Liverpool defender Sebastian Coates reportedly wants to leave Anfield during the January transfer window.
Since signing for the club last Summer, Coates has struggled to establish himself in the first team, and with the Daniel Agger/Martin Skrtel partnership firmly entrenched at Anfield, the Uruguayan's first-team chances look slim for the foreseeable future.
According to a report in The Daily Express, the 21-year old is tired of sitting on the sidelines. The report states:
"Coates has made just 20 appearances in 18-months at Anfield and wants to leave in search of regular first team football.
"Harry Redknapp has been rebuffed in a loan bid".
A loan move to QPR would seem to make sense, and it would give the youngster much-needed Premier League experience. However, after the Andy Carroll situation, I doubt the club will let Coates leave until a replacement is found.
A report on Friday in Brazilian newspaper Folha de S.Paulo suggested a move back to South America could be on the cards fo Coates:
"Santos are also targeting another player, Uruguayan Sebastian Coates of Liverpool, who is also coveted by São Paulo. Coates' father recently dined with members of the Santos hierarchy, who expressed an interest in bringing the player back to South America in January".
Recent reports in Italy, Portugal and the UK also claim that Coates' future at Liverpool is far from secure, and last week, the Daily Mail stated:
"Liverpool are in the market for a centre back with concerns over the future of Sebastian Coates. The Uruguay defender is attracting interest from Italian clubs. Juventus are among them as they look to replace 34-year-old Lucio".
Liverpool legend Mark Lawrenson believes that Coates could be on his way out of Anfield. He told the Liverpool Daily Post yesterday:
"I’m not sure Rodgers fancies Sebastian Coates, and if that’s the case then perhaps it would be better to get the centre-back off the wage bill and bring somebody else in".

3-5-2 with coates srktel agger johno jose lucas gerrard allen suarez sturridge BR should give him a chance and stop playing Carragher
ReplyDeleteI believe in Kelly, but he had too many injuries for his age, and haven't played first team cb, maybe we need another if we do sell Coates... I would stick Coates between agger and Skrtel for a few games in a 3-5-2 to see what happens- can we count on him, Mansfield and Norwich seemed perfect for that but FA tie looks to be postponed...
ReplyDeleteI can't see why you would get rid of Coates, he looks good when he plays. If only he played Coates for the Stoke game, it might have been a different outcome. We seem to be light weight and to lose our big tall defender feels like a mistake. Saying that, any story taken from the mail needs a certain amount of salt added to it
ReplyDeleteDid he quote "Ï want out"?
ReplyDeleteTime to sell IMO. Decent player, but far too slow on the turn when you play a high defensive line. Won't be ousting Skrtel and Agger anytime soon.
ReplyDeletemore lies, would be very foolish to get rid of him before he has had a decent run in the team. Anyway Suarez would have to be consulted first before they could even concider it!
ReplyDeleteRodgers please stop playing Carragher!!For f*ck's sake he is 36 years old,too slow, too average.he's been a great servant and a true legend but he's so past it now, even Chamack and Heskey can outpace him.well done to him for reaching that many appearances but i'm fed up with this situation.we're not a pay-tribute football club,if we were put in the starting lineup Fowler-Rush-Aldridge-Barnes.....!!Coates is a MUCH MUCH better player than the old and slow Carra and he is just 22 years old, heck i was so happy when we signed him and having seen him he can become great.but Rodgers is playing Carragher again and again so that Carragher reaches his milestone appearances???fuck this,i'm so angry watching Carragher playing ahead of this young and talented lad, this situation is so stupid.
ReplyDeleteNo way! Better FSG and BR to quit, enough to be selling our most valuable assets!
ReplyDeleteIs that line in quotation marks? No. It's called paraphrasing based on inference. If it was a direct quote, it would be in quotation marks.
ReplyDeletePS. Stop sniping. I will delete that comment in 5 minutes as it's totally irrelevant to the discussion, and is just your usual sniping.
ReplyDeleteI hardly think that we need a replacement as he never gets picked anyway so he might as well go on loan to 'arry or leave for pastures new.
ReplyDeleteThere seems little point in having him on the books in those circumstances. Mind you I rate this guy as someone who is developing talent and this could only be quickened by a good loan period but then I am not manager..
looks like mertasacker from gunners. i don't know on him yet same, kelly, wisdom are all natural center backs.
ReplyDeleteWhat if our main defenders get injured?
ReplyDeleteDeleted my last post. Great.
ReplyDeleteLet Coates grind down his scale...let loan out to BPL team.Good idea if he can join QPR.He will need to do hard word and we will see how biggest potential that he have it.BUT PLEASE DO NOT SELL HIM BECAUSE FROM MY EYES HE IS HAVING HIGH POTENTIAL TO SHINING.Sometimes i would like to see this versatile player can playing for midfield position.CDM AS HOLDING BALL VERY GOOD FOR HIM.He is cool and tough.Sometimes he can able score the goal and making assist for goal. The big lost if Liverpool FC release this big talent player.
ReplyDeleteIt's a pity his move here didn't work out so far. I like the lad. I'd rather see him loaned out, but all we can do is trust the coaching staff in their assessment as they see him at work every day. If we brought in Isimat, though, we probably wouldn't be worse of, as he is a great talent, too.
ReplyDeleteYes, because you were sniping. Is the line in question in quotation marks? No, therefore it's not a direct quote, is it? It's called paraphrasing. Your post was just nitpicking for the hell of it, and had nothing to do with the article.
ReplyDeleteRight now I wouldn't change the system again.
ReplyDeleteWhile I think that your back three are a good idea in general, I don't think we should switch our system now. Our players are just starting to click in the 4-3-3 so let's not confuse them.
ReplyDeleteThat certain amount of salt is at least a small hill when it comes to the Mail.
ReplyDeleteI know we don't get to see how the players play day in day out in training and the Rodgers is bringing some of the youth player through, but to sell Coates on after so few chances and for what we payed is ridiculas. The boy has looked good almost every time he has been given the chance, same goes for Assiadi and Pacheco both of them have looked excellent at times when given a game, Pacheco especially in pre season. It's mind boggling how some of the talent we've had at the club has been so mid managed. And look at some of the prospects we've let go who are now showing they're skills at other clubs, Ince and Kacaniclic ( terrible spelling i know) are both excelling after having left Liverpool and I for one would have loved to have seen how they faired in our first team rather than spanking money on Downing and Hendo especially with Henderson being played out on he right wing last season bizarre. Anyway rant over, oh and I wasn't having a pop at Downing or Hendo just pointing out that we already had young talent at the club in the positions these two players were played in last season.
ReplyDeleteI, too, can't comprehend the logic behind still playing Carra.
ReplyDeleteMismanaged*
ReplyDeleteReports recently claimed that Kelly refused to sign a contract extension. Don't know what they've offered him, but find it a bit odd that a player who's been injured half his footballing career wouldn't sign an extension at his boyhood club.
ReplyDeleteplus he has never really been the type to act out, unless he just feels he could get more game time else where, when he aint injuired that is
ReplyDeleteI agree with many people here on a few different options!
ReplyDelete1. Stop playing Carragher and let Coates play!
2. Loan him out!
3. Sell!!!
He can't keep watching! It's killing his career very very quickly and no one deserves that!
I still think he can make it, he needs to adapt more, but clearly he has somthing, as he has been in his national team at all levels, captain too. I never see the point in loaning players to teams in other leagues, unless it is too sell them after, i fail to see how it gains them a good foundation for playing here. Why not loan him to a Championship team, get him some games under his belt for a season? He is young, and defenders take more time than strikers to come into there own.
ReplyDeleteCoates has always looked dangerous when attacking corners and free kicks has also been useful when we have needed to defend them.
ReplyDeleteWith Carra very likely to retire at the end of the season it would seem foolish to let him go in January without giving him a proper chance to show what he can do.
If we can arrange it, loaning to him another prem club, where he is very lkely to play often (with a recall option should Agger or Skrtl get a long term injury - not sure about the rules on this) would give him:
a) a change to play rather than warm the bench
b) the chance to be evaluated in the prem with little threat to us
c) raise his profile so i we do sell in the summer we will hopefully be ble ask for a higher transfer fee.
he doesn't play carragher u gimp????
ReplyDeleteWhy rebuff a loan bid from QPR, who are in the same division as us.
ReplyDeletethe bottom line is the epl league is high tempo and all about pace. coates has no pace. its alright if teams are just lumping balls in the box for him to head away buts thats not the case. he gets caught 40 yards from goal and turned he has no recovery cos of no pace. ive seen milk turn quicker. sell him asap and aleast recoup the 6 million we waisted on him
ReplyDeletemite have something to do with not even making the bench
ReplyDeleteWhich might have something to do with him being injured since September until March or so. I would seriously doubt the sanity of our manager, or any manager, if he'd put an injured player on the bench. Before he got injured Kelly has featured in seven matches, if the stats in front of me are correct (six starts, too).
ReplyDeleteI do not think Sebestian Coates is enjoying his Liverpool experience as much as his country man Luis Suarez. I personally don't think that the manager really fancies him. He is not used as much even as a subsititute that honors belongs to Jaime Carragher. I think that if he wants out he should be allowed to leave the club so that he can optain first team football somewhere else. I believe we can do better in this position we just have to look around a little.
ReplyDeleteI don`t know why Anteater! Like I said, to me, loaning out can be a good thing. He needs game time to adjust, and right now I don`t think he is ready to step into our first team, but I do think he can be great in a few years. Worth keeping hold of at least, unless he is home sick, which if that is the case, there isn`t much we can do.
ReplyDeleteKenny prefered Carra over him and now Rodgers does the same. There might be someting to him that we wouldn't realise from the few minutes we have seen of him on the pitch.
ReplyDeleteIt's a disgrace that BR has played Carra ahead of Coates.
ReplyDeleteAll so that Carra can rack up his appearances!
How does this benefit the team?
Coates is a quality player and has a great future wherever he ends up. I hope it's with us!
The guy cant make a tackle without committing a foul .....for all his height he isn't that good in the air.....i think fans view him through rose tinted glasses for some reason if we are not gonna play him get shut ,,,we haven't the cover to loan him out....get the coin in and buy someone else
ReplyDeletehow can you say hes a quality player...he hasn't played enough games to show it
ReplyDeletewe have no cover its as simple as that....
ReplyDeleteCarra is hardly playing.....what are you all on about
ReplyDeleteThis guy isnt a midfielder end of.......the game would pass him by
ReplyDeleteI concur ...the players haven't got to grips with 433 yet ..to start changing would be an admission that the system doesn't work...rogers has gone half a season so he may as well run with the ball
ReplyDeleteWell, the article we comment about concerns Coates leaving. Wouldn't make any sense at all then.
ReplyDeletepersonally i wouldnt let him leave....but i would sooner sell him and get someone else in than loan him out
ReplyDeleteParaphrasing doesn't mean you can put Daily Mail words in Coates mouth. He never said I want out.
ReplyDeleteno cover
ReplyDeleteHow is that a disgrace???!
ReplyDeleteDid you even watch the games when Carra played! He's been outstanding so far and therefore deserves to be playing (even if its just for a few minutes). If Coates wants to play more, he needs to improve and show Rodgers that he's the better option than Carra, simple as that...
Brendan Rodgers another sign of woeful player management . A Good manger keeps a squad happy not just the first team . Brendan has no idea how to do it . Coates is an excellent player . Brendan needs to keep him happy by giving him more game time . Great managers build a squad and keep good players .
ReplyDeleteRodgers is just good for Liverpool's opposition . They will love him. Telling Carrol staright off the bat , he is not wanted . Does Brendan even know that Carrol is quite good with the ball at his feet . Farms Carrol out buys Borini . Ignores a good player like Coates and gives Carragher more game time . Carragher I am afraid is past him . He gets beaten easily and ends up fouling the player. Brendan needs to be farmed out before he does more harm.
bottom line is, lets be honest, our defence is hit or miss and very inconsistent, its sh#t compared to even stokes for example.
ReplyDeleteim a fan of coates and think he deserves as much of a chance at starting than agger or sktrel who have been poor overall.
stoke again, id take there centre backs over ours all day. were Liverpool not stoke!!!
Liverpool lost there spine when carra lost form to no fault of his own, we never replaced hypia, which in all fairness is very hard and not cheap due to him being so good at both ends of the pitch, just an awesome defender, used to keep drogba in his pocket for fun.
I WANT YOU OUT OF WRITING ENDLESS DRIVEL KAN WAR, YOU AND YOUR BAND OF IDIOTS. LIKE CLUESS CARR
ReplyDeleteBecause coming from the same country automatically makes players best friends?
ReplyDeleteJust like Ba and Cisse I guess...
to get him in the record books. Playing the guy for 10 minutes in games that we've already won isn't hurting anybody and is just showing respect to what the guy has achieved for LFC over the years.
ReplyDeleteCarragher is clearly past his best, but it's not that difficult to understand why Rodgers keeps giving him cameo appearances towards the end of games...
That description sounds like Skrtel...
ReplyDeleteFor the future, that 10 minutes would have been better for the club and Coates.
ReplyDeleteAs cover there is always going to be a stage in the season when either Agger or Skirtel needs a rest - remember there is still the europa, FA cup to get over. So it doesnt really make sense to get rid off. The notion that we sell a player to reduce the wage bill is rubbish - because were going to have spend money on a replacement and then pay his wages for him to sit on the bench. We cant really judge Coates because he hasnt played that much but to compare every one to the WWF wrestlers at Stoke is a bit unfair - because if every time an attacker came into my penalty box and i walloped him one then i would be a good defener too!
ReplyDeleteAre you joking? I am a fan of hypia, a club legend, but the one striker he did not have in his pocket was drogba who always seemed to score against us having turned hypia.
ReplyDeleteI always felt we should have signed Gary Cahill at the same time as Coates and loaned Coates to Bolton as part of deal, thereby getting a ready made CB at the same time as bedding Coates into the premiership. Surely Bolton would have gone for it and we would get at lead one and possibly two decent centre backs depending on how Coates adapted. As it is now, although I share concerns on his ability to turn quickly, this is not unlike other quality premiership centre backs - including most of those at Stoke - so we still do not know whether he is able to make the grade.
In the circs, best bet is to loan him out with option of recall - if that is allowed?
if a player wants out, let them go.
ReplyDeleteCoates does make mistakes but he is young, does not get a regular run out and his 'senior' partners during appearances are themselves prone to individual errors. Many of our players simply get played on reputation, not form. I like Coates but don't think BR fancies him at all - maybe because he is not as mobile as Agger. But Hyypia was never fast and more than made up for it with his reading of the game - and I believe Coates can be that kind of player. Playing Carra ahead of him in cameos is not really the issue I think - I doubt Coates would be happier if he gets those 10 mins on the pitch. Personally I would try him next to Agger.
ReplyDeleteFsg and Rodgers are fooling us ,they (fsg and rodgers)knows too well how we fail to sign Clint dempsey then that window was close and we were struggling all through till these january transfer window and uptill now they could not sign any reasonable striker that ever one could have welcome, but rodgers and his people are after sending players out just as last time, for some month ago rodgers have been boasting in all the column that the club have kept money available for these january transfer but now there is some comment that no money for any player or players coming in again, what a shame .
ReplyDeleteI think BR rates Kelly because he is versatile and got picked ahead of Enrique when Johnson was moved to the left and Kelly played right back.
ReplyDeleteSome decent points mentioned but please don't go overboard and say Rodgers out just yet..
ReplyDeleteThen send him on loan and if one of our main defenders gets injured and Kelly and Wisdom who are natural centre backs are also injured, we can then recall him.
ReplyDeleteWould you play Agger in midfield? I ask this question because Coates is a very similar player to Agger, being that he is a natural ball-playing defender. And as far as sometimes scoring goals, Agger and Skrtel both sometimes score goals too, so that is a moot point.
ReplyDeleteAssaidi isn't being mismanaged, he is lightweight and needs to get stronger before he can play a role in the Premier League, so he is under a weights regimen
ReplyDeleteExactly and when he does come on in the Premier League games, he isn't coming on as a centre back, he is coming on in a position where his mistakes won't be punished as much, the defensive midfield position.
ReplyDeleteOk, so he rotates the squad, what will you say then when we underperform? Will you then blame squad rotation? As far as the point you make about Carroll and Borini, he didn't farm Carroll out and then buy Borini, Borini was one of his first purchases, Carroll was loaned out towards the end of the window. If you are going to make a statement like that, the Samed Yesil would be the player more fitting rather than Borini. Truth is, Carroll, although he is a good player, he doesn't fit our system. And as far as Rodgers goes, we are in a much better position than we were last season. This season, we are 7 points behind Chelsea, who are in 4th. Last season, we were 8 points behind Chelsea who were in 6th and we were a massive 17 points out of the top 4. So although we are in the same league position, we are much better off with Rodgers as we are much closer points wise.
ReplyDeleteYou say our defense it terrible, but it's not as bad as you think it is. Our goals against for the season so far is 26, there are only a handful of teams with a better defense, Man City and Chelsea with 19, Stoke with 20 (and by the way, Stoke have always been a very good defensive team, all of the top sides struggle against them), Arsenal with 22 and West Ham with 24 (which is no surprise as Sam Allardyce is known for his tough defensive sides, notably Bolton). We have a better defense than 2 of the top 4 sides, so again, our defense isn't as bad as you seem to think it is.
ReplyDeleteIt's no surprise that our first penalty in 18 months came against Stoke.
ReplyDeleteOf course it's allowed, after all, that's what happened when we loaned Shelvey out, Lucas got injured and we recalled him.
ReplyDeleteIf I was Jamie Carragher, who loves the club genuinely, I would personally plead with BR to play Sebastian Coates ahead of myself for the sake of the club. He is the future of the club with his talent, do not waste what is in your possession and keep wasting precious money looking for a replacement. Liverpool should look to buy another defender to anticipate Jamie's retirement though.
ReplyDeleteThey didn't sign Dempsey because they weren't going to be held to ransom over a player who Fulham wanted more for than he was worth. He hasn't exactly set the Premier League alight while at Tottenham. Clubs for too long have been able to hold us to ransom because we are Liverpool and they have bumped up their prices, look at what we bought Downing, Henderson and Carroll for. This was down to the fact that their parent clubs held us for ransom and we paid it. We are starting not to pay too much for players that aren't worth it. And money is available for the January transfer window, we have after all just bought Daniel Sturridge. We couldn't have bought him if we had no money.
ReplyDeleteLet injured favorite Kelly go, and keep Coates.loan him so he can get more regular game. See it in a season, if he develope much keep him. A worth defender if he have a chance to play.
ReplyDeletey doesnt br plays him instead of jamie carragher every time that we are winning ?? br is an idiot! he chooses allen over dembele and 15m on borini instead of looking elsewhere and search for other good players like michu for example. and dont forget the mess he did with the andy carroll transfer. the owner is at fault so is he. he doesnt seem to have any knowledge of the transfer market. he only wants to buy plays that he know.. allen, borini, and now sturidge. y not ba or pato! pato also was available for 12m, he is a proven goal scorer and young as well. still not the right market? lol maybe he believes that pato will be available again in the summer transf window, idiot!
ReplyDeleteNo surprise then that I can't grasp the logic behind it as it is not logic but sentiment that's behind Carra's appearances.
ReplyDeleteYeah, why else offer him a new contract anyway.
ReplyDeleteWe played it once, which probably means that BR likes it and we did some training of it. And it could work a miracle vs utd, me thinks.
ReplyDeleteJust don't want to believe that...
ReplyDeleteI think its inconsistent, and were losing to many games because of it, regardless of those pointless stats you've kindly taken the time to point out.
ReplyDeletewe miss a mascherano or sissoko in my opinion.
and we need a tough reliable defender who reads the game well like carra in his prime, dare I say a player like jt.
aye without doubt Br has wasted a lot of money. 11 million on a striker who was still learning his trade, 15 million on a midfielder that passes sideways and backwards something hendo did all last season. We're short of one cm in the mould of toure and diame on a free would have been ideal.
ReplyDeleteIm flummoxed as to why someone would overlook Ba and go for sturridge at almost twice the cost. Its shocking if true that we paid cole 3 million to go!
