Anfield Update: Reds hero confirms £190k-a-week 'genius' was desperate to join 'Liverpool'

Despite his serial success, Jose Mourinho remains reviled by a large section of LFC fans, but according to ex-Red Danny Murphy, Mourinho once came very close to signing for Liverpool.

Speaking to TalkSport this week, Murphy claimed:

"When Benitez was appointed, it was between him and Mourinho. I know that for a fact. Mourinho wanted the Liverpool job and was massively disappointed [not to get it]".

Benitez took over at Liverpool in 2004, and the same year, Mourinho arrived at Stamford Bridge, and swiftly guided Chelsea to their first league title in 50 years. Chelsea then retained the title a year later, and Mourinho went on to become the most successful manager in the world.

As Zlatan Ibrahimovic said last month: 'If you want to win, you get Mourinho'. Say what you like about the guy, but he is a serial winner, and I have absolutely no doubt that Liverpool would've won the title on Mourinho's watch.

Mourinho plus Gerrard, Carragher, Hyypia (and quality new signings) = title winning team. Would Mourinho - hailed last month as a 'genius' by Ray Wilkins - fit in at Liverpool, though? According to Gerrard:

"Mourinho is one of the best managers in the world, so of course he would be a good fit [for Liverpool]”

Obviously, with Mourinho in charge, the miracle of Istanbul would never have happened, but I'm sure a league title (or two) would've compensated for that, especially for Steven Gerrard, who sadly left Anfield having never won the league.

^ Reportedly on £190k-a-week at Man Utd.
