Anfield MegaDeal: Carra insists Liverpool 'need' to sign 'superb £60m star. Massive offer made already by CFC

Reds legend Jamie Carragher has urged Jurgen Klopp to consider signing a new central defender this month.

In his latest column for the Daily Mail, Carra suggested that Klopp should spend '£40m' on Southampton star Virgil Van Dijk, and explained why the deal is necessary:

"Matip has fitness issues, as does Lovren. If Klopp wants someone in January, he has to be backed, as the stakes could get very big for Liverpool in 2017. I still think he needs a defender".

The good news is that 'superb' Van Dijk may not cost as much as £40m. According to Sky Sports:

"Southampton could struggle to keep hold of Virgil van Dijk in January as he has a buy out clause of £25m".

Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf has also confirmed the £25m clause, and further claimed:

"Liverpool have sent scouts to watch Van Dijk every week for the last two months. They want to sign him in January, and are willing to pay £25m".

£25m is certainly more palatable than £40m, and is more in line with the prices Liverpool paid for Sakho and Lovren. That said, as Liverpool proved with Luis Suarez, buyout clauses are generally worthless these days, and if reports are true that Chelsea have tabled a £60m bid, then Liverpool are already out of this particular race.
