Yes Please: 'Outstanding' attacker who's 'like' £30m star wants to 'go back to LFC'

By all accounts, Joao Teixeira's season-loan spell at Sami Hyypia's Brighton is going very well, but the youngster is clearly desperate for a return to Anfield . The question is, if/when Teixeira returns, will Brendan Rodgers give him the chance to make an impact at the club?

With 5 goals/assists in 15 appearances, 'outstanding' Teixeira is having a creditable impact at Brighton, but the Portuguese youngster has his eye on breaking into the Liverpool first team. This week, he told LFC.com:

"I want to go back to Liverpool. [Hyypia] always tells me the way to work and how I can do it. He gives me advice to keep going. He is a legend at Liverpool and a really nice guy as well, as a person and a manager."

Teixeira also clearly understands his main role in the team:

"It has been a great move for me, making some assists and scoring goals. It's about numbers - football is about statistics. I've been improving my numbers and hopefully I'll score more and give more assists".

Exactly. Some visitors claim that I rely to heavily on statistics, but as I always argue:

* An attacking player's primary role is to score and create goals, and, clearly, this has been impressed upon Teixeira by Hyypia, and almost certainly by Brendan Rodgers, who has on many occasions underlined the importance of goals/assists.

* Running, tackling, tracking back etc are important, but goals/assists supersede those things when it comes to primary importance.

* Goals win games. It's that simple; and if a striker/attacking player regularly scores/creates goals, then I personally couldn't care less if he fails to run 10 miles a game and/or doesn't track back/tackle as much as other players.

For example, take LFC this season: who cares if Balotelli, Borini, and Lambert run 10 miles a game, and make countless tackles? They have abjectly failed to do their main job, which is to score/create goals, and consequently, Liverpool's season is in the toilet.

As for Teixeira: Hyypia is also impressed with his performances, but despite describing him as a 'good player', the Finn highlighted one specific area for improvement. He told reporters:

"He is young and sometimes with youngsters, the performances are not consistent. He will need to work on consistency and the will to improve himself every day. I'll be on top of him."

Reds legend Ian St. John is a fan of Teixeira, and after his debut against Fulham last season, he praised the youngster's 'great movement', and further enthused:

"We’ve just witnessed the emergence of a really good kid. I remember watching Wayne Rooney’s debut, and Texeira is like him, and reminds me of that. He didn’t look phased, and got stuck in as well which is where some young players can be found out. He looks like he’s got real quality"

Teixeira had a decent debut. He looked composed on the ball, and made (mostly) good decisions with his passing, but there's no point getting carried away. Over the last few years, several similar players have tried and failed to establish themselves in LFC's first team. Dani Pacheco is one example. There's also Luis Alberto and, of course, Suso, who continues to be ignored by Rodgers.

Is Teixeira any better than Suso? I've seen both play countless times for LFC's youth teams, but in terms of quality and potential, I don't see much difference. Obviously, I hope the Portuguese is given a chance and becomes an integral part of the team, but I fully expect him to go the same way as the Suso, i.e. endlessly warming the bench, or totally ignored.

St. John's Rooney comparison is somewhat flattering, but let's just hope that football ability is the only thing Teixeira has in common with Man United's £30m-rated thug.

  2. Sterling?

  3. Instead of signing Lallana we could have actually given Suso or Teixeira a proper chance at first team football. Teixeira seems a much better prospect than Suso IMO.

We signed too many players this season that were not needed. Could have kept Agger instead of signing Lovren. Lallana was our most expensive signing and is not making the team on a regular basis. Could have gone all in for a player like Lacazette who would have been a far better fit than Balotelli.

What is done is done. We need to start seeing results.

  4. Agreed on a lot of things! But I like Suso, might be his name that edges it over teixeira..

    true but i want more
ibe should be given priority over markovic
    suso over lallana

that could have saved us 45m plus 20m balo and lambert
    to sign two top strikers

we need to spend more wisely

  6. The one thing that does not work in Suso's favour is that he is not the quickest.

  10. Football is a game of opinions for spectators ay! I think Markovic will come good, emre can too! Just gotta give the players and especially the manager time!
Should have bought more wisely but we didn't. According to the fans anyway!
Would like to see a top top player join but can't see liverpool appealing to anyone in today's game! It's all about money and capital destination.
    We'll come good in time!

  11. I can see that consistence is needed as Sammi says. After all The likes of Balotelli, Borini and Lambert are outstandingly consistent - They consistently fail to score goals it would seem.

  12. Ha ha. Pity that he has not had many opportunities Lallana at £25m or Teixeira doing absolutely everything he can to gain 1st team action while our most expensive signing is not even a regular.

I really do not see FSG making anymore money available this season and rightfully so.

  13. At this point, I'd rather fail with playing our players brought up through our academy than fail with playing hired guns.

  14. Bellamy did not have much good to say about Rafa in is autobiography :-)

  15. Your Rev. 2 of the article made all the difference. It changes it completely. It takes a bigger man to admit they may have made a mistake. By editing the article you've done that. I respect the fact you did it.

  16. I getting so tired of people saying we should or could of kept Agger.

The has admitted that he can no longer physically play at the top level any more.. we already have sturridge always injured, why keep another player who is the same

  17. Soccer am do a skills bit that Sterling took part in. That's a whole lot different to knowing he's a good player. They can train dolphins to juggle a football but that doesn't make me think they'll make it as a footballer.

    ReplyDelete
  18. It doesn't change it completely. To most people, it's glaringly obvious that it's merely my opinion that Markovic's value has reached a financial ceiling. As usual, though, I'm forced to insult the intelligence of visitors my blatantly spelling it out by using qualifiers like 'IMO', 'In my view', or 'Arguably'.

  19. My veiws are very realistic, and just because you are in denial its o.k. they have programs for that sort of thing. If you had an ouce of comprehension the current team is below average with poor signings; crap. With that said, Bodgers should have made a contingency plan for the always broken Sturridge, but he didn't. There lies problem #1. Problem #2, he has crap like Lambert Borini and a lazy Balotelli. Did you forget Suarez suspension last season? He came back and took the scoring title by storm surpassing whatever Daniel would ever dream of. Sturridge rode on Suarez coattails. If it weren't for El Pistolero Daniel would still be average. Keep your dulusions of grandure and seek help. In the meantime Sturridge will be following in the footsteps of Owen and Hargreaves. How immature of me....

  21. i honestly think there is a fault with Liverpool at the very core of the club over its valuation of players, its almost institutionalized incompetence ,is there no one on the backroom staff who stops and says hang on guys we are paying 20m for a 10m player lets have a re think.

    ReplyDelete
  22. im not sure if craigs opinion of anyone really counts, remember this is a guy who attacked his team mate with a golf club its hardly top tier validation

    ReplyDelete
  23. Other than Torres and Reina I don't remember too many players having much good to say about Rafa. Maybe add Lucas to that list

    ReplyDelete
  24. Exactly. Southampton for Gareth Bale etc

manager are not there to make friends
rafa did not carry favoritism like rodgers
rodgers clearly has a lot of affection for gerrard and allen and this has clouded his judgement

  27. Yes his leaving present along with Ralfonso Burrell and his team . Defected to city now since BR came in.

  28. Lallana total waste of money along with the majority of the other 8 or 9 brought in.

  29. I agree, that season under Rafa was probably our best in an overall sense. Solid defence, excellent controlled football, tactically almost flawless. The only issue was the occasional lack of goals in key matches but sometimes that's just bad luck. But you know what? I enjoyed last season more. I thought the football was more exciting and just overall better to watch. Even though we did so well that year under Rafa people still bemoaned his conservative approach, his persistence with players like Kuyt and the teams failure to get more than a point from matches against smaller teams. There are always criticisms from some sections.

  30. Sakho will come good once fit they should not have paid 20 mill for Lovren though.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Yoe are not taking into account his assists (and incidentally his 31 goals + 21 assists last season do not include the number of penalties he won either..which admittedly were less than he should have)

    ReplyDelete
  32. Problem is that Rodgers does not fancy Sakho.

    ReplyDelete
  33. There have been many other LFC players who have not had much good to say about Rafa.

    ReplyDelete
  34. You can do as much without the ball as you can with it. so although statistics can be helpful, they by no means tell the whole story, and I know you know that...

    ReplyDelete
  35. I want more! classic modern fan

    ReplyDelete
  36. Really? You supported the club through Hand G and nearly going into administration, yet this is your low point?
    Incredible.
BTW, 8 years is not as long as you imagine in the area of club support compared to many fans. Your ability to put things in context compared to many will be compromised. Your opinion is just as valid as anyone else's, but it will be difficult for you to put some issues into proper context..

    ReplyDelete
  37. Rafa definitely had favourites are you kidding me?

    ReplyDelete
  38. Kennedy, Heighway, Rush, Beardsley, Ooopps now I'm showing my age...

    ReplyDelete
  39. :) I wonder what Torres would say about Rafa's insistance on playing him with a dodgy knee, an injury he was never fully recovered from... Hence poor showing in final days at LFC and later at Chavski. They knew about it at LFC, so much so, they were suprised he didn't get sent back from Chelsea... If only they hadn't rushed through their medical, he may never have ever played for Chelsea.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Having watched him a few times for Brighton this season, the lad clearly has talent but he does tend to disappear from games after a bright start.

Still plenty to work on before BR can start relying on him!

    ReplyDelete
  41. of course he won't get a shot

    ReplyDelete
  42. I agree with Logan. We should have given Texeira a shot and maybe Ibe as well. Lallana, Balotelli, Markovic and lambert have been total wastes of funds. Our kids plus two big boy, grown up proven stars would have yielded better results than Tottenham version 2.0. So far, my best advice is fire our front office and hire Southampton's! They seem to know how to find and develop good players and squads(maybe managers) better than us. Suarez compensated for a lot of deficiencies last year. Now the tide is out and are shown to be wading without a bathing suit........

    ReplyDelete
  43. BR will never turn this situation around. The guys don't like him, thats why they play like that. He has no clues as to what to do

  44. Gerrard job done you told us !
