Disaster for Klopp? 'Amazing' €53m Liverpool star out injured until next year. Will miss City and Sunderland games

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has provided an injury update on Philippe Coutinho, and it's not good news.

On December 1st, a few days after sustaining his ankle injury, Jurgen Klopp suggested that Coutinho will be out until mid-January, but soon after, a statement on the official Liverpool FC website claimed:

"Philippe Coutinho is targeting Liverpool's meeting with Manchester City on New Year's Eve for his return to action".

Coutinho also insisted he was ahead of schedule:

"My hope is to return for this game. The rehab is going really well. I can now walk without crutches and I am working well with the medical team. So I'm pleased with how I am recovering."

Well, Jurgen Klopp has put the stoppers on a possible early return. When asked today about Coutinho's chances of making the Man City game, he told reporters:

"No, but he’s in a good way. The City game for sure is too early, and I'm pretty sure the Sunderland game is too early too".

Coutinho is a miss for any team, but Liverpool are scoring goals and winning games without him right now, so it's clearly not a huge problem. The Reds no longer have to rely on just one play anymore, and with Daniel Sturridge fit again, and Firmino back on the scoresheet after a 9-hour barren spell, Liverpool are in good shape ahead of Saturday's crunch clash with City.

* Coutinho: €53m-rated (CIES Football Observatory). Hailed as 'amazing' by Joel Matip.
