Mega-Deal: Liverpool to offer 'amazing' £25m maestro €1m per-month to sign for LFC

Last month, Liverpool co-owner John Henry sparked a raging frenzy of fan-speculation with cryptic tweet about long-time Reds target Marco Reus, and although a deal for the coveted attackers seems out of reach, it seems that LFC are pulling out all the stops to try sign the German maestro.

According to reports today:

* Reus is allegedly Brendan Rodgers' top target for the January transfer window.

* Liverpool plan to offer Reus a 5-year deal worth £200K a week (€1m a month)

* Reus apparently wants the move, and all LFC need to do is agree a fee with Dortmund.

Sounds too good to be true, right? This follows a report last month in Spanish newspaper Marca, which claimed:

* Reus has told Borussia Dortmund he won't be renewing his contract.
* Dortmund will be forced to cash in on him at the end of this season.
* Reus has a €25million buyout clause in his contract.

'Amazing' Reus seems certain leave Dortmund next summer, and when asked recently about the attacker's future, Sporting Director Michael Zorc told reporters:

"There are many clubs, even outside of Germany, interested in Marco. We will continue discussions, and then we'll see if we can achieve a positive result"

LFC legend Jamie Carragher is a fan of Reus, and when asked last month about the possibility of the German coming to Anfield, he enthused:

“I’d love LFC to sign Reus. [He's a ] great player, and would be one of the best players in the Premier League.”

Imagine if Liverpool had signed Reus instead of Markovic over the summer. The Serb cost £20m - which basically corresponds to the German's buyout clause - and I have no doubt he would've come straight into the team and made an immediate impact.

Is a player like Reus a major priority for the January transfer window? A prolific striker is arguably more imperative at this stage, but it all depends on what happens over the next few months. It's possible that Balotelli will become a prolific goalscorer for Liverpool, and if that happens, the need for another striker may not be as acute.

Similarly, if Markovic and Lallana start contributing goals/assists on a regular basis (along with Hendo and Sterling), then Reus may not even be needed. That said, there are certain top-class players that just have to be signed when available, and Reus certainly fits the bill.

  1. Him behind two strikers or one is enough for more goals than when Suarez was here.

Sign this man. He can play wide, central, or as a CF so his versatility is perfect. He is also not just a goal scorer, he creates for his teammates. I think Balotelli can still come good but he will never be reus and we need this world class presence to raise everybody's expectations. I see no chance of top 4 without this type of player. It is him or Vidal. No excuses any more. The best teams in the world need the best players.

  3. balotelli prolific????? are you messin? we've got more chance of sorting our goal keeping problems by putting coutinho in

  4. Beggers belief that we signed marko when he was available for slightly more the amount we have wasted in the last ten years on transfers is crazy ... Yes we have bought some quality players but we could of bought so much better

  5. I think we should sign him but at 25 he should only get £20K a week until he has shown he is worth moret.

  6. Sign him. Sign him now.

I think that just about sums up my feelings on the topic.

    Dream signing.

  8. I'm going to give you the benefit of the doubt and assume that's a joke considering he's currently making £60K a week. I'd think £100K-£140K would do it

  9. Absolutely agree with you. But this is one of those stories I'm not even going to consider until I see his name in our starting line up. Also wouldnt be a bad candidate for the #7 jersey

  10. It must be a joke, I think.

Imagine how many nurses you could employ for £20k a week!! Crazy.

He obviously means 20k annually. Typo.

  11. I think Reus is good.

  12. as unreal as it would feel if we pull this off, he is not what we need. should instead go for someone like martinez (fully fit) , matuidi or vidal though they all seem out of reach. but then again at 25 million reus is like that really expensive item you had your eye on all through out the year suddenly available at such an unbelievable price that you just click add to cart even though you dont really need it...

    ReplyDelete
  13. Well they can't have him cos we're going to sign him instead.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Ha ha yes sorry I meant per year, lol, rolls eyes. I mean who would pay someone the same as 40 nurses (let alone 400) just to play football.

  15. Praise indeed sign him now!

  16. a goal and an assist for origi tonight albeit against andora. i still dont think he will be able to seamlessly slot into the first team when he return next season. still far from being a finished product..

  17. I would love Liverpool to sign Marco Reus, but i think this rumour is like being entertained by a stripper... Nothing but a tease!

  18. Yeah, right, and monkeys might fly out of my butt.

  19. The sarcasm coming out of you two is worse than the hot air coming out of Roy Keane. But since it's Friday, and like Keane, you're both always good for a laugh I'll give you both a thumbs up

    ReplyDelete
  20. We definitely need two or three big signings. Defensive midfield is a piority. But when players like rues come on the market. Your just have to take them.

    ReplyDelete
  21. That would be the most bizarre party trick ever:)

  22. I guess I'm just a straight shooter who call 'em as he sees 'em.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Unfortunately I can't match Keane's majestic beard.

Careful though saying Keane is 'good for a laugh' if he overhears you, he's bound to go all Joe Pesci.

  24. Seriously though, I'm hearing good things about these nurses. Whenever someone brings up how much a player gets paid, people can't help but bring them up, so they must be in decent form. Hopefully our scouts are keeping an eye on them.

  25. Kid, with talent like that you could be a star! I'm talking Primetime, baby! Lunchboxes with your face on, your own cologne. Maybe even your own brand of cookwear.

Oh boy, I can smell it. I can smell those dollars. I can taste 'em...taste like...like...success!!

  27. It amazes me that some people are saying we don't need Reus. Since when were we too full of world class performers?
ALL the REALLY top clubs have players of the calibre of Markovic and even Lallana on the bench to keep the team up to scratch whatever the injuries/form/formation situation.
We have to stop thinking small. Look at Bayern, Chelsea, City Real, Barca- They have subs who would walk into our team...

    ReplyDelete
  28. I just don't dare to let myself believe there might be any truth to this

    ReplyDelete
  29. Haha, right on. It's like saying, 'We don't need Reus! We already have plenty in Dorrans, Will Hughes, Joey Barton and Kranjcar! Where's he going to fit!?'

    ReplyDelete
  30. People, seriously, get a grip. When world class players like Reus make themselves available, you f****ng snap them up. It doesn't matter how many players we have already covering his position! Because if we sign him, he's going to go into the first team anyway, and that's just bad luck to the poor dude dropped to the bench. It's part of the squad food chain. We're not a team like Real Madrid who could afford to let opportunities like this pass by, because Real Madrid have the power to go and chase world beaters whenever they want. Liverpool don't. What happens if hypothetically all the players covering Reus' position fail? Liverpool are going to feel stupid for rejecting Reus, aren't they?

  31. If this report is actually true, then it seems that FSG are realising that in this day and age, you need to break the bank-especially in the EPL- to be a regular title contender. Man Utd aren't conservative anymore, they'll go and buy any superstar that they want now. I don't know how we're supposed to keep up if we just keep on trying to find hidden absolute gem of players for a bargain price.

  39. Here's what I wanna know...if all of this is made up, why do they keep linking Liverpool out of all teams with Reus? I thought we heard the end of this months ago...

    ReplyDelete
  40. Erm, you may want to check the currencies used, it actually does...

    ReplyDelete
  41. Slightly more? Says who? Apparently this contract thing with Rues doesn't come in until next summer. If Rues could have been bought for slightly more than Markovic heveould have been. By someone if not us. Also slightly more would suggest the wages are similar what whereas they are probably tens of millions of pounds more over a contract if not a Year.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Unfortunately they have a notoriously appalling disciplinary record which makes Roy Keane look like a religious hermit.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Because we are notorious as a fan base for seeking out every little bit of info on our team so the press know that out pipe dreams will sell papers and get them website hits

    ReplyDelete
  44. That's true my man

    ReplyDelete
  45. If and I stress'IF' the possibility that Reus is available to LFC we should break the bank and sign him. In the past months we've offered 30m for the likes of Willian who is good but Reus will make a better positive impact on the first team.

Too many times LFC have let opportunities like this pass them by for example when Van der Vart was available for penny's (relatively speaking) and we passed on it and Woy opted for Joe Cole. How great that was! Let's get Reus playing with Studge with Balo having to fight for his place.

  46. Jamie I have read somewhere that the buyout doesn't come into effect until next summer, if memory serves me right at Borussia Monchengladbach he spent a lot of his games playing off the striker.

  47. Which Martinez? Jackson, Javi or Roberto

  48. The clue was currencies......

  50. I'd guess Liverpool are as interested in Reus as any other team in the world. Who wouldn't be? I'd also guess they made an enquiry over the summer but were swiftly knocked back, just like everyone else. Reus himself made very little noise and seemed happy to stay and there wasn't a single concrete offer made public. So all the cries of "sign Reus" during the summer were probably not falling on deaf ears but Liverpool went with realistic targets that they could actually sign. I wouldn't be surprised if Henry had about 10 fans a day come up to him on the street and suggest that "he" sign Reus for the club, so the tweet isn't entirely cryptic. Signing Reus just wasn't an option and no amount of pleading (from the club or the fans) would have changed that.

Things have changed and Dortmund are struggling. Liverpool are not doing much better but there is a real issue with Dortmund not being able to keep a hold of their best players and there isn't any sign of that changing. If they don't turn around their form soon they could be in trouble. Reus has seemingly been quite deliberate in not signing a new contract and that's a good move on his part. He's in total control and knows that Dortmund can't slap a prohibitive price tag on him without his approval. That means he gets to pick exactly where he wants to go. Any team in the world would pay that rumoured release clause so it will ultimately be up to him. For once the player has all the power and I think that's a good thing.

Has he already chosen Liverpool? I'm not sure, this still sounds like a rumour to me. I think the papers have just run with this story so often now it has an element of plausibility to it but I doubt there is much more to it than that. We've heard "Liverpool" and "Reus" together so often it now has a bit of a ring to it and of course Liverpool fans are lapping it up. I'd love to see if happening but it just doesn't seem credible, not yet. The club needs to get back in the top 4 and start producing some better form in the Champions League. Balotelli needs to score some goals and the defence needs to improve 200%. If all that happens then I'd agree that Liverpool are an attractive option for Reus, otherwise even the most one-eyed fan would have to admit that we don't really have that much to offer. Not at the moment.

  51. I can't tell you what a relief this is.....it's not been easy; the expensive University degree; grooming and training the monkeys; the inevitable, expensive visits to a proctologist (they just won't treat me on the NHS) and years of touring the pubs and clubs with my 'specialist' act just hoping to catch a break, any break.

Then there was that fateful performance on BGT where one of the monkeys attacked Amanda Holden and beat her about the face with one of her own Laboutins. I thought my career was over - maybe now all my years of hard work will finally pay off........

  52. Reus is absolutely incredible and one of the top players in the world, you don't sign him because you have a space in the team, he is the kind of player you build a team around, like Luis (RIP). Markovic just needs time, the boy has so much potential but is still very young and raw. We have some of the best young talent in the PL and given a few years of solid transfer activity, could be a real handful. If we signed a player like Reus, I would be very excited to see him in a team alongside, Sterling, Lallana, Hendo, Sturridge, Origi and with Markovic in there as well, not a bad attacking line up! Defence needs some work and I think a priority has to be a world class CM, like Khedira, Martinez etc - we have never really replaced Alonso.
