Over the years, Liverpool have been regularly linked with a move for Stoke goalkeeper Jack Butland, and according to ex-Red Jamie Redknapp, Butland is now one of the best 'keepers in the Premier League. Could he be possible option to replace Simon Mignolet?
During Brendan Rodgers' reign, Liverpool reportedly held talks with Birmingham over a move for Butland, who is now Stoke's number-one goalkeeper.
After watching the 22-year old's performance against Newcastle at the weekend, Redknapp hailed Butland as 'magnificent', and further enthused:
"He [Butland] is playing with real confidence. He has matured and never looks like making a silly mistake [and] his saves won Stoke a valuable point. Good goalkeepers are hard to find but the good news for England is that now we have two".
Like most players in Liverpool's squad, Mignolet is enjoying a slight boost in performance after the arrival of Jurgen Klopp, but the Reds can't rest on laurels, and I maintain that he needs to be replaced.
Is Butland a viable option, though? His stats for Stoke:
* 29 goals conceded in 23 apps (1.2 goals per game)
* Concedes a goal every 70 minutes.
* 6 clean sheets (1 every 4.8 games)
* This season: 13 goals conceded in 12 games (1 every 85 mins - 3 clean sheets)
* Mignolet 15 goals conceded in 14 games (1 every 84 minutes - 4 clean sheets)
Butland's stats compare favourably with Mignolet's this season, but FC Koln star Timo Horn - who is currently linked with Liverpool - is outperforming them both.
As is always the case, any English player with a modicum of talent will be grossly overpraised to high heaven, and the hype over Butland - who, according Birmingham's Chairman, is worth £15m - is already on the boil.
In this case, I'd rather stick with Mignolet until the Reds can sign a truly top-class goalkeeper.
