Done Deal? After Friday medical, Liverpool to sign £8m powerhouse. Release-clause triggered

Liverpool are reportedly on the verge of signing Charlton starlet Joe Gomez, who is set to become the club's fourth signing of the summer.

On Monday, Liverpool Echo reported:

* The Reds have 'tracked Gomez extensively' for over three years.

* Negotiations for 18-year old Gomez are now at an 'advanced stage', and the deal is will 'be completed early next week'.

* Liverpool are 'expected' to pay £6m for Gomez, though the Daily Mail claimed in May that Charlton will not let him go for anything less than £8m.

* Gomez is 'desperate' to join Liverpool, and is 'already preparing' for the move.

Today, the Echo further claims:

"Gomez is set to undergo a medical at Liverpool on Friday ahead of becoming the Reds’ fourth signing of the summer.

"He is due on Merseyside in the next 24 hours, after Liverpool triggered a release clause in the Londoner’s contract"

Some info about Gomez:

* Can play as a right back or centre back.

* 24 appearances for Charlton Athletic last season.

* Part of the England side which won the 2014 European U17 Championships last summer (and named in the team of the tournament)

* His idol is former Manchester United star Rio Ferndinand. In December, he told reporters:

"I always looked up to Ferdinand when I was younger because he was an English centre-back at the top level - plus he was a ball-playing one too".

* 2015: Nominated for the Championship's Apprentice of the Year award. Reacting to the nomination, he enthused:

"It's been a great experience and nothing I expected when I began to be involved in the first team in pre-season. I look forward to pushing on. There's still a lot of hard work for me to do".

Liverpool are three-for-four so far: Four signings; three Brits (plus one Brit-based played in Adam Bogdan), and in my view, none of them are good enough to propel the Reds into the Champions League, which is absolutely imperative for the club next season.

If Henderson, Coutinho, Gerrard, Sterling, and Lallana cannot perform well enough to achieve a Champions League spot for Liverpool, it's highly unlikely that Milner, Ings, Bogdan, and Gomez - all arguable comparatively inferior players - will make the difference.

As for Gomez - even his own manager at Charlton - Guy Luzon - doubts the youngster's ability to make the step-up. In May, he told Kent Online:

"I don’t think if he [Gomez] signed for a Premier League club he would play, and at his age he needs games"

According to the Liverpool Echo, though, Gomez is 'confident he can prove himself worthy of Liverpool’s senior squad during pre-season at Anfield'.

We'll see, I guess.

  1. He will be loaned out it maybe for as many as 2 seasons but you can only hope he is worth the wait.

  2. why cant we spend our money on players that can improve the team now and enable us compete at the top?

    ReplyDelete
  3. Good question.. Maybe you can ask BR and FSG that..

    ReplyDelete
  4. Bogdan is Hungarian not British. Just saying.

  5. How many times are we going to make same mistakes. We needed a striker who can score goals (not Ings) and we are collecting defenders now? We also need a manager who knows what he's doing, not changing systems to confuse players. Lovren was a decent defender in Southampton and you don't become a complete dweeb in 4 games. It's something to do with the system and training in defence. Obviously the Americans have no idea what they are doing. So the best way is to limit the mistakes by buying cheap useless players.

    ReplyDelete
  6. I agree with most of what you have said but IMO, Lovren doing bad has nothing to do with the system. He was never that good and was only hyped up by the media because he played for Southampton, the media darlings. Before that, he was voted as one of the worst players to play for Lyon ever.

  7. Of all the signings we have made so far this one is by far the most exciting. Admittedly we would probably won't see him run out in a red shirt for a year or two but this guy has absolutely massive potential. I've got a few good mates who are big Charlton fans and they rate this guy incredibly highly and think we have made an absolute steal if we get him for the reported price. That being said we do need some here and now signings and not just potential.

  9. Stats will tell you he was the best defender in the EPL last season ? Hope he comes good this season !

    ReplyDelete
  10. Haha!! Was he not 12th best in Europe as well?

    ReplyDelete
  11. Agree, but were not going to sign a striker unless Balotelli goes, not going to start the season with Sturridge, Balotelli , Ings , Origi & anothe

  12. The fee quoted in this article is incorrect.

It's been widely reported that he will cost £3.5 million: the release clause in his contract - as reported by the Echo, the mirror, the express, ESPN and numerous other sources.

    ReplyDelete
  13. The fee is not incorrect. According to Charlton's owner, the club wants £8m, and the link for this is in the article.

  16. I know we under performed last season but if we get those full back positions addresses I think we're are in reasonable shape...would be nice to get a beast striker in also...I like signing young English talent... just look at ibe and sterling...already 40 mil profit...hoping these new coaches can get best out of last summers signings!! Some of spurs signings improved last season!

There is no quote in the article. Daily mail is not a very reliable source. It will probably be somewhere in between.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Whyn is the Daily Mail 'not a very reliable source'. According to whom?

If it's so unreliable, why does Jamie Carragher writes a regular column for the Mail? Many other ex-Reds have written for the Mail, too, including Redknapp, McManaman, Dalglish, Souness, and many others.

If it's good enough for Carra, it's good enough for me. I may not like the Mail's political slant, but when it comes to football, it's often a reliable source.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Might be a good Buy and loan scenario, i haven't seen much of him at all. so i don't know what he brings to the table that we currently don't already have and by what we currently have i am refering to Manquilo, Wisdom and Flannigan not Sterling, Ibe and Marcovic :P

    ReplyDelete
  20. Outstanding player.

    ReplyDelete
  21. And nothing special for Croatia too.. Losing his spot to anonymus players..

    ReplyDelete
  22. Only mentions the owner wanting £8million for him and owners always get a bit carried away with themselves on player values.
I'll be pleased if this goes through, he looks a very promising young player and we often miss out to chelski et al on these 'wonderkids' - then nobodies happy but now it looks like we're about to land one...

    ReplyDelete
  23. Daily Mail also say we are offered cash plus either Dzeko, Joveta or Negredo. I'd take 25 mill and either in a heartbeat..

    ReplyDelete
  24. I thought Negredo looked good for city, not as mobile as Sturridge but an upgrade on what we have.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Cause we haven't signed a bloody marquee before window even opens. Unbefcukinliverpool..

    ReplyDelete
  26. Orme may have answered it.
Are u not embarrassed with this underwhelming transfers so far?

    ReplyDelete
  27. The fee is £3,5M according to the very reliable Guardian

    ReplyDelete
  28. Define a marquee player

    ReplyDelete
  29. With you one this one Jamie.

When it comes to sports in general the Mail is in my opinion the best newspaper there is.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Nicolas Chamberlain7:14 pm, June 18, 2015

That doesn't make it a reliable source when it comes to transfers...
Im not saying they are the Sun, or anything like that but you only have to look at the right part of their website to see that the Daily Mail is definitely not a quality paper. Maybe there are some stats available that can give an indication of Daily Mail's trustworthiness...

    ReplyDelete
  31. No I'm pretty happy so far, although if the window shut tomorrow and that had been it, I'd be pretty p*ssed off, not embarrassed though.

  32. and yet ANOTHER 12 year old ...

    ReplyDelete
  33. Ings can't even get a start for the U21s .. another LEMON!

    ReplyDelete
  34. Good thing we had a couple of million lying around to spend on a player for the future to have in case the other for the future defenders we have dont work out. You never know, Ilori may not be Ricardo Carvalho after all

    ReplyDelete
  35. Happy with re ings, Bogdan, Gomez etc.... Good luck then.
So, u genuinely believe they will take us to another level? Well, I'm not at all impressed.
*Rodgers is having negative effect in my personal life.. Once i remember him, I didn't see anything to believe he's taking the club forward.
At this rate, i will take back old woy

    ReplyDelete
  36. This is how it is with buying young players. Some work out, some don't. That's just the way it is.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Mail's not that reliable though;-)

    ReplyDelete
  38. new doggie Stu?

    ReplyDelete
  39. The Beast, think he went on a great run season before last when Aguero was injured, couldn't stop scoring. Then when Aguero came back Pellegrini dropped him like a stone and even when Sergio was injured again he seemed to favour the other two strikers Orme mentions.
I think maybe Negredo has become a bit injury prone himself now too and is perhaps a touch older than ideal, also not sure he perfectly fits our system. Having said that, the way City shunned him after signing Bony may have left him with a point to prove and perhaps that would make him a dangerous Beast.
Even as part of a swap deal though he would probably eat up a sizable chunk of our transfer kitty so would we be happy with him as our main summer striker, not sure, as you say though barring a fit Studge he'd be a definite upgrade on what we currently have.

    ReplyDelete
  40. true but we have no idea if Ilori is any good.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Gomez is actually a half decent kid who I think will make the grade

    ReplyDelete
  42. Why don't we just change the team crest to the three lions and get it over with... at least we would have a long history of losing to go with the new team logo and the recent decade of losing...

    ReplyDelete
  43. Yes very happy with Ings and Gomez, Bogdan - I won't say it's the most exciting transfer know to mankind but nevertheless it's good business IMO and should be taken in context - trouble is we don't know what context that is yet because we could still bring in another keeper to either challenge or replace Mignolet.
Ings will get at least a dozen goals next season which makes him an excellent signing and one that will *help* us toward the next level.
Brendan is the dogs danglies - he must be because we very nearly won the Premier League for the first time ever with his guidance and not only that but we were spectacularly good to watch and that covers the only two things I want us to do - win and look good doing it.

    ReplyDelete
  46. with regards the main summer striker. I've mentioned before, we're not going into the season with 5 strikers, so its all on Balotelli leaving.

Samporia chairmen comments about prohibitive wages are true for all clubs in Italy. Just can't see him leaving.

Could be heading into the season with him, ings ,origi & sturridge back in September having hardly played in a year.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Nicolas Chamberlain8:34 pm, June 18, 2015

No use in replying anymore if I'm not allowed to make my point about the lack of trustworthiness when it comes to the Daily Mail and transfer news. All those ex-Reds doesn't make the Daily Mail a reliable source. Im not saying they are the Sun but you only have to look at the right side of their pages... Or the countless times they are just making stuff up.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Think you're right, the more that leave the more we'll bring in.
We seem to be doing our best to find a home for Balo, agree though his wages may be a pill too bitter for any Club to swallow, let alone an Italian one, I can see a loan deal looming which is not what we want at all, but perhaps/hopefully that would be good enough to be able to bring in a new Striker.
Really hope it doesn't drag on like last summer and then fizzle into nothing, I'm quietly confident things are going to work out ok this time round though, we know from past actions FSG don't muck around so I think they'll do whatever is required...
Maybe Balo just goes missing for a while...

    ReplyDelete
  49. Do you remember against Bayern Case? everything about that goal was genius

    ReplyDelete
  50. Yeah. I enjoyed 2013/14 exciting football to...i for once thought he's the best manager in the world, now, coming to realize it was a "fluke" .
*A top quality manager will never regress like this* irrespective of anything

    ReplyDelete
  51. I see where your coming from, I just don't think it was a fluke, we all see things differently though and that's the fun of a forum.
Fair enough you have your 'irrespective' view but can I ask, genuinely, - I think if we had managed to have signed Sanchez, we would of carried on the good football; not saying we would of won the league but IMO we would *definitely* have finished top four - then I think we are all very pleased with BR and wish to keep him. - Do you not think that would have happened?

    ReplyDelete
  52. That article is outdated as it was published on the 1st May. All the article actually states is that Charlton may sell him and that Liverpool may be interested, along with other PL clubs.

Numerous different sources have reported the fee as 3.5 million: his alleged release clause and these articles aren't outdated.

  55. Didn't specifically mate, It won't come as a huge surprise to you, that many a game is just an alcoholic haze for me (it's not cool kids, *it really isn't*) but if I've just reacquainted myself -
Didn't Balo do that every week last season! - wow how much could we do with some of that, and putting aside our differences re BR - when we're on song you can really see us producing that kind of build up play and the final ball form Silva is very Coutinho-esque.
Struggling a bit for a 2014/15 example admittedly, but how about the Studge goal vs. West Ham at Anfield, by no means Cout's finest work but not too shabby either.

    ReplyDelete

    ReplyDelete

    ReplyDelete
  60. Negredo was on loan at Valencia last year and had a very poor season. In fact he played well for City until about Xmas the season before and then could barely score to save his life. Definitely not what we need and wouldn't suit us in the slightest.

    ReplyDelete
  61. Lost track once he went on loan but thought he had a great run that season at City then maybe he got a back or shoulder injury? and that, mixed with the frustration of Pellegrini not rewarding his earlier efforts led to a drop in goals, that's only how I remember it so likely wrong but thanks for the heads up.

    ReplyDelete
  62. That's quite accurate mate

    ReplyDelete
  63. No its not. It's no better than the s*n or mirror. Well, marginally better but, fall way below the guardian, independent and times :)

    ReplyDelete
  64. Really? Check the stats for reliability. They're just in the top ten. Hovering over The mirror and Metro :)

    ReplyDelete
  65. Fergie did and was almost fired as a result.

    ReplyDelete
  66. I think what most fans found frustrating last season was that it was clear to everyone on the planet but, Liverpool FC that Sturridge was never going to last a full season leading the line and as such needed reliable back up. Balotelli just smacked of a panic buy.

    ReplyDelete
  67. That's actually statistically in factual.

    ReplyDelete
  68. The article you refer to is outdated and was published on the 1st of May. All that the article actually states is that Charlton are open to selling Gomez and that LFC are one of the interested parties. So the information obviously isn't accurate when it was published over a month ago.

    ReplyDelete
  70. So what is the story with Illori.. will he ever be given a go by BR..?

    ReplyDelete
  71. Any others in 3 years under BR?

    ReplyDelete
  72. A young Sebastian Coates was meant to be the new Alan Hansen when we signed him for £7 million. He's been loaned out, messed about and now he looks like signing for Sunderland for around £4 million. If any position on the pitch needs years of experience it has to be in defence, whats is the point of signing very young defenders, isn't that what the academy is meant to do? How disheartening for any of the young lads who play for the academy in defence to see the management saying none of you are good enough or even have enough potential to break into the first team so we need to sign others instead. What does the future for LFC hold under the ownership of FSG, it just doesn't make any sense.

    ReplyDelete
  73. The marquee players from Europe who have played in the Champions league are priced the same that BR would pay for Benteke or some other English players with no Champions league experience. FSG are only there to ruin the club by going for freebies.

    ReplyDelete
  74. Buy and loan him back, simple as.

    ReplyDelete
  75. He is actually a good player and has bags of potential. Us signing him now may have nothing to do with our squad for this season. It might just be a case of get in early and get it done- wouldn't be surprised to see him go on loan for this season. I guess people are not happy (inc me) because we havent bought players to improve the first team as we would like to see but i hope that is to come

    ReplyDelete
  76. Oh he will be great one day mate. He will be great. Like Luis Alberto.

    ReplyDelete
  77. Sterling wasn't bought by Rodgers, Ibe has played a couple of first team games so far. Coutinho. That is the one signing of raw talent that has worked out. The fact that he was already at Inter and playing (albeit bit part) hardly makes him a great find though. He had already been found.

    ReplyDelete
  78. You've just lost all credibility to me! You didn't post my reply as it clearly backed up my argument and contradicted you.

    ReplyDelete
  79. I agree that we have not signed all that we need but you talk about Champions League and Milner has played in it for years now. He is also a million miles ahead of Henderson. I am gutted to say the least that he will be our captain. Bang average player at best.

  81. I feel Liverpool need to be wrapping up there signings early and parting with the players they don't want/need aswell.
The players they have already got have been mediocre in terms of world beaters but it is a step in the right direction. If we are to sell sterling then I would like to see us get either jovetic/Dzeko in the deal also and then get konoplyanka on a freebie to cover the loss of sterling. With the money we make from the sales I would love us to sign Clyne, illaramendi, kovacic and another striker of quality if balo were to leave, someone like iCardi or bacca, these would be some real signings and would Definately help in terms of reaching top four. These targets are realistic and wouldn't really cost us a real fortune. Hopefully they can pull there fingers out and sign some players that can make a difference to our squad.

My dream/realistic Liverpool team for next season
    Gk- mignolet/bogdan
    Rb- Clyne/manquillo
    Lb- Moreno/Flanagan
    Cb- skrtel/Lovren/sakho/toure
    Cdm- can/illaramendi
    Cm- Milner/Henderson
    Lm- markovic/ojo
    Rm- konoplyanka/Ibe
    Cam- coutinho/kovacic
    St- Sturridge/Dzeko/ings/bacca

This squad is good enough to get us in and around the champs league places until Rodgers is replaced, there is decent enough cover to rest players and fight for places in the 1st team.

What are your thoughts on this jaimie

    ReplyDelete
  82. No, you are a snipe moaning about irrelevant things that have nothing to do with football. You're one of those posters who is desperate to nitpick every tiny detail, and whose motivation is not debate, but sniping. I couldn't care less if I've 'lost all credibility' to you - I'm interested in football debate, not pointless sniping.

    ReplyDelete
  83. ings and origi didn't get a dozen goals last season, what makes you think they will this time round? Not dissing you, just curious

    ReplyDelete
  84. Buy tiago ilori for 7m loan him for two seasons without playing a single minute. Buy two CB in the process (lovren and gomez probably). Are the transfer committee even thinking. Just imagine gomez manager even doubts his ability. I don't know which club does that but that shows the quality of the player

    ReplyDelete
  85. Considering Negredo has to be bought by Valencia as part of the loan deal I can't see that happening.

    ReplyDelete
  86. "The Reds have 'tracked Gomez extensively' for over three years" tracked since he was 15....could get a prison term for that!

    ReplyDelete
  87. Agreed signing sanchez would have almost guaranteed a top 4 i think...however BR showed his extreme short comings by not being able to change his tactics or get the players to fit another system. Suarez allowed sterling and sturridge to have a free roam and more space to score and create...without Suarez Sterling looked half the player..so it was maybe not a fluke but alot based on one player having the best season of his career to that time.

    ReplyDelete
  88. Not sure it was an underperformance last year- I think we over performed the previous season .What makes you think the very ordinary players from last year will improve..Markovic looks like hed struggle in a Sunday league team and Lovern is possibly one of the worst defenders I've seen wear the red jersey. Lallana looked good in a Southampton team catching the premier league by storm...at LFC he looks ordinary at best.Ballotelli-well enough said on him. Lambert -never should have been bought. Moreno cant defend but good at running forward :-) Emre cann is the only one i can see going from strength to strength.

    ReplyDelete
  89. I don't consider balotelli, at this point, a liverpool player he is genuienly the worst player I've seen Don the jersey and aside from our goals issue I genuinely think alot of our problems stemmed from the full back positions...morenos performances had a bad knock on effect of lovren which imo exaggerated how bad he is and our right back position was ALSO a problem with skrtrl struggling with can alongside him. Lovren is strong and and passed well with better coaching he can be alot better although I really think sakho can be a monster in that defence...moreno needs ALOT of work on his tactical awareness and I don't really like how left footed he is...Id love to see us get two constant full backs to start with...when the back 4 is cemented this will free up markovic to express himself (or not) and we can finally decide on him and lallana IS a good player and will release the ball earlier when he has his confidence back injuries etc took their toll...lambert...well that's just unlucky he didn't do alot wrong but he highlighted with our striker problems...I honestly believe that if we can conced 15 less goals and score 15 more (achievable) then we'll be in good shape...We badly need to sort out our defence and It all starts with those full backs...I've liked the signings that have come in so far...clyne another left back and a striker and we can go I reckon...would love another attacking mid but maybe texeira comes in...

    ReplyDelete
  90. How is it that our young CBs never look up to Jamie Carragher? For crying out loud, don't these CB wannabes even know that Carra was the world's best hoofer of the ball?

    ReplyDelete
  91. Spoken like a true cowboy.

    ReplyDelete
  92. Of course, the players you've mentioned will bring Liverpool to another level. The question is, which level?

    ReplyDelete
  93. tO BE honest haven't got a clue, and don't give a fcuk- I just want players that will fight for my club and do well..

    ReplyDelete
  94. We're probably not too far apart StuBird - I agree BR hasn't been brilliant this season and has got a lot wrong, I just think he showed enough the season before to get a little more time - hopefully we will have a good summer and then it's going to be up to him to show us either way.

    ReplyDelete
  95. I just think that we will create a heck of a lot more chances than Burnley and once those two hit their stride they can start scoring a few, also we'll *hopefully* be in the Cups a lot longer than Burnley which will mean they get more games to get those goals.
I did also use a healthy smattering of optimism in my calculations :)

    ReplyDelete
  96. Yet another 12 year old, destined to go on loan, then given away. Will we EVER learn?

We need starters. The following are all viable, and play in positions we need: Begovic, Clyne, Javi Martinez, William Carvalho and Bacca.
