Anfield MegaDeal: Liverpool free to sign 'fabulous' €50m attacker who wants LFC transfer 'approach'

Last week, The Guardian claimed that Mario Gotze remains one of Jurgen Klopp's top transfer targets, and new reports this week suggest that Liverpool now have a very strong chance of signing the €50m-rated German attacker this summer.

According to Sky Sports today:

"Mario Gotze is being watched by both Liverpool and Man Utd. Bayern Munich are willing to offload [him] in the summer after failing to live up to his hype".
ESPN further claimed:

"Bayern are fed up with Gotze and are ready to sell him to the highest bidder".

Gotze recently hailed Klopp as a 'very good coach' and waxed lyrical about their 'outstanding cooperation' at Dortmund, and when asked specifically about Liverpool, he mused:

"You should ask Klopp if he wants me at Liverpool. If he wants me, he should approach me".

Gotze is a prime example of the dangers of overhype. Since the World Cup final, he's been hyped to a ridiculous degree, with Germany boss Joachim Low leading the way with his irresponsible claim that Gotze is a miracle player who can be 'better than Messi'.

Unsurprisingly, Gotze - described by Mats Hummels as a 'fabulous footballer - has failed to live up to that billing, and after only 11 appearances this season, his Bayern career appears to be running on fumes.

Is Klopp the man to rejuvenate Gotze's career? Prior to losing him to Bayern Munich, Klopp brought him through Dortmund's youth system and into the first team (where he helped BVB win the league), so it'll makes sense if Liverpool make a move for him this summer.

Plus, with 34 goals/22 assists (56) in 104 games for Bayern (One every 122 minutes), it's clear that - under the right circumstances - Gotze is capable of contributing goals/assists on a regular basis.

€50m, though? That seems excessive, but that's probably what it'll cost to secure Gotze's signing, especially if he performs well for German at the European Championships this summer.
