At the end of the Fulham game recently, Luis Suarez made an 'obscene gesture', allegedly in the direction of the crowd. In January 2010, Gary Neville was photographed making an obscene gesture at Carlos Tevez. Suarez was charged; Neville wasn't, which seems unfair. As such, I contacted the FA to find out why Man United's Neville escaped a charge, or if indeed he was even investigated.
There's no evidence to suggest that Neville was officially investigated for the middle-finger salute at Tevez, and the FA's statement on the issue seems to confirm this.
There rules on obscene gestures seem to be a little inconsistent, which is why I approached the FA for official clarification. A spokesperson for the FA stated:
"With regards to player-on-player gestures, the view is that generally speaking retrospective action is rarely likely to be appropriate, although not ruled out together, or indeed proportionate given that players are seen to berate and engage with each other in relatively strong terms.
"With Suarez's gesture towards the crowd, there was a potential of incitement and as such there is a responsibility of all participants to refrain from inflammatory actions which could lead to crowd problems.
"Taking all this into consideration, the Football Association deemed that the behaviour of the player in question [Gary Neville] was not deemed to have been a breach of conduct".
So, according to the FA, it's perfectly okay for players to go around making obscene gestures at other players (!)
Past FA decisions seem to suggest that Suarez should receive no more than a fine, but if he's banned, it would be understandable given the 'crowd incitement' issue.

But no Fulham fans reported it did they??
ReplyDeleteYawnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn
ReplyDeleteFA are idiots!
ReplyDeletenevilles finger came out of tevez a..
ReplyDeleteHey Jamie, did you ask the FA why they didn't charge stevie g's two-fingure gesture to the ref? I thought so.
ReplyDeleteHey 19 did you get your intellect out of a lucky packet? Thought so....
ReplyDeleteHey Jaimie...your title tempts people to click on the link..but the content reveals little. I support Liverpool , but write only if you've got something to write..Please.
ReplyDeleteFA= Hypocritical
ReplyDeleteFunny when Gerrard was saying before the World Cup about how players shouldn't swear at refs and how they should be respected, considering his past.
ReplyDeleteThe FA says there is the "potential for incitement" when a player gestures towards the crowd. Try this scenario: Rooney pulls an obscene gesture to our beloved Suarez! The FA doesn't think there is the potential for incitement by the crowd in such an instance! Me thinks they're clutching at straws! Get real FA - no-one's buying it!
ReplyDeleteLook, if you don't like the site go elsewhere. I'm sory, but I'm not interested in your moaning. This article reveals a lot, actually:
ReplyDelete* It gets the FA on the record over how it deals with obscene gestures.
* It establishes that the FA did not investigate Neville's gesture
* It provides an official reason why Suarez was charged and Neville wasn't.
If that's not good enough for you then, as I said, you're welcome to visit another site.
Hey Jevon (is that a name?), at least I've got some intellect. As for you ...
ReplyDeleteyou are full of crap
ReplyDeleteits clear what g nev did is different, stop being so bitter against united, even when one of yer players do something wrong u still have to bring up utd, maybe u should just support utd u would probably be much happier
ReplyDeleteyes yer beloved racist suarez
ReplyDeletewhat happened to **LUIS SUAREZ IS A CHEAT** Jaimie?? You sir, are the hypocrite.
ReplyDeletewhy don't man utd fans go post on their own sites... they are obsessed with us
ReplyDeleteah now, there is no point in looking too far back to gary neville. The important precedent here is when rooney was banned for swearing into the camera. From that point on then this sort of thing is always going to get punished. And to be fair, it probably should.
ReplyDeletesuarez is a filthy racist, and a scumbag everyone new that before he even joined the pool. incase ye didnt no he got sent off for biting someone a few months before ye idiots signed him, so that makes three nasty things in one year, and somehow ye think he is being victimised.
ReplyDeleteBecause you keep bringing up our (former) players in your stupid arguments.
ReplyDeletethe word he used is not racist in south america, so get your facts right, I should know as I have a mate from argentina and he thinks its laughable. Evra is the scumbag as he has already lied about Finnan and I think the Chelsea groundsman too and is making a meal out of this just because he plays for us, if it was a small team he would of just laughed it off. He is the boy who cried wolf and will always be remembered for it. And as for putting fingers up to the crowd, it has been done hundreds of times in the past, it's not even worth talking about.
ReplyDeletemaybe in argentina its not supposed to be racist but following someone around the pitch calling them negredo when you barely know them is asking for trouble no matter where ur from. I think he was using it as an insult because he has lived in europe long enough to no that u dont use words like that. if he went around the streets in england using that word when talking to people he would be asking for serious trouble. he is either incredibely stupid or he is racist. putting fingers up at the crowd when ur a highly paid pro is also very stupid especialy when u might already be getting one ban, even if it has been done before doesnt make it acceptable in his case.
ReplyDeleteSoooooo boooooooorrrrrinnnng plz let this story go away double standards all the time when it comes too racism a white man is white a black man is black FACT!!!!
ReplyDeleteHe hardly followed him round the pitch calling him it. If he had of done there'd have been some TV evidence, which there isn't. Also if I remember correctly it was Evra who was chasing Suarez' shadow.
ReplyDeleteIt is a open secret that Fergi has a big say in FA. But it is all soon gonna change. Govt has already given them ultimatum.
ReplyDeleteI doubt Evra even knew what it meant before he filed a complaint, he probably feels stupid now but has to carry on with the case. I believe Suarez will get a 3 match ban or something as the FA need to make an example of someone so any cases that come up in the future will be sorted out quicker and they will know how to deal with any 'racist' comments complaints.
ReplyDeleteSorry Stiofain....clearly you haven't seen the youtube clip of Evra clearly calling JF Hasselbaink a Negrito....!!! That's what you call a hypocrite...so learn some facts before calling another player a racist when your own player is videoed using the exact same expression about a fellow footballer. You sir are an idiot.
ReplyDeleteWhat does the word yer mean....I can't seem to find a definition for it in the dictionary. Is this the level of intelligence we can expect from Utd Fans. !!! Lol.
ReplyDeletecalling him NEGREDO ?? So your actually saying now that all Suarez has done is made a mistake and thought Evra was the Seville striker?? and not the bloke who accuses everyone (Finnan,Chelsea groundstaff,Referee) of being racists??
ReplyDeleteHaha, if ye going to come on a liverpool site, get ye facts right you knuckle dragging beaut!
Firstly the word is knew...not new...your wording means it's just been created....which makes no sense...Ye, again has no expression.. I think the word you are looking to use there is YOU, followed then by know...not no, which then brings us back to you using the word ye again...maybe you're a town crier....hear ye...hear ye...either that or you're just an illiterate manc. Either way, stop embarrassing yourself and go back to studying the queens english before you make a bigger fool of yourself.
ReplyDeleteHey stupid, go to http://oxforddictionaries.com/definition/yer?q=yer and try to learn something!
ReplyDeletehttp://oxforddictionaries.com/definition/yer?q=yer. Use the Oxford dictionary, not the scouser one ;)
ReplyDeleteWhat about when Neville ran the length of the pitch to goad the Liverpool fans after the mancs snuck in another one of their late winners in the 53rd minute of injury time? Was that inciting the crowd?
ReplyDeleteOr when Adebayor did the same thing to Arsenal fans?
In respect of the FA's statement, both these actions were far more inflammatory than Suarez's gesture. Singling out Suarez in light of many other previous players indiscretions can certainly be considered as prejudice.
Unfortunately footballing governing bodies are a lot like the North Korean government - Run by egomaniacs, riddled to the core with corruption and wholly and completely out of touch with the rest of the populace - and as such will never truly be able to impartially administer justice.
Shouldn't you be conentrating on the Bolton game tonight!!!!!
ReplyDeleteArgentina?????????Blackburn manager what a Loser!!!
ReplyDeletehttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a5dkuOU8a3E
ReplyDeleteAlso Diouf when he was warming up at Ewood park winding the Liverpool fans up, is that not inciting the crowd? Whatdid he get for spitting at an 11 year old middlesborough fan. Or what about sayin to a White ball boy 'f&£k off White boy'. He was never done for that. Or is it only racism if it's not directed at White people?????
ReplyDeleteKinda double standards here when you consider the sending off offences as listed in the Laws of Association Football include:
ReplyDelete"Using offensive, insulting or abusive language and/or gestures" ... and when I trained as a referee it was made clear that these were red card offences NO MATTER WHO they were directed towards ...
So the FA are implying that Gary Neville should not be punished for committing a stone wall dismissal offence.
To all the utd fans who posted comments on here about Suarez and the situation - what about Evra gesturing to the Liverpool fans repeatedly kissing his badge which evidently is incitement do you believe he should receive the same punishment that Suarez receives? Or are you gonna give an excuse as to why he shouldnt? Pull your heads out of each others arses and realise the fa haven't got a fucking clue between them!
ReplyDelete19 you prick
ReplyDeleteFerguson agency that's all
ReplyDeleteF ergies A llies you can expect nowt else from those completely incompetentant bunch of pricks. So can we expect similiar for Mr Terry ... me thinks not ... after all England expects ..... jog on
ReplyDeletewhat a tool. Read your statement then read the story these comments are about. The question sir is why you spend your time looking for negative press regards liverpool rather than concentrating on your own club
ReplyDeleteBased on no evidence not even by ur own players. THe decision was made by a jury style verdict of word vs word. One such party (as shown in the press) is a known friend of SAF and has him mentioned as such in his book yet he was on the panel.
ReplyDeleteFixed jury, punished with no evidence other than word vs word. Disgracefull, yet even with video evidence Terry still awaits decisions and gets no mention.
ReplyDeleteSuarez has been used as a scapegoat for the FA to look strong on racism so they cant be called hypocrites while they call for blatters head.
There is a lot of this going on at the moment and the decisions on action seem to depend on who it is rather than what actually happened or is proven to have happend.
Most neutrals have shown disgust in this decision and/or amazed/puzzled as to how this has been found as such.
Manu fans will all say its the right decision as they always do and never have i seen them agree that one of there's were in the wrong or admit a rival player wasn't.
Liverpool fans, have lambasted their own however in the past for stupidity and if evidence is brought to show he was racist would be the same now how ever no one has any reason to believe it.
Oh and biting someones ear or saving a goal does not mean one is bound to be a racist too by default cos they are, how scum fans put it "a naughty boy".
Isnt the person that gave suarez sentence ex Man united man and he is great friends with sir alex ferguson fact
ReplyDeletefor gods sake this is a mans sport is it patrick or pathetic evra. Ihope fergie doesnt let him out after 7 oclock you never know what his sensitive ears might pick up in manchester in bed by 7 with your teddy patrick oops pathetic
ReplyDelete2 sets of rules apply, one for the scums and the other for the rest. I can still remember vividly the kung fu kick by one scum almost went off scot free.
ReplyDeleteHey Rick .. what about Gerrard scoring a stupid lucky goal and showing united fans the 5 ?? Isn't that inciteful. As for Tevez, its a personal matter between 2 players - had Tevez complained the FA would have looked into it. Yea Rick, Fergie's running the FA. You have no future. Guess who's head is up his ass. Anyways Suarez is guilty, and to all those who (wrongly) claimed that Evra was lying ... Haha !!!
ReplyDeleteFA is an idiot organisation. Is an SAF puppet organisation. God Damn You SAF and blackie evra!
ReplyDeleteThey really an idiot organisation. SAF as well with his blackie evra are also idiots!
ReplyDeleteWell like I've said, you put in a rule and set precedence, ensure you maintain consistency and fair application of it. It does look like Liverpool has got a fair bit of this inconsistencies but I'd like to see this as something to bring unity to the club. I think Arsenal had those moments and they were closely knit to the common purpose of the club. Some positives would be (1) Carroll would get a chance now (2) KD & Comolli can bring their plans forward to secure a goal-scorer in Jan (3) The team would be closely knit and stronger mentally (4) Suarez may finally get a belated summer break now (he's been rather jaded lately I'm just afraid he may breakdown)
ReplyDeleteYou are an ignorrant cock , crawl back into the hole you crawled out of .
ReplyDeleteI think you should learn to speak and write in english before posting any more comments . Mind you that would be a first a manc that could speak and write in english .
ReplyDeleteDo you have the FA quote in writing? Players "berate each other in relatively strong terms" would seem to be the very rule that Luis was charged under?
ReplyDeleteidiot FA should ban not suarez! FA really shit management! useless org..
ReplyDeleteVery well...u deleted my comment! Sad to see that , u delete comments that show u in a bad image!!
ReplyDeleteNeville vs Tevez = no charge
ReplyDeleteFowler vs Le Saux = tickets please!
