'He has many qualities!' - Wenger reveals he tried to sign 'tricky' LFC star...

Liverpool winger Raheem Sterling is attracting a lot of positive attention at the moment, and after his excellent performance against Manchester City last week, Reds fans will be hoping that the youngster plays some part in the Arsenal game tomorrow. Arsene Wenger is also a fan of Sterling, and he revealed yesterday that he once considered trying to sign the 17-year old.

In his weekly press conference yesterday, Wenger described Sterling as 'lively, tricky and quick', and praised the winger's 'many qualities'. The Arsenal manager was also asked if he's ever considered buying Sterling, to which he responded:

"Yes, we know him from when he played against our reserve team; I watched him, and he was good, but once the players are at their clubs, you don't try and destabilise them at the age of 17".

Admirable sentiments from Wenger, but who knows what will happen in a few years? If Sterling progresses at the right pace then clubs like Arsenal and Spurs will almost definitely be in for him again at some point.

In the meantime, Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has relegated Stewart Downing to the left-back position, and that's a testament to Sterling's exciting potential, and must mean that the youngster can look forward to increased first-team opportunities this season, which can only be a good thing.

  1. Lets start worrying about what might happen in a few years time. That sounds like fun!!!!!

  2. But he easily knock down by others

  3. spurs can't seem to scout for themselves. i'm sure they watch sky sports news or just read the football gossip pages, to see who is being linked to who, then they go with those mentioned. if we said we fancied signing ian rush, you bet your ar*e they would be involved in trying to sign him! it actually isn't sour grapes at all, they have bought well, i have a feeling that they don't really want all the players they go for...a bit like football ebay... once you put a bid in to try to stop others...you are then stuck with it! hahahahahaha (by the way, i didn't want dempsey anyway, another adam syndrome, big fish in little pool).

  4. There's been a lot of recent talk about Sterling becoming a legend at Liverpool but I'm afraid the only people who will see him as a legend will be the ones who pocket the many millions his future transfer will generate.

For all I am grateful to FSG for rescuing Liverpool when they did, I feel that they are out of their depth and don't quite realise what it takes to own a championship winning football club. Sure, we might get back into the champions league and generate a ton of cash but to actually win the league? Sorry, I have my doubts.

The talk yesterday was of Huntelaar & Damiao coming. Yes, they would have cost a small fortune but the benefits would have been enormous. And as much as I love the man, Kenny wasted far too much money on poor signings last season and Brendan is paying for that frivolity now.

Hopefully, come January, the owners will see what's needed - someone who can score goals for fun, two would be better. Can you imagine if we had a front 3 of Suarez, Huntelaar & Damiao?
Let's hope Borini finds his scoring boots soon and Morgan calms down a wee bit, his instinct for goal is good but, at times, I though he was being over eager and gave away too many silly fouls.

  5. Dont Destabilize them at the age of 17? He did that to everyone like Walcott, Fabregas, Oxlade etc. what was Wenger saying?

  6. Get Michael Owen!!
    Can BR get Michael Owen!!!
    Get Michael OOOOOOWEEEEEN!!!
    You Better Get Michael OWeN!!

  7. Its interesting that you state that Downing has been "relegated" to left back. Why do you consider playing left back (with a lot of license to get forward) as a lesser position than playing left midfield? I think it is to Downing's credit that Rodgers considers him versatile and responsible enough to perform in the left back position - although this is of course a position that he has played in the past with other clubs anyway.

  8. a last minute bid of 37 million was rejected by west ham for their forward andy carroll late late nite .breakin news liverpool confirm signing of jack shitt. !!!!!!!! micheal ? why not pay as u play . forgive and forget we need another forward !!

  9. Can we get Michael Owen pls, he is free agent and he still can do business

  10. I thought Downing played quite well at LB tbh, better distribution than that Enrique dud, who couldn't pass the ball if he was highly paid to do so....

As for Sterling yet again i say his test will managing expectations and it really doesn't help when certain fans are loading on the pressure by pouring constant praise over the guy, he's still a kid and we shouldn't be hoping that he is the immediate answer, he isn't and he shouldn't be....

    ReplyDelete
  11. It's not a lesser position. The point is that if you're a left-winger, and you're deemed not good enough for that role to the extent that the manager prefers a 17-year old in your place, it's arguably a relegation.

    ReplyDelete
  12. You have got to give him a break. He is only 17. Let him have a few pre seasons under him and allow him to grow. He will get a lot stronger.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Yep, that bit from Wenger was funny

  14. Owen should pay Liverpool to play for them!

  15. "maybe i'll never win the league now" says Stevie G

Knowing the jinx that Stevie is, maybe we'll win the title after all this season ;)

  16. he might . but the fact is we need another forward

  17. what has gone on with doni is he still with us??? if so we need to play him. if not brad jones

  18. I think we need clarity on what happened yesterday as there are replorts claiming FSG blocked the move for Dempsey, if thats the case they need to look at themselves and feel ashamed as they have hung us out to dry, i appreciate what they have done for us in the past but if there not prepared to let us challenge for players that will hopefully help us progress as a team and become genuine contenders again then they needto step aside and let ambitious owners in!

  19. Wrong headline: Wenger says he did not try to sign Sterling. Never let a fact get in the way of your story.

  20. If ever a player in the premier league deserved a medal its Stevie i would hold no grudges if he left for Chelsea or Man City to earn one.

    ReplyDelete
  21. As he will never get one at our club were years away unfortunately

    ReplyDelete
  22. But seriously...m sure he's VERY dissapointed about it, i would be, a player of that quality who IF he had played for Manu would have won a whole bunch of titles....is better than Carrick Fletcher etc, has to watch Lampard picking up league trophies....

I'd be gutted if i was in his shoes, complete and utter waste of a great talent.

I've been saying for these years that Stevie should have left this club years ago, his loyalty has been his downfall, even Mourinho said as much.....

This is going to be a very difficult season for him, the way this club and certain sections of the fanbase have treated him has been shocking, no wonder we are where we are, we should have bought another quality striker in this window to replace what we have let go.....

That HAS to be a major dissapointment for him, can't see him wanting to see out his contract now this has happened, which wil of course be great news for his army of LFC critics....

    Sad.

    ReplyDelete
  23. We should do the right thing and offer him to Man City or Chelsea on a season loan, we have failed the greatest midfielder the premier league has ever seen for years with false promises its truly saddening that he could end his career with no premier league title medal

  24. Believe me or not, FSG are crooked. They have been making losses after losses in their core business of Finance/Hedge Funds. They have divested around $250mn from Red Sox and also reduced wage bill from LFC. Owners combined value was $1.5bn before this tragedy. They are not at all rich and simply can't compete. If Arsenal bid 20mn for Sterling, they will let him go. Same thing happened with Agger, luckily no one bided 20mn for him though. Its De Ja Vu for us...same old yankies...same old. Boston Red Sox fans are already calling for owners head....they have diminished their Baseball team by selling top players to reduce wage bill and recoup their investments. They will now have to satisfy both the clubs...cant see it happening soon.

  25. And Carroll helps West Ham to score their first goal in the first minute of the game.....

Go Carroll, you show them mate.

    ReplyDelete
  26. I see your point of view, but maybe the manager was simply looking to the squad to fill a gap left by injuries to other players. He could have played other players in the left back position to cover for Enrique who have already played there for the club (such as Johnson or Robinson) but decided to go with Downing which I think is a strong indication of how highly the manger rates and trusts Downing.

The side affect of this is the opportunity being given to the 17 year old to fill the gap left by Downing and to be fair to Sterling, it certainly seems like he is doing everything right to keep the position to himself. Sterling seems to be quite an exceptional talent for a 17 year old but the manager clearly does not see him as a versatile enough player at this point in time to offer him role in different positions so in order for the manager to accommodate him and aid in the players development, Downing needed to vacate that position....

...who knows what really happens behind closed doors.

  27. Long ball tactics involving Carroll already working well for Hammers

    ReplyDelete
  28. Absolutely agree with that 100%, truly saddening that he cannot be appreciated at this Club, we are a joke.

    fSG should

    FSG

    ReplyDelete
  29. Would rather have had him on the bench, instead of having no third striker at all (not counting puppy Morgan just yet). West Ham is a good and better fit for him. Always thought he would make a good mid-table striker, especially in a direct side.

    ReplyDelete
  30. I think he was arguably Englands best striking option in the Euro's....outshone Rooney....

Much better than a mid table player mate, just you wait and see....remember he's still got plenty of time to shine.....

Plenty of potential there IMO, time will tell eh...?

Big mistake sending him out on loan, any injuries and we are well and truly fcuked....

    2-0 to the Hammers...

    ReplyDelete
  31. Now 3-0 to the Hammers....

  32. Evryone outshone rooney mate, it was no coincidence we played awful the second he returned to the team, as when he is on the pitch it seems they are ordered to make him the focal point of everything, and he just aint up to it, they play better when he is not there

    ReplyDelete
  33. We should have gotten Diame on free, he is excellent.

Oh and yeah im done defending FSG. I defended them when others criticised but now they have crossed their limits.
I just calculated how much they have spent and if you count wages, they have a net expense of 7.4 million pounds. Absolutely disgraceful.

    ReplyDelete
  34. The standard was hardly high in the England camp in terms of performances, he only started one game and when I see a guy whose main ability is his aerial prowess lose two headers to Pirlo, I am not going to get excited by him that is for sure, on the basis of his Euros (but I guess compared to the majority of his Liverpool career, he had a fantastic Euros....).

To date, seen nothing to illustrate that he is more than a mid-table player, in terms of his performances. Maybe that will change in the future (he could easily reach the lofty heights of fellow physical striker Kevin Davies, who funnily reignited his career under Big Sam) but rather base him on what he has actually done, which is very little for all the initial hype and money.

That aside, I think he will be very effective under Big Sam, just like Davies was, and maybe help get them into the Europa this season or the next.

  35. If you don't mind, what was their net spend before this summer transfer window just gone? (from the moment they came in till before 2012 summer transfer window)

    ReplyDelete
  36. there were many players that were released so i would think it will be around 20 million if you count wages. However, the 7.4 million is quite authentic. Oh and we are still paying aqua and Bellamy 50k& 25K

    ReplyDelete
  37. I was looking for a more exact figure but thanks anyway.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Oh and the 20 million is from our own sponsor money too, not owner pockets.
And sorry cant give exact money because of lack of info about youth players that were released

    ReplyDelete
  39. I cant agree their net spend is just £7.4 million, as other then Torres we have had no sizeable transfer fee recieved. I am not a maths expert but when we have paid over the odds for a lot of players and spend near on £30 million this summer and havent recieved anything of note back i do find it hard to believe the net spend is £7.4 million

    ReplyDelete
  40. No, no i am taliking about this window, this window.

    Buy: Borini(10m/40k), Allen(15m/45k), Assaidi(3m/21k), Sahin(2m loan fee/70k) and Yesil(1m/15k).

    Sell: Aurelio(free/40k), Kuyt(1m/80k), Maxi(undisclosed[2m]/80k), Aquilani(3.2m/50k), Bellamy(free/15k), Spearing(loan/20k), Carroll(2m loan fee/80k), Ecceleston(500k/15k), Adam(4m/50k).

The Net spend is appr. 7.5million.

    ReplyDelete
  41. ah ok :)
    i understand now

    ReplyDelete
  42. aquilani was on 90000k a week wages and bellamy was also amongst the top earners

  43. Something I don't quite understand is when owners splurged 35 on AC, 20 on SD, 20 on JH and 7 on CA, none of us are complaining. I think all of us know that FSG will not turn LFC into Chelski or Mansour City the very moment they bought LFC. They have done their best in their capacity, at least from what I can see. The outcome of their initial investment was catastrophic because they made the utmost mistake in appointing the 2 most unworthy candidates for the manager and DOF job. There's a price to pay for every failure or mistake. We are now into the rebuilding phase after last season, not immediately challenge for top 4 position in EPL! Right now, BR is only suffering the consequences from the most idiotic spending spree in history of football. Of course, he is not perfect in his transfer decisions, but shouldn't we give our support to him? Oh yeah! The Anfield spirit, YNWA! Of course BR is not walking alone, 2 league games into the season and so many of us are after his arse and calling for his head. Can we fans here just shut the traps up and get behind LFC and BR for the new season???

    ReplyDelete
  44. Agreed - give him a break - the kid has barely reached puberty!

    ReplyDelete
  45. Agreed that the owners saved LFC from desparity, but it takes more than money to convince big players like huntelaar to come to anfield at this point in our rebuilding stage. That's why we've only been able to recruit young players. this window.

  46. NEVER.
    First, he's not good enough.
Second, He's not loyal to the club, and have been disrespectful throughout the yers.
Third, he became a mercenary ages ago. No way.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Calm down everyone please! This whole "Transfer Deadline Day" panic has only became a recent thing, hyped up by SKY etc. 3-4 years ago it never happened (tweeting and all that crap ain't helped) You never heard of Sir AF rushing! Old blue nose knows. I think Sir Brendon has done really well considering. He's not been phased and he has shown real restraint and forethought, unlike KK! Surin is a major coup and none of you seem to remember that! It's only been a week since he arrived. Goals will come from midfield this season. Brendons restraint will allow him to pick up a form player in January, mid season, mid table and a final push. Dempsey would of never been a long term option.

  50. what is going on, i thought liverpool supporters had a bit of sense, they do in ireland anyway. alrite alrite calm down calm down if ya get me drift. most of the comments on here being negative aren't from liverpool supporters if ya cant spot the mancs (who are still obsessed with us for some reason) then bye bye cherioo cherioo. BR is awesome if ya cant see that the write a letter to arsene wenger and he will reply fook off (whatever the french is for fook of anyway). The lack of respect some liverpool supporters are showing astounds me. Kenny spent 80 million on crap and paid big wages to boot. shelvy is better than Henderson. Nuff said that shows what kenny cudnt see.we all know about the 35 trunk in the room. We paid 20 million for Dowing Utd paid 16 million for Young (Who got the better deal?). Rogers is paying for Kenny's mistakes, give him time please, 3 matches aint enough to make someone walk the plank. Staunch believe on a way of playing football wins my vote any day over spending money on a load of shite that cant pass a ball 10 yards. i love kenny to bits but he fucked up big time with the biggest budget any manager has had. Br is paying the price but is already playing better football (without the end product it must be said but give him a season at least!). 15 million for allen compared to 16 million for henderson, go figure!! shelvey already there compared to 7 million for adam, go figure. thats 8 million wasted not even counting wages which is prob about another 10 million. thats 18 million on non starters alone which is not a lot compared to some budgets but coupled with 6 million a year for joe cole, 6 million a year for aqua man plus the 17 million paid for him and ya see how directionless it has all become. Leave br alone, give hime support and sit back and enjoy the ride. Otherwise stop posting as a manc in disguise and worry about your own club. YNWA FOR LIFE that means through thick and thin. some cubs have a lot to learn!!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  51. Well, obviously not on Enam10's football manager game.

    ReplyDelete
  52. You seem to be very much in the know. How about considering a big pay-off for Kenny, who's had only the best for the club in mind. That must be another 7m.

    ReplyDelete
  53. Well, Matt LeTissier, too, chose to stay with his home-town club, winning nothing, instead of moving to a more competitive club. His choice, as it was Gerrard's choice. So, you claim, more or less, that SG would have won stuff at ManU, completely ignoring the fact that many fellow Reds criticize Michael Owen for leaving in order to win some league titles. What if SG did that, too?
