to play for the club is far better. Over the years Liverpool have out spend Spurs and actually many other clubs. What success did it bring to Liverpool? Not much, having a club who has a direction going forward both in transfers and in management is something money does not always buy.
