Amid intense speculation about the future of Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers, ex-manager Rafa Benitez has (seemingly) dismissed ongoing rumours of an imminent return to Anfield.
When asked on Saturday about the Liverpool job, Benitez told reporters:
“If I go to Liverpool, everyone says I’m going back there, even if it’s just to visit my family.
"The fans respect me here [at Napoli] and I am happy, there is a team that can grow and I am concentrated on that"
I wouldn't read too much into this; after all, what else is Benitez going to say? He's hardly going to make a public play for the job when Rodgers is under such intense pressure. He's merely being diplomatic, but privately, he almost certainly wants the job.
That said, Benitez doesn't specifically rule anything out - he merely outlines how others perceive his trips to Liverpool. Additionally, the Spaniard has stated several times in the past that he wants another cha nce at Anfield. Last season, for example, he emphatically told reporters:
"I know I will return to Liverpool as coach one day, almost certainly. What I don’t know is when but my wife and children still live there, so I will be back".
According to UK Bookmakers, there are currently five leading candidates to replace Rodgers:
* Rafa Benitez
* Jurgen Klopp
* Laurent Blanc
* Martin O'Neill
* Roberto Martinez
Earlier this week, I conducted a poll on the site asking which of the above managers is the best choice to replace Rodgers:
* 16730 visitors (approx) participated in the poll (which is still ongoing)
* 50% chose Benitez; 45% chose Klopp.
Clearly, Benitez still retains an incredible level of support amongst Liverpool fans, and whilst the speculation over Rodgers job continues, the Spaniard will almost certainly remain the fans' number one choice to take over.

I'm not a genius, carra is saying exactly what all us fans are thinking. End of. He's right about it and I agree with you about effort. Effort desire passion and commitment is the bare minimum we expect when they pull on that shirt. Let's hope something improves ASAP! I feel if we don't qualify from our champions league group Brendan is looking at p45
ReplyDeleteBR's Twitter- #wishIcouldscapegoatBalloteli
ReplyDeleteFSG should try their best to sign Diego Simeone - the man to topple the giants of R.Madrid and Barcelona.
ReplyDeleteShow him the money, give him control over the transfers and show him some desire, and he'll come.
He is a great tactician and a ruthless manager who never fails to punish any leniency from the squad. This guy builds a team from defense- to midfield - to offence.
He will certainly transform the current squad to one of a warriors'. He can attract quality talent from Athleti and Spain, as he certainly possess that star pulling power. He can indeed give a tough time to likes of Mourinho.
Anfield needs this guy!!!!!
Again I wouldn't mind bringing in Klopp( in case FSG fails in pursuit of Simeone) because of his strong credentials. He is quite similar to Simeone when it comes to footballing philosophy. He has proven his mettle against the Bavarian giants. Plus he can certainly bring the talented crop of footballers like Reus,Hummels, Gundogan etc.from Dortmund.
Sack BR(which is now very obvious)
And bring Simeone or Klopp.
Do it FSG for sake of everyone .
Listen, It's been clear for a while that Suarez and Sturridge carried Rodgers last season, the blokes refusal to change his approach in the face of extreme criticism from every pundit and fan alike is worrying,.. Sticking to one's principals is all fine and dandy if you don't expect much from life, but even Mourinho, the man who is in love with himself, can see that change is a good thing... I hate the bloke, but you can't argue with his work...
ReplyDeleteI remember Brenda stating he was looking for players to fit straight into the first team, not squad players, so what happened to that idea... Why play Johnson out of position, one of our worst performers replacing one of our best, I don't understand the thinking there... Why sub Lallana who again was one of the better performers for Borini, who at best, is a headless chicken...
I don't understand what he is trying to do anymore, their is no idea of how to move the ball forward, no idea of how to get players moving about creating space, no challanges when losing the ball, just bad tactics, bad team work and no clue of what he could possibly do to change the tide....
LFC are in serious trouble, and Brendan doesn't know how to sort it out..
The question is, do we want to go backwards and bring back Benitez? I say no way... Do we go for Klopp? Again I say no, he is fairing worse than Brendan with a far superior squad so I don't see what he will bring apart from a media circus, he can't keep his best players for some unknown reason...
How's about Jurgen Klinnsman... or my first choice Simeone... But Simeone isn't going to be available till the end of the season, so what do we do, get a second choice, or battle on through and hope we don't get too humilated along the way...
Either way, I really hope we at the very least stop getting our arse kicked every game... I'm terrified to watch the up coming Ludogorets game...
Thank christ for Lewis Hamilton and a little joy today.
We need a keeper, central defender, defensive midfielder & a striker. The exact same scenario even with Saurez. The list of mediocre players is unforgivable especially when Allardyce has demonstrated better transfer dealings. Aspas, Alberto, Assaidi, Markovic, Allen, Borini, Lovren. More duds than I care to remember. Then there's Ballotelli who is a good player but who never fit our style of play. A bit like asking Sumo wrestler to run a marathon!
ReplyDeleteRafa has no man-management skills whatsoever, go all out to bring Simeone. In my heart of hearts Mourinho's the only proven manager who can really bring glory back. Players would die for him on the pitch. Instead BR makes you want to bash him on the head with his own dossier until he at least plays two upfront & drops Gerrard & Lovren.
The exact same scenario for the last 5 years, DM.. but they always get overlooked.. This what happens when your obsessed with the future, you forget the present.
ReplyDeleteHey its weird you refrence
ReplyDeleteallerdyce
when in fact he had a rough patch last year
give brendan time thats is how you learn from your mistakes
Rafa benitez is the man on most peoples lips
ReplyDeletebut in 2010 most people thought his time was up and lots of people wanted him sacked
in hindsight it was a fatal decision as we ended up with roy hodgson
keep brendan give him another year if we are still as bad then maybe we need some assessment
Meanwhile on a Burussia Dortmund thread they are saying Klopp out Brendan Rodgers in (go take a look at the German league, before asking for him to manage our club)..... Can't defend him at the moment, we are playing shocking but I have never been a supporter of knee jerk decisions. The grass isn't always greener.
ReplyDeletei think we are in more trouble than people realize because on current form we could well get sucked into the relegation zone, Teams now know how to beat us and thats a real worry im looking ahead and its hard to see where we will collect points
ReplyDeleteFunny. but so true.
ReplyDeleteexactly i am happy i saw the green grass
ReplyDeleterodgers is the man for lfc , klopp never won anything big before dourtmount and simeone never won anything significant at another club before athletico
rodgers last year got the best out of all our attackers i think some time to find his mistakes and there is no way we will not ahve top strikers next year rodgers now knows his fantastic game is dependent on a quality striker
Stoke will be tough, Leicester, tough, Sunderland maybe but tough then Utd... I am dreading Utd at the moment, that'll be all we need right now....
ReplyDeleteTell me about it, how about we just Sir Alex a call, he's not doing anything at the moment
ReplyDeleteOur aspirations are different to the hammers, nevertheless they strengthend in the right areas with ALL the transfers making a tangible impact. Something even Rafa couldn't do, remember Aquilani? BR has wasted millions which to me represents gross misconduct & is a sackable offence.
ReplyDeleteI feel the keeper is shocking and that spreads through the team... I know he is a Rodgers signing. But we need a new keeper yesterday
ReplyDeleteWe've needed a DM to replace Mascherano. Lucas was substandard but we tolerated him.
ReplyDeletei dont want klopp i want rodgers to turn it around but i dont think he has strength or personality to to it ....i dont think he has the charisma to motivate players
ReplyDeleteI am still keeping faith in Rodgers and I think the call's for him to be sacked are unfair but if we fail to reach the knockout stage then I won't see it as unfair.
ReplyDeletebut gerrard said he was his best man manager
ReplyDeletesterling, suarez and sturridge all speak highly of rodgers
B R will not survive because the football has been horrendous to watch - horrible football - he created a role for Stevie G that does not exist in football -but everyone has sussed it now and being honest Stevie needs to go as well as BR - John Henry -YOU HAVE BEEN SERIOUSLY LET DOWN MATE
ReplyDeletesorry this iant an alias but an accident
ReplyDeletei used my old name never gonna crack teh code
my name now is englighten fan-reborn
We are Liverpool, we are not a club that waits for results. Our name should command respect and fear not oh we are in transition"
ReplyDeleteI like yourself want Rodgers to turn it around. I remember when kenny was in charge a few years ago, I couldn't handle his interviews, so spiky. Hodgson was boring, Rafa was socking towards the end.. I have warmed to Rodgers due to the football we have played under him.. I guess only time will tell if he can turn it around.
ReplyDeleteWe were truly shambolic today. Skrtel and Lovren are a bombscare of a partnership and as for Johnson... He's been crap for years and now he knows he's leaving he's just getting worse! Moreno is arguably Rodgers best summer signing, why persevere with Johnson who's neither got a future with the club or is contributing anything positive to proceedings.
ReplyDeleteSterling was anonymous today. Not really sure where we go from here. The news of Sturridge's prolonged injury problems is devastating. The packed Christmas schedule is looking pretty daunting at the moment
Rafa plays horrible football too
ReplyDeleteOn Saturday morning I was told by someone high up at Liverpool that sturridge is not injured and that he as fallen out with Rogers and has refused to play again for Liverpool and is on the move in January anyone else heard anything similar
ReplyDeletethe news was first broke out of the injury through a journalist who saw him break down in training
ReplyDeletetry harder next time!
Brendon Rodgers is not a man.
ReplyDeleteHe shamelessly keeps on pouring stupid excuses week in and week out.
Last season he had the genius of Suarez to cover up his bad sides..this year BR is left out to dry,and he is getting exposed as a fraud of a manager.
He is liar and stubborn thug who has nothing to offer.
Was only asking as I found it hard to believe to

Rafa gets results
ReplyDeleteof them 4 players one has left one is permanent injured one should be dropped and the other is out of form
ReplyDeleteGerrard made no tackles today ............that says it all
ReplyDeleteTo everybody here saying Klopp is doing bad so a tiny bit of research first.
ReplyDeleteDortmund's squad has been absolutely decimated with injuries this season. There have been quite a few games where he has had 8 first team players all out injured.
People are making excuses for BR by saying we have lost Saurez and DS being injured yet slamming Klopp when he has yet been able to field a full strength team and has had up to 8 first team players out and don't get me started on the fact that they are losing all their best players to Bayern because it is impossible for them to compete with them financially.
injuries have took the pace away from lucas but he is still a far better Dm than Gerrard ever will be ///that hollywood ball is in gerrrads DNA ITS JUST NOT IN HIM TO DO DONKEY WORK
ReplyDeleteAnd now Reus is out till 2015...
ReplyDeleteYet somehow he has made our defence even worse then it was last season, keeps playing players who are clearly out of form, refuses to play players that he has spent millions on and worse off, keeps playing Gerrard as a holding midfielder when it is plain to all that he can not play that role.
ReplyDeleteThen we have his tactics, his insistence on playing one up front and playing players out of position.
He had 75mil from the sale of Saurez + tens of millions more to find at 2 strikers and a defensive midfielder, so who does he buy, Lambert and Balo...
Are you seriously telling that out of all the football players in the world these were the only 2 strikers that we could sign and that we could not of signed Song who by the way is playing some great football for West Ham?
Lucas had a very good game considering he was very short on match fitness against Real Madrid, arguable the best team in the world at the moment.
ReplyDeleteHe did more in that game that Gerrard has done the entire season yet where is he?
You can use the same argument for Toure, did more against RM then Skrtel and Lovern have the entire season.
Teams knew how to beat us last season, the difference was we had Saurez yet BR has done nothing to fix those problems, if anything he has made things worse.
ReplyDeleteTo be honest I am dreading every game we have.
ReplyDeleteExactly, you take out 8 players from nearly any team and they will struggle.
ReplyDeleteThe Sunday Express are already reporting that FSG might replace BR with Klopp
ReplyDeleteAgreed but they should be higher in the league than they are. Injuries or not there is no excuse for them being 3rd bottom at this stage of the season. Look at some of the teams above them! There's no doubt he is a really talented manager but he isn't having a great season.
ReplyDeleteCall me shocked
ReplyDeleteIt won't be him then
ReplyDeleteBR has to stop with these pathetic attempts to apologize after continuously loosing. LFC are now 5 games without a win going into another busy week. It's sad to say but with how Rogers is managing the side, we don't have a chance at getting past the group stage of Champions League let alone getting out of this terrible form. Would be surprised to see if he makes it to the new year.
ReplyDeleteLook how we are struggle with the loss of 2 players. Where do you think we would be without another 6 players first team players.
ReplyDeleteMaster of disguise or what! :-)
ReplyDeleteStuart c.I prefer sooner than later, becauseit is obvious that we are losing our time with him.
ReplyDeleteThe context is that Lucas was as a DM has given his best for LFC but it was never enough then (in comparison to Monster Macherano's high standards) & it's not enough now. I will agree that he's a far better option than Gerrard now. Better positioning, tackling & distribution. I would much rather have Alex Song or some one more physical & athletic than Lucas.
ReplyDeleteAgreed but no amount of injuries would ever be accepted for us being in the relegation zone after a 3rd of the season. It just would not be allowed, who ever the manager was, they would be fired. That's just the way things are in English football.
ReplyDeleteReality Cech; it doesn't seem very likely that he'll want to be associated with the third rate dross that Liverpool are currently pedalling if he were to receive offers from any of those other clubs. But there's no harm in trying and I'd love to see him in goal for us; he oozes confidence and authority, two qualities the entire team seems to have misplaced.
ReplyDeleteJamie, is this article missing " Palace 3-1 LFC: BR blows it again. Dead man walking at Anfield? Job on the line?", cause when I click it, it takes me to the match 11 line up article.
ReplyDeleteI don't think there is much doubt this is the worst we've been since the dark days of Woy. We are abject in pretty much ever aspect of the game. I'm pro Rodgers but he has a massive job on to turn this around. We'll find out just how good a manager he is now.
ReplyDeleteA lot of people want Rodgers out and Klopp in, but Dortmund has 11 points after twelve games. Brendan has a similar record and he is not out of Champions League yet. A lot of people also want Simeone to come in because he became champion against Real and Barca. The same people want Benitez to stay out, but he became champion against Real and Barca as well... I don't know anymore...
ReplyDelete*Liverpool have only had fewer points at this stage of a Premier League campaign on one occasion - 1992-93, when they had 13.
ReplyDelete*The Reds have only managed eight shots on target in their last three league matches.
*They have conceded 21 goals in their last 10 league away matches.
How Johnson, Skrtel and Lovren have continued as first choice is just baffling. They should have been dropped long time ago. Gerrard too.
One player who really impressed me was Martin Kelly. The guy is looking super healthy. He was flattening whoever came up against him today. He is a proper defender and should have never let him go.
If Chelsea will sell Mata to Utd cause they weren't seen as a threat, LFC getting Cech should be a done deal.. We are only a threat to ourselves at the moment... Cech is an awesome GK, and way too good to play second fiddle to anyone, even Courtios
ReplyDeleteSkrtel made no tackles either...
ReplyDeleteHe's taking the place of a defensive midfielder, he mite as well not be playing as he is crap walkin around, cant spot danger, no leadership.i hope he cant agree a contract and moves on.team is weaker when he plays. Saw more leadership in real Madrid game from kolo toure than Gerard all season
ReplyDeleteSo is this another 9 million that Rogers has wasted? Clearly migs is not up to it,chech is a great keeper ,guess Rogers sees him as a right back.
ReplyDeleteTotally agree mate. I'm pro Rodgers too but as you say, he's got a major job on his hands turning this around. There's obviously issues in the dressing room that need addressed and something drastic has to be done or its inevitably going to cost him his job.
ReplyDeleteAll i can say is bring in Klopp Klopp Klopp Klopp! Pack your bags rodgers let a real world class coach show you how its done.
ReplyDeleteMr Klopp sign for Liverpool and bring Reus with you!
ReplyDeleteRodgers face towards the end of the match was of a man who did not know where he was. This is the first time he has after a match said "It's my responsibility as the manager, ultimately."
ReplyDeleteMe thinks he has already been told that he should prepare himself for the worst.
Did you watch us last season then?
ReplyDeletebecause rodgers admitted it was his fault we drew to villa when he played a flat midfield 4
and the year before at southampton cant remember why though
The things is where does he start. They seem woefully short of confidence and idea's. That would be bad enough but when you add in the lack of fight it beings to look terminal for Rodgers. If he turns this around he'll prove he's an elite manager not many manage to come back from this when the knifes are out.
ReplyDeleteIve seen a lot of people asking for BR to be sacked and replaced with Klopp, is it just me, but the similarities between these two are uncanny, young, progressive, flying high with some great players, then some of those players are sold, and in our case injured and then the whole thing unravels, look were Dortmund are now, played 12 with 11 points, LFC played 12 with 14 points, but to be fair to Klopp he hasn't spent what BR has but why is he struggling so badly now at Dortmund with essentially the same team, not sure if he would be the answer.
ReplyDeleteJust out of curiosity, what do our defenders do on the training ground? are they being couched to pass the ball around like they do in every game? one might assume that a certain type of partnership/understanding would rise from such exercise. but all i can see is a confussion and misunderstading between Lovren and Skrtel ?? WHY IS THAT??
ReplyDeleteIf it was up to me, Can, Moreno, Manquillo and Markovic would be playing every match until the end of the season.
Another thought; the owners trusted Rogers with 120 M pounds and it was wasted. Why would they trust him with any other funds in January???!! Personally I would not.
The article states that "He wants to be at a club that regularly plays in the Champions League". So why on earth would he join Liverpool? There's every likelihood they will not be finishing in the top four this season. At present, it looks like Cech would be more likely to achieve his aim at Southampton.
ReplyDeleteI just watched the Post match Interview of the 2-2 draw with Villa and Rodgers made no mention of taking responsibility.
ReplyDeleteReus is out for the rest of the season.
ReplyDeleteI think you confused 'year' with 'season' :D
ReplyDeleteDid he really? Really think about it? We were tactical yes. Defensively resolute- yes. Then we had alonso Gerrard behind a truly prolific Torres. We smashed many teams. Utd Real Madrid . We were competitive and had a balance between attack and defence.
ReplyDeleteAre you serious JK?Give B.R anymore money or players to burn and destroy, your off your head. The sooner B.R is out the sooner LFC can start rebuilding once again.LFC are going nowhere this season and B.R is to blame.LFC need to bring in a proven no nonsense manager who is able to adapt to games when need be,doesn't favour any players at all,and knows what to do and when to do it.Until then B.R has to lay with the players he has brought in and suffer the consequences.
ReplyDeleteEnd of the year not end of the season
ReplyDeleteHe was a very worried looking man indeed and although i think we should give him leeway i dont see FSG thinking the same.
ReplyDeleteToo easy even for Jamie..
ReplyDeleteCome on dude give BR some credit...
ReplyDeleteCech is clearly a striker.. Or play him at RB and let Moreno play LB and Manquilo can become the CAM..
Yes completely AGREE.
ReplyDeleteBut if Cech is available would be stupid to NOT go for him cause BR is the manager. Look at united they bought Mata even though Moyes could see the banner calling for his name..
Trust me I doubt Klopp or Benitez would mind having PROVEN players like Cech, Shaquiri and Martinez on their way through the doors come January..
BR on the oter hand will let them play first team... for the reserves whilst he picks the same idiots week after week
I agree in regards to lucas not being as good as March or Song but neither of those players play for us. Fact is lucas is our best defensive midfielder and as such should be playing that role before anybody else.
ReplyDeleteA good manager makes the best with the players at his disposal and that is something BR has proved this season to be very bad at.
Give our squad to a number of other managers and I feel they would do a much better job then BR
Yet there many times under Rafa where he was happy to defend a 1 nil lead and it costed us. I have read quite a few interviews by ex Liverpool players who played under Rafa who have stated that he would much prefer to defend a 1 nil lead instead if killing teams off
ReplyDeleteThe players are full of it at present just look at their effort at pretending to be committed sportsmen.
ReplyDeleteOr the balls to drop players like gerrard
ReplyDeleteIf Lfc finish mid table, i am pretty sure BR will lose his job. It is unlikely fsg would sack him mid season unless we are in a relegation battle. My opinion has always been that BR was not the right man for the job in the first place.
ReplyDeleteIts time to put SG on the bench and put LL in his place just to see how we fair. I feel we will do better as LL would give the nervy back 4 some much needed help!
ReplyDeleteRB Napoli contract is up at the end of the season. As much as I like RB he did do something similar when his contract was due for renewal at LFC. At the time i think it was Real Madrid who were his potential admirers.
ReplyDeleteMartin Skrtel kept his tackle percentage up today by not attempting any. He is averaging less than one a game.
ReplyDeleteAgree. Lucas will be sold to an Italian club for pennies and then Gerrard will only get worse. That leaves the club with no viable option in the position, and do we trust another Rodgers signing? Complete negligence from the manager. It's complete BS, why should half the squad even turn up for training? A sackable offence IMO. Rodgers is not doing himself any favours. LFC will only step forward once again when Gerrard is gone or there is a manager in place that isn't completely biased
ReplyDeleteAustralian players contribute to LFC's demise. Remember Viduka? Also bench warmer and no ambition Schwarzer just had to keep goal in the Chelsea game at Anfield where we blew it. I also think Jedinak has put in a few decent performances against LFC now as well.
ReplyDeleteI exist nowhere but here and a distorted version of reality.
ReplyDeleteYour sense of humour astounds me. I'm glad you explained though, we couldn't tell from the first 4 or 5 posts...
ReplyDeleteKlopp he's our man works on a low budget gets the best out players wins trophies and plays good football also effective in the transfer market
ReplyDeleteYou're talking pure crap.
ReplyDeleteWe knew that, "then" was the word that cracked the code
ReplyDeleteOnly you and Ghostwriter say, they are better then us,
the rest of us say, they are better "THAN" us.
And he was still ten times better than Lovren, says it all really. We would be lost without Skirts ATM.
ReplyDeleteI hope he continues to get results, IN ITALY.
ReplyDeleteAnd don't forget Tim Cahill, I think he's the most prolific goal scorer for Everton in the Merseyside Derby. Oh, even Kewell put in a very decent shift or two against us back in his Leeds days...
ReplyDeleteDortmund is at the bottom three of Bundesliga, and how a manager from a struggling club going to save another struggling club? Napoli is at top 3, Rafa is doing a good job there. I'd welcome Rafa than Klop.
ReplyDeletewith liverpool its one (suarez) we were really a 1 man band he made others i.e sterling henderson gerrard and co look better than they really were
ReplyDeletewe need rafa now!"!!
ReplyDeletegerrard is finished that says it all for a defensive midfielder plus he is no pirlo or alonso go gerrard in january please
ReplyDeleteBut BR said the team is excellent and marvellous, and its a matter of time before we see the end result. The team plays possession attacking football and pressing high up the pitch, with smart interchangeable formation depends of who the opposition bla bla bla bla. Plays with only one striker, make changes only from the 75th minutes onwards, when losing and have little time left still play the same possession that starts from goalkeeper to the defence and to midfield back to goalkeeper and concede corners happily because we have the best defence BR assembled
ReplyDeleteOf course it can't be. It's just his poor distribution and poor organisation skills, which do nothing but hinder the defensive effort.
ReplyDeleteAsk ur self is that good enough for liverpool club.
ReplyDeleteYEA.........4 mil for a goal.,
ReplyDeleteI was backing Rosberg. :(
ReplyDeleteAgreed about Gerrard; disagreed about sacking Rodgers.
ReplyDeleteAlthough a point would have been far from ideal, it would have been better than the abject surrender we saw. I mean, WHAT STUPID SUBSTITUTIONS !!!!!! Lallana and Allen were our best players, so he gives them the hook. Garrard and the ineffectual Coutinho should have been taken off, for maybe Can/Lucas and Borini. How many loose balls did Gerrard watch roll near him without any attempt to get to it???
ReplyDeleteI like him, and I hate to criticise, but what a dozy twonk Rodgers is.
And don't start me on Skrtel.....
Surprisingly not much has been made of the fact that Emre Can was our best or close to being out best player against both Chelsea and Real Madrid. Why was he dropped?
ReplyDeletewhat do defenders do? - media training (probably), obviously don't do defending.
ReplyDeleteThe whole team was s..t, not just one or two players mate....pointing fingers-Gerrard was static, Skirtel at his old antics, Lovren all over the place, Coutinho passing and final ball awful, Sterling nowhere to be seen...so on. It was a total embarrassment to watch. Brendan needs to change tactics, formation and starting eleven imo. Drastic times call for drastic measures....
ReplyDelete
