Confirmed: Liverpool hero 'told' £25m 'new Ronaldo' to sign for Liverpool. It didn't work...

I awoke this morning with the fervent hope that the Memphis Depay-Manchester United story was just a horrible nightmare, but alas, it's still a depressing reality: one of world football's most promising attackers will strut his stuff at Old Trafford next season, and Liverpool will have to make do with Lazar Markovic, and/or the substandard dross Brendan Rodgers will inevitably sign this summer. How close were the Reds to sealing the deal? According to one Dutch journalist, Liverpool were 'serious contenders', and even received a helping-hand from two of the club's ex-players.

Speaking to TalkSport on Thursday, Dutch 'football expert' Marcel Van Der Kraan claimed that:

* Up until about 48 hours before Man United sealed the deal, Liverpool and PSG were in pole-position to sign Depay.

* The youngster - nicknamed the 'new Ronaldo' - had a 'strong favour for the Premier League' and was 'flattered by the interest from Liverpool'.

He further explained:

"Bolo Zenden and Dirk Kuyt told him he would get playing time there [at Anfield] and it would be a great set-up for him to develop"

Van Der Kraan's take seems to fit with the view of Marcel Brands, PSV's Sporting Director, who told reporters today:

"Liverpool contacted us and talked with the player. They were also one of the clubs interested but at the end Memphis had the final decision and he chose Manchester United"

So, what was the deciding factor: Manchester United, or the presence of fellow Dutchman Louis Van Gaal?

Depay - who will cost £25m - pays lip service to the idea of Man United being a 'dream club', but anyone who's watched the Mancs play this season (and by 'play' I mean hoof the ball up to Fellaini and hope for the best) will concede that United are no longer a genuine force in European football.

Clearly, Van Gaal is the reason United won this particular transfer race; if he wasn't the manager, I have no doubt that Depay would've signed for another club (probably PSG).

If David Moyes was still in charge, would Depay have signed for the club? No chance (IMO)

The Depay fiasco is simply another example of why it is absolutely imperative to have a manager of international renown in the Anfield hotseat.

This is 2015, not 1986 when Alex Ferguson took over at United; things have changed since then, and in order to attract the elite of Europe, an elite manager is required, and despite his many qualities, Rodgers 'aint it.

On a related note, Rodgers claims that Liverpool were never interested in Depay, but that's another article...

  1. Completely understand your point. I'm not a fan of any of the sensational 24-hour news outlets. It's no longer journalism. They're parrots well-compensated to perpetuate a narrative that is false or intentionally misleading. I personally just do not trust any politicians - especially here in the States.

I don't want to turn this into a political forum (apologies, JK), but my problems with POTUS go far beyond the so-called ACA.

  2. klopp looks most likely - to survive B R must make top 4 - Every forward he has signed have been dire

    ReplyDelete
  3. Can you let me know the same for anyone? You cant use the word definitely with any manager, and expecting a team to perform above expectations isnt that logical, the question is is there a good reason to think he can do that? well liverpool only had the 6th most expensive team in the league last year with totenham favs to challenge arsenal for 4th, but i seemed to have missed it last year, can you tell me what happened? did we achieve 6th in the end or were goals too hard to come by?

  4. ..and down and down we go

  5. Plus he has no respect for the law, and we know how important that is to Bob Loblaw.

(yes, that is an entirely serious statement btw)

  7. Depay USED LFC to agree a price so LVG could come and snatch him just like Chelsea always do - I tell you our management are pathetic - they should do a Miliband / Clegg = RESIGN on the grounds of incompetence. They continually set themselves low targets and fail to achieve any - Balotelli was the signing of a Madman

  8. Depay is not needed.
Keeping Sterling is more important , we should show ambition and sign some good players and pay Sterling good wages.

With Sterling and Ibe , Depay has nowhere to play anyway.
Sign Benteke which is realistic signing and play:

    ................................................Benteke
    .........................Ibe...........................................Sterling
    ...................................................Coutinho
    ...........................................Can..............Henderson
    ..............................Moreno......Sakho.........Skrtel......Montoya
    .........................................................Mignolet

Here's how to put our beloved club back on top.
    1. "Montior" all the multi billionaires of this world and get one of them to buy us.
    2. "Monitor" the best managers in the world and hire one.
    3. Stop "monitoring"
    4. Manager tells owners who he wants in the team.
    5. Owners buy the players.
Do this and we may have a chance to compete with the big boys.

  10. I don't want to turn this into a serious political discussion as this is not the forum for it.

  12. If Madrid don't win anything this season Ancelotti will surely get sacked, he would be my choice to come here.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Or perhaps we're throwing false stories out there so Southampton, West Ham, and Spurs follow them.

    ReplyDelete
  14. I hear he's quite scrappy.

I'm starting to get the opinion you hold Brendan to the same high esteem you do when allowing advertisers place the "dross" on your site....

    ReplyDelete
  18. For some reasons. .I don't think Ancelotti will be a success at Liverpool. He is kind of a luxury manager. We need someone who can give consistent results out of our average squad.

  19. Of course the Law is important to Bob otherwise he'd be Bob Lob

  20. Depay is not the end of the world

    that

Paul George Ntep has some credible stats

    9 goals 7 assist

in a way stronger league then the dutch league and is one year older

he can fill that void no problem

Son is also a huge prospect

    ReplyDelete
  21. That may very well be Logan's new name next season

I've read he will be seeing out the final year of his contract....

    ReplyDelete
  23. BR said that we have enough players in that position. So that should also rule out gorgeous Ntep

    ReplyDelete
  24. Vietto,Son,Kovacic,

    are our standards

    Lacazette ,Depay ,Anderson etc

    are too good for us

    ReplyDelete
  25. I wouldn't want Ancelotti - he's a short-term, who doesn't build anything. He goes in, spends shedloads of money, wins some trophies, and then leaves for another club. Winning trophies is good, but the manager also needs to continue building a modern legacy at LFC.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Ntep

    is a forward ( not just a winger )

so like Suarez he can inter change between striker and winger

  30. Stan Dinaround6:10 pm, May 08, 2015

Doubt it.... I think FSG will look back on this season and wonder just what we would have been like had we had a couple of reliable goalscoring strikers in the team, and then give Brendan a shedload of cash and tell him to go crazy........ Woah! I feel dizzy....

    ReplyDelete
  31. I feel it would be prudent to monitor the monitors monitoring the multi-billionaires, then get rid of the monitors of the monitors, but retain the monitored monitors so that they can monitor potential signings.

    ReplyDelete
  32. A world renowned manager who can attract big players and win trophies, I'd take that right now even if it is only for a year or two.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Please God, not again! lol

    ReplyDelete
  34. I agree, we ought to keep Sterling.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Who thinks Markovic will make the grade next season and why?

    ReplyDelete
  36. Why would he?

Man united , the third richest club in the world,
13 pl titles recently , 5 times as more valuable then lfc supposadley

    Arsenal
    Emirates stadium , unbelievable revenue
massive success , invincible will live long in players heads ,

    Chelsea and Manchester city
The two fastest growing clubs in the world that can pay 5 times the wages we can , have had lost of success recently
    are richer then us

Give me one reason why Rogers should finish above:
    1) Richer clubs
    2) Higher wage bills
    3) Bigger reputations in the modern era and to players ( most players are younger then when we last won the league)
    4) Have had way more sucsess in modern era

It is unreasonable to expect 4th , we should just hope for 4th
we cant get rid of Rodgers because at the end of the day the owners will still be there and they will still pay low wages and sell our best players

    ReplyDelete
  37. Vahe Basmadjian6:14 pm, May 08, 2015

I love the way you monitor things Bob :-)

    ReplyDelete
  38. Don't worry I added Origi and missed Markovic

    ReplyDelete
  39. Arsenal,Chelsea,Man united and Man city

are bigger then us in the modern era
so how can Rodgers finish above 4 bigger clubs

    ReplyDelete
  40. Alas a poor Patrick Berger imitation..

    ReplyDelete
  41. My hat in the ring :) Can't see it happening, not seen him ghost past players or make a killer pass yet, nearly always a pass to the man behind or to the side.. Not what we played 20mil for

    ReplyDelete
  42. It's both a blessing and a curse, Vahe.

    ReplyDelete
  43. No pace to take on defender, poor finisher/crossing.

Just another one who can pass the ball from side to side.. and who is weak in tracking back and challenging player on the ball.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Stan Dinaround6:18 pm, May 08, 2015

I knew last season was some kind of acid trip.....Finishing above Chelsea, Arsenal and Man United.... Nah! they are the bigger teams, never happened...

    ReplyDelete
  45. If someone offers us 50M we should definitely sell him. The more I see him I realize that he is one dimensional, and does not show up in big games.

By the way, I don't by the "He is just a kid argument". Because if he wants a developed player money, then he will be judged as one.

    ReplyDelete
  46. So who'd be your first choice?

    Klopp or Rafa?

    ReplyDelete
  47. Exactly that is credit to Rodgers
    he went agints the system
but as we all know there is only so long we can do that and this season proved it

    ReplyDelete
  48. Stan Dinaround6:20 pm, May 08, 2015

He was awesome at Benfica, did all the things you claim he can't do... Maybe playing him as an out and out winger would be beneficial... At the moment, as a wingback, he has to be defensively responsible, and I think that defensive duty is holding him back from expressing himself.... There are glimmers of the man we bought.... We just need to harness it.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Not comparing him to Cristiano Ronaldo

But Roanldo struggles with portugal playing with some of their players
    especially against big teams
where was he portugal vs germany

it is a team game and he needs others similar quality to him

    only Coutinho,Sakho and Can are
maybe Ibe but he only just started

    ReplyDelete
  50. I don't think Its not only the defensive side of the game. I think he is really struggling with the pace of the game and also the physicality of the league.

    ReplyDelete
  51. Two points:

    1. Pressure of playing at bigger club with bigger expectation

    2. BR not playing his consistently enough in a position he can make his own.

Back to the point that BR wants every player to be able to play in 3 different positions, irrespective of how badly they play in each of those 3 positions ;-)

    ReplyDelete
  52. Think he might be lacking in confidence, not able to cope with the pressure then?

    ReplyDelete
  53. What capacity?
Nothing that involves making decisions, hopefully.

    ReplyDelete
  54. So does Messi in the Argentina team.
But you can clearly see their leadership qualities every time. Both try to carry the Portuguese and the Argentina team on their back. Also Both players have shown enough quality during the season. Sterling did not show any courage, and sometimes even skills and quality.

    ReplyDelete
  55. If the choice is between those two, I'd take Benitez. He knows the club; already has an affinity with the fanbase, and after 5 years away from Anfield, I'm sure he's had time to reflect on the mistakes he made during his first tenure.

I genuinely believe that after his experiences at Inter, Chelsea, Napoli etc, he'd be a better *Liverpool* manager the second time around, and this is coming from someone who was a vociferous critic of the man during his first spell (as regular readers will attest).

In my view, fans are judging Benitez through the lens of the past, and that's pointless. He's a different manager now, and working under a FSG, he has the managerial experience and talent to achieve even more success at Anfield.

Importantly, Benitez has the track record and the pull to attract top-class players. He has an aura about him that Rodgers lacks, and he's still young enough to build a dynasty at Liverpool.

The same applies to Klopp, of course, but for me, Benitez's affinity with the club gives him the edge.

    ReplyDelete
  56. I agree the deficiencies seem to be all about technique. He has a good level of athleticism but poor technique. This can improve but by how much? I hope he adds goals next season but I can't see it happening. Just like you've said, we've not seen a glimpse of talent to get you off your seat. We got ripped off again, we will never recoup £20mill.

    Ming,
    Montoya, Skrtel, Sakho, Moreno
    Hendo, Geis Coutinho
    Ibe, ???????, Steling

Subs, Can, Markovic, Lallana, Sturridge, Lucas, Lovren, Flannagan,

Apart from no real clue to who we could be targeting at CF or what Brendan deams to be the style of Striker needed, I'm electing to reserve the right to pick later....

But I'm liking the look of that subs bench..... I'd mix with it the likes of Kent, Wilson Rossiter and Ojo....And I think were grand...

With so many names flying around for Striker, I really don't know who I want, without naming the totally unreasonable.... Paco Alcacer, Aleksander Mitrovic, Luciano Vietto, Rodrigo and Carlos Bacca.... Hell, I'd even call up Carlos Tevez if we could get some goals out of him.....

    ReplyDelete
  58. Yes Jamie, please write that article.

    ReplyDelete
  59. I would also go with Benitez mostly because he has the courage to speak against the owners if needed. Be it in player selection, or some other policy that does not make sense. Something that BR did not do.

    ReplyDelete
  60. I have not seen anything special from him but everything can change next season. Markovic has time on his side and it is obvious he needed to settle. My only problem was that we spent so much money on a player that obviously needs time to come good.

    ReplyDelete
  61. I agree, we had our chance and blew it against Hull and West Brom. The worst thing about those games were the way we blew champions league with barely a whimper.
The only good news is that Carrick will miss their last 3 games. They've been very poor without him this season

    ReplyDelete
  62. Don't start talking about him in the past tense just yet.

    ReplyDelete
  63. Do you think second season will bring the confidence to do the things you've mentioned? Personally, I doubt it?

    ReplyDelete
  64. Who is to be blamed for that? Please dont tell me the transfer committee. BR should have just said NO (too much money) and insisted on it.

    ReplyDelete
  65. Stan Dinaround6:36 pm, May 08, 2015

Versatility is something you expect from a club that doesn't have the resources of LFC, Also, versatility can be a curse, just ask Can or James Milner....

    ReplyDelete
  66. It is a collective Liverpool effort that should be blamed. Obviously, we do not know the inner workings of the deal but the problem is that the club is not a good spot of talent and goes on media or other clubs's interest.

    ReplyDelete
  67. And we shall drink to forget...

    ReplyDelete
  68. Stan Dinaround6:38 pm, May 08, 2015

Anything can change, Aaron Ramsey is a perfect example of a player no one really noticed, then boom, he exploded onto the scene last season.... I'd be happy to give him time, after all, he's only a kid....

    ReplyDelete
  69. For those who are still clinging on to the hope that LFC may sneak 4th place and thus save BR's tenure, please allow me to remind folks of some of the discussions that took place during the summer.

Post the sale of the Suarez, and having spent £120m, I asked the question what should be the MINIMUM target for LFC in 14-15 and how should we define success for BR this season. The majority of fans said:

    1. top 4 finish but

    2. quite a few said having spent £120m and Man U in turmoil a top 3 finish and still be challenging for the EPL in April.

I note now some are suggesting that actually finishing 5 is LFC's current level and we should NOT now or for the FORESEEABLE future expect to finish any higher.

My own view is closer to 2 above in that having finished 2nd last year, and massively overachieving due to SAS, we had an opportunity this year to keep Man U in the doldrums for a while - which we miserably failed to do so.

    ReplyDelete
  70. That is one of the reasons rwhy he will not get the job

    ReplyDelete
  71. I agree about the collective effort, but I honestly think a football novice would have told you a 20M on a 20 year from the Portuguese league is considered a large sum of money. They should have done their due diligence and I think its the responsibility of the manager to say something along "Based on my experience, he will probably need 2 seasons to adjust, I need someone good now"

    ReplyDelete
  72. And to be honest, those aren't BAD standards. What IS bad is we choose to throw those types of players away and sign english mid table players instead.

    ReplyDelete
  73. Rodgers? Is that a new way to spell Suarez?

    ReplyDelete
  74. The fact that we're debating this, shows how out of touch & misguided the TC/BR we're when they sanctioned the Markovic signing. We were craving the experienced player with proven quality to slot in straight away. To continue last season's momentum. We bought the wrong player. In all honesty, he deserves next season to bed in. That is to play in his natural position , and game time (cup games/benched for league games). I think the disappointment has made a lot of fans inpatient, including myself.

    ReplyDelete
  75. I think he will. He is very quick, dribbles are really nice, except he is too nervous in-front of the net. With a bit of patience and a leader we can see the best from him.

    ReplyDelete
  76. It ain't fiasco. I doubt other managers had a shot at him with LVG and best wages in the EPL. Unfortunately there probably will be a fiasco or two this summer, but this simply wasn't.

    ReplyDelete
  77. quick - faster than Lucas?

    ReplyDelete
  78. Well I hope by now FSG learned that they know nothing about football, and they need someone who would has the ability to say NO

    ReplyDelete
  79. Stan Dinaround6:45 pm, May 08, 2015

All those were made with the knowledge that we would have the best English striker on hand to score goals......We haven't, and we can't win anything if we don't do the basic required element of any football game.... Score goals.

    ReplyDelete
  80. it couldn't as I don't know much about your politics, but good call..

    ReplyDelete
  81. I've said the same thing? Wrong player, wrong time!

    ReplyDelete
  82. So what's worse - having a fiasco now, or knowing one is coming and doing nothing to avoid it?

    ReplyDelete
  83. Stan Dinaround6:46 pm, May 08, 2015

    Faster than Sterling quick.

    ReplyDelete
  84. Firstly it didn't happen and secondly who is to say we are doing nothing to avoid it?

    ReplyDelete
  85. Yes, but I am saying that BR should have said that to the TC and stopped us from buying him.

    ReplyDelete
  86. Lets be fair

Rodgers so called midtable English signings:

    Joe Allen 15m
    Mignolet 9m
    Lallana 25m
    Lambert 4m
    Lovren 20m

Okay that cost some money but :

    Sturridge,Coutinho,Markovic,Sakho,Can,
    Moreno, Balotelli, Origi, Sahin,Moses
    Toure,

    were not from midtable

    ReplyDelete
  87. Stan, yep I hear you.. BUT..

The whole point of having more than one striker is to have cover in case of injuries. And Mario et al backups were BR choices.

It like saying my car has an air bag which should inflate in case of an accident, but hey I know the air bag will never deploy cos its broke.

    ReplyDelete
  88. Here.
Because BR must get back to one of the 'normal' formations(he mentioned Lazar while speaking about wingers), and the kid has loads of talent. Just compare him to Sterling. Poor finishing but loads of pace and dribbles. Not even dribbles were really working this year but.. A boring, but true argument- he is a kid.

    ReplyDelete
  89. Even in Portugal he was average, absolutely nothing special.

    ReplyDelete
  90. Have to disagree, having watched more than a dozen of his games last season.

    ReplyDelete
  91. Mate trust me I watch the Liga Sagres regularly and Markovic done average and nothing else. Because of his age the the media went crazy, if he was 28 he would not be hyped about.

    ReplyDelete
  92. POTUS? Presidents? Fair enough on not trusting. There are just some I trust less than others.

    ReplyDelete
  93. I'll put my hand up and say I do not know how fast Markovic/Sterling are across 40/60 and 100m..

But on seeing both play, I've seen Sterling "skin" quite a few defenders and nerve seen Markovic "skin" one defender.

    ReplyDelete
  94. If FSG hold some kind of grudge from 5 years ago, then they seriously need to get over it.

They didn't even work with the man, so they have no real frame of reference.

Benitez made mistakes, but he also won trophies, and maintained Liverpool's Champions League status, and he did this with less money (per year) than Rodgers.

Looking at the respective records of both managers, even FSG - with their limited knowledge of football - should see that Benitez is a top class manager.

If they can't, and their judgement is clouded by pointless grudges, then that in and of itself is bad for Liverpool.

    ReplyDelete
  95. Glad you base your opinion on actualy watching him, but I disagree.

    ReplyDelete
  96. Cool. What do you think he excels at? Some little touches and some dribbling is all see to be honest. You?

  97. One word: hair.

  99. Hmnn not convinced...

I don't think Balotelli was broke, or Lambo for that matter.... Just treated like they were... That, is all on Brendan and his poor mismanagement of those two players... As a supporter of Brendan for the most part, I can admit to knowing of his flaws, and his treatment of Balotelli and Lambo being one of em.....That and his bizarre substitutions, or lack of....Questionable need to revert back to a losing strategy when we had a winning one..... I hope me faith in him isn't misplaced, I hope he has enough humility to take all the abuse on the chin, and learn from his mistakes without letting his ego take over...I have hope.

I'll get my 5 year old to write a letter to the club asking them to find out...

    ReplyDelete
  106. Your argument is sound - just dont see FSG wanting to deal with the baggage that Rafa brings with him.

    ReplyDelete
  107. It doesn't matter if we finish 4th or 5th, the only way to go forward is to get a real manager with wining mentality & history, he will be able to attract players & help us move forward, unfortunately rodgers is not that guy & he will never be

    ReplyDelete
  108. Great - we'll get another 200+ page dossier my little ones can colour in ;-)

    ReplyDelete
  120. He's obviously got talent but we're not seeing anything dazzling from him atm, just runs into blind alleys or gets himself in a tangle

    ReplyDelete
  121. A few points:

    1. Last year he was "less" in the spot light as SAS were banging in goals for fun

    2. BR has placed too high a burden on him without the support of a goal-scoring striker

    3. He thinks rather than has proved he is worth £100k+ a week. Hence mentally not right

  122. Any predictions for the Chelsea game?

Best I am expecting is a bore draw..

  123. All good points :) Not someone to build a team around

  124. Great approach play - cannot be relied upon to finish.

May be a development/age thing - but then that's on BR for chucking him in deep end.

If player demands £100k+ salary, then club + fans are likely to demand a £100k+ performance/outcome more often than not.

  125. Finish with more points, we finished above 3 of them last season, or is that not modern enough?

  126. Skinned alive lol We're very fragile now, an early goal for Chelsea and it will be another depressing match to watch.. Though I would like to see us take the game to them, maybe round the season off with some good attacking fotball, not the gonads we've been forced to watch this year :(

    ReplyDelete
  127. Would be depressing if he went to another team and became a star player, would bring BR's man-management skills into question?

  128. Orme.....

we must be patient with the kids....

...all children dribble....loads as you quite rightly say....

  131. Skinned alive lol We'll probably run onto the pitch waving white flags :P

  132. Yep something along the lines of mayweather paquauio......

    ...mannypunch-mayweatherslip, mannypunch-mayweatherslip, mannypunch,punch-mayweatherslip,slip.....mayweather craaaaack....manny out....

    ReplyDelete
  133. ...and yes....we are the metaphorical Manny Paquaio....!

    ReplyDelete
  134. The answer to the last question is no.

    ReplyDelete
  135. Actually, I've got to say Jaimie you've pretty much held it together quite a long time....

...I mean I been reading this site a long time and you pride yourself on critical realism which mostly translates as 'I'm not givin' noone the benefit of my exalted doubt!'

...so to see you get behind Brendan Rodgers so willingly and faithfully was to me great reading, but also a great surprise to see you so forgiving....

However, this Depay thing has riled you properly and there hasn't been so much a gentle transition into grumbled dissatisfaction but more a total landslide....

You've turned bro, and it's happened quickly...to see you say 'It ain't Brendan Rodgers' who can take our team anywhere near capable of attracting the elite of Europe.......

...It was only a matter of time I suppose.....nice to see you back.....

  136. Liverpool's problems are gigantic, immense, vast. The team is nowhere near good enough and the manager hasn't a clue. Tweaks won't accomplish a damn thing.

    ReplyDelete
  137. Neto is poor...he is worse than Mignolet you especially now that Migs is playing well.

    ReplyDelete
  138. So who's Manny in your mind - LFC or Chelsea?

    ReplyDelete
  139. Slumdog Mignolet8:34 pm, May 08, 2015

Fair enough but knowing fsg they won't pass up a free keeper...

  140. Welsh friend of Penny

  141. Yes please! get rid of Obama asap and ship him to Manu U so they never get anything done again, except to force everyone into the same socialist mediocrity box...just like our summer transfers last year (except Emre)

    ReplyDelete
  142. Agree with you until the Markovic, balo, Lallana part; They are a spark-free zone I'm afraid.............Adding 1-2 real big boy players to lead by example with proven skill and unquestioned work rate: then you have something.......

    ReplyDelete
  143. Which is why tweaks will be made next year and the following year...

Our manager might be clueless, but he's not the only one...sheesh.

    ReplyDelete
  144. To be honest Lallana hasn't been all bad this season apart from some areas, but he clearly cares about this club (Played with the rib issue) and Markovic I feel was doing great until the red card he received in the game vs Basel

    ReplyDelete
  145. Oh, and Stevie won't be coming back to manage the club.

No, it'll be one of those cushy ambassadorial roles, a la previous legends. They'll trot him out during tv appearances, maybe some pundit work, but mostly he'll take over from where Kenny et al left off.

  146. Absolutely right. Our health minister in SA is fighting an uphill battle trying to implement something similar here, and much of the opposition relies on b adly manipulated stats and the idea that the poor are somehow less deserving of good health than those born into privilege.
