Since July 2014, injured Liverpool defender Jon Flanagan has spent a whopping 495 days on the sidelines, but according to Reds boss Jurgen Klopp, the 22-year old's injury nightmare is close to being over.
When asked on Friday about Flanagan's rehabilitation, Klopp told reporters:
"We will just have to wait. Recovery and rehab needs time.
"[Jordan] Henderson and [Jon] Flanagan are much closer.
"Flanagan is back on the training pitch but he needs time after long, long time out with his injury."
In August, Brendan Rodgers claimed that Flanagan is 'on target to return just before Christmas', and when asked in October about his recovery, the Scouse defender confirmed that timeframe:
"It’s been going well. It’s obviously been a frustrating time since last year when I got the injury. I’m back running now and hopefully I can push on and get back in the team in a couple of months".
If Flanagan - described as 'outstanding' by West Ham legend Tony Gale - returns around Christmas, and manages to stay fit, then it could have a negative impact on Joe Gomez's chances sealing a regular starting place.
With Clyne, Moreno, and Flanagan in the squad (all of whom are dedicated full-backs) Gomez - who is also recovering from a long-term injury - may fall down the pecking order.
There's always centre-back, but Liverpool are oversubscribed in that position, too.
As for Flanagan: He's only on a one year deal, so it's vital that he stays fit. If he picks up another injury on his return, it could be curtains for his Anfield career.
On a related note: It's also great to hear that Hendo is on the comeback trail. The sooner her returns to the team and replaces Emre Can, the better. Possible lineup with Hendo:
------------- Mignolet
Clyne --- Skrtel - Sakho ---- Moreno
---------- Lucas - Hendo
- Lallana --- Firmino -- Coutinho
------------- Benteke
