'He did a good job' - Dalglish bemoans Rodgers' lack of 'belief' in LFC flop...

Former Liverpool manager Kenny Dalglish has launched an impassioned defence of Anfield flop Andy Carroll, arguing that he did a 'good job' for Liverpool, and suggesting that he could've become a top player for the club if Brendan Rodgers believed in him more.

Since leaving Anfield, Dalglish has repeatedly (and indirectly) defended his decision to sign the lumbering striker, and his latest comments show that he still maintains that Carroll was value for money.

In his weekly Column for The Mirror, Dalglish aimed a broadside at Rodgers, claiming that "I don't care how good a player you are, if you believe that the manager believes in you, it makes all the difference".

Rodgers clearly didn't believe in Carroll, but after his performances last season, it's not hard to see why. Dalglish added:

"Andy Carroll did a good job for me, and before people start criticising him, let's just remember a couple of things. There were only three trophies up for grabs last season and Andy won one of them. He made a big contribution to winning the Carling Cup, and scored the winner against Everton in the FA Cup semi-final.

"If I'd brought him on earlier in the final against Chelsea, he might have won that for us as well. As it was, he scored a goal and tormented their defence - and then destroyed Terry and Ivanovic at Anfield a few days later. The longer Andy stayed at Liverpool, the greater the improvement there was in him".

"Football is all about opinions and most of the time, people have different opinions. So just because Andy was not wanted at one club does not mean that applies elsewhere".

By Dalglish's own recollection, I make that three significant contributions in 18 months:

* Helping to win the Carling Cup.
* Scoring a goal in the FA Cup semi-final.
* Helping to beat Chelsea in a league game.

All three of those contributions came in the final month of the season. What about the other 17 months of Carroll's Anfield career?

I can totally understand Dalglish defending his buys, but after the first few months of Brendan Rodgers' reign, his transfer legacy is in tatters:

* Adam and Carroll shipped out.
* Spearing (who Dalglish gave an improved contract) has also gone.
* Downing has been demoted to Jose Enrique's defensive back-up.
* Henderson is now a bench-warmer, and will be for the whole season.
* Even Enrique seems to be struggling to make the first team.

Dalglish believes that Carroll will deliver the goods at West Ham, and I think he's right. Sam Allardyce will almost definitely set up the team to serve Carroll, which can only benefit the striker. I fully expect him to score goals for the Hammers, but even if he does, it won't make the decision to loan him out a mistake.

  9. carroll never played 5 games in a row whilst at LFC the majority of which was under KD. With all the outgoings we have now cut our wage bill by £450,000 a week. Ian Ayres has re-incarnated himself as a cross between Parry and Purslow

  10. Anyone that thinks Carroll could have done well eventually under BR's tiki-taka system is just crazy or talking rubbish. If he had stayed and played his value would have depreciated and we never would have gotten the close to the remaining 17 million at any point of his career at Liverpool. Dalglish is wrong and can't take it.

  12. Can Kenny tell me that if he was the owner of the club and he had all that money he spent, he would have still paid 35 Mil for Carroll. He believed so much in Carroll and even in the few substitute games that Carroll impressed, he was relegated to the bench in the next games. I still don't get why he goes on and on about the Carling Cup win and reaching the FA cup final. Again if he was the owner of the club, would he have concentrated on cups to CL qualification? With the way BR is going, give him 100 Mil and we will talking of missing out on the league title by few points or making 3rd comfortably and not finishing 8th, scoring less than relegated clubs, over 35 points below league winners, breaking negative records here and there.

  16. KD believed in AC that much that he kept him on the bench for the majority of his reign. KD paid 35 mill for an unproven 21 year old and overspent on other signing meaning BR has had to work to a small budget inderring LFC chances of a top 4 finish. Has for Enrique not getting in starting 11 he's been suffering a slight injury

  17. That's Dallgish putting up a woeful defense of a shocking transfer policy. He and Comolli are fullly accountable for serious transfer incompetence and Rodgers is admirably trying to eradicate it from Anfield. Legend he is but his tenure was a disaster.

  19. It isn't difficult to see why Carroll's contribution came in the last month, because he was injured when he joined, and all players need time to gain fitness, gel in. Everyone, can see he is improving and played some good game for England.

KD should be given another season, he hardly had a full strength squard with him last season. He didn't expect to be without his captain most of the season, Lucas, too. If that's not enough, that cheap trick from ManU to get rid of Suarez for 8 games (you can almost tell Fergie was worried our KD). Not a word of complaint, still managed to take us to two finals, won one. He gave chance to the youngsters and got his team playing some good passing football. His team played well against all top sides including ManU. People seems to forget that he had no say in terms of money. Those who blame KD for bad buys may eat their words when these players perform well this year… unfortunately, for other teams this time. BR dismantling KD's team, in particularly, removing Carroll could be unwise. I remember, past managers like GH, RB, KD, they all have a spine in the squard. Naturally, liverpool fans are disappointed, but definitely not all Kenny's fault. For sure, he got the team playing for each other, and to me, as an old supporter, he brought dignity back to LFC.

  21. We would be like Rangers were it not for FSG and John Henry. You bandwagoners are no good for LFC

    ReplyDelete
  22. Carr, what is wrong with admitting that KD made mistakes? Every manager makes mistakes. Shanks and Paisley made them too. As for saying dirty Arabs...look around the world...every where you look they're either killing each other or killing others. What is wrong with saying the truth? Or are they legends too?

  25. Few points here before everyone starts going crazy

    - Kenny doesn't say Carroll was value for money in the article
    - Carroll was NOT value for money, the price tag was a joke
    - FSG put their trust in the wrong man in Comolli
    - There has been an unforgivable communication breakdown in this window
    - Stoke don't play soccer, they play a different sport altogether
    - Makes you wonder if Kenny ever had any tactical awareness when he was winning at Liverpool or was the machine just trundling along for a while......

    ReplyDelete
  26. I've always had respect for dalglish and always will but believing in him means playing him when he does well or bad
Carroll was dropped for the cup final when he was the one that took us there in the first place, then after coming on he proved why he should have started
he would never have started under rodgers over borini and suarez so he was better of sending him on loan rather that keeping him on the bench for a whole season

    ReplyDelete
  27. FSG should have backed rodgers no doubt, but dey lost almost 100m on the shit buys "king" kenny made. If kenny had won the league with his buys and rodgers was ripping dem apart, I trust them liverpool fans would have been on his back. but we finished 8th "king" kenny and you still have the guts to defend a player u spent 35m on and embarrassed the lad in the newcastle game by taking him off. So much for belief in a player. YOU FUCKED UP KENNY!!! stop belittling urself anymore, u are already less than a "king"

    ReplyDelete
  28. Not sure about Brendan Rodgers what has he won as a player or manager? Loaning out Carrol when we've got no cover! And missing out on Dempsey to spurs! And borrini no strength pushed off the ball to easy!
    Gonna be a long season.

  29. the yanks gave kd decent money , he squandered it , yanks are good for lfc , kd has never done anything in bringing players in not even back in the mid 80s he never done anything and was scared to unload his mates from team so decided to jump ship to blackburn

    ReplyDelete
  30. Andy Carroll is fit to the Westham style of playing long high balls, not for the Liverpool style of pass and move. The strange fact is that Liverpool under Dalglish also played pass and move until Carroll was on the pitch and the whole system changed to high balls. I still can't understand why Dalglish aggreed to buy a striker who doesn't fit for pass and move system. I didn't enjoy Liverpool games when Carroll was on the pitch and for me it's better he left.

all i get from your rant is that you don't want to be banned. lots of us are getting disgruntled with fsg's approach.

  34. The majority of people making these comments are probably the same ones that wanted kd in the first place. KD will be be a legend for his playing times but surely we had to continue with RB,who wirh a quarter of the budget made us euro kings again, battled with the other owners and fought everyone who spoke against lfc. good luck BR we should be always behind our manager and not the players who are there for the money.with all respect to our idolSG what has he given us the past past 2 seasons

    ReplyDelete
  35. Further, about KD, I suppose if I was given a job to do in two years, I would plan my task for two years and expect my boss to trust me and others to support my work until the end.

Compare to Arsenal, ManU, Everton, we LFC has lost... a lot, a lot... since the David Moores' time.

BR could be good for us, but not letting KD to finish his job is unfair, just imagine is you, how would you feel.

Don't think KD is belebarlar BR, he was asked about Carroll and he is free to give his opinion.

    ReplyDelete
  36. not saying kd did not make mistakes but can you seriously say that we have played better football in the six competative matches we have played this season?as for dirty arabs personaly iam not bothered just saying jaimie lets comments like this pass but if you call him a dick your posts get blocked so what is worse if i was a arab i could take it as discrimination ps yes paisley said he remembered the bad times once they came second lol

  39. Carroll was a knee-jerk buy when Torres up and left at the last minute on transfer deadline day. He was really the only option around at that stage of the game. I am REALLY glad we didn't land up doing the same thing again. For me Dempsey and Sturridge would not have cut it at Anfield. Too lazy and don't tackle back. There will be other options at the next transfer window. In the meantime bring in Owen as a back up. He knows where the goal is and can surely stay fit for 10-15 games this season when needed. He can fit into Rodgers style of play.

  41. Liverpool fans should get behind the team and our manager Brendan Rogers. So it seems should the owners Fenway Sports Group. The jury is out on FSG. The Premier League has fundamental differences in approach, history & tradition to those of American professional sports. FSG appear to adopt a cerebral approach to professional sports. Their well known belief in the "Moneyball" approach to pro sports has rightly been questioned in soccer circles. The Robin Van Persie sale, for example, presumably wouldn't be a good fit with their approach.

2 recent articles from the Boston Globe & Boston Herald are below. FSG are presently struggling within an arena with which they are very familiar. Are some of their criticisms with the Red Sox comparable to the LFC situation as it is developing at present? I for one see some parallels.

For the record, I don't view the Red Sox & LFC as similar as many commentators make out. They both have older, historic stadiums and fanatical support. Liverpool haven't been English Champions for over 20 years whilst Boston hadn't won the World Series in over 80 until recently. But other than that there are considerable differences. Liverpool remain the most successful club in English football (albeit by a slim margin). Boston could never at any time in their history have been able make an assertion like that in the realms of American baseball.

At the end of the day I would like FSG to succeed. If they do then so would Liverpool. However, for them to have success they would need to have a better understanding on the running of a professional soccer club in England and the accompanying culture that goes along with it. That's easier said than done. I think most of us would have absolutely no clue on how to run a baseball franchise as the overall structure is entirely different to the system in English football. Logically it takes time and I have a sense that they would like to import many of their American sports characteristics in to the English game. I don't believe they can make those kind of changes until they have settled into the Premiership model comfortably. But more than that I would like FSG to realize that Liverpool is not just a brand. It is a Football Club and long may it continue to be so.

  49. Yes KD and Comoli and FSG got carried away and paid too much for Andy Carroll, but did BR give him a fair chance? NO! Does allowing him to leave and not replacing him make sense? NO. Is Borini based on what we have seen so far even worth £1m? NEVER!
Borini being useless so far doesn't mean he is useless. It is just another example of another player who will probably take a while to hit the ground running at our club, like Henderson and Coates who ultimately will be top draw players.
Blaming KD for payin over the odds for AC? Harsh because other parties were involved, but I understand it!
But letting him go out on loan with no replacement. CRAZY!, and KD. Any be blamed!

Can't see anyone in their right mind paying 35 million for him though!!!! As is often the case, lets not push the panic button just yet, Borini will come good and Suarez will stop missing sitters at some point.

  59. Getting sick an tired of hearing Kenny backing Carroll every chance he gets, maybe if he'd backed him more when they were at the club they'd both still be here? Whatever, the most criminal thing about the sorry saga is how anyone could set their team up around Torres' strengths then think replacing him with Carroll was a good idea considering they couldn't be any more different if they were actually from different planets!

    ReplyDelete
  60. I totally agree with the King, Andy Carroll should never be labelled a "flop". If he got half the quality service as he did at Newcastle, he'd have beaten RVP for goals last season!

    ReplyDelete
  61. Can you actually speak English? Because sure as hell you can't write or spell it. As to the loss of £100M where do you get your figures from? It would seem your accountancy skills match you illiteracy. Oh and by the way shouting in no way enhances your argument. I take it you will be shouting for Rodgers head on Sunday.

    ReplyDelete
  62. I think Kenny is just underlining a point here, one that many of us actually agree with, to literally force Carroll out of the Club and then not replace him is stupidity coupled with a kind of arrogance.

For sure we have certain fans who really didn't want Carroll to succeed, those same fans scoffed when he was picked for England in the Euro's, probably many of them are not even English....

He was getting his shit together and was'nt wanted, he did change the game against Chelsea in the FA Cup and lets face it IF he could do that in such a big game like that then was definitely hope for the lad, plenty of it, even the Kop started taking to the guy....so what do we do..?

    Force him out....

It seems that most Liverpool strikers that i have liked over the last 10 years have been either unsettled or blatantly and ruthlessly shown the door.....

Really not happy with the direction the Club is going in and whats more im even more concerned with the methods being employed to achieve those ends....

Im not going to do the Kenny debate, personally i think he was seriously let down last season by the likes of Suarez and Reina & Co, yes we did pay OTT for certain players but none of them were as shit as have been made out to be, there were other underlying factors at play and all was not how it appeared, our demise has been blamed solely on Kenny and CHAD, even our own transfer fcuk up on deadline day etc, which for me is just going to far, shit on your legends at your own peril, had we converted half of our missed chances last season and had our goalkeeper been playing like we know he can....then we would not have finished 8th, we would have gained some winning momentum also....

51 more shots than United last season yet we scored 41 fewer goals....

Getting a bit fed up with all this revisionism tbh and blame....FSG have got it wrong IMO, we/they are very quick to sling mud at Kenny and attribute all our woes to CHAD, but for me thats only one side of the story....

Those people who have read any of my post's will know that i think there IS another side to this and it seems like the real culprits i.e. Reina Suarez & Co....are being protected and excused their apparent dips in form, not being forced out of the Club and not being blamed by the fanbase.....

    2 sides.....Not 1, but 2, lest we forget...

    ReplyDelete
  63. He didn't have a choice. If the wonderful Torres had decided to go a few weeks sooner then there would have been time to bring in a decent replacement. Unfortunately Dalglish and Comolli had literally a couple of hours and Carroll was the only game in town. 12 months on and Rodgers has hit the same roadblock but the only available player was Dempsey but as he is just shy of 30 it broke John Henrys overage rules.

  65. YES dignity... but he wanted our team to be as much GB as possible, and i think he went too far. now br is going too far with sending his players away... we dont seem able to find a balance, possesion game is great, but what is wrong with having a tall guy in the box?

Seriously you say i havent got a clue then say he is getting better and better, he had a couple of half decent games in 18 months, hardly represents a good player, he is good at 1 thing and thats heading a ball, he has zero technical ability, and i have seen people who are stood stil appear to be running quicker then him!!!

  72. Jaimie, to use one of your favourite phrases...stop looking for something which isn't there. I don't read the Mirror, but all the quotes you have here are just stating the obvious and also facts! He did come good towards the end of last season, he did drag us out the shit and nearly took the FA cup final into ET and his performance against Chelsea was outstanding (a lot of that game was played on the deck by the way, with AC's best moments coming from quick feet and turn sod pace). Also, it's pretty reprehensible for you to use the 'he's destroyed him' quote in the title...where does KD say that in any of the article here? Please show me....(to use another favourite)....I'm waiting.....

  73. JAson Carr and Bill have been talking realistic sense. Glad some supporters don't buy into bs. Our ownership had no idea about footy, Im beginning to think they have learn next to nothing in there time here. Our squad was in shambles all last season. How many games did Andy, louie, and Stevie play together? So our best two midfielders are out a majority of the games last term, what did the owners want? Kenny to lace up his boots again? It's pretty harsh by Fsg. Didn't read some of the comments cuz some of us just might be on that high quality gear. Please don't bash kenny! He never had full control. But BR is supposedly in charge of the squad....so who does it fall on for our window blunder?apparently our owners wouldn't be strongarmed for 2€mil more for dempsey....?we would sell that in shirts in one day. Someone please Look what they are doing to both their clubs. a lot going out and nothing coming in.....a bit strange. Looks like liquidation of assets.....but what do I know. Stay up reds. Lets get these gooners.Ynwa

  74. I share your concerns re Kenny, but i don't think they are that stupid as to go even further in their ruthless attempt to smear Kenny by portraying him in a bad light, if anything it will probably be complimentary....you know to try and paint THEMSELVES in a good light....

These feckers are a lot cleverer than the last lot, but IMO they have been ill advised....and seeing as they're relatively new to the game they don't know any better....

Its all about just trying to protect their investment, its not a co incidence that we are seeing "positive" spin coming out of the Club re certain "protected" players and the like...

Im sure this documentary will be full of nauseating propaganda designed for self promotion/marketing etc.

The one thing they definitely won't touch on is their lack of investment in the Club....

7 odd million net spend in this window???

Show us the money FSG, we're not interested in your fecking documentary....

    ReplyDelete
  75. how did fsg lose a 100m on the buys kenny made ? , first of all the money that was used to buy carroll was from the sale of torress , whom was brought by the previous owners , the sale of torress and babel basically payed for carroll and suarez in that window , the money they got for mascherono was used to buy merieles and since then hes been shipped out so thats still money that originally came from previous owners , fsg to me should come out and let the fans know , where they are financially and if they can take the club forward ,instead of making us fans live on false hopes , they have apparently been shipping players out of the red sox as well , so it seems to me they are struggling to balance the books , if theyre policy is not to over spend on older players then why did we get joe cole ,regardless he came free his wages every year are enough to buy depth in the squad , so to not pay the extra million for dempsey who is in the prime of his life is ridiculous , for any one to say brendon rogers should get sacked is a retard , i fully believe he was of the understanding he would get replacements just like we all thought , but like us he had the wool pulled over his eyes by the owners . and sorry to say dude kenny will always been the king of anfield regardless of what you say , and to me he should of had another year at the helm . so to end my rant fsg need to pull their heads out their asses and financially back the club they bought or sell it to some one who has the passion for the club and wants to take it forward other wise the quality players we do have out our disposal will leave for greener pastures and once again will be in the same mess we were 2 years ago ynwa

  76. Football is about results not opinion. Results form opinions. I guess this is why Carroll didn't get to play for LFC even when Dalglish was in charge because he wasn't scoring enough goals.

    ReplyDelete
  77. With the benefit of 20/20 hindsight I believe it was wrong to sign Comolli, Dalglish, Carroll, Henderson and Rodgers. No hindsight needed to tell us Downing should never have been allowed into Anfield without a ticket! (Everyone except Comolli & Kenny knew he was rubbish - even as far back as his Middlesbrough days)
Friday was another ground hog day for Liverpool's owners and management. How embarrassing for Dempsey to have to jump unto the Tottenham bus before the window slammed shut and he was forced back to Fulham. A very good American who really wanted to play for LFC but was shunned for £1 or £2m. Oh how the mighty have fallen!
Rodgers didn't even give Carroll a chance before driving him out without a ready replacement. - Clearly he has not read the parable about the man who burned down his barns before building new ones.
Yes Bren 'What a fine mess you've put us in'!

Someone said earlier on this site that Ole Drogba is a free agent. - If that is true Bren buy a ticket that takes you to him and don't come back until he's signed. He's still got the power to save your bacon. But on no account approach Owen he's had his last payday from the Reds.

  78. With no disrespect to KD, he should just shut up and retire peacefully. He had been given a chance to prove himself as a good manager and screwed up big time with his hug purchases which were problematic and snowedball down to BR and made it difficult to get the players we want. Somehow I get a feeling that FSE are slowly showing their bad colours.

  79. Dalglish and Comollis transfer policy was an utter disaster pal. Take your head out of the sand. Souness was a pool legend as a player. As a manager. Well......

    ReplyDelete
  80. lol @ you haven't got a clue then saying he's the best striker in PL at heading the ball.

Are you for real, last time i checked a strikers main job was to score goals. Put Skrtel up front he will win headers all day long and probly score more aswell.

Saying that I do wish Carroll the best n hope he does get goals so we get more interest in him and more money for him come the summer.

  81. Are you mad? I realise people like to stick up for their team. But, trying to justify Suarezs ban is pretty piss poor mate. You have the audacity to call posters who criticise the behaviour of the team last season 'juvenile'. How about growing up yourself. As for losing Gerrard. Weve been doing so for years now. If that penny hasnt dropped by now god help thia club.

    ReplyDelete
  82. Your trying to justify a panic buy? Nice one. Well done.

  83. How Dalglish has got the nerve to critisize whats going on at LFC
makes my blood boil,he will no longer be remembered as one of
our bestever players but as the most wasteful managers ever.
We are virtually having to give away the players he squandered
over 80m on. When you realise the players we should/could have
signed it brings me close to tears.Kenny do us all a favor stick
to Ainsdale GC. or wherever you now spend your time.

the glory. To see him smirking after the game against Fulham,
made me cringe. His instructions were just keep lumping it
to Carroll & see what happens. And Rodgers was his partner,
    for allowing it to happen.

  86. The pro kenny an pro rafa club need to give it a rest an move on. The past is the past put it to bed an give rodgers a chance. I believe giving time (and backing from the yanks) hes the man to bring the glory days back to our club.

    ReplyDelete
  87. A bit hypocritical considering Dalglish tried to swap Carroll for Tevez in the January transfer window!

    ReplyDelete
  88. As a manager, when you are given 120 mil to buy players the KPI is you are judged on the results from your transfer policy!! The fact is not only the players bought by KD are suck....but the money spent on Downing could have been used to buy Mata, the money spent on Carroll could have been used to buy Aquero, the money spent on Hendersen and Adam could have been used to Yaya Toure!!!

    ReplyDelete
  89. KD has had his 2nd chance...he better keeps his mouth shut if he still demands the little respect left with him!!

    ReplyDelete
  90. He was saying it in the context of sending Andy back to Newcastle. Don't let facts get in the way, eh?

Even I am not convinced with Rodgers, but he seems to have a clear vision of what he wants to do. I see similarities to Rafa (not my favorite, to say the least) and that can be a good thing.

At least the football seems to have improved and I am genuinely excited about the Allen-Sahin pairing. Even Downing and Shelvey seem to have improved visibly. With Sterling and Morgan getting more first team chances, and wage bill considerably reduced I have a feeling we'll do just fine till Jan when we can buy the needed players.

    ReplyDelete
  91. agree...rodger didnt want to let Andy go, its just the big guy wants more games n didnt want to sit around n "work" things out...no one is at fault, just gotta move on...All the best Andy, scores some goals n come back to help us..

  93. What is tika taka football? Did we not play pass and move under KD? Andy Carrol would`ve turned good for us,should`ve stayed. We are in a worst state now than we where before Friday.

    ReplyDelete
  94. I suppose KD treats this 35 mil pounds big guy and the 20 mil pounds JH as players for the future. So it was just right that they start games on the bench. This is a luxury even manager at Mansour City cannot afford.

    ReplyDelete
  95. Dalglish showed him so much support and had so much confidence in him that he barely played him. The fact that he said "if I had brought him on earlier in the FA Cup final we could have won it", if he had that much confidence in him, he would have started with him. It isn't BR that has treated him badly, it was Dalglish. Paid 35m for him and then barely played him.

    ReplyDelete
  96. I see your point about buying Mata, Aquero... but that's a big assumption that they want to come. And I also believe the policy of buying young british with resale value wasn't KD's idea, he brought Suarez early on and not many say that's a wrong acquisition. What KD brought in at the time was the best available british players in the previous season and I certainly did not expect Henderson, Carroll or even Adam to perform in their first season.

I just hope BR is not doing what Graeme Souness did, dismantling the team so quickly. I remember GS sold a few of LFC players to Villa and Leeds that year and we all know what happened then.

    ReplyDelete
  97. Such awful form that only 2 clubs last season had a better defense than us and they were both the Manchester sides. We finished with 40 goals conceded, as did the Bitters, Man Utd finished with 33 conceded and Man City with 29 conceded.

    ReplyDelete
  98. Let's face it, all of the reign was KD. Only two EPL games under BR and both times, Carroll featured.

    ReplyDelete
  99. We believe the facts, that is, we were over 300m in debt under H&G and FSG bought the club and in doing so, wiped our debt out. They gave 100m to Comolli and Dalglish to spend and we finished in 8th. They weren't going to risk that again with another new manager. What FSG is doing is building a steady foundation for the future, spending within our means and not building up the debt that we had suffered with under H&G and a debt that Man Utd are suffering with. The majority of us know exactly where we stand and we know that idiots like yourself are not welcome at Liverpool. Liverpool is known for having the best fans in the world and the fans being a 12th man for them. It's time we acted like true Liverpool supporters and got behind our club 100% and became that 12th man again.

    ReplyDelete
  100. What I find ironic is that these legends that have become pundits and say we should only be buying these high profile players with loads of money forget that they came from the lower leagues as "no-names" to become legends. Even Dalglish, although came from Celtic, was not really known on the world stage, although under us, very soon became world class, because he was moulded into the type of player we wanted.

    ReplyDelete
  101. Nothing is wrong with having a tall guy in the box if he was able to play to the style and not disrupt the style. Don't get me wrong, AC is a good player and will probably score goals at West Ham, but is he a good player for us? For our style? That is another question altogether. In my opinion, not a good player for us. As far as getting rid of Spearing and Adam, these are good moves and we have the strength in depth in midfield now, I still think Henderson could come good, but Adam and Spearing I don't think so. And the difference between KD and BR is that the British player that BR bought, being one Joe Allen, is actually a good fit for our club.

    ReplyDelete
  102. Aldridge was actually a KD acquisition as Rush left Liverpool to go to Juve when KD came in and he had to get a replacement. However, KD inherited both the majority of the team and the playing style from Fagan. Unfortunately, when fans look at the best managers of our past, we look at Shankly, Paisley, Dalglish, Benitez, but more often than not, Joe Fagan gets overlooked, and imo, Joe Fagan deserves a lot more credit than Dalglish does.

    ReplyDelete
  103. Ok, so if the figure wasn't exactly 100m, it was still a lot of money, Carroll for 35m, Suarez nearly 25m, Downing 20m, Henderson 17m, Adam 8m, Enrique 6m, that actually adds up to over 100m, if I have done my maths correctly, that is 111m, and maybe my figures aren't correct, but they aren't that far off. And the fact of the matter is, spending all that money in two transfer windows and we finished 8th in the league. That under anybody's view is a failure. Some people say is was KD, other people say it was Comolli, truth is it was both and as a result, both are gone. BR was looked at because he was able to bring an attractive playing style to a team, bring in players relatively cheaply and get results. Something that regardless of what you think, Kenny failed to do. The fact of the matter is, that although only 2 teams last season had a better defense than us, we only scored 47 goals, finished 4 points behind Everton and an astonishing 12 points behind Chelsea, this is unforgivable for the amount of money that they gave Kenny to spend. Regardless of what people say that the money that Kenny had to spend was money recouped from sales, this is just semantics, it is revenue the club brings in that goes to buy players and had we have finished higher, we would have had more revenue. Simple as that.

  105. i could tell you what fs stands for but my post would be with held lol

  106. Another fact is that the reason why the transfer policy under KD can be considered a failure is that with all the money he spent on players, the team finish 8th last season. In Kenny, FSG didn't trust anymore

    ReplyDelete
  107. Kenny Dalglish has no right to talk at all as he betrayed and dissapointed everyone with the how much he spent to bring all those players:
    Andy Carroll - 35m instead of 15m
    Jordan Henderson - 16m instead of 4m
Steward Downing - in the age of 27 and with 2 years left of his contract 20m
and the big question Mr. Kenny Dalglish: what have the offerred to the clubs as players?
So, instead of attacking others just say sorry for putting us in this situation! If you want respect by us you should had also showed respect to this club when it is entrusted you with a transfer budget of 100m and you went and sold Fernando Torres instead of talking to him and try to keep him until summer and then go and spend that budget of world class players instead of players who they were not up to the challenge of a club like LFC!

  109. As part of the Mourinho regime, won the EPL. He was in his early 30s at the time, he is still only 38. He has also won promotion, you may sneer at this, but for a team like Swansea and no disrespect to them, to get them promoted and then to have them finish midtable, only 3 places off us and only 5 points off us and scoring only 3 less goals than us, that is a huge achievement. He now has better players under his tutelage and because of this, providing we adapt to the new style quickly, which if our performance against Man City is any evidence, than we have, then this is going to be an exciting season

    ReplyDelete
  110. This was the January transfer window when this happened, we had already bought a striker and then we bought AC who was injured and pretty much had no part to play for the rest of the season, so we would have been better off not paying the money for him, waiting until summer and buying a better option

    ReplyDelete
  111. Benitez with the budget he was given, punched well and truly above his weight, Guillem Balague, the extremely well respected Spanish football jounalist, stated that under H&G, it would have been realistic for us to be fighting for 5th or 6th position, for us to be in the top 4 and more times than not in the top 3 and then nearly taking the title in that one glorious season, showed the tactical genius he is. There are actually a lot of parallels between BR and RB, both started their managerial career as youth coaches at high profile clubs, Chelsea and Real Madrid respectively, both cut their teeth in the lower leagues, won promotion, went to a bigger club, Rafa turned Valencia, a club with a big history in Spanish football, from underperforming mid-table mediocrity into title winners and took them to the CL final, all this at a young age, around the same age as BR is.

  112. Belebarlar? As for the rest of this post, Dalglish was only ever seen as a caretaker manager, they performed quite well under him in the back end of that season, better than they performed under Hodgson, which let's be frank, wasn't hard, then was given a 2 year contract and quite a large transfer kitty and we finished 8th. This in anybody's view was unacceptable, he wasn't their first choice in the first place and when he underperformed, they let him go, nothing unfair about it.

  117. Tbh, I don't think FSG see us as a brand, just like they don't see Red Sox as a brand, they could easily have moved to another bigger field, but instead refurbished Fenway Park, which has a lot of sentimental value for the Boston fans. They are wanting to do the same with Anfield, rather than move to a new field that doesn't have any meaning to us, they are looking to refurbish Anfield because Anfield has a lot of sentimental value for us. This shows an understanding of the culture of a franchise. In fact, if you look at the set up of American sports and baseball in particular, they have the major league, then they have the minors where the sides in the minors are feeding clubs to the clubs in the majors, the minors are relatively full seasons as well, something which football in Britain could learn from. Even the Spanish and Italian leagues have something modified but similar in place, with the bigger clubs having their "B" teams in the lower leagues playing full seasons against credible opponents, so when they are called into the "A" team, they can fit in seamlessly, this is something Rafa called upen during his time in charge of us as the state of the reserve league as it is is quite frankly ridiculous

    ReplyDelete
  118. Just a thought, but no, they are in this for the long term, if you look at Boston Red Sox, they did the same there within their first couple of seasons, the older players with the highest wages, they traded them to other clubs, brought in some younger players or some players with Championship pedigree that were free agents, and won the World Series twice and up until last season, were a fixture in the playoffs. They are following the same model for the success they experienced at the Red Sox.

    ReplyDelete
  119. And by the way, you are painting all American owners with the same brush as the failures. There have been British owners that have failed and yet you haven't said that British owners are not good for football teams. In fact, there are far more British owners who have failed at running football clubs than American owners.

  120. Carroll doesn't fit the system end of....Liverpool are pass and move ....Carroll as much as i like him cant pass wind ...we have to embrace the BR philosophy ....Greece won the euros with an unheard of team ..but they played as a team and played a system...we have been over reliant for to long on certain players performing ..if the system works that wont be the case

    ReplyDelete
  121. So you didn't see him against Man City then where he tormented the defense, made loads of intelligent runs, set up a gilt-edged chance for Suarez at the start of the second half and played a very clever touch to release Johnson in the chance that should have resulted in a penalty. And although he missed the chance that Sterling set up, the fact that he got into that position shows that he is worth the money. This was only his second EPL match for us and he has already looked very dangerous. Is in your opinion being useless mean he hasn't scored an EPL goal yet for us? Because if that is the case, you don't know much about football.

    ReplyDelete
  122. absolute rubbish.you simply have no knowledge of what you are saying. I am in awe of Joe but KD developed a team that played football like has never been matched. Remember what Tom Finney said about the Notts F game.

  128. Maybe so, but the facts of last season are, Kenny was given a big budget to bring in players to improve the results from the season before. We finished in 8th position, 52 points and 47 goals scored. The previous season, we finished 6th, with 58 points and scored 59 goals. These are the cold hard facts, regardless of the underlying circumstances. And for that reason and that reason alone, he had to go.

  136. I am part of the pro Rafa club, I thought he did amazing things for Liverpool and brought a sense back to the club that we were good enough to win the league, the players he has bought are still with the club to this day, he revamped the academy, he has left a lasting legacy and the players that he bought that have been sold, have done so with a massive profit. I am also 100% behind BR and see a lot of parallels between BR and Rafa

    ReplyDelete
  137. Agree, Carroll isn't a bad player, he is just not suited to the style of play that BR has. We have bought young players without the huge egos that can be team players and moulded into the Liverpool way, because of this, they are less likely to move on to other clubs when we are not ready for them to.

    ReplyDelete
  138. also heard that Klasnic, Anelka and Sinima Pongollle might be available. But if we did sign them, would we be able to play them as the registration for the season has passed???

  141. Hope BR get the sack sooner than later. He is only taking pride in the tika-taka style of play and wiping out the slate clean of the previous manager's recruits. He is good at managing mid-table teams not Liverpool. At least Kenny took us to two cup finals and won one of them. We will be lucky to do the same this season. Have you seen the UEFA group we are in. It's very tricky. We will be third in Group A above the Swiss team. Good progress!!!

    ReplyDelete
  142. KD should only have gone back as caretaker, because as full time manager he HAD to succeed. Now Kenny and Commoli have put us back finacially with their disasterous delve into the transfer market. Carroll was massively overpriced, should have walked away at £12 mill if that, no one will touch him above that ( we've tried it ) Adam lost us £3 mill in 12 months and no one wants Downing, henderson and Joke'ole ( £90k a week ) although can't blame KD for Cole (that was Woy, "we'll get in Poulson" Hodgdson). Can't blame FSG for wanting value for money, they did'nt get it, neither did the fans. So King Kenny really should keep a low profile 'till we recover. YNWA.

    ReplyDelete
  143. Dalglish thought that Suarez and Carroll would work together. He just thought 'big man and small man'. Perfect!

What Dalglish failed to realise is that Carroll is more suited to a team that plays like how say West Ham do, whereas Suarez is more suited to how we are currently trying to play.

When Suarez joined he played pass and move football with Kuyt and Maxi and it was a pleasure to watch and we quickly climbed our way up the league, from relegation fodder to narrowly missing out on 5th.

By the next transfer window Carroll was fit again and Dalglish made another massive error (after signing him in the 1st place) and chose to build the team around him. He wasted the club's cash on 3 British assist-makers to try and get goals out of Carroll and in doing so, dumped Maxi and Kuyt (the two players that linked with Suarez the best) out of the starting XI. You will then notice a massive drop in our form.

In short. Our team needs to be play in EITHER the Suarez style or the Carroll style. KD chose Carroll and failed miserably. BR is choosing Suarez (which was a no-brainer given BR's style of play) and if he can get him back to the level he was at Ajax (and in his first half season at LFC) it will be job done.

Carroll is a great player, don't get me wrong. But Kenny took one of the biggest gambles in footballing history and sadly based it on 'big man and short man' instead of the playing styles in which each respectively flourishes, and thus failed. Miserably.

    ReplyDelete
  144. Did you watch last night how well Andy Carroll play v Fulham ,he is the good player ,only the manager don't know how to deploy him.

    ReplyDelete
  145. So how many minutes did KD give Carroll? I think KD has had the biggest hand in putting pay to AC having a successful stint at Liverpool. That said, I also believe the decision to let him go has been too hasty.

    ReplyDelete
  146. If Comolli signed him why did Dalglish take responsibility for the transfers.

    ReplyDelete
  147. If that's true then why does Dalglish always claim that he was the one who wanted him?

    ReplyDelete
  148. Exactly. KS has said repeatedly that he wanted Carroll; and as Royce said below, he admitted in public that all the signings were his decision.

    ReplyDelete
  149. This is what i believe, Carroll is ok maybe he will improve, now we all know we paid way too much for him, as for playing with the ball on the ground AC stands very little chance at the moment, i can understand KD (i still love him for the past) when he says that BR should not get rid of him but he has loaned him out not sold him, now there is a huge difference now i too like big forwards but if they are not mobile enough and do not posess some skill at their feet than they become useless.
I will give you examples of tall forwards that have those qualities, Drogba one of, if not the best, Emmanuel Adabyour (spelling) fantastic player Llorendt (spelling) another and even for me Berbatov was very dangerous regardless of what anyone says his record when playing speaks volumes, then we could add Klose from Gerrmany aswell, now i hope AC becomes like these guys i really do, but this is BR's time to do the job and i just hope that all the past and present supporters get behind him and support the club and team like we use too.
There is too much bickering going on and everyone has an opinion (which is what this is) but we should just forget about what has happened and look forward, do not get me wrong i too did not like who KD brought and i also am not convinced that FSG are the right people for this job, i mean come on we are talking about Liverpool Football Club and i pretty sure BR and the players have enough pressure on them.
God i would have loved it if we could have brought in Sissoko and Diamao (spelling) but it was not to be, lets hope we can get them in January (wishful thinking).
Just to finish let me say that i have been critical of the team and the manager last season so what i am asking for may seem wrong when i too have done it, but if we can stop all the bullshit and just support the team anyway we can we might just see what we all are hoping for a very good season fingers crossed, YNWA used to mean something and should still.

    ReplyDelete
  150. You might want to criticise the King for bringing the wrong striker to Liverpool, but not for overpaying - that was all Henry's decision, albeit badly advised by Commoli.

    ReplyDelete
  151. I may be wrong, I remember Fagan, one of LFC greatest, retired in the summer 85 and Barnes, Beardsley and Aldridge joined LFC in the summer of 87. Well, nevermind, just hope BR will do well for LFC.

    ReplyDelete
  152. Barnes and Beardsley signing in Summer '87; Aldo signed in January '87.

  155. read the daily mirror today, the owners of liverpool are in financial trouble, one of their american clubs has gone bankrupt and the other is in deep trouble, surely this is why they are offloading players so as not to pay the wages (they have dropped three players from their american teams) they want to sell all our players, pocket the money and in the autumn/winter they will clear off when will liverpool wake up and smell the coffee and andy carroll has not been given a chance at this club i wish him well and hope he scores a quiverful of goals.

    ReplyDelete

  157. Today we saw why Liverpool are 10 years away from the title.

Okay before anyone says that im a football manager, i want to say this is just an opinion, we need 80m pound gross transfers. But i think Liv has better chance of winning league than that happening.

Anyway these are players we need

    GK: Ter Stegen(15m) or Muslera(12m).
    LB: Cissokho(9m)
    CAM: Dzagoev(15m)
    WI: Ben Arfa(15m) or Walcott(5m).
    ST: Doumbia(20m), Nilmar(10m).

Its make it or break it for the yanks. Support the team financially or sell 1/3 share to Kuwait.

  158. I'm a massive fan of Andy carroll. It says it all if he was coming good in the last month. The improvement was there/ He had lots of injury problems and fitness concerns probably related to his lifestyle. My heart sank when I read he was off to West Ham. He was colossus in both the Chelsea games and he had a good Euro's (what he played). For Rodgers to try and bring this tika taka to Liverpool, it won't work. Never will because we don't have the players capable of playing it. How different today's match could have been had we had an Andy Carroll to come on. I think Dalglish is right regarding Carroll. The longer he was at the club, the more he would have bedded in. Just a shame we probably won't get to see his best.

  159. NO Jaimie mate. Disagree with u. Loaning Carroll was a mistake.
    1. KD is right, Carroll has the talent to be a top striker.
    2. Now we see Pool's misfiring strikers and we have no replacement!
    3. We keep sending crosses in. But Suarez and Borini are too short and no one can head.
    4. Borini is worse than Carroll!!!

Loaning Carroll is a mistake. Rodgers is a mistake.

  160. I would have preferred to have gotten behind Dalglish and Clark. Now the team is a mess. Rodgers has no clue and is definitely not an upgrade (he is a downgrade isnt he). His signings are bigger duds.

  161. Ok might be an odd time but anybody prepared to protest against FSG at the start of our match against Manu.

we all know what Andy was doing at new castle that's why Dalglish go for him,But Liverpool is a master club and Carroll will be come a tough player and all depends on time..........he is just young and what dalglish was saying is right......Carroll need time at Liverpool this is because he was injured before we buy him and when he was fully fit at new castle at that time,he was tough and there is no wrong about this

  167. Rubbish. How many goals did he score last season?

  168. Glad to see FSG are saving half a million a week in wages... it will help to offset the money they're going to lose when Liverpool are in the Championship

  169. I'd LOVE to know how many on here go to anfieid
and how many are Web fans

Liverpool football club exists to win trophies
But we have no Devine right to win them

To build a team takes time
Kenny Dalglish won a trophy in his first season
Rafa won 2 in six seasons

We were more on the right track last year than we are now
    Don't you all agree ?

Jamie I'm counting the days before you start on Rodgers

    ReplyDelete
  170. I couldnt agree more with you Bill.If anybody thinks that you can get this club finnish in the top4 spot in a couple of years they are deluded. KD was on the right track and he must been given another year at the helm. And if he got this one year we would all be much more closer to the top4 like were gonna be with BR. No offence, but play tiki taka like BR wants will never be enough. The LFC are not as good as Barcelona and even Barcelona losses with this brainles tiki taka play. You need to score goals in football not just pasing the ball from one defender to the next. Did anybody saw what did Steve Clarke with WBA? HE was our coach last year remember?!!!!! And one more thing: Did anybody remember how KD and his medical staff looked after our players? If they werent 110% fit they couldnt play! Look at as now!!!!!!! New medical staff and Lucas is back on the sideline for two or three months because new medical staff cant look after the players!!!!

  171. If Liverpool was only supported by people who go to Anfield, then I don't imagine Houllier, Rafa, or Dalglish Mk2 would have won a thing. We could be like the Geordies, they, according to a number of surveys have the most loyal and devoted fans; travelling the longest distances, spending the most money going to away games etc.
What have they won in the PL era? A Champions League? A UEFA Cup? Two UEFA Super Cups? Two FA Cups? Four League Cups? Nope....the club with the bigger stadium won an Intertoto cup in 2006.
I feel that you should probably be glad that Liverpool has fans who don't attend Anfield, it means we have more [fans], which roughly translates to more cash.
If Dalglish hadn't p***** it up the wall we might not be in our current situation. We have got rid of someone who paid nigh on 20 mill for Downing, a man who has scored 39 goals and got 61 assists in 371 appearances. Was that sensible? So, no, I do not agree, that we were "more on the right track last year".

  172. Dude your a genius, but why not sign:
    GK: Butland (5m)
    LB: Sandro (10m)
    CAM: Kaka (2.5m)
    W: Gotze (30m)
    ST: Leandro Daimaio (20m).
    That's a Net spend of 67.5m.
Top flight managers are obvs dim. Why can they not realise that it's v.simple, it's the same as FM, fools!
