Confirmed: €8m wing target rejects LFC and joins Schalke. Big loss...?

Over the last few months, Liverpool have been persistently linked with a loan move for Barcelona star Ibrahim Afellay, and speculation intensified this week when the winger's Agent confirmed that he would definitely be leaving the Nou Camp in the current transfer window. The Reds' chances were admittedly slim, but it's all moot now as Afellay has decided to join Schalke.

Last night, Schalke striker Klaas Jan Huntelaar posted a message on his Twitter account confirming the signing of Afellay. He said:

"I want to welcome Ibrahim Afellay at #S04.!! Tomorrow training at 16.00.. Don't forget ;) wilkommen Ibrahim Afellay..!"

Afellay

According to respected Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf, Afellay had previously rejected a move to Anfield:

"Oussama Assaidi was Liverpool's second choice. Brendan Rodgers was hoping for the arrival of Ibrahim Afellay on loan, but the winger had no appetite to come to Anfield, and rejected the club's offer".

The hunt continues for a striker though, and speaking to Reporters after the Hearts game last night, Rodgers explained that Andy Carroll had 'made it clear to me he hasn't played as regular as he wanted, I couldn't guarantee that', and when asked whether Carroll would be replaced, he gave the following emphatic response:

"We will replace Andy Carroll.

"We have a number of targets that we hope to conclude some deals tomorrow, but it's not always our choice."

Liverpool have today been linked with a shock move for Brazil start Leandro Damiao, with Klaas Jan Huntelaar and Clint Dempsey also realistic targets.

  1. Yes this is huge loss I believe. Clearly a better player then any of the wingers we currently have....could also play behind a striker. Big disappointment for me he didn't join.

  3. Not much we can do if a player rejected us. If he does not want to come here then fair enough. Move to the next target.

  4. It would have been great to have Afellay but i am not too bitterly disappointed because Sterling has really impressed and Assaidi is yet to make his debut and with Downing as backup doesn't look too bad.
Only thing that genuinely concerns me is a lack of goalscorer in our team and the fact that we are being linked with Sturridge makes me sick because don't want him to play for Liverpool as he is too selfish is not that prolific either. I would love to see Liverpool signing Llorente or Huntelaar along with Dempsey and that would make me really excited for our prospects in the league this season.

  5. his form hasn't been the best now for a couple of years. i think it would have been a big money loan deal for a typical 'head down when things don't go my way dutchman. i'm glad he isn't moving to anfield.

  6. after the hunter tweeting that he looks like going nowhere.. but it would be good and funny if he welcomes someone into his clubs as he leaves for Liverpool.... Get Dempsey for 5mil and Daniel S on loan for the season with a view to buy...

  7. Well if the hunter is exited to have him at the club, then that tells me he's going no where.

  9. Hello I'm a colombian fan of lfc but to be honest this squad needs to improve, I would recommend a fellow country men in the attacking position.they would be carlos bacca he is now playing for club brugges, and also teofilo gutierrez either one of them could be lethal up front

  10. Would probably rather have Sturridge I think. Also apparently Villa have had a bid for Dempsey accepted! Villa are worse than Fulham, why would he go there?

  11. Dempsey has scored 20 goals on average over the last 3 seasons, he is at the peak age for a striker and has played injury free for over 5 seasons, he's cheap due to having 1 year on the contract plays as attacking mid of forward and has attack attack attack constantly ingrained in the way he plays...remind me of Sturridges stats again...oh yes...bench warmer of the year...he has skill, I'm not denying that, but don't just ignore Dempsey's skill because he's 29.

We took Bellamy at 32 and he still had enough fight in him to make the first team on a  regular basis, we would see at least 4-5 years worth of decent football from a deal for under £8m REAL VALUE.

If we're clever we will get both in and then have a completely dominant force, I also hear rumours that Ramierez deal is also back on so it seems that our problems could be over with (am totally prepared for foot in mouth if Arsenal games goes wonky!)

  12. I would be happy with Dempsey to be honest. I am still unsure about Borini so we need a proven goalscorer.

  13. Don't be surprised if we get more than one player in today.
I'm hearing that we may get Dempsey and Sturridge....Watch this space!

  14. PPIIIIGGGS IIIIINNNNN SPPPPPAAAAACCCEEEE!!! I dont know why i just did that.
I hope we get Dempsey, surely if we have put in a bid, then he would choose Liverpool over Villa?

  15. Ramirez and Sturridge . Watch this space.

  16. I think bench warmer is slightly harsh, he scored more than Carroll, Downing, Gerrard, and maybe even Suarez in the league last season.
But I agree both would be the best!
