'He is very effective' - LFC offered controversial €7m star on a free. Replace Cole...?

Liverpool have reportedly been offered the chance to sign Portuguese winger Ricardo Quaresma.

Besiktas have terminated Quaresma's contract, and according to reports in Spain, his agent Jorge Mendes - who also represents Cristiano Ronaldo and Jose Mourinho - has been in contact with Liverpool about the possibility of a deal.

Quaresma - who cost the club €7.3 - had previously been banished to the to youth team after a bust-up with chairman Fikret Orman over his refusal to sign a contract extension, and in an interview recently, board member Tamer Kıran barked:

"Despite being contracted to the club, we do not see a future for Quaresma here. We wish to part ways with Quaresma, we want to find him a new club. Quaresma will not be rejoining the squad, we have no plans to introduce him back into the team at a later date either."

In September, several sources claimed that Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers was allegedly 'ready to open talks with Quaresma over a two year, £80k a week deal, and now that he's a free agent, it looks like his Agent is following up on that prior interest.

I can't see Liverpool going in for Quaresma:

* He recently 29 yesterday, and doesn't fit FSG's transfer profile.

* His career is littered with disciplinary issues; why would Rodgers take the risk of upsetting the spirit he's building at LFC?

* 80k a week for a player who has flattered to deceive for his entire career? If FSG refused to pay a reasonable price for the infinitely more effective - and Premier League proven - Clint Dempsey, why would they pay a discipline case 80k a week?

* On top of everything else, the Portuguese has scored only 9 goals since 2008, which is not the kind of creative return LFC need.

Despite his troubles in Turkey, Besiktas captain Ibrahim Toraman recently praised the winger. He told NTV Sport:

"You cannot question Ricardo's abilities. If he adapts to a team, he is very effective. He played crucial roles here from time to time"

In a recent interview, former Besiktas goalkeeper Rustu Recber also jumped to Quaresma's defence:

"If he [Quaresma] had played throughout the season, maybe Besiktas could be leaders now. I don't understand why he was sacrificed so suddenly. This is also a marketing mistake. They made him lose his value."

With Joe Cole on the verge of leaving, there's a vacancy in the squad. Would Quaresma be be worth a punt on a free?

  2. Yes, but not for 80k.

  3. Back from Holiday!

If we signed him when he was still at Porto then maybe but he cannot hack big leagues. He struggled in Spain (mainly because of injuries), excelled in Portugal, struggled in England and Italy, and done well in Turkey.

It's too late to go for him. 80K pw? He is not worth that at all.

He is a really good player on his day but lacks consistently for the big clubs. Pass over this player and sign Ince instead.

PS Joe Cole, thank you but goodbye.

  4. Thanks, but no thanks!
Rather see Assaidi fill up that gap!

  5. Never! He's always been overrated!

  6. I agree, rather see Assaidi on the wing! Quaresma was heavily linked with us when he was at Porto, but now we do not need a repeat of the Joe Cole scenario - a player past his peak on ridiculous wages!!

  7. I hope we are not paying 3mn to Cole, ridiculous.

  8. Even though he is on a free, at them wages, and the fact I don`t think he will cut it, he sounds like joe cole no2, so a nope from me

  9. Attitude problem. No. Should have kept Joe.

  11. I just read his Wikipedia write-up.  Usually a wiki has good things to say about people.  This Wiki is totally opposite.  He has fallen rapidly out of favor with every team he has played for.  One or two might be the a personality dispute between player and coach...every team is a red flag.  I think we should pass on this guy.

  12. Cole off to West Ham. Hammers to pay him £30k a week initially and Liverpool to pay £50k a week for the next 18 months.

  13. I see this all the time, the club a player departed from still contributes some wages. Why can't a player like Cole accept he isn't as good as he once was and just earn a little less. If he still commands 80K+ a week that's a joke surely?

  14. Thanks but no! His wage demand is high. Assaidi is worth to try to test his talent into first team and don't forget Pacheco, I would love to see Pacheco action soon! Many talented youngster in our academy, don't waste any more money for flop players.

  16. I honestly wrote that Balotelli bit without having knowledge of the pictures that are out today. There are pictures in today's media of bust up between Balo and Mancini. Good timing! ;)

  17. NO thank you. he wasnt that good at his best.

  18. Not for 80k a week. Maybe £40k a week and then top up salary per appearances.  If he has been released, it will take him 1-2 months to get upto speed so we wouldnt see the best of him until next year by which time he will be 30.  Actually, forget what i said, because quite frankly we have a whole squad of players better than him already.

  19. i'd rather try milk every ounce of footballer left in pacheco then waste money on him.

  20. £8.5m in wages over 2 years is too much of a risk!

  21. Replace Cole? Is he injury prone?

Pay me £120,000 a week and I'd be perfect to replace Cole.

Cole has been a total waste of money, possibly the biggest waste in LFC history. If no-one was brought in to 'replace him, the squad would no weaker. All the talent and potential on the planet is worth nothing if it never touches the pitch.

  22. What a failure of a player to be linked with liverpool. Shows desperation. ill say no more for a semi retired player

  23. Looks like Cole will be off, even though I`m not overly happy about paying 3mil to get rid of him, I think it is great we will be saving 4mil, over what would have been the last 18months of his deal. I`m really happy FSG seem to be sorting our books a lot. We have made a lot of savings from the wage bill, and mainly lost squad/fringe players. I will be very interested to see the new set of books when they come out, to see if we are now turning a profit. I`m sure the last set read 50mil loss (was stated down to other factors, like paying off a existing loan plus manager changes etc I think).

So this brings me to FFP, is it actually happening? Anyone think any clubs will get done for breaking the rules? Some teams (not just prem) still seem to be spending crazy amounts. I know they get money from maybe a bigger stadium, and CL money, but surely it can`t cover how much some our spending? Or will the powers that be, just be happy that say Man Cities, spending is coming down year per year, so take that as a ok sign. I know Chelsea make there first profit in years last year. We have ramped up Sponsorship deals, cut wage bills, so must be getting close to being ready for FFP. If they do enforce is well, there could be a few shake ups.

How does Anzi get away with spending 100`s of millions on players and have a stadium the size of a championship team, and not such a massive fan base? surely FFP should come down on them and PSG, as I can`t see either turning profits.

  24. Way to inconsistent. I'm glad that we never got him when Rafa looked to sign him.

  25. In football manager maybe, sadly not in reality.

  26. We don't want to make same mistake of Joy Cole. Secondly, if we need winger than we will sign young ince insteam of old horse at such a high price

    ReplyDelete
  27. No, even if he is paying us the 80k to play for us.

    ReplyDelete
  28. No way. Quaresma has a terrible attitude, poor recent track record. As a poster above stated, not even if he paid us 80k pw.

    ReplyDelete
  29. I thought we paid him a lump sum equivalent to half his current wages from now till his contract ends, is it true we are paying weekly like you say?

  30. I was just going off what BBC was saying during the day.

  31. how do you replace jo cole ?????
    what was his position ?????
    what did he offer???
one answer if it for centre of the park, Alonso.
    ince deserves a proper chance

  32. Rodgers would never sign a player with an attitude like his. I would be surprised if we sign him.

  33. Ah ok, I have seen varying reports from different outlets, guess it's hard to know the true picture.

  34. We don't need a rotten apple. I think the last thing the kids in the team need is to look up to someone like Quaresma who seems too big for his boots. Say what you want about Suarez, you can't fault his application. The same is not true for Quaresma.

  35. I like the prospect of Ince. Although only a prospect still and playing at a lower level, and bearing in mind that he only started playing regular first team football 18 months ago, to have scored the number of goals he has done from a wide position (a few assists in there also) he merits looking at. Especially as out wide is one of our weakest areas along with centre forward.

  36. Amazing player....

  37. We don't need to replace a player who's contribution to the team that never existed.

    ReplyDelete
  38. We will not pay out big wages just to pick somebody up on a free transfer under FSG, they have be burnt sorting out the mess that was left by H+G with players such as Joe Cole.

This is a non-starter if he wants anywhere near 80k a week.
