Michael Owen claims: 'Two big European teams' are interested. Come to LFC...?

Liverpool's abject failure to sign a striker during the transfer window has left the club in precarious position up front, but in a fit of desperation, could Brendan Rodgers be persuaded to bring in Michael Owen on a pay-as-you-play deal?

Prior to yesterday's transfer window fiasco, Owen tweeted the following:

"Final day of the transfer window and I'm likely to play a part in it!"

Owen didn't end up moving anywhere, and as a free Agent, he's can join any Premier League club without restriction. Earlier today, Owen added:

"I had two big European teams show an interest yesterday but my priority still remains to play in the Prem. We will see how the day pans out. Nothing to confirm just yet, will be an interesting few days now that the transfer window is closed".

Should Liverpool think about bringing Owen in as a back-up Striker? I personally don't think it would be a good idea:

* It would smack of major desperation on Liverpool's part.

* Owen's injury history means he'd probably spend most of his time on the treatment table.

* It would be symbolic of taking a giant step backwards, and Liverpool don't need that right now.

However, I know there are fans out there who would love to see Owen back, irrespective of the fact his last club was Manchester United. Bringing him back is an undeniably romantic idea, but is it a good idea?

  2. Reports are saying Drogba was released from his contract. Possibly go after him? who knows but i think if we got Drogba it would be great.IMO he is easily in the top five in terms of best strikers to play this decade..

  3. drogba and anelka are also available. i think owens poor injury record and lack of consistent matches in so long means theres little point signing him, but if liverpool could break the bank in terms of wages for just 1 season, they should sign at least anelka (who is more realistic in wanting to join than drogba). lets face it they should have enough salary budget having got rid of a few, coupled with the fact that the new signings arent on mega money. we just need soemone for the short term to propel us into the top four.

  4. Owen is only interested in PL because of his race horses. Big bucks to be made while owning race horses and having insight and first hand info on games.
No thanks to Owen. We do not want a player who left the club and later played for manure. Not welcomed.
Anyways he is way past his prime.

  6. It is a desperate time..going into the season with 2 strikers only, with carling cup, fa cup, europa league, premier league all to play and considering we scored less goals than BlackBurn last year is suicidal. Man U did it with scholes n it almost got them the title last year..Did they go backwards ? yes. Did it help? Hell yes. Desperate times need desperate measures..

  8. I think a giant step backwards is our net spend in this window....

Left ourselves rather short up front hav'nt we..?

Only got ourselves to blame for this little fcuk up and IF Owen can be persuaded to return then i'd be very happy to see him back at the Club, matters not if he gets injured if he's on pay as you play...

Its a no brainer, get him in and get him back in a Red shirt. Desperate? Nah, just a sensible solution to a desperate situation....

  9. If his fitness wasn't an issue then i think it would have been good idea but his fitness record in recent years has been really bad so IMO Liverpool are better off using Pacheco and Morgan as backup instead of buying him. Though i am not against the idea, if manager is really looking into bringing him back.

  10. Drogba - holds up the ball, scores goals, plays more than he misses

  11. why are you lot looking to add players who would be costing an arm and a leg just to sit on the bench Anelka would be the perfect match for what we want as he can play wide as well as the lead striker knows what the club has to offer and would be a better fit than the other two but at £100k a week it makes no sense unless he plays every game which isn going to happen so leave these big name players and use what we have at the club Morgan should be given his chance now and it makes sense now why 1m was paid out for a kid striker that will allow Morgan to move into the first team if he is a success he saves us Millions if not then he has been in the shop window and could bring in a few million to add to the pot for a Striker its simple this season has been written off already its about clearing the decs and bringing in the managers players next summer will see us in a perfect potion to make a good charge on the title with another 3 or 4 players in by then

  12. Drogba's management team has denied those reports and even if available he would have other suitors than LFC. I would take Owen but most likely he would be looking for at least a 2 year deal.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Thinking with head moreso than heart, if he's free then why not? knows where the net is.
Just as happy for Anelka - another good footballer who can finish

  14. i have also read that...its true he probably would sign for us nor any other prem side..hes a chelsea man..i think madrid will sign him as he wants to probably win another CL title

  15. The more I think about this dempsey thing the more I think that the owners may of thought exactly what I thought of two days ago. That with all our midfield players and buying allen why the heck are we spending on the turkish geezer up to 7 mil when we needed a striker. Maybe they looked at things and thought BR was a muppet.

  16. The point being discussed is whether or not we would want Owen back on a pay as you play.....

Its not about who else we can add to the squad, its about Michael Owen specifically....

And as you say this season has been written off already...so what harm could it do us...?

    Low expectations = Low ambition...

    ReplyDelete
  17. Under the (farcical) circumstances, and with much reluctance, it makes sense, but only on a pay-as-you-play basis. Ideally any agreement would only last through January, at which point you would hope we will get our act together in regards a longer term solution. However, given Owen's delusions of grandeur, arrogance (and, dare I say, greed), he will likely push for a two-year contract on silly money. I agree this is somewhat desperate, but we are stuck between a rock and a hard place. I am still in a mild state of shock that we find ourselves in this position...Mr Ayre, in my humble opinion, is not the right guy when it comes to transfer negotiations...this requires a separate conversation...
Anyway, Owen would fall within the 'Cover' category which may mitigate his appalling injury record. In a footballing capacity, Owen is a clever player that would be able to quickly fit into our new system. He also knows where the net is...

On the other hand, if it is indeed true that Drogba and Anelka are viable options (I am in the dark here--will research), then they would represent better (short-term) options, assuming they would be interested in this type of arrangement. I doubt Drogba would go for it (given his Chelski allegiance), but Anelka is a possibility.
How did it come to this?

  18. If these reports are true, then its worth a try going for him or Anelka and failing these 2, Ryan Babel is also a free agent. These 3 are less of an injury concern than Owen but then again Babel did not do well for us first time around.

  19. I think our situation has become so desperate that we should if we have the finances in place. I know its pathetic. But we dont have an out and out goal scorer. players like Owen could fill in in cup comps to protect others players. Any injuries to critixal players will leave us up the proverbial creek. I never thought we hit a point this low. But, im afraid my answers yes.

  20. owen is garbage ....end of .....hes finished

  21. if anelka is available he would be a good short term fix very good goal scoring record .But how stupit to let ur self in this situtation in the first place

    ReplyDelete
  22. So we didn't get a 29 year old from Fulham, so what. This is becomg boring, can we move on.

Daglish signed a shed load of players for over £100M last summer and look where that got us. Have a little faith.

    ReplyDelete
  23. I think the main reason is that they want BR to know who is actually in charge. My theory is that, the reason they sacked KD was because he insisted on bringing players of his choice rather then players brought in by DC who was not wanted by Chelsea for all the stupid buys he made.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Anelka would defo want to come to Liverpool but this is a stroke of luck, the other two are possibilities but Anelka would do for me!!!!

  25. I cant believe what happened yesterday.... after all the owners have said in the past that they would listen to the fans etc.. We were screaming out for a decent striker in january that we didn't get and now we have got rid of a lot of our attacking first team options....Kuyt..maxi ..bellamy..carroll..Even reserve eccleston we have left ourselves worse off.

All this leaves me with seeds of doubt about the owners what with all the faffing around with the stadium issues and yesterdays debacle we now find ourselves in a desperate situation..in the circumstances i would prefer anelka to owen as not as injury prone and whatever way you look at it it is only a short term solution to a long term problem and if they are planning to bring morgan through it surely puts more pressure on him than he needs at this stage....I am now starting to think our owners are simply chancers if not they have a hell of a lot to learn and no real time to learn it in....Worrying times.

  28. Fair comment, Steve. Positivity is indeed essential. With that said, this could turn out to be a blessing in disguise (wonders never cease)...given some match time, Morgan and even Yesil could cause a few surprises. How wonderful would that be? Also, there's a bloke called Gerrard in the team who isn't all that shabby up front.

  34. No way should he be brought back not after he has played for them, though after the shambles of yesterday who's to say BR and FSG wont just completely finish the job of making us look stupid, if this happens then our days of been taken serious are officially over

    ReplyDelete
  35. id rather see a player from the under 15s play up front. we are small time. fsg out sooner rather than later. just totally clueless they are well out there depth. also like to add just brilliant how the stadium is coming on, what year was it we were supposed to be moving in?? my life time i hope eh. id rather some dirty arab running our club, more tegrity

    ReplyDelete
  36. I'm with BR in thinking outside the box (literally).. BR has other ideas with regards to Midfielders who can score a goal.. His training ideas involve 'cutting in' and 'straight through the middle dashes of brilliance'.. He doesn't want to just use strikers to get it in the back of the net. Cant remember where I read it but I liked the idea when I saw it, I think you'll find thats why Stevie G now runs just behind Suarez, to utilise his 'dash through' tactic in bursts, and I've seen it evident in Glen Johnson too who turns in on his left and strikes with suprise (I think Downing and Sterling has been given that advise too)..
I do believe however we still need a fox in the box as Suarez continues to show his inability to finish what he so perfectly started, and I said last week that Jordan Rhodes would have been a good shot... but.. hey ho.
All in all, We'll do ok without that much sought after 'last minute' marquee striker signing but Luis needs to sort his finishing skills out and the young ones like Morgan Suso, Ngoo, Yesil etc need to grow up quick and get their ass in the firing line...

Here's hoping we don't lose that confidence from the City match and smash the arse all over the field (oops, sounds a bit gay.. my bad)

YNWA (come on Luis, knock em in, I got a tenner on you for golden boot) ;)

  42. hold on paul ince played for them so get over it. we are in no position to be fussy and sign who we want .get him back and see wot happens he will no doubt get double figures if he stays free of injury. we have got to get another striker he aint goin cost us .nothing to lose . and if he scores the winner against manure all will be forgotten

    ReplyDelete
  43. he says two european teams are after him but he prefers 'to stay in the premier league'. so that means these two european teams are not in the premier league. however i would love to see him back here. we also desperately need a goalscorer. suarez is definitely not one. neither is borini. owen doesnt has the pace that he used to have but still knows how to score goals.there is no better natural finisher than him right now in the premier league. if he doesnt get injured HE WILL SCORE GOALS and will do fantastically well. so yes get him back to Anfield, quick! he wanted to return before goin to newcastle, rafa refused to match the price.. again when leaving newcastle liverpool wasnt willing to make the move. now is the time. right or wrong he might be let us forget the past and accept him. we need him!

    ReplyDelete
  44. now, i don't care who it is, get us some cover for a year and quick. i don't care who they played for in the past.

  46. Maybe Ince did play for them but he never learnt his trade with us, nor did he leave us the way Owen did, to bring him back would be a joke, we should go for Drogba

    ReplyDelete
  47. no he didnt leave the way owen did we got money for owen .ince got well an truelly fcuked off by gh .for being big time charley

  50. well i cleared my throat as a 10 year old at wembley in65 followed in 74 then in rome 77 wembley 78 the list goes on and on .we all need to pull together.if mo comes back lets get behind him .not be negative dont get me wrong i dispize manure more than anyone . but im lookin at the bigger picture are hands are tied we need another striker

    ReplyDelete
  51. Surely we would be a more attractive proposition as he should get more game time with us, but prestige wise obviously we cant compete

    ReplyDelete
  52. I'd have him back on the proviso that we can bring in Heskey as well. And if that fails there's still Rushie and God that I'm sure would accept a call.

I'd rather put faith in the academy players and let Morgan have a chance this season than bring in Owen, purely because of his age and likely wage demands ( he would pretty much have us over a barrel!). And at worst it shows the rest of the academy that they will be given a chance.

Are you deluded or what ..this owen wouldn't be the owen of 12 years ago ...it would be an over age over injured has been who would do nothing except block the passage of academy players ...did you watch him when he played the odd game for utd ..he was garbage and that was playing for the best team ....fox in the box ...more like body on the treatment table...talk about going backwards

  60. after watching the rubbish against aresnel , owen owes us for bringing him through , if he any pride would beg us to take him back and run himself into the ground till january when we get a younger poacher either by transfer or youth stepping up and as a further act of contrition pay all wages to charity. as for drogba go back to chelsky by all means and unsettle you know who, and we get him in january instead.

I'd welcome Owen. Though he may not be what he was, but he does have that goal scoring quality. what i wan't from him is to play 30 or 40 minute and fire the goal into the net. which is major problem for us..

It would smack of desperation, but thanks to the utter stupidity of FSG not sanctioning the Dempsey move, the situation upfront IS desperate.

To be frank, it's unlikely that getting Owen back would do much good - as he's likely to get himself injured during the press conference to announce his signing.

But if he's all that's available then he's all that's available. If there's even the remotest chance of getting Drogba or Anelka instead though, that should be explored because they're less A) less injury prone, and B) not ex-Manchester United players.

On the other hand, I hear Ian Rush has some time on his hands these days... Worth putting a call in, Brendan....
