Luis Suarez admits: Leaving LFC for an 'elite' club would 'make me happy'. Insult...?

Last week, Luis Suarez claimed that he would stay at Anfield even if the club didn't qualify for the Champions League this season, which led to gullible Reds fans drooling over the Uruguayan's apparent loyalty to Liverpool. At the time, I was sceptical about Suarez's claims, and given the contradictory nature of his comments since then, it seems like he's not as loyal as some fans would like to think.

In an interview with the Daily Mail on the 1 February, Suarez said:

"If you want to know what will happen to me if we don't qualify for the Champions League, then I will say this: I have a contract with Liverpool and I am very happy here. I will stay"

A few days later, Suarez reiterated that he is 'happy' at Liverpool, but despite only signing a new 'long-term' contract six months ago, he told Radio Marca:

"We should talk this [a new contract] in June or the next one, in 2014. My contract ends in 2018. The only thing missing is to have more positive results so we can finish in a Champions League spot. We would like to qualify for the Champions League if possible"

Suarez then told Sport 890 that he would actually listen to offers if they came his way:

"I don't ever stop to read what is being said about me in the press - it would drive me mad as I'm linked to so many clubs. The day a concrete offer comes for me to the club, we will sit down and do what's best for everyone".

Then, this week, Suarez seemed to change his tune entirely and suggested that he would be 'happy' to leave for a different club. He told Mundo Deportivo:

"From here to the future you never know what will happen. The jump to an elite club would make me happy. Real Madrid and Barcelona always motivate you."

So, let's recap:

* Suarez is totally happy at Liverpool, and will stay at Anfield even if the club don't qualify for the Champions League.

* He signed a new contract - which runs until 2018 - only six months ago, but he thinks talks should take place this summer or the next on a new one.

* Despite wanting to stay at Liverpool, he is still willing to consider offers from other clubs.

* Suarez his happy at Anfield, but he's motivated by a move to Real Madrid or Barcelona, two 'elite' clubs.

I think Liverpool fans need to get their heads out of the sand. Suarez's alleged 'loyalty' is merely an illusion. He clearly has one eye on leaving the club, and his various comments prove that. Fans will remain in denial though, continue worshipping him like some kind of God, and act all surprised and shocked when the Uruguayan does a Fernando Torres and leaves sooner rather than later.

If Suarez is so happy at Liverpool, why is making public overtures to Real Madrid and Barcelona? Aside from the crass insult of saying that moving to one of those teams is a 'jump to an elite club' (is Liverpool not an elite club?!), he didn't need to say *publicly* that he's motivated by a move to La Liga, did he? Additionally, if Suarez's current contract runs for another FIVE YEARS, why would he need to discuss is in June this year or the next? The only possible reason would be to 'negotiate' yet another pay rise.

To be clear: Suarez is no different to most other footballers, and if he wants to leave then so be it. However, I personally feel it's bad form to go around proclaiming love for Liverpool, whilst simultaneously making a subtle play for a move to another club. Suarez is merely paying lip-service to the idea of being happy at Liverpool, but reading between the lines, it's obvious what he really wants.

If a player like Joe Allen or Stewart Downing suggested that they wanted to 'make the jump to an elite club', they'd be crucified and ostracised by fans, but this is Luis Suarez, so even thought he indirectly disses the club, fans will probably ignore it, and come up with ludicrous excuses/justifications/rationalisations to explain it away.

In my view, the club's fans need to wake up. Suarez is angling for a move, and in all probability, he will be gone this summer.

NB: For the sake of clarity (since so many people seem to misunderstand): I have no problem with Suarez leaving; in fact, regular readers will know that I support selling him. I raise these points to highlight the contradiction in his public statements. In one breath, Suarez claims that he'll stay, even if the club misses out on the Champions League; in the next, he basically makes a 'come and get me' plea to Real Madrid and Barcelona. It's basically lying to the fans, and for me, that's wrong. If Suarez privately wants to leave, then fine, that's his prerogative, but he shouldn't then be making grandiose statements about his apparent loyalty to Liverpool FC.

  1. Bow down to Suarez's wise words! He is the all seeing all doing best player ever to grace this planet.

  2. At least he trying to help LFC back to Champs League that effort should be praised.

  3. No surprise for me there to be found.

  4. i agree with you Jamie seems de javu with the torres incident if a huge offer comes in i see him leaving as much as id hate for him to go but we need to be realistic

  5. If Allen and Downing would say something like this people would be offering to pay their cab fair so don't worry about them. Furthermore, they have, so far, contributed very little to the club so of course people would mind less if they left. Of course Suarez is motivated by other big clubs, or so called elite clubs being interested in him. It shows him that he's doing the right things and enough to be noticed. Of course when a big offer comes in for him he'd have to sit down with the club. Even if he wouldn't want to go, it could be that the club would want to sell him. Gerrard did it, Xabi did it, Meireles did it, Mascherano did it, so why would you expect Suarez to dismiss everything out of hand? Ah yes, you have your hate Suarez agenda to take care of and it has been a week since you wrote some drivel based on far fetched conclusions, totally taking what he said out of context, about him.

  6. That is his job, is it not? Why does he deserve extra praise for doing the job for which he's paid £120k?

  7. The matter of the fact is that even if he leaves as you suggest, Liverpool have the knack for finding a top striker. Since the glory days of 80s, Liverpool have always had atleast one elite striker among their ranks: Fowler, Owen, Torres and now Mascherano. It just seems that the style of play at Liverpool makes it very easy for strikers to adapt.

I am pretty confident that if we sell Suarez at 40 million, and get proper replacement, we will be better off than we are with him presently with us.

  8. Jaimie, I wish you would take what is supposedly said to hackers and interviewers with a large pinch of salt. Hackers twist words to say what they want to hear and radio/TV interviews are edited to death.  Also bear in mind Suarez is the most gullible footballer ever to be interviewed (who else would talk themselves into a 9 match ban)?

  9. To be perfectly honest, i dont blame him or any other player, Suarez is top drawer, and we haven`t exactly shown much willingness to build a squad of world class players to match him, and challenge. Instead we choose to sign un-tested youngsters. We signed a un-tested manager, and have not shown any real desire to hit top four and above for three years. While I dont want him to go, I would not be bitter at all if either Suarez or Gerrard left, as personally I think we dont match there ambition as a club right now. This doesn`t mean I`m not happy with Rodgers, or the signing of young players, I am.

I said a while ago, that you cant always be building for the future, as it never comes. Players will then move on, once they hit there peak as your team will not be in the race. The club will become a feeding ground for one of the better clubs. Just look at Arsenal, a truly great club like ourselves, yet now they are pretty much a feeding ground for other top clubs. They sign them young, make them do well, then better teams like Man Utd, Barca etc will pounce and take the top players. That is what happens if you don`t sign players for today as well as for 2moz.

So it is a insult, yes, purely as any player talking about leaving a club when they have a contract is a insult, but do i blame him if he does leave, no way. If anything I think fairplay, maybe if a few more do, the owners would see there mistakes with there sign young for 2moz players policy

  10. I don't think anyone with a brain would think Suarez, who is probably in the top 5 players in the world, would stick to a Top 8 Premiership team. Course if clubs Barca or Real come knocking he will think about and I am sure the club will also think about a big offer. I am sure he said the same lark at Ajax at one stage....

    ReplyDelete
  11. Bill, with respect, why are you making lame excuses? There is no 'supposedly' about it. Suarez made these comments. Why should they be taken with a 'pinch of salt'?

    ReplyDelete
  12. Jaime, firstly all this news about him leaving Liverpool started since last summer, but on the pitch he still giving his 100%. I think that is more than enough, I like to think we could not be with him after last winter transfer window. Just enjoying his masterclass until this summer, and if after next transfer window he is still around, it is a bonus.

    ReplyDelete
  13. He's always been fairly honest about his desire to someday play for Barca. It is possible to love a club and still want to move. Lets face it we're not really an "elite" club anymore when was the last time we played in the CL? Suarez has been through a lot in England and rightly or wrongly the club and fans were all that supported him so I imagine he does show love for them. I would be happy if he stayed around long enough to get CL qualification.

    ReplyDelete
  14. can't fault him if he want to go,seeing FSG's stupid policy of  buying cheap players with  potential to build on for future. Truth is that future is not forthcoming --Arsenal--.  With that kind of a retrograde trasfer strategy we are no longer seen by players  as an Elite club. So what is wrong in saying it in public. If that opens owner's eyes and do some spending on players who are on their prime even if they are past their ridiculous age limit, then it's definitely good

    ReplyDelete
  15. I dunno, Torres really made me angry, not cause he left, but because for 4 months before he looked like he couldnt be bothered to break walking speed, so i felt just maybe if you had actually tried we wouldnt be so low in the league, and then would be in ur precious CL spot. That is what bugged me about him leaving. Suarez, like Alsono, are both still giving it there all, so to them i think fair enough.

    ReplyDelete
  16. A few months ago you stated that Suarez was "wasting his talent at Liverpool at the moment" and that he should move. Don't quite understand why you're slating him now

    ReplyDelete
  17. The point is that he's not being straight. In one breath he says that he wants to stay even if LFC don't qualify for the CL; in the next, he says he wants to move to an elite club.

I don't have a problem with Suarez wanting to leave, but he shouldn't try and fool fans into thinking that he actually wants to stay for years and years. That is blatantly not true.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Jamie, calm down. Are you trying to alienate Suarez while he is still at the club?  It's this type of attitude that could filter through to the terraces and swing a players mind one way or the other if he was on the fence (dont get a swelled head - I dont think you are that influential). Or are you just looking for a story.

Enjoy Suarez while he is at the club. As much as I want to see him stay there is no way he will stay unless Liverpool are a CL participating club. He may give it one more chance next season but I cant see his patience holding out after that.

We have to be realistic. Liverpool are not an elite club. I dont like it any more than you do but it is a fact. When I see him play I keep thinking how in the name of God are Liverpool going to hold on to this guy if he keeps up this standard of play.

If Suarez moves on this summer or the next Liverpool will get good money for him due to the length of his contract. If he stays then it means Liverpool are on the right track under BR.

    ReplyDelete
  19. He never said that. Try and brush up your Spanish Skill a little bit, or at least contact a native speaker to clarify that. He Actually said, that IF he ever left LFC,  it would be for ANOTHER elite club, like Madrid or Barcelona. That was only after a direct question from the interviewer, and slightly edited in the printed version.

Try and get the full audio, and translate it, because i dont have time to do it. Big difference.

    ReplyDelete
  20. First, I'm not 'slating' him. Second, I think it's fairly obvious why I've raised this issue. It's the fact he's leading fans on an merry dance: saying that he wants to stay even if the club misses out on the CL, then saying he actually wants to leave for an elite club.

I have no problem with him leaving; I have a problem with players basically lying to the fans about their intentions.

    ReplyDelete
  21. To be honest, if he does go so be it. No one is bigger than lfc. We idolized Torres but he came and went and the same can happen to suarez. The fans will just have to embrace him the time he is with the club and hopefully he will do well for us for whatever period. There is plenty talent out there, before he (suarez) came from ajax, not many recognized his talents so the more reason why fans will get over it soon or later and be optimistic something better than suarez will surface and dazzle the kop as always

    ReplyDelete
  22. oh my gosh leave the guy alone irregardless of if he leaves or not suarez will always be a legend in my eyes staying with our club through the darkest periods, resisting to leave after the evra nonsense, moyes dive and signing a new contract what more do u want from the guy to donate a kidney and a lung fed up of indiviiduals attacking luis

    ReplyDelete
  23. Well there are some player who take the pay but do not put that much effort in it. You can't deny Suarez love the club for now.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Is this any different to Rooney at Manu? he's still there, and so is Theo at Arsenal.

I'm a bit sceptical about a Uraguayan speaking to a Spanish paper translated to English being overly accurate, but in truth, how many players would really turn down Barca?

Suarez probably wouldn't, it's the best team in the world, though I don't know how he would react to not being the best player any more...

As long as he keeps his level up for us , then que sera sera. We need to ask more than £40m and stick to it though, and we need to line up a top notch replacement ahead of time if he does go. I am a Suarez fan, but nobody is bigger than LFC as a player.

As for Torres, he was pants for much of the two seasons before he left, and injured for the rest of that time. We saw less and less of the old Torres, and we got £50m for him.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Alienate Suarez, but surely from reading the British press you must know he is at fault for everything in this country, he is the reason the banks messed up, he is the reason for climate change, and apparently he was behind the great train robbery, way back when. There is literally no one more thuggish, and criminal minded in this country. He is the real axis of evil.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Jeez, the sheer number of people who misunderstand the point of some of things I post is mind-boggling.

    ReplyDelete
  27. I believe Suarez is at heart a very loyal and honourable man, but he is also fiercely competitive and a born winner, and he also knows just how good a player he truly is.

Which of us can honestly say- we were as driven as he is- that we would not want to have a few seasons at a club which was in genuine competition for domestic and European titles?

A top player's career is so short- they are at their peak for no more than a  decade at most, and he is 25 already- so he has maybe 5/6 top quality years left in which to realise his footballing dreams, and for the rest of his life he will have to live with what he achieved in these next five years.

Could you blame him for wondering what he could achieve in a team where most of the players had the same commitment, speed of thought, and flair as him? Imagine him getting his final balls and quick threaded passes from someone like Messi.

Saying that LFC is not an elite club is not an insult at all. Yes we were, and we want to be again, but as the seasons without CL footie go on, it actually cements out status as a club whose 'size' is based on historical achievements.

He came to LFC when we were not long out of the CL, and we were optimistic about getting back into it with new owners.
He's been through one false dawn with Kenny, and he must be wondering when LFC really will be back in contention even for the top four, let alone a title.

By the summer he'll have given us two and a half seasons and if we still don't look like getting a CL spot by then, I personally wouldn't blame him for looking elsewhere.
He's not a mercenary and if we were the LFC of 5 years ago I think he would be happy to stay forever, but he has dreams of his own, and in a commercial business, if your employer is simply not capable of fulfilling your joint dreams, surely you would be looking elsewhere.

I'll be gutted to lose the guy, but I also won't blame him.

    ReplyDelete
  28. The truth is we don't really care as long as he gives 100% for the club. Actions speak louder than words.

    ReplyDelete
  29. jamie,we all know you dont like luis, but he is the best player i have seen in a red shirt since billy liddel! if he is going to go,its got to be for at least £60m. i would rather keep him though.as for carragher...alehouse centrehalf .

    ReplyDelete
  30. I'm a Liverpool fan thinking of starting a ManU forum, pretending to be one of them, with the goal of causing trouble and division in the ranks. Any tips Jamie?

    ReplyDelete
  31. Yes, I know you don't care. You and others wouldn't care if Suarez stood outside Anfield and burnt an effigy fo Bill Shankly; as long as he's good player, right? It's attitudes like yours that are the reason football is in the gutter.

    ReplyDelete
  32. I think Jason Carr s negativity is beginning to get to wee Jamie !!

    ReplyDelete
  33. Indeed, it's not exactly shocking news that a genuine "World Class Player" would not entertain the prospect of a move if either of Real or Barca came in for them. Even Gerard if he was a few years younger would probably go given the recent series of disasters for our great club.

Pretty clear from all the media comments that his attitude is, he's happy at Liverpool becasue he likes the club and the suport that he has been getting, respects is team-mates and respects what the manager is trying to do. But like most players asked the hypothetcial question "if the two biggest clubs in the world made an approach", he would have to consider his position at that time.

He didn't even remotely indicate that he is sitting waiting for either of Real or Barca to come a calling, and hisn performances in the red shirt totally back that up. On the pitch he is an inspiration to those around him..

    ReplyDelete
  34. I gotta disagree about his attitude being the reason football is in the gutter, sure it may not be in the best place ever, but it is still so much better than in the 80`s, when fans would turn up in silly numbers, to hurl the most sickening abuse, throw bottles into the faces of other fans, smash and rip stuff up around the clubs, tear out seats and spit onto women and children if they dared turn up to the game. That was when football was in the gutter. Yes Hooligans still exist, but compared to the 80`s its so much less, and comments like the guy above made for me, dont put football into the gutter. they may not be my comments, but  def not the worst thing to have said.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Lets be honest, what player would turn real and barca down,
    ?

    ReplyDelete
  36. Yes, but you refer to a minority of match-going fans. The majority of fans across the globe don't go to games (for obvious reasons: location etc), and in the 80s - in my experience at least - fans were nowhere near as forgiving of cheating/disloyalty etc.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Well made point, im guessing at least he has been honest. I`m sure pretty much every player in the world would join either of them two if asked, just most would lie and say no, or most would never get asked.

    ReplyDelete
  38. I see. So you conveniently miss the point in favour of yet another rationalisation of Saint Suarez? So I guess it's okay to go around saying you love the club, you want to stay etc, but then say you'd actually like to leave for an 'elite' club? I understand now.

    ReplyDelete
  39.  Nah man relax nobody's in the gutter lol

    ReplyDelete
  40. maybe he is being more straight than most players ever would be. He has said what every player thinks, surely if barca or real came in for almost any player they would leave? all Suarez has done is be honest. From what he said it seems to me, he has said he is happy here, and likes it here, but if two of the biggest clubs in the world came for him he would have to look at it. Surely that goes for almost any player. Only different is Suarez aint hoodwinking us, and has openly said it.

    ReplyDelete
  41. i wouldnt hold it against suarez if , at the end of this season he went to barca or real for champs league footy , after all he's the 100% type of player who deserves to be playing in the big league every year,I would like him to stay for just one more season at least , because i genuinely believe next season we'll be in it for the season after , we could even get 4th this year if we put a decent run together , if we can win next 5 games then its on - the team , supporters too , will be confident

    ReplyDelete
  42. Just becasue you've written a columnn (and a poorly assembled one at that)  doesn't make you right, or give you the right to dismiss anyone else's opinion or make assumptions about their beliefs or standards...

And LTown is right, it doesn't matter a damn what you presume Suarez to have in mind for his future, what matters is what he actually does...

    ReplyDelete
  43. How is he being honest? Last week, he said he WILL stay if LFC don't qualify for the CL. This week, he says moving to Real/Barca would make him happy. If he's really loyal to LFC, why would he say that in public? Did he need to say that? Would the word end if he said nothing about Real/Barca?

Players say such things for a reason: to subtly indicate interest, knowing full well that their comments will be picked up and publicised across the globe.

That is not honest, it is engineering a summer move out of Anfield. And you praise him for that?

    ReplyDelete
  44. I don't really think that Suarez will take a blind bit of notice of what JK says.  JK seems naive enough to believe everything that he reads in the media  - despite a lot of what Suarez has said probably being misinterpreted in translation.  In truth, no one but Suarez knows what he intends to do - I would suggest we enjoy his performances for LFC while we can - and I hope that is for a good few seasons yet

    ReplyDelete
  45. no but in the 80`s football wasnt all rosey, thugs had brought it into the gutter. the fact they didnt like cheats, doesnt mean it was ok they smashed peoples heads in. Granted it was a minority like you said, but it might also be a miniority that think like the man above. Still less bad a way to think than a hooligan did in the 80`s.

For me, i just think its over the top, to acuse a fan of bring football into the gutter, for a small statement, clearly you think its fair, just one of them things i guess

    ReplyDelete
  46. how did i praise him? I called him disrecpectful, unless that is what you think is praise, but it aint jamie. just said he aint lying. maybe he is telling the truth, he will stay if we dont get CL, but would only leave if one of two clubs came in for him. All he has done is answered the questions in front of him. Would you prefer, he just didnt say what we all know every player would do. Lets be real honest, do you think there is a single player in our team who wouldnt leave if one of them two came in for them, other than maybe Gerrard??? now pretty much all players have said at a point that they like it here, so are we to say the whole team are lying? Same goes for every team in the prem really. I just think this whole argument about lying is misplaced, when the real point is, is it disprectful to the club, of which the answer is YES.

    ReplyDelete
  47. I get your point, but I'm just saying alot of player would leave a club for them clubs....

    ReplyDelete
  48. Whatever point you are trying to make Jaimie, you'd do well to remember...
'It's the duty of the messenger to ensure his point is understood, NOT the recipient'.

    ReplyDelete
  49. I'm not talking about what happened on the terraces; I'm talking about the overall mindset of football fans in general. Lots of fans have Ltown's attitude, and in my view, that collective apathy towards the negative aspects of football is a real problem.

    ReplyDelete
  50. find me a player in world, who arent tempted in joining RM or Barca. its just the fact that they are the dominant force in world of football. ofcourse Chelsea and City have the money, and PSG also. But they dont posses the glamour. It is a major career move to go to play for them. i just hope we are well compensated if it comes to pass

    ReplyDelete
  51. You don't need to use the word 'praise' to praise someone. Justifying/rationalising someone's behaviour is tantamount to praise. Suarez contradicting himself over his alleged loyalty to LFC is cause for concern IMO, but by suggesting he's being 'straight', whilst ignoring the glaring contradiction, you are indirectly praising him. That's just my perception though; you're perfectly entitled to your view.

    ReplyDelete
  52. Gah! Whether players are tempted to join Real/Barca is not the point! The issue is Suarez didn't need to say it in public, did he?! Especially after going on about how much he wants to stay at LFC only a few days earlier.

Why can't people see this? You're all so desperate to defend your deity that you can't see the wood for the trees. Suarez can privately wish to join any club he wants, but he shouldn't be going around saying it publicly when he has a contract till 2018, and he apparently wants to stay at LFC.

Why did he have to mentioned Real/Barca at all? Was there any need for that? NO.

    ReplyDelete
  53. Yes, and my point in this case is easily discernible. People refuse to see it though because they don't want to face the truth. They just want to continue sticking their heads in the sand and lionising Suarez. Don't get me wrong, I don't expect/want people to agree, but to wilfully twist/misunderstand the point just so they can defend Suarez, is ridiculous.

    ReplyDelete
  54. Im not justifying him, but I don`t think he has lied. Do I think he has been disrespectful? Yes massively. I hate any player talking about other clubs they would like to play for when playing for a different club, and for that I dis like him. I don`t though think he has lied. I guess it about what you see a lie to be, but for me, I am willing to have a go at him for things he has done wrong, like talk about joining another team when playing for us, but I am not willing to also have a go at him for something which i dont feel he has done, in this case lie.

What would I like to see done about it? Maybe remove him from the starting line up, or fine him for his words.

    ReplyDelete
  55. i would love him to stay i think he is absolute Class - on the footy pitch of course.  Stevie G is right, he deserves to be playing CL football, so if we do not make it, then sure, he should leave.  Torres is not the Torres we had at LFC so good riddance to him

    ReplyDelete
  56. How does that make it okay? This is a standard diversionary tactic known as 'Ad Populum Diversion', which is when someone dismisses something by reference to what another group/person is doing. It's not a credible argument.

    ReplyDelete
  57. Since you like films so much....Jack Nicholson has something he would like to say.....

    ReplyDelete
  58. But how can we really change what footballers think? Maybe Ltown is just being a realist, and knows most footballers dont play for a club for love these days, but for either money, or status, medals. Changing the reasons they play for a club, is one heck of a task, or which I aint got a clue how we do that, and I dont think what we fans feel, will be the reason for it to change. Therefore his apathy, doesn`t make much difference. The only way I can see you can change these things now, is by placing some rules into place about players, which would need to come from the F.A or higher.

it is only a guess, but I would guess most footballers dont really care what we think, as long as they get paid big bucks.

    ReplyDelete
  59. I don't think he should be punished for his comments. Far from it. I'm just highlighting the inconsistency, and also the hypocrisy. Once again, Suarez gets a pass because he's a good player. If it was Downing, Henderson or any LFC player not deemed to be a favourite, they'd be slaughtered for saying that they want to 'make the jump to an elite club'.

    ReplyDelete
  60. Jaimie, consider this please. It is entirely possible for Suarez to love Liverpool and want to stay, and to be interested in a Barca/Madrid move at the same time. They aren't mutually exclusive ideas. Human beings often experience conflicting emotions and ambitions. It's probable that Suarez would love nothing more than for Liverpool to have a great season next year, finish in the top four and kick on from there. In that case he could fulfill his professional ambitions at Anfield. On the other hand, if we don't improve, he may move on, albeit with a heavy heart and wishing things had worked out better at LFC. One things is for sure, if we don't qualify for the Champions league in the next season or so, it won't be down to Suarez who displays outstanding effort in every game. If he does have to move on to find a team that matches his world class ability, the fans will know he did everything he personally could to make it work at Liverpool, and he will leave with our best wishes.

I think you sometimes polarize opinion. It's right or it's wrong, he's 100% honest or he's 100% a liar. Life is made of shades of grey and Suarez, a world class foreign player at a great club with an average team, faces decisions any of us would find difficult.

  61. He's not leading anyone on anything but when people argue against that you delete that part of their comment and call it sniping.

    ReplyDelete
  62. Jaimie I think the Carra's of the world are a dying breed, loyalty is hard to find these days and I think if we were perfectly honest if any one of us received an offer from a top firm of Accountants, or a top Law Firm, or a top Bank ....(no wait I am sorry that last one is a typo ....not sure if there are any left) who would say "no thanks" I am happy to earn 50% less, I am happy not to be making a name for myself.....in football its clearly GREED but in the non football world we have made it more acceptable, more palatable by inventing a euphemism and we proudly call it "AMBITION". .......As the saying goes ....if you want loyalty go buy a dog.
There is however another explanation to his utterances, as he said he hopes for a new contract at Liverpool and his just letting the penny pinchers at the top know "I would like more money or I may be off", I would also be very interested to know how his salary compares to those of say Downing, Henderson, Enrique and Coates, based on what we have heard they were not only signed by the sock smokers for astronomical amounts but were also given massive weekly pay cheques....that being the case it must be a bitter pill for a number of players.
As for me I will be devastated to see him go but I will look back at the many hours of magical football he gave as and say "Thanks Suarez and good luck"

    ReplyDelete
  63. True they would, maybe though that is because us fans like to think players actually play for clubs for love, when actually they dont. therefore if the player is good, we make them false legends, when actually none really players for us for love, other than maybe one or two. Thing is, if we open our eyes and see that, football doesnt seem so fun, so it makes more sense to just  think they might want to play for the club for love. its just a lot nicer that way. No one really wants to admit there best player only plays cause he gets paid well. But that is probably the reality for most clubs.

    ReplyDelete
  64. "which led to gullible Reds fans"...and of course that is not sniping. That is objective journalism. Just admit it Jaimie, you have an issue with Suarez and you can't let go of it. It is clouding your judgement so much that you twist and turn every word he utters to fit your agenda. You take comments he's made in different interviews to different questions and you try to make it look like something it isn't because of the chip on your shoulder. I know you don't like to but at least admit to what is obvious for everyone else to see. You are extermely biased towads Suarez. The same way you accuse others of not being able to see fault, and you're right in that respect by the way, you are unable or unwilling to see any good in anything he does or says. Of course you won't argue against it when he has a good match. It's pretty hard to deny when the guy scores a hat trick. Yet you wouldn't say anything positive about him either. Personally I think it's a bit sad when you let someone you don't know, you've never seen and who has nothing in common with you other than Liverpool FC, become such a large part of your life. That's the last I will say about it because I'm starting to become as involved with your obsession with Suarez as you are. So no worries about any more "sniping" from someone who simply disagrees with you. I will choose to no longer read any of your articles involving Suarez and will simply ignore the parts of articles about issues that have nothing to do with him but you somehow feel the need to have a dig at him in.

  65. Actually Luis is helping LFC decision makers with these comments.  I have no doubt in his commitment or loyalty; even after the worst days of his in LFC (The Evra Saga) life & despite not playing in CL, he didn't leave in last 3 transfer windows.

He said that, regardless of CL football, he 'll stay next year at LFC & I trust him.  As I wrote somewhere earlier, I have a clear understanding of his mindset - he loves the club, the fans, the city & the League; but at 26 with his best 3/4 years coming; he wants to test himself at the global stages.  Imagine, had we been in CL & Luis performing there at the same level of BPL, surely he would have been among the short list for Ballon De Orr or World player of the year.

Luis 'll see what the owners do in next transfer window.  This is a very good developing LFC side, but at least 3/4 players short in starting XI still.  Depending on our June-Aug window shopping, he might leave even as early as next Aug & rightly so.  Unless the owners invest significantly for at least 4 world class
players who 'll improve the starting XI (A LB, a CB, a DM & a
winger); LFC 'll again show lots of promises, but 'll miss the cut by a
point or 2 & Luis knows this.

  66. I did think at first, it sounds like he wants more money, and was pushing for another new contract. The fact he said he would like to talk about his contract in the summer or next, made it look that way. I would be keen to find out what Sturridge was paid compared to Suarez, same for Coutinho. If they are on the same or higher, then I would see his point, if not, then the other players you mentioned were signed before he signed his new contract, so must have been happy with his wages compared to theres`s

  67. luis lives for headlines. he got a few more with this. simple as that. he is a bit of a media*hor*

    ReplyDelete
  69. I really don't think Suarez is 'gullible' etc. in any way. He has openly admitted to stop at nothing in order to come out ahead on the football pitch - cunning at the very least. Unfortunately, everybody looks at the phrase where he says he is just playing football like a kid, and thinks he is just naive.

    ReplyDelete
  70. Who wouldn't consider offers from Real or Barcelona ... especially if you don't play in the Champions League currently and may not even play in this competition in the near future and also not being able to challenge for the title ...

Suarez is here for now, so let's see what happens in summer ... that's the time to worry, not now !!

    ReplyDelete
  71. To twist a bunch of comments taken from seperates interviews with journalists with different agenda to suit your own personal viewpoint and attack Suarez is just as ridiculous.

The reality is we have a fantastic player which the best clubs in the world would love to have, hence you have the media mouthpiece of Real (Marca) and Barca (Mundo Deportivo) both angling standard interviews to insinuate that Suarez wants to be at their respective clubs right now.

And of course you then use these pointed articles to whip up a frenzy on here becaue your agenda is that Suarez who you clearly don't like want's away...

You can delete this comment as well if you like, I'll just keep reposting it..

  72. So if he thinks it, it's ok.

But if he says what he thinks, it's not ok?

I guess I see your point, but at the same time, I don't know if it makes much of a difference.

I don't even get the impression that people are defending LS for the sake of it because he's "[their] deity".

I think it's more along the lines of "what's the big deal".

If he said he wanted to go to ManU, or Man City, or Chelsea, then I think people would have more of an issue with it.

But I don't think we could really blame a player for being individually ambitious.  Sports have become a business for the teams and the players.  Generally speaking, fans don't want to admit that it's a business.

And to be clear, I'd prefer that he didn't say anything.  I've mentioned before that I'd prefer everyone on our team (from staff to players) say as little as possible.

But in this case, I can't say that I took much offense to it.

Like others have said here, sounds to me like he's angling for more money from LFC.

    ReplyDelete
  73. I guess being one of Uruguay's biggest stars of their most popular sport playing overseas for a historically big club means he talks to the media quite a bit but take a break will ya, Luis! ;)

    ReplyDelete
  74.  maybe its just a bit of confusion due to him not being at all fluent in english? i have no problem with him and i dont think he is looking to leave he has had opportunitys already and has quashed rumours asap. Hes playing well here, his family life is good here as he said and LFC have stuck with him through tough times particularly the evra racism allegations. Its just one comment he made about two big clubs that is all, no disrespect but i think your look far too much into this and trying to read between the lines when there isnt really anything between the lines if you know what i mean!

    ReplyDelete
  75. too bad that our financial structure doesnt allow us to keep players of his calibre. or we will have to break bank.  suarez will move on in year or two , i think. lets enjoy it while he is here.

    ReplyDelete
  76. Don't have any problem with this. He's said he will not actively look to move if we finish outside the top four, but if something came in from an 'elite club' he'd have to evaluate his options. He basically even defined elite club as Barcelona or Real Madrid. Don't see any contradictions there.

Lets not pretend we're on the same level as Barcelona or Real Madrid. It's this kind of delusional thinking that makes Liverpool fans look bad. We're a big club, but in terms of appealing to the best players in the world it's not even close. There's a big difference between Torres moving to our rivals and Suarez moving to Real or Barcelona.

    ReplyDelete
  77. I think we can give a push for 4th but it will be tough but who knows, i defonitly think theres hope. In my opinion he sounds like he loves the club enough to stay, for awhile at least and maybe see if next season we can get top 4? I think he meant the only possible way he would even consider leaving lfc is if 2 of the best teams in the world came looking for him and he would consider the move for cl football etc. but i bet my house he would prefer to play cl with lfc and would only move if thats not at all a possibility, and being honest and none bias i think if not for a poor start to the season we would be in and around 3rd and 4th. Next season defo will bring a seriously good chance of top 4, weve been better then city and arsenal away and been incredibly dissapointed with only a draw in both games. Just shows how far we have come and what the close future holds YNWA

  78. Our financial structure will change if/when we make Champions League.  That's what FSG is banking on because of the revenue increase that competition would bring.

It will also change if/when Anfield's renovations are complete as the additional ticket revenue will be coming in.

    ReplyDelete
  79. If/when we make Champions League, our financial structure will change to not only keep players like him, but to bring in players like him.

If/when the renovations to Anfield are complete, that would also make a difference to our financial structure.

Leave the poor man alone all he wants to do is play football  hes had opportunitys to go and has dismissed them immediatly and reiterated his plans to stay so stop looking for things which indicate he wants to leave

    ReplyDelete
  82. After mentioning he'd be tempted to move to an elite club it became necessary to define who exactly he considers elite.  If those defending him 'can't see the wood for the trees' then you surely must concede your own blinkered view regarding Suarez.

It's naive to suggest that a player cannot be happy at a club whilst simultaneously having a desire to play for one of he best teams in the world. Choosing to express that desire does not mean he is disloyal or actively seeking a transfer. Suarez just gave an honest answer to a question he was asked.

  89. You mean "reported as saying" in papers that are the media moutpieces of clubs that are most likely to want him. This is the way they (Real & Barca) engineeer moves, they want him (not immediately but down the road and at a bargain price) so turn fairly inoccuous interviews into something else in the articles trying to drive a wedge between the player and his club and supporters.

His agent has more than lkely told Luis to take the interviews becasue the hint of interest from Real & Barca is good for contract negotiations at the very least. Doesn't mean to say that he is looking for a move next season or the season after, and as long as his form is unaffected then he is justfying his salary and meeting his commitments to the club and supporters....

  90. No one's bigger than the club. If he shows any sign of defect, Suarez or no Suarez, let him go. I do realise this a critical site so you need any kind of crumb to twist and make. Mountain out of a ..............
I guess this will be edited/deleted and banned.

If you want it to be critical views/opinions on LFC, then you should be man enough to have constructive criticism of yourself, as long it's not name calling

    ReplyDelete
  95. Let's not doubt LS's loyalty to LFC at this point of time. Of course we have to understand if Barcelona comes in for him, it will be hard for him to reject. But that's not a problem at all, as long they pay enough to get him. Torres was sold for the price of 15 mil pounds + AC (catastrophically a huge loss for LFC), despite not being in his prime form, so we can assume if anyone comes in for LS, they will have to pay 50-70 mil pounds, rock hard cash!

    ReplyDelete
  96. On the pitch he is 100% LFC, to me that's what matters. If he went to Real or Barca it would [at the moment] be a step up. So i would have no complaints about that.

As far as players in general [not just Suarez], they should be able to say what they want. Sports personalities have a noose round their necks either by sponsors, fans or governing bodies.

These are professionals talking about what they think is their career progression. If some in the business world talked about what their future career plans are no one would bat an eyelid!

Whether they mean it or not is irrelevant anyway. They represent the club with their public comments.

    ReplyDelete
  104.  if a footballer comes out with a clever statement chances are hes been coached to say it by an agent or Pr guy....and your right when it comes to club loyalty you cant take them to task because for the most part there in it for themselves...if suarez or sturridge or whoever leaves whooppee ..it is what it is you just get someone else in

  108. Suarez is almost at his peak now at 25. He is performing his job exceptionally well. There could be a couple of reasons for his contradictory remarks.

    1. I am sure his interview was in Spanish. please send the link for both.
I do not trust media interpertations.
    2. Suarez was convinced to stay and sign a new contract and stay for  at least another year. FSG would have promised top signings. It was a lie.
    3. RVP earns double of what Suarez earns. What's wrong with him making the same or more?
    4. What is wrong in aiming to play for the best clubs .

In two years time we could be still struggling to qualify for Champions league berth.

    What happens of Suarez then.?

its an insult to fans that pay good money to go watch him and he plays hard for them, then your now implying hes a money grabber.
he stayed because of the support he got from proper fans. and you and the little minority stand for nothing.
go to a game or speak to fans that go to games and they have nothing but praise for him.............and thats a fact.

    ReplyDelete
  111. I'm not exactly sure what you're complaining about.  I didn't criticize him.  If anything, I was defending him because Jaimie was taking exception with what he said, and with the people who were defending him.
Players are businessmen. I stand for nothing because I recognize that?  That's just the world we live in.  He's not playing for free.We have Jaimie claiming that people defend the guy at all costs because they worship him.And then we have you claiming that there's another minority that don't support him because we think that he wants more money. You do understand that he stayed AND signed a contract extension (for a lot more money than he was making)? Again, players don't play for free. And now he's having a magnificent year.  Do you expect him to stay pat and not try to get more money?  Playing careers have a shelf life, and they can end at any moment due to a myriad of circumstances, notably from injury. That goes for every player, not just Luis.  I don't have any issue with that. Furthermore, I made it clear that I DID NOT take any offense to what he said.

  114. I think your guilty of tabloid creationism here. So what if he has said he could go to real madrid or barcelona. At the moment they are the elite clubs - no doubt whatsoever.

We may have been an elite club but my friend our own leadership and ownership have downgraded our expectations so far that today if we even get a top 6 position we would be happy. Not so long ago it was we would only be satisfied with the no.1 - so yes elite clubs dont think top 6. Elite clubs dont go for simply potential but buy proven players to maintain their quest for trophy's.

We have short memories remember how even Gerrard thought of leaving for Chelsea - and to be fair i would never have blamed him.

These guys only have one chance and if they cant look back at achievements in their cabinets then for some its not a career fullfilled. Suares deserves to play at the highest level. His committment to the cause over both season has been phenomenol - I have never seen a player try so much. Yes he is paid handsomly but my friend so are many others - no names mentioned.

And lets get one thing right - loyalty is a 2 way street - do you really think FSG would reject an offer of 50 million? I very much doubt it. It was the same with Torres - the club could simply have tried a lot harder to keep him especially until the end of the season - and perhaps if he had blossomed with Suarez we would have had a legendary partnership. But no 50 million was to good to refuse.

    ReplyDelete
  115. Suarez is our best player and is quite unique, so losing him would be a big blow.

Barca are certainly "elite" and are currently at a far higher level than Liverpool. We are not even at an "elite" level domestically, but hopefully he will get us back to that level before he leaves.

But it is strange that there is mention of a new contract this summer or next at Liverpool for Suarez, having just signed a new deal. No doubt we will probably give him another increase if it means we can keep him for another year, then sell him at 27/28. Seems to be our stated strategy :(

Anybody who thinks that a Uruguayan, who moved to Europe at quite a young age, has an undying love and commitment to Liverpool is being naiive.

Yes he must love the support etc, but to play at Camp Nou!!!! With Messi, Iniesta etc. Wow! Who wouldn't want to???

Bayern or Barca will get him next..... Hopefully in 2015

    ReplyDelete
  116. Not sure I'm really bothered at all by what he's said. I don't hero worship the guy, I like the football he plays and I'm glad he's here, for now. If he moves on then we'll get a massive fee and that's what a long term contract is really all about. I'm not going to get upset by the (possible) interference that Liverpool is not an elite club, I think it's a true reflection of where we are at the moment. The only way we are in the same bracket as Barcelona or Real Madrid is our history, certainly not our current or recent form. Anyway I think it takes an over-reactive point of view to make that inference. Simply by saying that Real and Barca are elite clubs isn't a comment on Liverpool. He's saying they are great clubs, that's absolutely accurate. Any footballer who would turn down either of those clubs simply out-of-hand would be a bit daft, I don't think you'd find too many current professionals who would. It's only die-hard club stalwarts like Stevie G who dedicate their careers to one institution and for a while there even he has occasional doubts and thoughts about moving on. Players may choose to ultimately not take up a chance to play at those two clubs but there is no question they would think about it if the chance came up. They'd think about it very very seriously and Suarez is no different to anyone else.
The contract re-negotiation thing is a total storm in a tea-cup. I'd assume that almost every high profile player in modern football would at least have a conversation about their future and their contract once a year. That's what I do at my job, why should they be different? If I have a stand-out year as an employee I'm not going to just be quiet and happy with the fact that I got a pay rise 12 months earlier. This is not just how football works, it's how life works. The idea that players sign a contract and then put their whole heart and soul into a club without ever thinking about their own careers is a fantasy, a romantic idealisation of players. No one is like this, not Suarez, not anyone.
I wonder who JK thinks are these people who idolise Suarez and believe he's some kind of LFC adoring God who loves us all as his children and would never do anything for himself that we wouldn't agree with. I suppose there might be people out there, but it's a real straw-man attack argument. If people really feel that Suarez is anyone other than a normal flawed human being with his own ambitions who just happens to like playing at our football club then they're clearly delusion. It seems a bit pointless to call them out and chastise them. It's an odd and contrary position to hold and honestly it seems like JK is making up imaginary people so that he has someone to direct his discontent at.

    ReplyDelete
  117. JK, the only person he really seems to bother is you. The only damage he's doing is that he's annoying you. Why on earth should we all clamour to agree with you when it's quite obvious to a large number of people that his comments are entirely harmless? They are obviously an issue for you but that's your own personal point of view, it's got nothing to do with the club. Quite simply you've written this article because you don't like what he's said, but so what? Since when did your approval become the benchmark for what's acceptable?

You need to get off your high horse and realise that what you think is a problem is not always a problem in reality. The idea that Luis Suarez says it would be a nice thing for him to play for Barcelona or Real is just about the most benign and unimportant statement I've heard all year. What goes on inside your head that you come to the conclusion that he should not be saying these things? It's nothing except your own personal expectations. In the real world no one gives a damn, and rightly so. Grown adults are not so attached to some absurd standard of romantic idealism that they refuse to allow football players to speak their mind and say simple, honest things that make total sense and do not truly offend anyone.

  119. Bill, Jamie has his own agenda in writing this article. To be fair to him he is open in his dislike for the player and will promote negative articles about him. He will never say anything positive about him whilst trying to turn fans against him which is what this article is all about. You don't have to be a genius to work out that a Spanish speaking lad would be interested in moving to two of the most iconic teams in world football. That doesn't make him bad or disloyal just honest.

  121. Sadly mate this wont happen. JK doesn't like Suarez and so will write negative articles about him. The sad thing is he tries to wrap this one up as doing the fans a favour by 'enlightening' us to Suarez evil ways!!

  122. Mcmanaman and Owen both left for one of those elite clubs. At least it looks like Suarez will get us a good fee. He talks about what is best for everyone. Btw as a south American it is perfectly alright to say what Suarez said to Evra. It would be as patronizing not racist. Bearing in minds latest ban I feel sorry fro Suarez and Daglish because of he was right to support him and gets plenty of criticism.

  123. The reason I mention is it is because someone referred to Suarez as gullible earlier in this thread. Not true. Just a bit too honest.

  124. Saurez's temperament with journalists is as sceptical as his temperament on the pitch.  He follows the LFC 'official line' but also within days the official 'Suarez line'.

The truth lies in the official 'Suarez line'.  By the time he leaves Im hoping Coutinho would have already filled his boots.

  125. Don't believe a word of any of it!......if Suarez mentioned any of this it would be everywhere .....sky sports would be running with the headlines Suarez wants to leave....on the hour every hour...sorry pal, don't believe any of these shitty sites.....also don't insult fellow reds fans who might happen to disagree with you please....

  127. Exactly my thoughts.

However, I feel Luis don't want to keep next year as a "Chance".  The squad we have is good enough for a fight, but we don't have the squad for 38 matches (specially if we qualify for Europa again).  Current squad 'll play very good games, but in between 'll have results like Aston Villa.  My point was, instead of buying squad players, if we can go for 3/4 payers for starting lineup (not depleting the squad); Luis 'll stay to give his best fight.

I am sure, if we can add say Baines, Shakho, Ericksen & Ben Arfa with this squad (& a quality GK if Pepe leaves, Willams if Skartel leaves); we 'll definitely qualify for CL & actually 'll fight for top 2 positions.
