Transfer Surprise: Liverpool 6/4 favourites to sign 'incredible' £37m star who confirmed Klopp 'texts'

After several seemingly emphatic statements of denial, Liverpool's proposed move for Mario Gotze appears to be dead in the water, but rather surprisingly, the Reds remain favourites to sign the £37m-rated German attacker this summer.

On May 25th, Germany boss Joachim Low claimed that Gotze had rejected 'offers' to leave Bayern Munich, and decided to stay at at the club:

"He [Gotze] told me he wants to stay in Munich and take his chance with the new coach. It’s the right decision for him".

Gotze^ - hailed by Low for his 'incredible' skills - then told Bild:

"I look forward to the new season and will do everything to be in top shape under Carlo Ancelotti".

A day later, Gotze's agent noted:

“I don’t know anything about a transfer to Liverpool. Mario is my son, and I would know about it.”

Despite these seemingly unambiguous statements, Liverpool reportedly scouted Gotze during Germany's weekend friendly against Hungary, and Sky Bet claim today that the Reds remain 6/4 favourites to sign Gotze during the summer transfer window.

Even if Liverpool retain hope of completing a transfer, I just can't see it happening, and German legend Lothar Matthaus has already outlined the reason why:

"Why would he [Gotze] join a club that does not even play in the Champions League?"

Despite SkyBet's claim, the odds appear to be stacked against Liverpool, but stranger things have happened. Can Klopp can pull this deal out of the fire, or is it all over?
