Michael Owen to Anfield? Liverpool fans give their emphatic verdict...

The problem is as simple as it is acute: Liverpool have failed to score any goals from open play in three Premier League games; Luis Suarez's finishing continues to be as poor as ever, and the club's midfielders look less likely to score than Pepe Reina. Goalscorers are needed, but since the transfer window is now closed, Liverpool are shit outta' luck. SOS Michael Owen?

On Saturday morning, Owen confirmed that he was only interested in playing in the Premier League, and yesterday, he indicated that a decision was near:

"Obviously can't tell you who I'm in talks with yet. I have an idea where I will go but you never know who else could enter the fray! I know who is interested but nothing will be done until next week".

Do Liverpool fans want him back at Anfield though? Yesterday, I conducted a poll on the site asking that question and the results were overwhelmingly clear:

* So far, 8200 people (approx) have participated.
* 62% of participants voted for a Michael Owen return.

That's a pretty emphatic result, and I'm sure if Owen has the chance to return to Liverpool he'll take it. After all, if it's a choice between LFC and Premier League relegation fodder, Liverpool will surely be the more attractive proposition...?

I would prefer Didier Drogba or Yakubu over Owen though. Both are still class strikers, he both were still playing at the top level until a few months ago. Admittedly, it would be a little surreal seeing Drogba in a Liverpool shirt, but what the hell.

Irrespective of LFC's problems, I sincerely hope that Andy Carroll is NOT recalled from his loan spell. He is not the answer; never has been, and never will be.

  1. Owen? No thank you. Much prefer Yakubu or Drogba.

  2. Missed this poll? Before the transfer deadline, I would probably have said no, but now. I think we need him. I think he would cost less than Drogba in terms of wages. But Dorgba would be welcome too. To be honest, anyone who can score more than 10 goals a season would be welcome right about now.....

  3. We had two whole months to buy our targets and now its come to this , and now is the time the fans need to stretch our patience .

    ReplyDelete
  4. Can Carroll be recalled?

    ReplyDelete
  5. We could never afford Drogba's wages even if he was open to a move to us.

    ReplyDelete
  6. Not a chance in hell. He's a rat and should be left rumaging through the bins for a new club.

    ReplyDelete
  7. Why not sign 2 strikers from the several available????. Surely we need them!!!

    ReplyDelete
  8. NOTHING WRONG WITH CAROLL WHO IS THE ANSWER CERTAINLY NOT ONE MAN BUT HE MORE DIRECT THAN WHATS THERE AT MOMENT I THINK HE GOT BRIGHT FUTURE

    ReplyDelete
  9. If Owen rocks up then I wont be attending any games this season.
Of the layers who are available on contract free basis only Anelka appals to me.
He is quick he's played for us before and he knows how to play in a 433 system.
Plus he's cheaper than Drogba, we got the best deal in Owen and he burned his bridges when he went.

  10. we`re relagation fodder Jaimie

    ReplyDelete
  11. Although I have never forgiven Owen for snubbing us when he went to Newcastle and for signing for the Mancs, he could be useful if he stays fit. If we could sign him on a pay as you play basis, I say go for it, at least he knows where the net is, unlike the current crop of forwards at our disposal. Oh, and get Drogba as well, if he's available

    ReplyDelete
  12. If we are considering Owen or Drogba then why not Michael Ballack! Still a free agent and only a year older than Drogba

    ReplyDelete
  13. Haha, good point. Right now, we're literally relegation fodder, but I doubt that will be the case come the end of the season.

    ReplyDelete
  14. We should get three free agent strikers. Why not? The wage bill has been cut big time over the last three months, so sign up Drogba, Yakubu and Anelka on big wages until January. It's only 4 months.

  15. I'm with you on this J-Rock. Sadly though, I can't help but feel that a Michael Owen-type of striker is what we'd need ahead of a Drogba-style centre-forward. Nippy, as opposed to predominantly 'brute force'.

To be fair, this might be 6-8 years too late, and Owen's legs are probably past it. But Owen was let go by United because he couldn't get regular football - not because he's injured.

But yeah, I'd still prefer Drogba over that little kn0b.

  16. I have no problem with Owen returning, but would question whether he would warrant his place in the team just to score goals? It is all very well having a natural goalscorer, but if that weakens the team (still further?!), we may be worse off.

    ReplyDelete
  17. I have no problem with Owen returning to LFC but we also need to give a chance to Morgan

    ReplyDelete
  18. I'm a big fan of AC too. Isn't it the fault of the players who lump the ball up to him? Anyway, as he's gone, and Drogba and Anelka look unlikely, we don't really have any choice but to get being the return of Owen.

    ReplyDelete
  19. He can finish no doubt - but he is tainted goods, there is enough disquiet on the terraces already, we don't need more disruption. Am I too proud to want him to pull on the shirt again? NO! do I think he can do a job? YES! I simply don't think he will come to us. Stoke or Sunderland can offer him more time on the pitch, and probably money too. Drogba won't come purely because of £££. I think Klasnic is a good option for 4 months. However I think we may be closer to a solution with what we have already. Change the bloody formation to suit the staff, not try and magic up players from nowhere to suit the formation!!
4-4-1-1 with Gerrard supporting Suarez. Morgan and Borini on the bench, Henderson on the pitch (despite what fans think he is a grafter).

I'll get slated by some for this comment - but our club is a mess and has been for years, we should all have expected something like this. By the way I am 100% behind Rogers, I don't know if FSG are in it for the right reasons anymore!

    ReplyDelete
  20. He's not a striker, as much as i bi"""ed abot Drogba, I'd be pretty happy to see him up front. Still goals there

    ReplyDelete
  21. That's what I thought as well. Maybe with no one else willing to match his salary, we might have a chance should he lower his expectations. I doubt it though. Most probably, a filthy rich Russian or Arab club will come in for him.

  22. everyone makes mistakes, for the passion of trophy and glory everyone has stepped out then y are we blaming Michael Owen was it not Rafeal Bentiez who let him go by buying other strikers??? anyways no point in digging the grave, but if Owen scores 10 goals and makes us win 8 matches out of 10 starts he gets, there is no kopite in the world who wudnt forgive him...afterall if a person saves us from blushes will be honoured thts wht true kopites does and thts wht we will do :) We are right behing Michael Owen :) Come score and win with us, YOU WILL NEVER WALK ALONE at ANFIELD :)

  23. It's a bit like like your girlfriend running off with your worst enemy, and when he doesn't need her anymore she comes running back. Bitter pill to swallow. On that note. i would take him back and hope to god he can put a few in the back of the net. Quite frankly this last week of the transfer window has taken its toll me. Need another drink.

    ReplyDelete
  24. To bring back owen would be a very sad thing what has he done since he left drogba definitly a yes.

    ReplyDelete
  25. we need new owners lfc will always be outside top four under fsg need a rich fan to buy club rather see sir paul mac cilla black kenn dodd in owners box than j henry already stabbed rodgers in back sell to buy then nothing

    ReplyDelete
  26. But yakubu is signed for a china football team.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Owen's net is where his race horses are. I would never trust a player who has sold his soul to a Devil. We don't need Owen.

    ReplyDelete
  28. I agree JK. But never Owen.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Not a striker, but like Dempsey he is an attcking mid with an undeniable eye for goal

    ReplyDelete
  30. Agree with the GF thingy. But when she has menopaused? Nobody wants her.

    ReplyDelete
  31. We could quite realistically have 1/21 points after our next few games. We will most definatley be invloved in the scrap unless we start winning games a.s.a.p!!

    ReplyDelete
  32. I am relieved that 8200 people are not the general consensus!!
Adding Owen at this time only highlights our failures and compounds the misery on the supporters!

    ReplyDelete
  33. Sinama Pongolle is just available.. he is faster, less injury prone, and can play on the wings so why do we keep ranting on bringing back a traitor

    ReplyDelete
  34. much, much much rather get relegated. much.

    ReplyDelete
  35. As long as someone can put the ball in the net, I don't mind but LFC have to look at the man that is leaving the ball into the LFC net; its time to drop Reina!

    ReplyDelete
  36. yeah, man u is also in red, it was ok to score for them...

    ReplyDelete
  37. My Heart says Michael Owen, Drogba would be great! Yakubu powerful... always been an admirer. Pongol seems viable, young too!

If we could get 2 of these guys?

on another note... this year should perhaps be a grace year fans should give to the manager, the players and the club. Realistically, Top 4 looks a long way off, but next year we should definitely be challenging for top honors. I've been chatting to fans from other clubs and they are actually envious of us due to the talents and the structures that have been set (Shelvey, Sterling, BR young manager etc.)

I'm Really disappointed about the resul yesterday. everyone is going on about Steve Gerrad's mistake, but Pepe Reina was atrocious for me yesterday. He needs to be dropped!

    ReplyDelete
  38. i would rather have drogba than owen!!! drogba is a goal scorer owen is a crippled bench warmer!!!! we are trying to save money and not sign anyone to sit on the bench

    ReplyDelete
  39. owen even drogba utd and chelsea pensioners what next keegan t oshack we missed the boat long time to january need bigger capacity at anfield too far behind top 4 in gate money and champ league what must king kenny think he got the budget but no time rodgers the time no money what next worst start in 50 years lfc fans care about lfc not balance sheets

    ReplyDelete
  40. Owen is a spent force. Adam Morgan and Semi Yesil would do better. Andy Carroll now seems a luxury.

Jamie, lets hope Liverpool are above WestHam on Christmas, so you dont have to eat your words!

    ReplyDelete
  41. Surely we can't go so low that we "need" Owen back...I'll rather finish in bottom half than see Owen play for us again, he is Utd scum now and should be treated accordingly!

Reina is worrying me most, has not been good enough since Rafa left, we should've taken the 20 million offered by Arsenal last year...get Butland in January!

Would be great if the owners can "agree" that because they stuffed up, they would back Rodgers to go for a star like Falcoa or Cavani in January...

    ReplyDelete
  42. Absolutely agree with you, with the savings we've made surely we can afford the wages of these 3 free agents.

    ReplyDelete
  43. I dont know about Owen, but we need to take risk, play our youngsters !!

But what i want to say is, Reina has been really poor , whats wrong with using Jones sometimes ? Look at Manutd and Arsenal, they are brave, they always change goalkeeper for some games.

    ReplyDelete
  44. To the fans moaning about Owen: Beggers can't be choosers!
Owen would definitely better than nothing.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Even more surreal seeing Owen in a Liverpool shirt .

    ReplyDelete
  46. We're too good to go down....

@Copyright: Bolton, Newcastle, Leeds, Forest ad nauseum.

    ReplyDelete
  47. I don't think we should bring in another striker, we obviously don't need one....short term thinking, im all for the long term plan where things get worse....

  48. Getting new owners is almost as tough as getting new parents - love them or hate them, you're stuck with them. A small minority of us (less than 1%) are fortunate enough to be adopted by billionaire parents, but the rest of us need to settle for what we've got. The more we cry out for some oil rich billionaire to buy us, the more we sounds like little rich spoiled kids.

Let's get behind the owners; the more we protest the ownership, the more it reflects on the pitch. I've said this before - these guys are saints compared to the Gillett/Hicks and the Glazers - agreed they've made some mistakes, including this transfer window (which was also in part BR's fault - who I'm still 100% behind), but I'll take a few growing pains for long term success and zero debt. And besides, who can blame them for wanting to run the club like a proper sports business - If I spent 300M of my own money on a club, I would want to make sure that the money is spent properly. Unless of course, some one else on this forum has 300M to buy this club, then by all means buy away and spend away - either way, I'll still be supporting this club.

  49. Listen to you all...2 Cup finals in a season without 2 best players for much of it and Lucas for the whole and you bayed for the managers blood. Before that a manager who was in 2 CHampions league finals out of 5 and you bayed for his blood after one hiccup season. Be careful what you wish for...soon this one will be gone and you'll have Roy Keane in to escort you into the championship. Why do you never ever enjoy some success and build..always want more but result is you are getting less and less. I love Liverpool, but can't support this new club... FSG Disunited...."We are not in this for profit" but nothing matters other than 4th place?

    ReplyDelete
  50. Terrible state to get into, its the owners fault. Theres no doubt that Rodgers was instructed to reduce the wage bill. The owners need to stand up and be counted not issue apologies for their errors. Afterall they are supposed to be experienced businessmen.

    ReplyDelete
  51. Bring no-one, just give the youth a chance. Or play like Spain instead... with more attacking midfielders. At least, we will earn some draws at best. One point is better than a defeat at home.

    ReplyDelete
  52. So, what if we do get Owen and he doesn't score any goals? This lack of goals malarkey would have been solved last year with the money from the Torres sale. Thanks to KD and Comolli it was a missed opportunity. Unless anybody out there thinks that buying a donkey with a peg leg was an inspired transfer deal.

    ReplyDelete
  53. Bringing owen back will be a monumental mistake .....he garbage and has been for some time .....the defenders in the prem will chew him up and spit him out ....his game was built on pace which he hasnt had for years ....no infact go out and get him then i can take the rip out of all the idiots on this site who said buy him .....no pace ,injury prone, judas need i go on

    ReplyDelete
  54. Being a newcastle fan i hope you dont get owen he sat on the side lines for us and picked up his massive wages and looking in for the outside am i right to say it looks like you have no money to spend not surprising when kenny dalglish spend around 70million on 3 player 2 that sit on the bench and one loaned out so that also rules drogba out his wages will cripple you. Now i heard brendan rodgers was moaning about not having any money to spend again my opinion he would have money if he didnt spend 15million on Joe Allen who lets be honest isnt a liverpool standard player or a 15million pound player, all he does is pass sideways. and one more point now you know how pissed of newcastle fans feel when the club cocks up transfers and only leaves 2 senior forwards in the club. The good news is tottenham and arguably arsenal are in similar positions with the lack of numbers so i think the league positions will come down to who keeps there best starting 11 on the pitch the longest =).

    ReplyDelete
  55. I don't see the point in bringing Owen back, if Dempsey wasn't the answer then neither is Owen or any 30+ free transfer. We are in transition, we are most definitely not going to be in the Champions League any time soon so, it's time to allow a few youngsters the chance. The club made an almighty cock up yet again showing the incompetence and inexperience of the board but we can address it in January maybe, meanwhile let's blood a few more kids.

    ReplyDelete
  56. it will be hilariousness personified if we get owen ...an injury prone has been ...who puts himself before anyone

    ReplyDelete
  57. people saying we should sign three of the free guys available...wage demands...lets assume they are all generous and would sign for a measley 80,000 a week, lets assume they take contracts just till january...3 X 80,000 = 240,000 per week, x 4 = 960,000 pounds a month for three contracts. over the course of the four months till january would be £3.84 million. not including signing on fees which are so damn popular at the moment, lets round it to £5 mill, still a very conservative estimate in my opinion.

given we are skint as trousers would you consider signing three strikers on temp wasting £5 mill that could go towards buying a proper player come january? and realistically would they take 4 month contracts? more to the point would three ageing strikers be adequate? i think not.

anelka is potentially the best of a sh*t bunch, maybe a cheeky try at sinama pongolle as cover for the wings, but no matter what we're spending more money than if we'd jus stumped up for dempsey.

FSG have just cut the red sox wage bill massivley aswell, they are in financial difficulty, and either us or the red sox will be sold. and in case you wondered fsg doesnt stand for "Anfield Sports Group".

    ReplyDelete
  58. Actually that one is wrong. Rafa had no choice. Owen was not going to sign a new contract. He was on his last year so had to sell him on the cheap.

That said. We need someone who can score and so far this is the best option we have

    ReplyDelete
  59. Rafa forced him out you idiot!

    ReplyDelete
  60. guarantee no signings, thats a complete smokescreen, shops shut!! Mediocrity until the team starts to gel. We will be using youth from here on in,we're the new Swansea.

    ReplyDelete
  61. Three games into the season and you are talking of relegation! What a supporter !!!

    ReplyDelete
  62. breakin news .liverpool to sign micheal owen as soonas they can get the delorean to hit 88mph !!

    ReplyDelete
  63. I hear Sinama-Pongolle is a free agent, might be worth bringing him back. Wouldn't mind it if we signed Owen on a one year deal, but this is a very embarrassing mess FSG have put us in. Allowing Carroll to go on loan and then refusing to cough up £6m for Dempsey.

Another thing that pisses me off is the fact that Brendan Rodgers doesn't seem aware of Dani Pacheco's existence. He is better than Morgan, give him a go.

    ReplyDelete
  64. I'm pretty sure BR farmed Pacheco out to Valladolid, the loon....

    :(

    ReplyDelete
  65. What is the panic , we have three new players, plus our own home grown kids who are as good as anyhting that is going for free ok they young but they have to start somewhere why not the first team BR need time to get thing going we will have many games that we will lose time we started to say we are liverpool we will survive this,
YNWA means a lot so get behind BR give him your surport

    ReplyDelete
  66. Rodgers is a clueless clown wen r people gona wake up n realise es not got a clue?lfc r a laughin. Stock wiv him in charge feel sorry for fans who pay to watch a once top team end up in relegation battle n seasons only just begun?rodgers is a young version of hodgson n e was useless as well.

    ReplyDelete
  67. I'm a Swansea Fan & not lookin to gloat but I think you guys are there for the taking under Rodgers & knew you would be, swans have landed on there feet moving Rodgers on first of all the plus 20 mill we've had by getting rid & look at us go already since he left, I think swans scored the fewest amount of goals last year & already scored 10 in 3 under lundrup..

Swans took a big gamble on Rodgers built him up & he left us high & dry. The big difference between us signing Rodgers is we had a coach who was suited to our team & philosophy, Liverpool now have a coach who thinks one way with a squad who thinks another way = disaster.

You guys have signed nothing but a big phat Lier of a coach who only knows one way to play the sport & it's not the best either I think your in for a battle sorry guys..
