Arrogance? Why BR and Gerrard should apologise for ridiculous Sturridge comments...

If one thing is certain about LFC it's this: After the club's goalscoring woes over the last year, any new striker that comes into the team is going to be under intense pressure. That's a given. The weight of expectation and fan demand to deliver is massive at Anfield, and history proves that some players just can't handle it. Prior to his injury, Fabio Borini arguably folded under the pressure, and failed to deliver the goals demanded of him. Daniel Sturridge is the latest striker to put his head above the parapet, and in my view, Reds boss Brendan Rodgers and club captain Steven Gerrard have already put the the 23-year old in a tough position.

Discussing Sturridge's signing last night, Rodgers inisted that the former Chelsea man will bring 'power and presence' to the club's forward line, but he also delivered the following veiled warning: Perform, or you're finished at the top level. He said:

"If he [Sturridge] wants to stay at this level, this is probably his last chance. He made a move as a young player to Chelsea and it has been difficult. The biggest thing is hunger though. This is probably his last chance, that will give him the hunger".

Steven Gerrard then jumped on the bandwagon and further undermined Sturridge with the following warning:

"He has said he wants to play football for a big club. There'll be no excuses. He'll be with good players at a great club. It's all there for him. He just has to go and grasp it with both hands".

What kind of leadership is this? What kind of welcome is this?! With the greatest respect to Rodgers and Gerrard, these comments are arguably counter-productive and will only serve to massively increase the pressure already on Sturridge's shoulders.

Gerrard's 'warning' is particularly heinous; it reads (between the lines) like Sturridge is somehow not worthy enough to play for LFC; that he should be privileged to be accorded the honour of playing with 'good playera at a great club'.

It's like Gerrard is saying: "Well, you wanted a move to a club with players as good as me, well now you've got it. Get out there and show me you're worthy of playing alongside me, because if you don't, then you're out'.

It's arrogance, pure and simple (IMO).

What right does Gerrard have to publicly tell a new signing that he has 'no excuses' for not reaching a certain level of performance?Sturridge played with 'good players' at Man City and Chelsea too, and I don't recall the likes of Lampard et al saying this kind of thing in public.

The same goes for Rodgers' comments, which - like Gerrard's - will just create negative headlines before the striker has even kicked a ball for Liverpool.

Just look around: Practically every news provider is running with the 'Sturridge on last warning' and 'Gerrard warns Sturridge' headlines (or variations thereof), and it's hard to see how this is productive for the player.

The knives will probably come out for Sturridge at some point anyway, but the press have now been gifted an enticing avenue of attack, and Rodgers and Gerrard's warnings will inevitably be used as a stick with which to beat Sturridge with:

* If he doesn't start scoring straight away, the press (and fans) will probably argue that he's not good enough at the top level.

* If he goes on a barren run at some stage, he'll be accused of lacking 'hunger'.

* If he doesn't turn out to be the goalscorer Liverpool need, Rodgers will be constantly reminded/challenged about his comments in press conferences.

Put yourself in Sturridge's position: you start a new job, and your boss announces to the whole company that this job is your last chance in the industry, and you have to perform or, basically, you're out. Hardly motivating, is it?

Of course, it's also possible that he'll be galvanised by the double-warning, and hopefully that will happen, but I doubt it. It's not as if Rodgers and Gerrard know Sturridge really well, is it? With that in mind, how do they know how he'll respond to their comments? How do they know if he'll react positively or negatively? With the likes of Henderson, Downing and Enrique, Rodgers had at least worked with them for a few months before publicly threatening their Liverpool futures.

Additionally, is it really fair or accurate to say that it's Sturridge's 'last chance' at the top level? In reality, it's arguably his first real chance at a top club, because, unless I'm sorely mistaken, Chelsea and Man City never really gave him a proper run in their respective first teams.

If Rodgers' statement is a pseudo mind-game designed to motivate Sturridge, then I hope it works, but if warning new players on the day they sign is such an effective tactic, why has no other manager ever used it? I sincerely doubt you'll be able to find similar comments from any other manager in a top league, and the reason for that is simple: Warning a new player he's in the last chance saloon *on the day he signs* is a ridiculous way to proceed.

As the two main leaders of the club, Rodgers and Gerrard should be trying to reduce the pressure on Sturridge, not add to it by fanning the flames and putting him on the back-foot before a ball has even been kicked. The substance of what they're saying may well be correct, but it should've been kept behind closed doors.

In my view, both Rodgers and Gerrard should privately apologise to Sturridge for putting him under such needless media pressure.

REMINDER: Stick to the comment policy or your post will not go live. If you can't disagree without hurling insults/derogatory comments, don't blame me if you end up banned.

  1. I think that will help Sturridge to keep his feet on the ground. He has a bit of attitude, I think BR and SG knows it and are trying to get the best out of him. Am excited with DS prospect, I really see goals coming now even though I wanted a world class striker but DS will do for the time being.

  2. I think it's out of order. They could've just said these things to his face; no need to say it in public and create unnecessary pressure on him. What happens if he doesn't score for 5-6 games? The pressure would've been heavy anyway, but these warnings, it will be even worse.

  3. does the downing situation sound familiar to you, moron....

  4. Very poor article. There's nothing wrong with Gerrard backing his boyhood club, it is still one of the biggest in the world. You always look for the negatives.

  5. Man City weren't at the top level when Sturridge was there anyway. Everybody's acting like they've long been title contenders, when in reality they were relative nobody's up until about 3 years ago.

I just can't wait for Sturridge to shut everybody up with all the nonsensical criticisms of the guy

  6. Rogers thinks his dime store psychology is effective i thinks its pathetic..im surprised Gerrard has become his stooge but then again im not Rogers panders to the big personalities to make up for his lack of Kudos...at the end of the day who is he in football terms....ive stated earlier im giving rogers a chance this year .....but here is another tip to the anfield bean counters...dont give a player a massive 3.5 year deal and pay 12m for him then undermine him...he may just stick to fingers up at you and say thanks for the money ....pay me off because im gonna do jack for you.....once again the anfield transfer machine rolls into action will they ever learn

It's fine.its just abit of a push on sturridge to prove himself to his doughters,Rodgers done it with downing and hendo and they have impressed in recent weeks.

  9. Kanwar you have written some awful articles, but this one is by far the worst. 1. Borini has not scored goals as he got injured early on and didnt have time to blend with the squad. 2. You read into Gerrard's statement far too much for what is there. No doubt liverpool is a big club and this is sturridge's 2nd move in PL so yes this may be his last chance. If anything these comments will help sturridge He is not guaranteed a first team place so this is more like saying you are not getting a free ride here.

  10. Surprise surprise, Jaimie comes out with something ridiculously pompous simply to generate a completely nonsensical 'debate' about nothing.

    Obvious troll is obvious.

  11. We always shoot ourselves in the foot on these things. There was no need to say any of this (publically at least). What a welcome! In all of the current circumstances, including financial, DS is about as good as it's going to get in terms of bringing in a striker in the transfer window so we should all be encouraging him to succeed not putting him under pressure immediately. I really hope it works out for him, not least because we do need to take some pressure of the genius that is Luis.

  12. They are both entitled to their own opinion as you are yours. I am always reading comments on this site from readers that think you, Jaimie, are counter productive to the Liverpool cause. So it sounds like the pot calling the kettle black. Besides, you haven't said if you think both Gerrard and Rogers are correct in their assessment of Sturridge.

  13. Every day was your last chance under Bill Shankly, and Bob Paisley, and Joe Fagan, Brian Clough, Jock Stein, Don Revie, Bobby Robson, Alex Ferguson that's the mentality when you want to be successful. Would any of those managers apologise for expecting their players to do their multi million pound jobs? Come on son, you should know this if you're a Liverpool fan.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Yes, but they've been at the club for over a year. Sturridge signed *yesterday*, and hasn't even played a game yet.

  17.  To be honest Jaimie i dont think sturridge is the type of guy to be bothered he seems too confident....that plus he yields all the power hes 23 with a multimillion pound contract ...that plus rogers has forked out 12m of fsg coin for him means he is a commodity which fsg will wantto grow...i dont know if its verbatin that rogers and gerrard have said this so ill wait and see......it may be worth seeing if ferguson or jose have said something and hes simply copying them

  18. Where did I say Rodgers and Gerrard weren't entitled to their opinion? of course they, but I am also entitled to my view about how they handled the situation.

Whether I agree with their assessment or not is irrelevant; they shouldn't have made these comments in public.

Not even Ferguson has the Chutzpah to say these things to a new signing on the say he puts pen to paper. Mourinho has never done it; neither has Ancelotti; Hiddink, Mancini, or indeed any other top manager you can think of.

It's another own goal by LFC, and mark my words, the statements by Gerrard and Rodgers will be used by the media as a massive stick with which to beat Sturridge with.

    ReplyDelete
  19. You are the same as every other journalist out there ...

Just looking to divide opinions and getting attention with your stupid headlines ...

    ReplyDelete
  20. Yes, that may be true, but none of them ever warned a new signing on the say he signed that it was his 'last chance' (!) Those managers you mentioned would've done things behind closed doors.

    ReplyDelete
  21. I think they are right. Sturridge is at a cross-road. He is talented, but there are some doubts about his personality. What Gerrard and Rodgers said was simply to motivate the player and to make clear to him how important it is to perform now on a regular basis. We've seen quite a few talented youngsters not making in because they thought they were better than they are and so on. Ryan Babel springs to mind. Or Pennant. Earning so much money at such a young age is indeed very dangerous. If need be they should tell him every day about how things went for Pennant. What they could have done is to keep it in house.

  22. I think jamie is scared he might succeed, so try and unsettle him.

    ReplyDelete
  23. I think the comments might not just act as a motivating tool for Sturridge but also completely dispel the bs about Sturridge demanding his favoured position.

Too many players over the last 2 decades have thought they have reached the pinnacle by merely playing for Liverpool.

Looking forward to FA cup at weekend

    ReplyDelete
  24. Gerrard and Rodgers didn't say anything more than the media and bloggers have already said prior to his signing. I personally don't rate him that highly and maybe a public warning up front may avoid the Downing/Henderson dozy start syndrome.

    ReplyDelete
  25. When are you going to hold yourself to that standard?

  27. No article on our world class striker's performance last night or the match itself?

Suarez is absolutely amazing, we are blessed to have him.

Gerrard is close to his best, creatively speaking. Wow!

    ReplyDelete
  28. I don't do fawning, sycophantic praise. I leave that to those that worship players like Gods. It was Sunderland. At home. LFC should be beating them, and Suarez should be scoring against them. When the club is more consistent in the league and actually challenging for the top four then maybe I'll start jumping for joy. The last two results will mean nothing if LFC don't build on them over the next month.

    ReplyDelete
  29. All strikers have big ego's; perhaps it was simply a shot across the bow to remind him its not a case of simply walking into a team without effort. Although I admit it was a surprising statement. BR has known the lad for quite a period of time, and perhaps he felt he needed to impress upon Sturridge the job that's expected. He is going to be paid extremely well for his efforts; earn your money, work hard and be successful.

    ReplyDelete
  30. It seems you’re missing the point BR & Gero are trying
to put across. The two are trying to inspire the player and not underrating his
ability. The player was not given enough time in the field during his stay at
his former club, and this is one of the reasons for his departure. And what BR
and Gero are trying say is that Sturridge has made the right choice to come to
LFC where completion is lesser than Chelsea as the squad is small at LFC. So
don’t blame the two and putting your words in their mouth.

  31. I don't have a problem with the views expressed; they're probably right about Sturridge in some ways; I just have a problem with the public nature of the statements. It's not like Gerrard and Rodgers know Sturridge really well, is it? How do they know if what they say will motivate him or make him feel pressured? How do they know if he'll respond positively or negatively?

    ReplyDelete
  32. I wouldn't read too much into these comments. Yes, putting it out in public seems a bit silly, but let's face it, given the state of the current game, and media, everything is out there anyway. Players wages, their demands etc. You could even place some of the blame on Sturridge himself, for turning down a loan move and publicly complaining about being played out wide.

Its very possible that what Gerrard is saying is along the lines of Sturridge finally getting the opportunity that he has craved. He excelled at Bolton with lesser quality, and never received a fair go at Chelsea.
At 23, in the EPL as striker, I think expectations for Sturridge should be fairly high. He's been at the top level for several years now and trained with some world class players. He has wanted to play as a striker, and now will get the chance. If he doesn't deliver for us, then people will write him off, and he will probably drift off into the abyss.

    ReplyDelete
  33. At least let him wear the shirt!!

If anything it shows BR has some doubts in DS. So why sign him?

Now you/we have signed him, surely you should back him without the 'motivational' talk.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Also if he does not succeed the blame will need to be put at BR door. As these comments show he has some doubts in him.

    ReplyDelete
  35. I actually agree with Jaimie here  I'm not sure why , once a club that kept things behind closed doors, we now seem to publicise everything. Everyone knows our tactical approach to games, everyone knows when the manager is not happy with certain players, everyone knows when certain players aren't happy with the manager and so on.

Maybe the intention is that these words are to have a positive psychological impact on Sturridge, but for a young player, who has struggled in the early part of his career to have game time, alleviating pressure and reducing expectation is likely to be more productive. By all means, let him know what is expected of him, but behind closed doors.

    ReplyDelete
  36. They haven't. I've exhaustively checked.

    ReplyDelete
  37. No, you are missing the point. It's not about what they said, it's the manner in which they said it. BR and Gerrard could've said the same thing to Sturridge's face behind closed doors. And as I argued above, they do not know him. You need to know a player well before playing stupid mind games, otherwise it could backfire.

    ReplyDelete
  38. You are reading too much into it Jaimie...They were just trying to motivate him...Anyway I would have liked BR to bring in a marquee signing to the club but at this point any striker will do for me. Hopefully Daniel Sturidge and whoever else is coming will deliver the good for us and we can finally launch an assault on the coveted champions league places.

    ReplyDelete
  39. It's a tactic used by senior players and managers to keep the newbies grounded. Yes, using the media hype is a tactic nowadays. The likes of Mourinho are aces at it.

Most people doesn't know what goes behind the scenes in the football world. These young footballers get more money than the average person sees in their lifetime which results in a supermassive ego (Sturridge has been known to be selfish on the pitch) instantly they think it's their divine right to play however they want when they get into a team. We saw Sterling say something back to the manager in Being Liverpool and Today Balotelli is on the news for a physical scuffle with their gaffer, 2 decades ago this would have never happened. I think it's good that Gerrard and Rodgers made a public comment so now he knows that the also public knows. Besides your suggestion for an apology is ludicrous, that would mean both the captain and the manager will lose the dressing room.

    ReplyDelete
  40. BTW watch DS first interview. I don't see no arrogance. He seems happy and answers the main striker role question.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WE9Vue8aus4

I'm not one who wanted LFC to sign him but you have to give your backing now he's here.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Would you prefer they molycodled him? It's called tough love and, for all we know, they could well have told him the exact same thing to his face.

They'll be working him up as well in pre game talks, it's all positive psychology. The fact that they have both said good things about his pace, power, eye for goal, potential and ability are, to me, good things. He doesn't have to prove them wrong, he has to prove them right.

    ReplyDelete
  42. gerrard and br are absolutely right and they did say other things like he is quality, very talented player. y dont u quote that part as well huh?

    ReplyDelete
  43. Refraining from publicly warning a player on the day he signs does not = mollycoddling. if that was the case, every player in the Premier League could be described as being mollycoddled because none of them have been on the receiving end of a warning on their first day at the club.

I don't care how much of a hard time Rodgers and Gerrard give Sturridge, but it should happen behind closed doors.

    ReplyDelete
  44. We all know Gerrard is a fantastic club captain. And i never heard any player complained about him.Brendan Rodgers as well is very protective to his players. So those remarks  i think they are trying to tell Sturridge what to expect  from Liverpool as simple as that.Remember both are English and now they play for one club.If he play well for Liverpool he will know how good these guys are.Hope Sturridge will deliver and i know he will.Good lucky Dan

    ReplyDelete
  45. It's not relevant, and like so many others you are missing the point:

    * No other top manager has ever publicly warned a player on the day he signs (!)

    * Gerrard and BR's comments have created a mass of negative headlines about Sturridge ('BR warns Sturridge; New LFC signing in last chance saloon etc)

How is this positive and productive?

    ReplyDelete
  46. you may be right Jamie, time will tell. I think it's risky for BR and SG to publicly lay down the law like that to a new recruit, I personally found it a bit uncomfortable, but also it could be genius as Sturridge is known for not always having his head right!

    ReplyDelete
  47. My initial thoughts are that I possibly agree that they could and perhaps should have been comments for behind closed doors. However, I do think that the comments made by both Brendan and Steven are correct in their assessment of Sturridge's position and that such comments could be used to ascertain relatively quickly just what type of player (read attitude) they have on their hands. The comments, particularly whilst being made to the media could be counterproductive yes, if that proves to be the case then I feel that they will have learnt pretty quickly that he's not a Liverpool player and move him on. If however Sturridge himself realises and heeds the warning of Brendan and Steven, he may just prove not only to the Liverpool fans, the media but himself that he is in fact as good and talented as he arguable believes and have a great career at a great club. In summary, I feel the comments should have been kept to the dressing room, but I do not think that as they were not, it is the end of the world so to speak.

    ReplyDelete
  48. What a load of guff Jamie, as usual.

    ReplyDelete
  49. If it's a 'tactic used by senior players and managers' then please find me three examples of this happening at other clubs on the day a player signs a contract.

    Thanks.

    ReplyDelete
  50. wont FSG find it a bit odd that BR is not overly confident on someone he has just forked out 12m for...maybe the comments where taken out of context because both Gerrards and rogers comments are bizarre...sturridge could turn round and say well you payed similar money for borini and hes a similar age so why has he not got this great expectation or are you admitting he was a mistake...very odd

    ReplyDelete
  51. Going public appears to be the modern approach; was it leaked or a direct quote ?. I have seen statements that indicate BR has known the lad since the age of 12, and may know his background, personality and make up. The last thing BR requires is a de-stabling influence in the dressing room. He is trying to portray a Shanks authortive discipline that he will not put up with disruptive young players. Fergie has done this, but behind the scene's. The media is more intrusive, examples of Fergie controlling Ryan Giggs only came out in the press many years later (that would not happen now - it would be in the press the following morning).Stevie G comment is a bit odd as it simply mirrors BR comments (is it a Press statement adding 2+2 and making 5).

    ReplyDelete
  52. Gotta agree on this one, I thought both sets of comments were not called for. When I first saw them, I was like really??? I get you may not want to over hype your new guy, but to basically put them down, just seems like starting on the wrong foot. I`m sure Sturridge knows this is his last chance, but I don`t think it was needed to be made public like that by his new boss and team mate, before he had even kicked a ball for us. To me it is a total lack of respect. I do like BR, but sometimes I think he talks way to much. Keep the tatics to yourself for starters instead of telling every other team in the prem our tatics, so they know how to play against us. I really can`t stress how much I thought it was out of line to make the comments about "last chance" then Gerrard pipped in too. Not impressed one bit.

    ReplyDelete
  53. There have been times when I've seen a headline in these blogs where somebody "blasts" somebody else and on closer inspection, nothing like it has occurred. You have a way of reading things into statements that simply aren't there and a way of over-dramatising the trivial. I would put money on both Gerrard and BR having already had positive conversations with Sturridge. I also read in another blog this morning somebody criticizing Gerrard's Brilliant pass for Suarez's goal as "Hollywood". Fact is that it was class. Most of the Liverpool performance was class. To praise it is neither fawning nor sycophantic but something that genuine football supporters do

    ReplyDelete
  54. I said they ARE entitled to their opinion and you ARE entitled to yours. I never mentioned anything about not being entitled. So your first question is redundent.
My point is its a bit rich saying they should not say their opinion in public when your whole website is based on just that, your opinion in public. Get it???? Pot and kettle!!

    ReplyDelete
  55. I think they are right too, but I don`t think they should have said it publicly just after he was signed. I get the impression that cause publicly saying Downing can go (again didn`t agree with this) and since then Downing has done well, he has tried the same thing here.

My problem is, say these things to them behind closed doors, that has the same effect, without almost mocking them to the world.

    ReplyDelete
  56. Just because I haven't written a ten thousand word essay comparing Gerrard to some godlike figure doesn't mean I don't think the Sunderland performance was top notch, or that Gerrard and Suarez played well. I discussed the game with a couple of friends and praised Suarez/Gerrard; I just didn't do it online. Sue me.

    ReplyDelete
  57. This has been done for a reason, telling him this is Liverpool, this is pressure if you can't handle it the only way for you is down. Sturridge is an arrogant player telling him failure could be around the corner is a stick to get him going. In my opinion this is a joint effort my manger and captain to get the best out of him. As they know him and you don't I'll back their judgement.

    ReplyDelete
  58. why are they not entitled and you are?? they are a player and a manager at, IMO, the best club in the world. I am sure they know a little about football so therefore they are entitled to an opinion. Just like your are entitled to yours.

    ReplyDelete
  59. I agree with you, 442. He needs to hear it. before his head gets too big and we end up with a Ballotelli. If those few words dont make him want to prove SG and BR wrong then he is not up to the job and is bound to fail anyway. Do you think Suarez has let all the haters get him down???? I think not!!

    ReplyDelete
  60. Google yourself, managers do it all the time.

Mourinho critisized Ozil for not knowing Spanish as soon as he signed for Real, he said the same thing to Khedira later
I remember Fergie publicly critisizing Nani and a young Scott Wooten who only ever played one game for the scum

I see you're trying to make the point of giving the newcomer some breathing space but Apologize? to someone who hasn't even worn a red shirt by both Stevie G and Brendan? Are you having a laugh?

    ReplyDelete
  61. Absolutely no way in heck BR or SG should be publicly apologizing for their pep talk - because that's what it is. What kind of show of indecisiveness and weakness would that be to all and sundry.
They've made their point. Now get on with it.

    ReplyDelete
  62. Exactly my original point! But JK is entitled to his point even if, IMO, and with all due respect, he focuses on all the wrong things and then airs them out in public.

    ReplyDelete
  63. He's an arrogant guy, Sturridge
If you let that behavior continue you will have a Balotelli vs Mancini fight scene (just with BR and Sturridge)

    ReplyDelete
  64. And Sturridge should be performing in a Liverpool shirt too, right???? And he should be told that!!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  65. I disagree. Reverse psychology here. It's said to test his desire and perseverance to be a success at lfc. He hasn't made it at city or Chelsea so here's his chance. And he does have the qualities to be a great player for us. However, only he can deliver and the squad will help him achieve it

    ReplyDelete
  66. Of course they are entitled to their opinion, but maybe going public with it wasn't the best idea.

    ReplyDelete
  67. How pathetic to say "sue me" If you feel they played well, have the courage to say it on line instead of letting us think you haven't a clue

    ReplyDelete
  68. Isn't it a deliberate ploy on BR's part - that SG, as captain, is following? And can't the same tactic, on BR's part, be seen to be working so far with Downing?

    ReplyDelete
  69. Nobody was asking you to write an essay Jamie, just to not write a loaded criticism

    ReplyDelete
  70. Gerrard is spot on, BR took it too far- at his age this can't be his last chance. BR made silly comment, again. End of story.

    ReplyDelete
  71. Is it negative press ? and for who ?; your talking about the new signing !.BR wants to have the same authortive appearance as Ferige - I am the boss re- previous statements -"No player will tell me where they are too play -Thats my job "  !.

  77. I'm all for keeping things behind closed doors, but let's have a look at it from a different angle.

If, for instance, players perform poorly for a rather long period of time and the manager still backs the player in public, the fans might turn against the manager in one way or the other. This example can be used for any non-performing club and any manager. In that case, at least for the fans, it would be better if they knew that the manager knew the player wasn't performing. How to do it? Go public.

In case of Sturridge some have mentioned his allegedly poor attitude and that he didn't make it elsewhere, that sort of negative stuff. In this case the manager and the club captain have made known to the fans that they are aware of the problem. Some may argue now that we shouldn't have signed him in the first place in this case, but I think it is a kick up the backside for the player. Sure, he has just joined, but the general public reception among those who follow the Premier League seems to be that he has performed and achieved less than he should have, given his talent. Now the player knows that we as a club are not willing to carry any passengers and the fans know that he knows, the fans know that the manager and club captain demant performances and quick.

    ReplyDelete
  78. pls explain the "certain type of race" comment. And was it coincidence that all the players you quoted were black??

    ReplyDelete
  79. Of course the other comments made by br and gerro including the positives are relevant, how could they not be? They provide context otherwise it could be interpreted the whole thing was negative which it certainly wasn't. It would seem be can't win, when he praises the players it's described as being 'disgustingly over the top' and when he gives them a warning or kick up the backside (like hendo, downing and Enrique - now sturridge) he gets slagged off for being too harsh! Not everyone will agree with everything he says but one can only judge the players in question performances and they have improved - time will tell with sturridge. You also make assertions about damaging players confidence etc when you have no idea whether that is or has been the case, performances suggest otherwise. Another assertion is that no manger has ever done this previously, just because you can't find an example doesn't mean it hasn't happened in the history of football either here or abroad. That is a ludicrous statement. References are made to the negative impact this 'could' have with the media but you yourself are already trying to create a negative situation with this thread! This just encourages more br bashing for
Comments many find acceptable and could prove to be beneficial to the player

Yeh if muppets keep reading to far into stuff making it out to be a big deal and only using half of what was said. Liverpool is a big club it is his last chance to prove him self and he should take it with both hands. Why don't u let the manager manage the players. What team do u manage I'm sure Rodgers and gerrard would have an opinion on your shocking journoulism

    ReplyDelete
  82. Absolutely spot on!!!! I could  not agree more!!

  83. Since when did you become God! The intent by you regarding the responses to your "opinion", seems to infer that your comments are cast in concrete and cannot be refuted in any way shape or form. How wrong of you to post encouraging comments like "you'll be banned", wow strong words to deter further comment, good or bad. Look in the mirror you are a two bit reporter.

    ReplyDelete
  86. I really don't see any issue in Gerrard and BR saying that Sturridge has a chance to finally prove to the world what a good player he is.

He is privileged - as I'm sure both BR and SG would say of their own positions at the club.

Everyone is different and I'm sure that BR deals with new players according to their own makeup. Rafa on the other hand dealt with players at arms length, treating them all the same.

You've made a mountain out of something smaller that could only aspire to be a mole-hill!

  88. Thank you, CN. I could not have said it better!

  89. Personally I think it's about time the senior people at our club came out and laid it on the line, as it should be. Reading between the lines they're telling DS that they've taken a gamble on him, don't let them down. The fact they said it so publicly will do no harm at all. DS is a big boy, with a big ego and a massive potential...something like this will only fire him up. Unfortunately there are people out there who like to sensationalise every LFC story to get readers/hits. Don't make a mountain out of a molehill Jamie. BR has worked with DS before at Chelsea, he knows what his temperment is like and what gets him going...leave it to the experts.

    ReplyDelete
  90. I have read this article and made it to this stage of the comments and just couldn't resist saying my piece. Truth Hurts, I cannot agree with you more and think others who are disagreeing are refusing to see the truth as it would mean them backing down from their opinion which is obviously not something their ego can deal with. And they talk of OTHER people's egos. Again, totally agree. POT, KETTLE. btw, totally believe DS will be awesome working with the likes of BR and SG!

    ReplyDelete
  91. The answer here is simple.  Gerrard and BR are not wrong in their statements.  If Sturridge does feel the pressure from the comments made, which I doubt very much....then should he really be a Liverpool player?...how is he going to cope on an European cup final (which lets be honest is where we belong) taking the final penalty if he cant even cope with these comments made by the gaffer and Stevie G? Come on!!

Like I said if he's feeling the pressure by the comments then get going as he's not good enough for us!!

Having said that,  I think Sturridge is a great signing and I'm convinced we will see him score quite a few goals.

we are divided into 7 continents for a reason as god knew the 7 races had to be apart. Each race having certain characteristics, good and bad.ie South Americans are very tempremantal and cannot control their emotions, and a lot of Bl--k players feel victimised and because of this have a chip on their shoulder knowing they might stand out a little in a crowd so sometimes can act in mercenary manner as they dont feel they belong, not all but a lot of them then have no feelings for the club they play for and can use the club just to further their own standing until another club comes in with a better offer, then they refuse to play or refuse to put any effort in until they get the move they want..

    ReplyDelete
  93. I think the comments where made with the best intentions bur neither Gerrard or Rogers  have the skill or wordsmanship to not make it sound like sinister veiled threat ...as we have seen with suarez and kenny the Liverpool PR machine stinks of amateurism and is very poorly advised....in this day and age every sound bite is picked up and analyzed some managers can make it work for them some cant....at this moment Rogers and Liverpool as a club cant so would be best advised to keep comments in house or at the very least low key

    ReplyDelete
  94. Not sure BR knows the lad for quite a period of time. When Rodgers was at Chelsea, Sturridge was at Man City.

    ReplyDelete
  97. Read between the authors lines(IMO)....Sturridge isn't a 4 year old child...he's a professional footballer. Usually interview soundbites aren't taken very seriously as everyone knows they're made on the fly. The author is like a bad journalist, taking words out of context. In the author opinion you can't say boo to a ghost without him getting offended. How fragile? For those easily offended I just used him for the ghost, didn't intentionally want to offend any women out there.

Recently read in an interview with Sturridge that he never demanded to be played as a centre forward. He said that he'd play wherever he's asked to play and that he's learned a lot playing on the wing. Still he thinks that his best position is as a centre forward.

The more I read of this article and it's comments, the more I can't believe something meant to be a minor nudge in the right direction by two men that will have a big influence on Daniel Sturridge's career has been blown up so negatively! I have read the many reports of this in the news today and not ONE report has made it sound anything like I am hearing here. I agree with you Huzi, apologise for what?? Trust me, DS will be praising them both soon enough once he has his scoring boots on.....and they will be praising him!!

    ReplyDelete
  112. It's amazing how many people are desperate to prove someone wrong that they completely miss the point they're supposedly trying to prove:

    * Mourinho made his comment about Khedira one month after he signed, not 'as soon as he signed'.

    * Ferguson did not publicly criticise Nani on the day he signed for United, or indeed for months afterwards.

    * Ferguson criticising Wooten when he signed? Prove it.

The point I am making has nothing to do with the argument you're attempting to mount.

    ReplyDelete
  113. And white people think they are the cream of the crop. Find your comment somewhat stereotypical, if not xenophobic. BTW, I am considered white, too (although I can't find a spot on my body that is white as a piece of paper or milk).

  120. That is complete and utter nonsense. If people think they can turn up on this site and spew out abuse then they are sorely mistaken. This site is for intelligent, reasoned, civil discussion above LFC.

Anyone who can't do that is not welcome. Any post containing abuse/derogatory comments/insults will be deleted/edited, irrespective of whether the point being made is valid, and if you or anyone else doesn't like that, tough luck.

It's simple: people who debate like reasonable people have nothing to fear. Idiots who roll up hurling insults will get banned, and can go back to other LFC sites where abuse is par for the course.

Any fool can slag someone off; it takes a bit of intelligence to vehemently disagree with someone but do so in a civil manner.

    ReplyDelete
  121. We must be reading into this differently. I didn't see any of the comments as derogatory or in any way inflammatory: quite the opposite, in fact. One could even perceive it as them speaking out what Sturridge may even, himself, be thinking, or has even said to them. For all we know, Sturridge himself could have read the comments and thought "Damn right".

    ReplyDelete
  122. well i cant argue there.....they do know a little about football

    Hi

    I'm sorry but I have to say all you have done is taken one line from 2 articles and started a witch hunt. I could easily do the same by taking 2 other comments from the same articles and create a morePositive spin;

Daniel's arrival will help the club. He's got power, pace, strength - he has got huge potential.

"Daniel has the quality. I know he's got it - I've seen it. He suffered a bit at Manchester City and moved on to Chelsea where he hasn't played as much as he wanted but has shown flashes of brilliance.

    SG

"He's a goalscorer and the only spell he's really had that was at Bolton, but when he's played games, he's got goals.

"He gives us power, presence and mobility at the top of the field - and I think the biggest thing is hunger.

    BR

    See what I mean!

All I'm saying is you can cut a line out if an article and give it whatever twist you like. It's basically how the S*n sell papers.

Don't read too much into it just watch nd see what happens. Both BR and SG have praised him and then made realistic comments to not cause too much hype too soon.

    ReplyDelete
  127.  what squad.......

    ReplyDelete
  128. In the context of this article, it is relevant, more so than the actual quotes you printed! You have done what Fleet Street rag journos have been doing for years: missing out the main part of an article to sensationalise yours own.

Being objective and constructively critical are one thing - and you do that quite well on this site, but missing out more than half of a set of quotes to put your own interpretation onto things is completely amateur and reeks of ulterior motive.

    I expected better, Jaimie.

    ReplyDelete
  138. Cannot see a single problem with anything Gerrard has said here.

    ReplyDelete
  139. No, you have fallen into the trap of tabloid fandom, and lost sight of the overall point being made. The positive comments are irrelevant to the point I've made, which is Gerrard and BR should not have given Sturridge a public warning on the day he signed.

The positive comments do not change the meaning of those warnings, thus they are irrelevant. Additionally, in a bid to dilute the issue, you refer to those comments instead of just focusing on the issue at hand.

There is nothing sensationalised about this article; I've given my view on something that is fairly unique in football, i.e. a manager and a captain creating negative media pressure on a player on the day he signs (!)

This is an important issue, and just because you and others see it differently doesn't make it less so.

It's funny how views become sensational, unfair, negative etc when the majority don't agree with them.

This is a negative article (as yours generally seem to be), no fan would attempt to generate a dialogue on such a trivial matter. So what if its not been done before or that it was made public, there are probably all sorts of reasons why the club has chosen to take this approach which you have not considered at all. Please do ban me from making a challenging remark. Whatever your day job is, I hope you haven't given it up!

    ReplyDelete
  149. This is true Jamie K. Of course they wouldn't go as far as apologising but Rodgers certainly didn't put the same pressure on Borini or say things like its his last chance to play at a big club....... yet Borini had also played for 2 major clubs before coming to Liverpool.

"He's another attacking option and if you look at the bigger picture from the beginning of the season up until now, we have been a little bit short in the final third. He will add more strength in depth for us.

"Daniel has the quality. I know he's got it - I've seen it. He suffered a bit at Manchester City and moved on to Chelsea where he hasn't played as much as he wanted but has shown flashes of brilliance.

"I think he's at the age now when he needs to settle down, get a settled club and show consistently what qualities he's got. If he can start producing that for us on a weekly basis he can help this club move forward to where we want to be"

This is the first part of the interview...quite positive I would say!?

    ReplyDelete
  155. These comments are welcome from the CAPTAIN of LFC, and its something every "true" fan atm is thinking. Who has the right to go against what Gerrard has to say????

I don't see why Gerrard has to be nice to Sturridge's ego, this is a club that demands top performances, and we don't have time for players coming into the club thinking they have won the lottery. Its all hard work from here on out, no horsing around. How many players have we signed in the past that went off the boil and put in lacklustre performances. Its like the whole Downing thing, he can really put in a shift if he WANTS to, Rodgers was great in telling him that he was free to leave, but if he performs to the level that is accepted and expected at Liverpool then it is all good. Sturridge has to hit the ground running, he has to have that hunger that top PROFESSIONAL players are supposed to have, he needs to feel responsible and reliable on the pitch. That aside, he has power, pace, and a different approach to the game that Liverpool can capitalize on. If he adds that to a level head, then he can fulfill his potential.

    ReplyDelete
  156.  more to the point can you name a few who haven't

    ReplyDelete
  157. Well said reds86, this is a very negative article and completely misconceived, it fails to consider any of the possible positive reasons why the club may have chosen to publicise such a point. 160. have you tried specsavers

    ReplyDelete
  161. I have no problem with what was said to Sturridge in public. I suspect many fans may agree with the sentiment. I suspect he believes that initially this is the best way to make sure Sturridge is hungry and starts quickly.

There seems to be many people ready to shoot BR down over his man management and that is their opinion. Fair enough. I like the way he tries to be positive most of the time, however, when he feels its called for he will have a go, and sometimes in public.

I would rather have someone positive managing Liverpool than someone negative and full of doom and gloom. Like I said, BR seems to be basically positive and supportive of his players, but on occasion, when he feels it's called for he will have a go.

BR makes his comments about players based on better and more informed information than any of us have. The players at the club - he sees day to day. New players brought in, he either knows them or speaks to people/coaches who do.

Sturridge could be an example of this last point. I heard that BR was not 100% convinced about Sturridge and so would not sanction a 15M bid in summer, hence the loan bid, which Sturridge did not want as he wanted a permanent exit from Chelsea. Since then, BR has allegedly spoken to some coaches who know Sturridge quite well as well as speaking at lengths with the player recently and the information he has got back may have triggered this bid.

I am still a little frustrated that we have paid 12M for a player who is arguably not wanted by his previous club, but then again I would also say that it is an improvement on the money sanctioned for previous deals in the Kenny-Comolli era like Downing etc. Lets hope we become better negotiaters. I fear we have been slam dunked with Sahin in that we can only cancel the loan if Sahin agrees (should be no problem here from what I hear) and Madrid agree (essentially we need to pay his wages or the portion we are paying for the whole season unless we can find another club for him to take it over).

I would prefer for us not to be hamstrung by our own actions through desperation of trying to bring certain players to the club. We need to be more patient and get ourselves a better deal than we have been getting recently. Newcastle's Mike Ashley has a saying "Buy cheap and sell steep" - in recent years we have being "Buying steep and selling cheap" and have made too many poor transfer choices for a number of years now.

    ReplyDelete
  162. No, he won't. Ten goals in EPL.

It's probably his last chance, and that was probably one of the reasons as well.

"He's got qualities, but if he wants to stay at the big level then this is probably his last chance. I've got every faith over his time here he'll prove a real hit and he gives us another attacking threat at the top end of the field."

    ***********************************
Jaimie, why the difference in your article? I got the above quotes in order as they are directly of LFC's official website. Why not paste it exactly how Rodgers said it?

If you mix and match BR's quotes then it will look like he is attacking Sturridge.
The point BR is trying to make is that Sturridge has the ability to succeed at LFC but if he fails then chances of him making it at another big club again will be nil and is the truth. That's telling Sturridge to pull his socks up from the word go and give it his all.We have to also remember that Sturridge comes from a dressing room with big ego's. This is not Chelsea Football Club. This Is Liverpool.

  175. I agree completely  with your comments Jaimie.Honestly BR and Gerard surprised me with that kind of attitude. What's about the performance of Joe Allen ? Till now I see nothing .BR has too much praise this player and now he is on the bench.Give Sturridge his chance ,let him explose and at the end of the season you can judge his performances.Do'nt fire at our

How does that work when you publicly criticize BR? In a way, I also wonder about BRs amateur psychology, but surely you have to change your tag line to "80% behind Rodgers."

In reality, DS knows what LFC paid for him and how much they're paying him, so I don't think that he will doubt their confidence in him. You're focusing a lot on small segments of publicly made comments, but I'm sorry, you have to take them in context.

I personally wouldn't have made those comments, but, even though I'm not 100% (or is that 80%) behind BR, I'm sufficiently impressed by him, to give him the benefit of the doubt in this matter. Let's wait and see.

Off topic, but the subject of Suarez's performance against Sunderland was raised, together with your lack of fawning praise. Knowing how you feel about Suarez, I'm not surprised, but I believe that he's doing more than he's being paid for right now and I hink it's time for you to welcome Suarez into your heart. The way that he stood up for the second goal, rather than going to ground, maybe evidence of a reformed character. Time for you to give him a break, methinks!

    Anyway, all the best Jaimie.

  180. My point exactly...he did the same with Stevie G's quote.

  181. Oh believe me!! I rarely come on this site as some people get upset when they don't like other peoples opinion. Then they get banned because they said the odd bad word. Meanwhile the you get your fair share of insults in. Like sycophants and idiots!!! The main problem here is you don't practise what you preach!!!!

  183. Let's hope he knows the difference between "your" and "you're".

  184. Every player is different ..... some need a pat on the back while another needs a kick up the backside .. Im sure Rogers has researched DS character .... Dont think SG made those comments without Rogers approval first . If DS feels under pressure because of those comments
then he is in trouble straight away. DS is at a crossroads in his football career , he has the experience and talent. This is his moment this is his time. DS motto has to be 'Don't count the days..Make the days count'

  185. Guess what - it's perfectly possible to support someone whilst also being critical when warranted.

  187. Noticed that already from some of your comments. At times you are fun to post with, at times you make sensible comments, but right now I get the feeling that you are in wind-up mode again.

  191. Why is this so difficult for people to understand?

    * I have focused on a specific section of BR's comments to make a specific point.

    * The rest of his quotes have absolutely no bearing on the issue, which is Rodgers giving Sturridge a public warning on the day he signed.

    * The press have seized upon BR/Gerrard's comments and almost every single news provider has run a story with a headline like 'Sturridge in last chance saloon at Anfield' (or variations thereof.

    * This is massive negative publicity for him, and it obviously adds to the pressure on him to perform. The fact is, if BR/Gerrard had made no public threat, the press wouldn't have run those stories.

    * The other quotes do not change the meaning of the warning quotes, and I do not make out that the quotes I use are the *only* quotes Rodgers made. There is even a link back to his original interview in the article.

There is a wider issue at stake here, and Rodgers's praise of Sturridge is absolutely irrelevant to the point I'm trying to make.

If my article was a reaction piece about the signing of Sturridge then I would've included all the quotes. It is not - it is about Rodgers and Gerrard making what I perceive to be a massive error of judgment with their very public Sturridge warnings.

  192. From what I have seen in more recent times it looks like Suarez has made an effort to stop going to ground as easily as he has done in the past. Whether he has realised himself or whether someone like BR (for e.g.) has had a word with him no matter. The end result has been fewer (if any recently) dives. However, it is important for Suarez to keep this up now.

His goal scoring has been very good so far this season and if he had been a tad more clinical at times (especially earlier in the season) then I would dread to think how many he would have already scored.

  193. Watson left us in his teens and has never made a first team appearance for us. Sheedy, well, all right, he's won stuff elsewhere and back then Everton were a bigger club than they are now.

  194. Its all getting a little to deep and a little to personal so im just trying to lighten it up a bit...

  195. I've looked it up, apparently bright people know how to spell and dull people spend a lot of time commenting on blogs. Hope that helps.

  196. Jaimie you are trying to split hairs!! If it all comes down to them saying what they said "on the day they signed" then would you have been ok if it were said the next day? Or the next week??? When, in your experienced footballing wisdom, is the right time to let a new signing know what the club is about and what they expect from them???? When Rogers blasted Sterling on TV for giving it the big un, did that mess him up or motivate him????
I am sure you wrote a few words about that incident.
