After three years as Liverpool's first-choice goalkeeper, it looks like the end is finally nigh for Simon Mignolet.
On Thursday, Reds legend Jan Molby insisted that Mignolet deserves to 'continue' as the club's number one, but Jurgen Klopp doesn't appear to agree. According to the Liverpool Echo today:
"Loris Karius has won the battle to be Liverpool’s No 1 [and] will make his Premier League debut on Saturday. The ECHO understands that the keepers were informed about the decision on Friday".
This is great for Karius, but he now has to rise to the challenge. The Premier league is a totally different level of pressure to the League Cup, and Karius will now have to deal with the same level of scrutiny to which Mignolet is regularly subjected. God help him if he makes goal-creating mistake on his debut (!)
This change can only be bad news for Mignolet. Top teams do not chop and change when it comes to goalkeepers, and if Karius performs well, Mignolet may spend the rest of the season on the bench.
It's hard to have sympathy for the sporadically 'brilliant' Mignolet, though. He had three years to make the position his own, but in the words of The Dude:
^ Karius: reportedly on £60k-a-week.
