"If there's no ego..." - Nicol, Aldo and Hamann react to £12m Sturridge signing.

It's fair to say that many Reds fans (myself included) are not enamoured by the £12m signing of Daniel Sturridge. Prior to the deal going through yesterday, a whole host of ex-Liverpool players - including John Aldridge and Dietmar Hamann - voiced their doubts about the 23-year old, but now that he's here, what do Aldo and Didi think about the signing?

Reacting to the news, Aldo admitted that it 'would've been nice to have gone for [Demba] Ba too', but overall, he seemed pleased with the signing Sturridge signing:

"Quite a few doubters re Sturridge [but] I think he'll prove them wrong. £10 is not £36M OR £20M.

"Stats at Bolton: 8 goals in 11 appearances in the Premier League. We need goal threats, and hopefully Brendan may have something up his sleeve please"
.

Earlier in the week, Hamann expressed concern that Sturridge 'is not a prove goalscorer', and he sounded a note of caution after the deal went through. He said:

"Sturridge has got all the tools to be a success at Anfield, but he's still got to prove to be a prolific scorer in Premier League though"

Steve Nicol is not a fan of Sturridge, and several times over the last few weeks he's stated as much. Discussing the signing on ESPN last night, the Scot remained unconvinced, but hoped to be proven wrong, noting:

"Look, you know how I feel about him. The potential is there, and he has all the tools, but can he do it? If he's hungry, and there's no ego, and he plays where he's told to play, then that will be good news for Liverpool".

To be honest, I'm not that thrilled with the Sturridge signing, but hopefully he'll be a big success, and I'll be rooting for him to succeed.

After last night's superb victory against Sunderland, the club is in a perfect position to really push on and get into the top four, and as I've argued since day one of Rodgers' reign, I'm convinced Liverpool can do it.

Come one you Reds!

  2. and re: sturridge, I don't believe there is much to worry in terms of ability, I think he's a far better option than AC. I understand these doubts derive predominately from his attitude, however, everyone, including he, probably realise this is his last realistic chance at a big club. Hopefully, this can serve as great motivation that will spur him on to be at the best of his ability. He's definitely got the talent.

  3. Up? I haven't gone to bed yet! I'm a bit of a night owl. Agree with you re Sturridge, but not impressed with Rodgers' 'last chance' comments, but that's another article.

  4. Not a big fan either but I will root for him as long as he is in the Red shirt of Liverpool. Could be a good change for him. A new challenge sometimes can bring out the beast/best in a player.
Welcomed win for the new year. Nice one lads.

  6. We have some tough games coming up soon. I think top 4s way off. Ill be surprised. Albeit pleasantly if we did. Cant to see what this lad can do and where he is going to play.

  7. I think we needed someone more of a poacher, like Chicharito. But I'm happy with D.S. being here. If he does mesh with Suarez, that will be a hell of a combo. If not, I feel confident that if Rodgers needs to rest Suarez, and Sturridge is in his natural position, we will at least have a chance to put up some goals.

Can't wait to see who else we bring in!!!!
    YNWA!

  8. We know he has speed and agility! If he can drag a defender away and feed Suarez then for 12m and age 23 it's a good thing!
Also will help with rotating the likes of Sterling much more!
We need art king players and if Rogers wants him and he is eager to prove himself... Then all he has to do is work hard and good things may come! :)

  9. Like a lot of fans i hoped for someone else but now that he,s here i hope he hits the ground running & i wish him well, lets hope we can be more consistent this year & make anfield a place to dread!! :)

  10. Re Ince, he shouldn't be a priority because we have Assaidi (who is a left winger and should be used a LOT more). Would also like to see Kevin Gameiro arrive to back up Sturridge and Suarez but apparently that signing won't happen until at least the summer. Would've also loved to have seen a defender arrive e.g. Ogbonna. And it looks like Joe Cole is FINALLY GONE!!! But it looks like Rodgers' plan is starting to come together, because although results are the most important part to a managers success, another key factor is how well we play and we've played well for a lot of our games.

  11. Jamie, top four is slim we had our chance to close the gap. After Norwich we have Man U, Man City and Arsenal away from away in a row. We will fall further behind because Tottenham and Everton will keep winning. The top four is a position for teams that take results into their own hands and don't rely on others. Have forgotten that basic principle. The moment we become responsible for our own results the top four is ours.

  12. Like any transfer, there is a risk that Sturridge won't deliver the goods, but, as those pundits have said, he has all the tools to be a really good player for us.

Aldo would have found it nice if we went for Demba Ba, too. Now, I would have found it interesting. Would he choose the League Cup winners or the Champions of Europe? Would we offer him a better wage package than Abramovich funded Chelsea? Had he joined us, would he have started engineering a move for pastures new almost immediately, just as he did at Newcastle. And finally, would we have been able to trigger his clause or was it a clause saying he can move for 7m to a club that played in the CL this season.

  13. Better not hold your breath. We might bring in noone else.

  14. potential yet again, the thing is what happens if they reach there potential do we sell them for a profit and buy more potential

  15. Last night was outstanding, amazing and brilliant... Steven played second great game in a row, Downing and Hendo keep reminding us they didn't forget to play the game, Suso looks much better through the middle and Sterling -Suarez better from game to game. If we had Enrique I would say we wouldn't lose to utd, and now it is up to BR to find a way out of the situation...

  16. Your right about the 'last chance' thing. At least let the guy put on the shirt!

  17. I wasn't overly keen on DS joining LFC. Now he is here good luck to him. Hope he makes me eat my words!!

    ReplyDelete
  18. agree me too but lets hope he can prove us wrong nothing would please me more than to see him go bang in 20 goals a season as it would mean were moving in the right direction

  19. i would settle for 6 points anything more would be a bonus

  20. Norwich is a must, if we are Liverpool we can beat utd, and other two are inconsistent enough and  playing away could benefit us- we have a hell of counter attack(specially with D.S. in the team). Keep the faith...

    ReplyDelete
  21. the norwich game is a must win. cant see picking up a win from manchester or arsenal.

id be satisfied with win from norwich and being able to draw 2 of the three games

    ReplyDelete
  22. How does everybody raise such concerns about Sturridge's apparent attitude, while having no qualms about saying that they'd have liked Ba to arrive at LFC???

    ReplyDelete
  23. well lads. transfer window isnt shut yet! more striking options thank you!

and off with downing and cole.

  24. Norwich is a must, if we are Liverpool we can beat utd, and other two are inconsistent enough and  playing away could benefit us- we have a hell of counter attack(specially with D.S. in the team). Keep the faith... And Arsenal has tougher sched

  25. i think it's brendan's mind game coming in to play early, just as he did with downing and enrique.

    ReplyDelete
  26. i have heard about his ego and selfishness, but i think we should take him as we find him in a liverpool shirt. if he plays for the team, scores and assists, then that's all i am interested in.

    ReplyDelete
  27. I hope we get Dries Mertens and Tom Ince and butland as cover for reina , and send out Cole and Downing.

i think we are set with strikers, Borini is fit soonish i think? i think he will do well if played trough the middle.

  28. Latest from wonderfull internet. Cole in medical for westham. we pay 4 million severence package.

    the greed.

instead of freeing funds we pay 4 mil to get rid of him. a part of me wishes the deal wont go trough and he rots in reserves without playing a match, just sitting in bench never playing untill the deal is done. wonder who wants him after 2 more years.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Agreed. Norwich is a must. But, Who is the match official against manure?
Lets look at his stats and performance on games between Liverpool and Manure from the past. Must be interesting information before the game. Jamie, Would be nice if you would be able to enlighten us with some stats.
Sorry to trouble you, but you have the resources we don't.

  30. is the same, we still have to pay his wages but if we pay now he won't be affecting the team during training.

    ReplyDelete
  31.  He remind me of Nani. That how worry I am.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Another rubbish Brit and one who Rodgers spent time with at Chelski another signing which shows not a great deal of research or imagination.
Dont know why Liverpool have such a large scouting network when virtually all their buys are down the road.

    ReplyDelete
  33. He is not a bad player if I am honest. I'm not thrilled that we signed him but I am not upset. I got a feeling he'll do well for us.

Now we need a winger, defensive Mid.

    Come on Ince and Diame!

    ReplyDelete
  34. At least we would fcuk up his plans...

    ReplyDelete
  35. Yeah I thought the "last chance" stuff, was a bit of a public put down on the lad, not really needed.

    ReplyDelete
  36. it is a real make or break few games coming up, we need that win at Norwich, and if we can then get a few results from the big games we got after, we will be looking very strong, if not, it could spell the end of BR, as coming back up the table after will be hard. Which would be a shame, as I like a lot of what I see from us on the pitch

    ReplyDelete
  37. I still think we should put in a cheeky bid for Walcott, just to see, slim chances but who knows.

    ReplyDelete
  38. we will save 3 million by paying him off. that in itself is ridiculous but its our fault for signing a 29 year old up to a four year 90k deal!

    ReplyDelete
  39. Rodgers had left before sturridge arrived.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Sturridge himself will be the biggest hurdle to success. The LFC fans will accept and support him if he puts the team first, and tries to use his bag of tricks wisely. If he does a Cisse and shoots all the time when he should pass, then it could all backfire. While £12m is a lot of money, he will have a sell on valuem so we are looking at risking around £5-6 m over the next 18 months to9 2 years which is worth a go, considering how good he could be.

Me, I'd much rather go for a Llorente or Negredo but maybe, just maybe we haven't been given any encouragement from their camps, and need to challenge for 4th or 3rd before we do

    ReplyDelete
  41. funny thing the transfare window is open and reina stars makin a few saves.so if no one comes in for him will he he go back to his normal piss poor performence as we have seen over the last 2 seasons

  42. rafa ,albert the itie , janowic, cole,  u signed some crap, chelski and u deserve each other

  43. ESPN was saying that after Sturridge was signed, there was one more contract expected to be signed as soon as he clears the physical. There was also talk of a surprise "big name" that might be coming to Anfied. While I don't buy into the David Villa hype and supposed sightings of Villa in Liverpool, I do think at least one more player will be on their way, especially if LFC can dump Andy Carroll before the end of the window.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Possible, but I think Rodgers said that we may not sign someone else in January.

    ReplyDelete
  45. I definitely felt something was off with Rodgers' and Gerrard's comments...

    ReplyDelete
  46. I believe Sturridge will do well for us. At Chelsea, they had Drogba and Torres, so it is difficult for him to break through with Roman breathing down the manager's neck to play Torres more. I was impressed with him during his short playing time at Chelsea and he comes from a team that plays the ball on the ground a lot. So, he should fit in and this deal makes more sense than the Andy Carroll's one.

  47. That piece of news really does not make me feel any better about it.
