Last week, Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers suggested that Liverpool didn't need to sign a goalscorer, but after the club's drab 1-1 draw with Hearts earlier tonight, Rodgers seemed to have changed his mind, and promised that the club would sign a striker before the transfer deadline today.
Speaking to Reporters after the Hearts game, Rodgers explained that Andy Carroll had 'made it clear to me he hasn't played as regular as he wanted, I couldn't guarantee that', and when asked whether Carroll would be replaced, he gave the following emphatic response:
"We will replace Andy Carroll.
"We have a number of targets that we hope to conclude some deals tomorrow, but it's not always our choice."
This differs from Rodgers comments last Thursday, when he told LFC TV:
"It is no good having a goalscorer scoring 30 goals and no-one else scores. I've always been against that theory. You are going to need upwards of 70-odd goals to be up around the Champions League [places].
"You bring in one striker who can score you goals, which is great, but it's not good for the team if the rest don't score. For us it is trying to have players in different areas of the field who can cause a problem".
Rodgers change of heart is great news - I just hope one of the targets is not Daniel Sturridge. With Jordan Rhodes set to sign for Blackburn, the top striker target surely has to be Klaas Jan Huntelaar, who is definitely available, with Clint Dempsey another viable option.
Whoever comes in is going to need impervious self-confidence and a very strong mentality because the pressure to score regularly will be immense, especially in the context of Liverpool's much publicised goalscoring problems.
Hold onto your hats - it's going to be a bumpy ride tomorrow (!)

Jamie Kanwar top striker target has to be huntelaar ? how is he top striker target ? honestly he wont fit in the EPL, if he was top striker as u saying , why would real madrid let him leave so easily? why ac milan let him leave so easily?
ReplyDeletei agree Hunter it is...
ReplyDeleteI'm talking about *available* and realistic targets here. Huntelaar is available (Schalke confirmed this yesterday), and he's a realistic option.
ReplyDeleteI really wish people would stop making lame excuses like 'he didn't make it at Real Madrid' etc. His goalscoring record is amazing, and he is a natural goalscorer. That is all that matters.
Reports in Germany suggest Huntelaar is the new Liverpool striker, It was dependent on Carroll leaving. If he stayed then it would have been Dempsey, If it is Huntelaar then fantastic!!!
ReplyDeleteWhy would Huntelaar leave the Champions League for the EL's sake?!
ReplyDeleteYet more double speak....change of heart my arse.
ReplyDeleteAnyone else finding it hard to believe much of what comes out of LFC these days..?
Sorry JK but im feeling increasingly downbeat and cynical about this new set up. If anything i have had a change of heart...(a real one...)
Not happy with FSG and i don't care too much about who they bring in as striker now that im sure that those players who i believed were behind our demise last season will still be at the Club, something is not right about that, someone at the Club has been pushing a hidden agenda...
I guess it won't be long until Gerrard is outed or benched and replaced with one of our new signings.....
I can see Brendan having quite a few "changes of heart" as the season progresses....
If he's that good how come B.L. want to let him go hmmmmm !
ReplyDeleteWhy not sturridge? He did well last year under AVB..
ReplyDeleteits not only just about wether huntellar is a goal scorer ,its wether he is the type of player that can fit into the system that rogers wants to play , either way all i can say is we need to get our asses into gear and get a striker soon ,because theres no way we can go through the season with what we have got , and losing carroll makes it even harder
ReplyDeleteHuntelaar will be mentioned i hope! but there is a growing rumour about Llorente, either will make me happy
ReplyDeleteklass jan hunteelar is a predator in penalty box....his instincts are amazing and goals follow him whereevre he go....no on jst gets a name THE HUNTER, u gotta earn it
ReplyDeleteI don't understand why over the years successive Liverpool managers have failed to appreciate the need to acquire a proven goalscorer. Don't always agree with you Jaimie, but I would also prefer if we let Sturridge be. Huntelaar would be my preference, but Dempsey is more likely on the basis of cost.
ReplyDeleteSturridge is not the finished article, he is not prolific, and I doubt that he has the mentality to deal with the intense pressure of being LFC's goalscoring saviour. The club needs someone who will slot straight into the team and score goals from the word go, and Huntelaar has proved that he can score goals in 4 different leagues. Plus, he's an experienced, well-travelled international, and that experience arguably means he's more likely to be able to withstand the pressure that will inevitably come with being LFC's main goalscorer.
ReplyDeleteI've read that athletic Bilbao have dropped llorente to their reserve team as he won't sign a new deal and he hasn't featured in their opening league fixtures in la liga- he has 12 months to run on his deal. Could we possibly tempt him to lfc?!!!! That really would be awesome. He is fairly quick, skilful. Good with the ball on the deck and in the air. Plan a and b in one! Fsg have surely got to release funds for one great signing of proven ability/ experience?!
ReplyDeleteExactly. We need someone who will be in the right place and the right time, and of all the *available* options, Huntelaar is clearly the best choice.
ReplyDeleteIf we dont sign a proven goalscorer tmw we are in big trouble.....apart from suarez cannot see many goals from others within the team. Surely lfc will not make the same mistake again. Oh why oh why do we leave it till the last minute. Why have not spearing or adam gone yet to generate some funds.
ReplyDeletefor the sake of everyones sanity we need to get a new keeper 2moro.this man is making us alaughin stock .i cant even enjoy a game now cos in the back of my mind i know the fat crap keeper is goin to flog one .should have kept carroll .this style of football is boring the tits off me already
ReplyDeleteThis is make or break time for FSG; if they refuse to make funds available to sigh a quality, proven striker, the fans will not be happy, and it will ultimately cost them in the long-run because it could mean the difference between 4th place (and CL riches) 5-8th place.
ReplyDelete50 goal huntelaar and suarez back together......... Let it be so.
ReplyDeleteReina is, in my opinion, the most overrated goalkeeper in the history of football. No wonder the Barcelona fans were over the moon when the club got rid of him. He's a bloody clown.
ReplyDeletejamie so u dont think hes overweight and crap then
ReplyDeleteI agree that he's overrated. Perhaps Rodgers will stun us all tomorrow by signing a top-class keeper...
ReplyDeleteLol !!!! How does keeping Carroll make the game more exciting???????
ReplyDeleteBilly, your views are welcome here, but please try and refrain from making derogatory comments about players (I edited your other post).
ReplyDeleteReina does look like he's put some weight on, yes. He is a very good keeper, but his heart is clearly not in it anymore, hence the regular mistakes.
I am seriously hoping he will,we definitely need one!
ReplyDeleteWas just thinking, Suarez has now got 23 goals in 50 games for LFC. That's almost 0.5 per game and it's actually not so bad. Just imagine what it could've been with a bit more composure... I for one believe he's still young and can drastically improve his finishing and become Europe's top top striker in the near future.
ReplyDeletehe makes tommy lawrence look anorexic
ReplyDeleteI know we need a striker , but I'm more concerned about our goal keeper. He's howlers are starting to add up.
ReplyDeletePlease no british strikers!! When was the last time Britain produced a decent striker? After Wayne...who has since lost his shine I struggle to think of any other local striker who has maintained consistency of 2 - 3 seasons... the consistent lacklustre performance of England and the other teams from the British Isles is testament to this called hard fact. When I hear talk of Sturridge, Huntelaar, Theo, Dempsey... I shudder honestly...such players are for a manager with no ambition... compare this with the quality of the foreign legion that ply their trade in the BPL...why not try a cheeky bid for Papisse Cisse? Or for Demba Ba? Tried and tested goal scorers!! Please go and scour the french leagues, go and scour in South America and go and look in Africa, there are plenty of bargains to be found for the price of one Downing or Charlie Adam or Jordan Henderson or Carra or Stevie G. Nearly 70% of the LFC line up - mostly home grown talent acquired or retained by Kenny is absolute shyt right now. Compare this with Suarez, Agger, Skrtel, Borini...you are talking a different class.
ReplyDeleteReina is overrated but I'd argue lloris is nowhere near the keeper Reina is. Huntelaar would be a huge signing for us. Reuniting with Suarez would be the best thing that could happen for both of them and LFC would be the beneficiary.
ReplyDeleteLook people, don't you get it already, Reina and Suarez have been under performing intentionally, last season was riddled with games that we simply threw away.....
ReplyDeleteReina and Suarez will come good, because this is a part of the hidden agenda....
When Gerrard is outed or sidelined then we will start performing again.....
Get it now...? Player CLIQUE...get rid of Carroll and as much of CHAD as we can.... they had to shoulder much of the blame for us under performing....Kenny too...
Not very pretty situation really, and not very Liverpool Way either...that'll be the new set up, build the team around Suarez a player who brought more controversy to the Club than any other player i can remember in our illustrious history....
Way to go LFC.
Just hope im wrong and FSG will bring in a new GK to replace Reina and a new striker to replace Suarez....
Can't see that happening though...
the problem is he is 6ft 2in and wont fit into our new tic crap style of football . players will be fined this year if they score a header cos barca dont score headers
ReplyDeleteGood point. Its a better ratio than Huntelaar had in Italy and Spain which is only 15 in 45 games.
ReplyDeletePeople forget when talking about Huntelaar that most of his goals were scored in Holland. Suarez scored 81 in 110 games in Holland.
I agree huntelaar or dempsey, sturridge is totally out of the option
ReplyDeleteWhat a fool u are !!!!!!!!
ReplyDelete@ Mitzsu why pray tell would u want to replace Suarez...who is most consistently the only player who turns up for LFC week in week out [when he is not serving a trumped up suspension]. Just today you saw..even when he has an off day ...the lad still delivers...he tees up his team mates...he is a motor running 90 full minutes. How much can you say the same for Steve? Steve is so knackered he can even kick a straight pass anymore. You are spot on about the need to get rid of Carra Henderson Adam Downing [and I add Spearing]. However, BR looks like he is willing to do anything to accommodate these blighters. I was really grieved that this was in stark contrast to how the gaffer treat Andy...which I thought was a real disgrace...i remember how Carroll turned around the 2nd half of the FA cup last season v chelsea...in BR could have got him playing like that...he was better than all the other lot combined
ReplyDeletefor the price of one Carra or Stevie G????????
ReplyDeletehuntelaar is not gonna come because schalke are in the champions league and Liverpool fc
ReplyDeleteYeah don't worry you're completely wrong. Reina & Suarez won't be replaced though
ReplyDeleteHuntelaar hasn't prove himself in EPL but AC has already proven himself to be a flop at LFC. This is enough for us to offload AC and get Huntelaar. My guess is we only need him as a striker for 2 seasons so age is not so much of a concern. As far as credentials are concerned, I think it is great after playing for Real Madrid and AC Milan.
ReplyDeleteSo let's get him!
Mate, Suarez has been under performing, when he joined the Club he had a very positive impact, last season he had a very negative impact esp re the racist incident which brought shame to the Club and arguably helped get Kenny the sack....
ReplyDeleteIm probably one of the few LFC fans that havn't and won't forgive him for that, his performances were way below his usual standard also and much of that blame was put elsewhere....
He was intentionally missing sitters, and i believe he has been doing the same already this season....its no coincidence that he only really looked intent on scoring when his mate (Reina) fcuked up....leaving us adrift, so he suddenly sprang into action and helped resolve the situation.....
Check out his other moments in the match where he went past the keeper and should/could have slotted it home (on the right), yet he choose to keep hold of the ball and then tried to pass it into the box...??? WTF was that...?
The Carling Cup final he was doing his upmost to avoid scoring a goal, as he was in the FA Cup....it was ONLY when Carroll came on that we looked like scoring....
And for the record, i didn't see CHAD as the problem, i saw Reina Suarez Enrique along with a few others who were certainly as responsible if not more so simply because they ALL underperformed....intentionally....
breakin news fleetwood have offered reina a two year deal. a bid of two haddocks and 4 seagulls has been accepted by lfc .
ReplyDeleteMitzu are you best mates with the players involved or did you make this up yourself? Did you the jfk conspiracy theory as well? Try and keep your comments based in reality, reading rubbish like that makes people as dumb as you!
ReplyDeleteI think Brenden rodgers is a brilliant shrewd manager, tomorrow we will see two to three really good signings coming in, Klass jan huntelaar, will be the perfect player for Suarez to link up with, if he comes we will have plenty of goals this season, and maybe Gaston ramirez, could be another option? who knows, but BR could have somebody nobody has thought of / a total surprise to us all, just like he did with Aissaidi and Yesi we will no within the next 22h and 40mins cant wait.
ReplyDeleteAnd 45 goals last season is what, crap?
ReplyDeleteHuntelaar scores goals just for fun and scores more than any other player we have. So I would say he is absolutley a top target for his price at 16m.
I must say these posts are bizarre! Do you really believe what you are writing??
ReplyDeleteAccording to the Guardian, it looks like it will be Sturridge coming to LFC on loan. Hope it's wrong!
ReplyDeleteMate go sleep. U definately need a good rest.
ReplyDeleteYeah?, thats why i said it...
ReplyDeleteNot sure that anything in those comments indicates that Rodgers has had a change of heart. He's simply saying that now that Carroll has gone we'll need to replace him. The second set of comments are about not focusing explicitly on a striker with a great scoring record. None of the comments you've quoted above said that Rodgers wasn't interested in signing a striker, only that he wasn't going to sign an attacking player based only a goal scoring record. He's explaining the tactical choices he'll make in choosing an attacking player, not that we're not looking for one.
ReplyDeletelisten fella go on holiday .ur gettin hardwork .
ReplyDeleteIts no coincidence that i was highlighting certain issue's re our players and team in general on this site last season and getting nothing but scorn...just so happens that i was right in just about EVERYTHING i said....
ReplyDeleteScary that, isn't it...now go put your head back in the sand...i wouldn't want to wake you up from your oh so cosy world of reality....
Not according to Rodgers, who is the man who'll make the decision. He's made it very clear that he's not interested in a player who doesn't contribute beyond a goal scoring record. If Huntelaar (and Rhodes for that matter) are not capable of contributing in other ways then they won't be coming here. It might be an interesting discussion to suggest other methods but that's the philosophy that Rodgers will go with and it seems a bit pointless to consistently put forward suggestions that just don't fit.
ReplyDeleteYes of course i do, i really wouldn't waste my time if i didn't...
ReplyDeleteGerrard outed? What are you on about? Your brain was outed at birth and it still hasnt come back.
ReplyDeleteAnd you need to wake the fcuk up....
ReplyDeleteBeen on holiday thanks, perhaps you should listen to your own advice...?
ReplyDeleteI agree with you there on all points especially the available and realistic bits. Many good players dont always make it at a certain club but have proved themselves at other clubs and internationally, he would certainly give us the extra firepower we need.
ReplyDeleteWell it's actually 23 in 56 but still not that bad for a lad who's played as second striker most of the time.
ReplyDeleteIf liverpool keep playing football in front of the own box like thay are at the mo i can see reina getting caught out a lot this season. Is anyone eles worried about how many times our players are just booting the ball back at reina all the time. weve had one miss hap already!
ReplyDeleteI think the owners know this and they'll make a decision accordingly. It seems we sometimes demonise the owners, make them out to be faceless money grabbing fools who don't share any of our passion for the club. There really isn't any evidence for this. FSG are clearly passionate about sports, just look at the work they've done in the US. It would be really quite daft for them to have bought LFC and not be interested in seeing the club succeed at the highest possible level. If you and I can see the difference an additional star signing would make, I'm sure they can see it too. The difference is that it's their money. As fans we seem to be far less spendthrift when demanding funds come from someone else's pocket. If a successful football team ultimately requires owners to lose millions upon millions of pounds of their own money then something is wrong and I won't expect FSG to support any business model that requires that.
ReplyDeleteListen, you don't agree with what i say? Fine. I'll ignore the rest...
ReplyDeleteYou sure you're not actually Big Andy...? Think you've tied your pony-tail a bit tight there, it's not the Italian league. Missing intentionally, pfft!
ReplyDeleteHuntelaar was no failure at Real Madrid. He scored 8 goals from 13 starts.
ReplyDeleteThat's way better than Carroll and Torres(played 30+ games for their respective clubs) combined last season.
Dude, u are absolutely right over here. I don't think FSG invested very little into LFC. The amount they paid to buy the club, clear debt and the 100+ mil pounds wasted by KD. That's a huge sum of money in all! I think they are more cautious now in the transfer market after KD's reign as manager. They were taught some serious lessons about money is something very easy to blow.
ReplyDeleteAfter reading all your comments i would like to add a few points 1.Huntelaar would be good for us because he knows where the net is unlike Carroll who thinks the net is a Fishing term 2. Did i read there are no desent British Strikers well i would love to see Jermaine Defoe at Anfield just to steady the ship as he is a proven Goal Scorer who cant seem to get into the Spurs squad 3.Pepe Reina is making a few errors just recently but i think he wants to go back to Spain to end his career at the club his Dad played for so i would start giving Brad Jones a few starts 4.We need to get rid of some of the fringe players that should never of been signed or promoted (Spearing,Adams,Henderson,Cole,)5.Why not give Adam Morgan a chance as a Back up Striker it didn't do any of our other local Talent any harm (Fowler & Owen) & 6.Why not employ someone who never had any trouble finding the net as a Striker Coach let me see maybe Ian Rush as i read somewhere he scored 1 or 2 Goals for us
ReplyDeleteLink?
ReplyDeleteMy friend, I seriously think you are a fan of KD rather than LFC. Of course, I respect opinion by individuals. Personally, I think KD and DC are sent by LFC's vicious rivals to annihilate LFC, I really think so. You see, after KD ventured into the transfer market, we instantly became the laughing stock in the entire football world, paying 35 mil pounds for a young boy with laterally no top-flight football experience. Anyway, do you have an idea how much money is 35 mil pounds? For me, I don't, simply because it is way too much money for me to ever see it real in my lifetime. Now, whenever a mediocre or unproven player is linked to LFC, his owner starts to grin wickedly, which club in the world is the best to extort more money from? Certainly not Chelski or Mansour City, simply because they will only blow money for players not necessary world class, but certainly world known. I'm positively sure if KD is still the manager and
ReplyDeleteDC still the DOF combo with KD's choice of ultra-overrated,
ultra-overpriced and overpaid players, we will certainly start our
League Championship campaign in a season or two, then head straight into
administration over the next two. Till now, I'm still over the moon
about the sack of the two champions, KD
and DC.
Purposely missing sitters or avoiding scoring goals? I don't know about it. One thing about Suarez, I've never think he is the one to lead the line for LFC. Rather, his trickery shall compliment an out-an-out striker that knows how to put ball behind the net with ease, someone like Fowler, Owen or Torres. Given time, LFC will recuperate and go back to where they deserve to be. Go LFC!!!
I think tomorrow is going to be a bumpy ride like a 42 car pile-up is an exciting drive.
ReplyDeleteI'm not optimistic about tomorrow. I am looking forward to it. If Dempsey is the only first teamer we get, I wont be best pleased.
he says we will replace andy carroll, but carroll was never a goal scorer for us!
ReplyDeleteRight on !!!
ReplyDeleteits now or never if we get dempsey i for one will be not happy how this transfer window has gone fsg now need to put there money on the table and show they are the right people to take the club forward or i predict a season of discontent we have been in the words of hansen diabolicale in 4 out of 6 games so far this seaon
ReplyDeleteYou're just a little bit miserable, aren't you? I honestly can't see your problem. The players behind our demise, or at least the worst three from my point of view, were Downing, Adam and Carroll. Carroll, as much as I wanted him to do well at the club, has been poor and was rightly moved on. Adam looks like he may well be gone as well, and Downing will likely be playing off the bench for a good part of the season. With the exception of Bellamy's departure (I feel he would have been perfect on the left side for at least the next season, but he wanted to be back and Cardiff and I can't begrudge him that) and the lack of perhaps a winger/striker/both (which there is still time to fix!) this has been a pretty positive summer.
ReplyDeleteI wonder why...
ReplyDeleteI really don't understand all the negativity towards Sturridge - when Suarez is creating his own chances (and missing them) that's ok because he earned the right to miss, but when Sturridge creates his own chances, he's not allowed to shoot because he's obligated to just make the £50m flop look good?
ReplyDeleteHaha! Brilliant! I hear what you are saying though. Just give it a chance though mate. If Gerrard does not perform I can guarantee you he will get dropped. We need a manager who is strong willed.
ReplyDeleteAs a club we have to advance forward, so it's nice to have a manager who is so hands on and not messing around.
I agree. KD's flops need to be shipped out. Carroll, Downing, Cole the main culprits.
ReplyDeleteHowever all these are earning crazy wages so I don't who will go for them.
Interesting day today indeed! We need a striker urgently and another winger. Maybe a left back also.
I agree. Plus he has a rotten attitude! I think Borini on the left, Sturridge in the middle and Suarez on the right is pretty good.
ReplyDeletePrefer Huntelaar though!
I think proven goalscorers cost a lot of money, especially with the inflated prices.
ReplyDeleteThen again we have spent crazy money on flops so I guess we could have used that money to buy a proven striker.
Indeed. They should see already that BR is a way different type of caliber than KD and that he knows what he wants.
ReplyDeleteStill gutted about Rhodes, Michu and Mirallas !
That would be good but I am wondering who!
ReplyDeleteBRING BACK DUDEK! LOL
Lack of competition I say.
ReplyDeleteYour getting me worried. I hope this is not true. However, player that speak the same language tend to always form a little group! Hope this is not impacting their performance.
ReplyDeleteReally and truly it shouldn't.
Are you going to the DOOM concert in October ? With Jneiro Jerel it should be great! Back to LFC are scouting is atrocious for years I've
ReplyDeletesaid LFC have ignored French African /African /south American talent whilst everyone else benefits . I agree Dalglish was blindly xenophobic at LFC expense !
why they not go for fernando Llorente he is training with athletic club reserves and now that yuventus have confirmed the deal with bedner we have the chance to sign this world class player
ReplyDeleteGood luck big lad , would love to see you back next year banging them in for us . ENGLAND'S NUMBER NINE , every school boys dream , good luck to you too Charlie shame it never worked out , same as Jay and good luck with Chas Dingle . COME ON YOU REDS
ReplyDeleteBe fair though. Cole was not bought or used by Kenny
ReplyDeleteHunter is staying in Germany due to Afellay coming, http://www.bild.de/sport/fussball/ibrahim-afellay/kommt-vom-fc-barcelona-nach-schalke-25953154.bild.html
ReplyDeleteHe also tweeted yesterday, something like "Welcome to Germany Afellay"
Llorent would costs us wayyyy to much money.
ReplyDeleteplus he is a selfish type of player too greedy and doesn't really do anything but just attacks down the wing cut in and shoot
ReplyDeleteLeandro Damiao has been offered to Liverpool, according to this guy from the Daily Mail, Sami Mokbel, here's a link to his Twitter feed;
ReplyDeletehttps://twitter.com/SamiMokbel81_DM
Says the deal is £3m loand fee, £13m next summer for permanent transfer.
Again, like all stories on deadline day (or any other day) to be taken with a pinch of salt and crossed fingers that this is true.
Beat me to it! just in the process of writing something about this.
ReplyDeleteIt's the only source I've found on this one, Jaimie, but it would be a real coup if we did sign him. I'm quietly confident that we are because it's quiet, like it used to be.
ReplyDeletehttp://www.bild.de/sport/fussball/ibrahim-afellay/kommt-vom-fc-barcelona-nach-schalke-25953154.bild.html
ReplyDeleteJust read on German paper, Bild, that Huntelaar is happy at Schalke now that Afellay has joined him.
Please everybody ignore Mitzu. He doesn't mean what he say's
ReplyDeletePlease name one thing you predicted correctly. I do remember you saying that if Dalglish was not at the club this season you would not support LFC anymore. Please honour your promise and go away
ReplyDeleteHey Arabee - Even if it's different to the majority, Mitszu is entitled to his view, so please remain civil :-)
ReplyDeleteIt would be amazing if we could sign Damiao - what a lift that would be for everybody :-)
ReplyDeleteJaimie he is accusing some of our players of criminal activity without one shard of evidence.
ReplyDeleteFound this on Twitter;
ReplyDeleteLeandro Damiao - 'I am delighted announce that I will hold talks with#LFC , Lucas spoke to myself a lot I am enthusiastic
Not sure of authenticity and, being 39 years old and a reasonably clever bloke, I should know better than to speculate but hey, it's deadline day and anything can happen!
that 2 weeks in ashworth didn t do u much good then !!
ReplyDeleteTwitter is going mental about this story, let's just hope that it's true!
ReplyDeleteLorente would be a better option, maybe more costly but deffo better quality. Just out of interest were was huntelar prolific?? Just an observation but i dont think he cut it at Milan or Madrid, being prolific in the dutch league can be misleading. Kuyt would be a good
ReplyDelete
