Good enough? LFC chase €11m "formidable goalscorer" to partner Suarez...

Due to excessive Agent demands, Liverpool's move for Chelsea striker Daniel Sturridge appears to be on the rocks at the moment, which for me, is definitely a good thing. There are better options out there, and if the deal ends up totally collapsing, the club reportedly has another option to fill the Reds' striker void.

According to a report in The Guardian:

"Liverpool will try to secure Kevin Gameiro on an initial six-month loan from Paris St-Germain should the [Sturridge] deal collapse".

The arrivals of Zlatan Ibrahimovic Ezequiel Lavezzi have relegated Gameiro to the sidelines at PSG, and with only four starts for the club this season, the 25-year old would probably welcome a loan deal in a bid to get first team football.

Despite his lack of pitch time, Gameiro - who cost PSG €11m in the summer of 2011 - has grabbed 4 goals in 4 starts for PSG this season, and his stats for the last three completed seasons are good, but not great:

* 50 goals/12 assists in 108 appearances.
* Goal every 2.1 games
* Goal/assist every 1.7 games

PSG coach Antoine Kombouare recently described Gamiero's qualities:

"Gameiro is strong mentally, and has great self-belief. He is able to make space for himself, but he is, above all, a formidable goalscorer, and is in the right place at the right time"

After Gamiero scored two goals against Sochaux in September, PSG boss Carlo Ancelotti publicly praised the striker. He said:

"Kevin Gameiro worked very well and had a fantastic match. It shows that he hasn't lost any confidence and he deserved to score his goals tonight".

When asked about the possibility of a move away from PSG, Gameiro seemed unfazed by his lack of regular first team football. He told RMC Radio:

"Everything can go fast in football but I'm Parisian and prepared to give everything for this shirt. I feel good in Paris and I want to stay for the moment".

The key phrase here appears to be 'for the moment', which suggests Gameiro is open to a move at some point. He certainly can't compete with Ibrahimovic (who can?), so a move would seem to be very much on the cards.

  1. We need to totally revamp our attacking options if we don't want to waste the next couple of years making neglible progress up the league.

    Over the last year we've let Bellamy, Carroll, Kuyt & Maxi go (and Cole & Downing are useless) with only Sterling and Assaidi as natural replacements. That should make it obvious why we are struggling so badly for goals.

    I want Ince and Sterling as backups to Suarez, Sturridge AND another pacey centre-forward, whether that is Gameiro or anybody else.

  2. what makes him a better option than sturridge?

  3. Dont know to much about the guy ...but his stats look good and a loan deal means we dont get screwed if hes not up to scratch can this guy play in a 433 system though as a wide man

  4. Just watched him on Youtube (I know, I know) and the majority of his goals on that video are scored on the break, a style we don't play... Saying that though he does look to be able to fashion a chance for himself, a la Suarez, and the goals weren't all tap-ins

  5. None of those have been what you would call a real goalscorer. The guy we need might not look brilliant all the time, but he needs the knack of scoring, and be able to fit into a fluid forward line. I like the look of this guy, confident finishes most of the time. In the absence of a Llorente / Villa type scoring machine, and if funds are not as available as we hope, i would take him on loan definitely. As you say, we need two, not one option

  6. I dont get the hate for Sturridge. Whenever he has been given a run of games his record has been up there with the best in the world, an we need goals. I dont care if he is selfish, we need that. Bores me to death watching us pass the ball round the box, and then taking so long there whole team is back.

  7. My first choice though would be Walcott

  8. His name is Kevin, what more of a reason do you need?

  9. I thought one of our major criticisms, most notably for the likes of Henderson and Downing was their lack of selfishness/confidence (or just quality) in the final third, but when it comes to signing a new young forward, possessing these attributes is a bad thing!?

  10. Walcott isnt. His record is far better than anything we have by miles. He would improve us, and Aresnal don`t want to lose him. He can play upfront or out wide. He is super fast, and the perfect fit for us imo

  11. But he ain't coming buddy, he ain't coming. I am a big big fan of Walcott.

  12. My point exactly, he record isn`t any better, he looks sluggish too imo. I would take Sturridge over him any day. People hate on Sturridge as hes English. When played he scores, which is his main role. I hate this sign a striker who can be great at defending stuff. No sign a striker who scores, alla Sturridge

  13. No thats why I said I think its good he is selfish

  14. Sadly I think your right. Which is a shame, as I think if we put a offer in we would have a chance.

  15. I also think He would improve us. We lack goals, he provides them. He isn`t as poor as people make out. Under AVB he was first choice at Chelsea. At Bolton he was awesome. He is still young, and will improve even more.

  16. Sorry if it wasn't clear - I was agreeing with your point Zanatos.
    It's everywhere else that I see ppl complaining about Sturridge's selfishness, or his 'bad attitude' as if they all personally know the guy...

  17. All cool bud :-) I agree I don`t get this bad attitude bit, off the pitch he seems fine, he wants to play, which is a good thing imo. I don`t want players at our club who look happy to be warming the bench. I want players who look angry and let down when there not playing. That to me is desire.

  18. I'd sign a striker who knows when to pass the ball to a better positioned team-mate. You sure Sturridge is capable of doing that?

  19. Reckon if you did a poll of lfc fans a huge majority would not want sturridge, none of my mates do

  20. Zantos others might hate on Sturridge because he is English i do not , I just don't think he is the best option avaliable. I think that Theo Walcott is a better performer who has enjoyed playing at the highest level from back in 2006 as a 17 year old representing his country in the World Cup in Germany. Walcott who is also English is a more "experienced" player than Sturridge. For me it's all about the experience. Feel free to look at our bench at any of our games and tell me how much depth we have and how much real experienced options we have.

    Nobody is happier that our kids are getting a first rate education under Brendon Rodgers but at the same time we have to actually take wining any kind of trophy this season seriously and that is not going to happen. NOT at least if we don't bring in experience. Don't care if it is by signing a couple of highly rated veteran campaigners or signing youngsters who have obtained their education from playing on the biggest teams with the biggest players at the biggest games. Signings like these will only lift the level of play of the rest of the squad.

    Sturridge is a good player and if his deal finally goes through i hope he proves me wrong. I just don't think that Sturridge would provide us with the cutting edge we need up front.

  21. Walcott is the kind of reject we actually need at Liverpool. He is seasoned from many seasons of playing in top competitions against the top clubs even though his team have not won a trophy in 7 years. Coming to Liverpool would actually be a step down in quality for him but beggars can't be choosers. I am sure that Liverpool would welcome him with open arms right now. He would be a wonderful partnership with Suarez.

  22. Really hard to judge Gameiro from just a goal compilation video on youtube but I have to say that he looks like a good player. Arsene Wenger shops regularly in the French League and for the most part he has done rather well. Right now i don't know what i think of him. I do not get too many chances to watch PSG to see Kevin Gamiero not playing due to the limited number of Ligue 1 games carried on Foxsoccer channel available in my area.

    I want him signed up if he possesses pace and can finish up chances.

  23. Cole, Downing, Pacheco OUT Sturridge, Ince, Gameiro (loan) IN looks like a good window to me! Lets hope for something similar to that...

  24. "he looks sluggish", not sure where you got that from. He seems worth getting on loan. He has a good scoring record and we need all the goals we can get.

  25. My standard questions is always this: what do you think is going on in Rodgers head? The man's obviously not an idiot and it stands to reason that he can see in Sturridge the same quality (or lack of) that we can. So what might Rodgers be thinking? The only conclusion I can come to is that he sees things that we don't. As fans we think we know the game but with Rodgers as a PL manager with plenty of years experience in the game, isn't it more likely that he knows more?

    ReplyDelete
  26. Rodgers sees things we don't? Do me a favour. Football isn't as complicated as you make out; it's not some dark art that only a select few are able to understand.

    If Rodgers knows more, how come all his transfers bar Allen have arguably been failures? Sahin is not cutting it; Assaidi is practically never in the team, let along the squad; Borini was flopping before he got injured (mainly due to Rodgers playing him out of position). If he knows so much more, why are LFC 12th in the league?

    ReplyDelete
  27. That sounds like 86% behind Rodgers & FSG, tops...

    ReplyDelete
  28. I still say the signing of Allen was a mistake. He still would've been available for £15m if we went back for him a year later.

    He's not such an upgrade over Aquilani, Henderson & Shelvey that we had to prioritise our transfer budget on him, when we had such a glaring deficiency of matchwinners.
