Done Deal? £7m star to leave Anfield this week after £20m signing kills his LFC chances. Perennial loanee?

Will Tiago Ilori ever get a break at Anfield? The signing of Dejan Lovren means that competition at centre-back is, once again, incredibly fierce, which is bad news for Ilori, as it means history is almost certainly about to repeat itself.

With Lovren, Liverpool now have SIX senior centre-backs in the first team squad (Lovren, Skrtel, Toure, Sakho, Coates, and Agger), which means that the chances of 21-year old Ilori getting any game-time are exceedingly slim.

The same thing happened last year - Liverpool brought in Sakho and £7m-Ilori on transfer deadline day, which gave the Reds FOUR senior centre-backs.

Due to the reduced number of games, this created unhealthy competition, which inexorably led to Ilori being farmed out on loan.

Ilori is back in Brendan Rodgers' squad right now, but according to reports today in France, the Portuguese youngster is on the verge of securing another loan deal.

According to Bordeaux President Jean-Louis Triaud (as reported by French newspaper Sud Ouest), Ilori will join Bordeux on loan at some point this week:

 photo ScreenShot2014-08-11at141737_zps2a29aa9e.png

I'm sure Ilori - described by Rodgers as a 'really big talent' - will be happy to go on loan again, but, privately, it must be galling for him to see how quickly Rodgers handed Javier Manquillo his first team debut.

Like Manquillo, Ilori arrived at the age of 20, and he never got a sniff of the first team. Manquillo only signed last week, and a few days after arriving in the country, he made his debut in a prestige game against Borussia Dortmund.

By all accounts, it appears that Rodgers is planning to utilise Manquillo from day one in the Premier League, something that Ilori can only dream of at this stage.

I just don't see how Ilori is ever going to make it at Anfield. Lovren and Sakho are both mid-20s, and have plenty of years ahead of them; Skrtel also has a good few years left, and when Toure and/or Skrtel leave, it's likely that Rodgers will go out and sign another experienced replacement.

Of course, it's equally likely that Manquillo will go the same way as Ilori. He played against Dortmund, but it wouldn't surprise me if Rodgers leaves him on the bench for most of the season.

  1. At 20 I don't see the problem with him going out on loan for another season. Although it would be better if it were to a Prem club.

  2. Central Defenders - Agger, Skrtel, Lovren, Sakho, Toure.

This summer Toure will be off and Agger probably inquiries or no inquiries.

Next summer Skrtel will be off and Ilori wll come in. Its that simple

  3. i would of liked to see him given a chance there is so much competion for places i believe Tiago has a big future hopefully with Liverpool

  4. BR has stated long ago Illori is one for the future )even stating he might play for LFC after BR is gone himeself) so its a non-starter topic for me, but im curious to much much he actually cost us as it has slipped my mind?

    ReplyDelete
  5. Can you do me a favour and give me this weekend's lottery numbers? There's a massive rollover, and I could do with the cash.

    ReplyDelete
  6. Agreed. If indeed he is "one for the future", I don't see how loaning him out to teams in foreign leagues will adequately prepare him for the high intensity of the EPL. Wish he could be loaned out to Soton for the season.

  7. Llori is a great prospect - what has happened to Texiera ?. he is better than Suso and Ibe (at this time).

    ReplyDelete
  8. I want to say it cost the club between £4-6m for him, but - as is probably the case - I could be waaaaaaaaay off.

    ReplyDelete
  9. With Toure rumoured to be going to Turkey and the potential for Agger to leave, it may not be a good idea to rush into sending Ilori on loan.

    ReplyDelete
  10. I think I know enough to understand what Rodgers wants - namely a young man with a couple of seasons regular football under his belt before stepping up to Liverpools level.

Centre backs are best considered a slow burn project for a good chance of success. Keeping him at the club playing the odd cup game or coming on when the game is won would do nothing for his development. Bordeaux finished 7th in Ligue 1 last season, they are a decent club, a step up from Granada CF with whom Ilori played last season.

  11. Lovren has what Carragher had and everything that he never had - best buy since Hyypia - with two yys.

    ReplyDelete
  12. Agree. Any Premier League team would be good. This move is very underwhelming for me. This lad has real potential and this move just suggests that Rodgers does not rate him. Wisdom gets a move to a PL team but Illori is sent to France. Not good for him.

  13. Where's Skrtel going!?

    ReplyDelete
  14. I think if agger goes, Ilori will definitely have a chance. as for the case wwith Manquillo, Johnson has clearly dropped below par in recent times (despite having a great game against Dortmund - once off maybe?). anywho, I see Manquillo making that spot his own on the right, and why the hell not, he looked great yesterday... One game and eprhaps maybe getting a bit prematurely excited, but they played quality opposition and had the number on a player who was a target of ours and scoring goals for fun in pre-season, while also having come off a great season for BVB... don't care to spell his name.

Manquillo was great! If we get that Moreno in, I see johnson finally being relegated to the bench where he belongs. No doubt his resultant hunger and experience will be useful throughout the season. mind has changed in recent times with regard to Glen, formerly being of the opinion of "off with his head!"...

But it's cruel to chop knobs (gettit? Johnson? Nob?) lol

  15. Could've put him in the Lovren deal!

    ReplyDelete
  16. I believe next year is the year for Llori. Agger and You're will most likely no longer be on the team and Skrtel may be sold off if his mental mistakes and own goals continue. Martin Kelly doesn't seem to have the ability to make the step up after his injuries and Coates looks to be a squad player at best. Loaning Llori out lets him develop his skills in Europe without us having to be the victim of his growing pains.

    ReplyDelete
  17. He's only played like 2 or 3 games though? I'm not sure about that... I'd sooner put my trust in Ibe and Suso than Texiera... talented as the boy is. But hey you may be right, and BR knows best ;)

    ReplyDelete
  18. Nowhere this season, but next summer he'll be off I reckon- in 2015 Liverpool will have Lovren 26, Sakho 24, Ilori 22 with either Lloyd Jones or Andre Wisdom (if all goes well)) probably the 4th choice Cup games CB.

Kelly will be sold, he's hit a development wall at the club

    ReplyDelete
  19. Loan him out get his value into double figures and sell who cares if they don't play it's how Chelsea stay ahead of dpf buy cheap and loan out sell for profit

    ReplyDelete
  20. I think the difference comes down to position. We've seem it time and time again where a promising CB is played too early and his confidence gets destroyed. We've seen it at the club before. Remember Paletta? He was thrown in too quickly and never recovered from it. It's the same as Savic at Man City. Both have now matured and were amongst the best CB's in Serie A last year. Rushing Ilori makes no sense at this point. We have better options available, and he'll be better served gaining experience elsewhere.

    ReplyDelete
  21. I think it'd be rather foolish to sell Skrtel, he has a lot to offer the club and is significantly better than Sakho IMO. Regardless of what age he is, or what age the rest are, the focus should always be on keeping and playing your best players. I don't see him regressing significantly between now and next season.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Toure's off to Turkey isn't he? Plus if Vermalen going to Barca is a real thing, there's talk of Arsenal going for Agger.
If all that happened then we've only got 3 senior CBs (I'm not counting Coates at this stage) and we might need Ilori to stick around, at least for the Carling Cup.
I think we should stall this move until deadline day so we can see what else occurs in the market.

Ilori is the future, he's so young ,center backs peak late anyway. He looks a bit light weight right now, a spell under a great defender like sagnol in a more physical league would do him a world of good

    ReplyDelete
  24. loaning him will realy help him develop

    ReplyDelete
  25. I think it's down to the individual in this instance, Stones did well for Everton last season.

    ReplyDelete
  26. It's brilliant that we have all these potential players coming through. If Ilori does not cut it than. bad cheese. move on. All signings will not necessarily make it at the top level. But loans are there to recoup investments. Eg. Is Borini worth 14mil? You make some. you lose some. Thats what gambling is. In this place the pawn is the player. Fact.

    ReplyDelete
  27. I think Ilori needs to fill out physically a bit before he's ready to be a premier league centre half which is why I think he's not been loaned out to a premier league club. It'll come. I think he's viewed as Skretl's replacement long term. Over the next couple of transfer windows our centre half numbers will deplete significantly, at which point Ilori will hopefully be ready to come in and challenge for his position.
The difference with Manquillo is that he may be better than anything else we've got in his position. He's at least ready to stake a claim. There's far more competition at CB in our squad than RB. No less than 6 international defenders ahead of him. Makes sense to me to buy a "big talent" when he's young and his wages are reasonable with the intention of developing him elsewhere for 2-3 seasons until he's ready. I'm sure he's been made aware of the plan for him and there's nothing to suggest the player is unhappy

    ReplyDelete
  28. I said while the Dortmund match was on that Lovren will be our most important signing this season.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Theycallmemrburt4:25 pm, August 11, 2014

I just think we are behaving the way big clubs behave. Sign a young player loan him until he gains experience and fills out whilst at the same time recouping loan fees that in essence pays of a quarter to half of their original transfer fee. Its kind of similar to buying a house and renting it so it pays of the 'death trap' (mortgage) especially if you don't have any need to live there at present

    ReplyDelete
  30. I know it was a friendly and that Dortmund fielded an XI that was not their strongest (was far from their strongest, actually), but it was nice to have a central defender about whom I did not have to worry. It's been a while since I have felt confident about that area of the pitch. Massive signing. Won't be long before he has his own song.

    ReplyDelete
  31. I'm pretty sure Ilori's chances of making it at Liverpool are currently a lot better than those of Coates, Touré and Agger and in the end, Sakho. Touré and Coates will probably move on still this window and I wouldn't be surprised when or if Agger does too. Leaving us with three senior CB's, one of which is hopeless. I think Rodgers puts him with teams that play football rather than in the Championship where he has to play clueless bruisers week in, week out.

Much more worried about the Moreno deal. Negotiations have apparently been going on for ages and the sevilla prez has denied any deals. Ian ayre fighting for every penny I guess.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Oh don't get me wrong, players of that age absolutely can make an impact. I'm just saying that you can understand why Rodgers' would be more cautious with Ilori than Manquillo.

  39. I am actually in favour of that believe it or not. Never got the point of txt language and never will.

    ReplyDelete
  40. I have to go with BR on who is playing and who isn't. Ilori should go out on loan if he needs to play. However, I wonder why BR wouldn't look for a PL team to get him PL experience? How does Manquillo get into the discussion...as an example? The difference is night and day. We have CBs a plenty...we need better FBs...period. If Manquillo sits the bench it will be a real shame. He played very well Sunday...against Mkhitarian too.

    ReplyDelete

lovren ,sakho and iloris are the future

    ReplyDelete
  42. Just write haha, if lol is what you are reffering to..

    ReplyDelete
  43. That is why I am worried. If we truly cared about Illori, we would have loaned him out to a decent PL or Championship club to get used to the way of football. We do not want to be like Chelsea who just loan all their players to random clubs for no reason and eventually end up selling them.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Can't see Anger and Coates being at the club much longer (although Coates didn't do himself any harm) Toure roo will be gone at the end of the season mist likely. Ilori likely to return to make that four. Still quite hard to get a game in that situation too.

    ReplyDelete
  45. I think Coates did enough in pre-season to play in some of the tourneys. He had a terrible injury so he has lost time. He's big enough and he needs to learn more. I'm thinking LC/FA Cup matches for him paired with Lovren or Skrtel...whoever doesn't need the rest.

    ReplyDelete
  46. The thing with a player like Ilori is if you send him on loan you want a club that offers guaranteed playing time otherwise there is no point in sending him on loan as at this point he needs to develop.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Nevergonnacrackthecode5:02 pm, August 11, 2014

championship is not good enough for iloris

    ReplyDelete
  48. Chelsea are milking it by loaning out all these young players. Bought at a relatively low transfer fee and sold for a huge profit.

If the player is good enough then he will stay, if not then they are smiling all the way to the bank.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Just write haha if laughing out loud is what you are reffering to..

    ReplyDelete
  50. There is nothing random about what Chelsea are doing - Liverpool are only just starting to follow their lead - buy talented youngsters, loan them out, if they develop enough keep them, if they don't sell them for a handy profit as they are written down the books (amortisation) with someone else having paid their wages.

Its a good way of staying within the FFP rules.

    ReplyDelete
  51. It struck me that this could be what's in store for Ilori. Loaned out to a second European Leagus in a s many years. Sounds a bit like shopping him around doesn't it? Keep his name afloat while he's performing and getting better.

    Our most likely squad:
    strikers: sturridge,bony,lambert
    wingers: sterling,lallana,markovic,ibe
    midfielders: coutinho,henderson,gerrard,allen,lucas,can
    full backs: johnson,flanagan,manquillo,moreno,
    center backs: skrtel,sakho,lovren,toure
    goalkeeper: mignolet, jones

will lucas, enrique, johsnon, borini still be there that is my question

    ReplyDelete
  54. I read that Toure is in the process of being sold. Fee agreed.

    ReplyDelete
  55. I tried to make sense of it...even took off my shoes to get to more digits...but alas I couldn't keep it all straight. It is all just vague accountant talk to me. Made my head hurt. Still didn't answer who it's gonna be...but we need another AVAILABLE striker before the window closes. I don't want Cavani because I think he's over-rated. I don't want Lacazette because he's had one good year ...in France...which means nothing. Tevez would be good. I'd like the team to relook Remy. I'd take Bony and smile...but we need somebody.

    ReplyDelete
  56. That article explains how complicated the transfer business is. It is not as simple as making up a random list of player names and indicating who LFC should sign, selling players surplus to requirements or taking risks on 'players for the future and even going for the biggest name out there.

What it does shows is that FSG are pretty clued up when it comes making LFC a financial powerhouse commercially and asset wise.

Renewing Suarez's contract last season and making him our highest paid player was a masterstroke = one hell of a profit = FSG know what they are doing.

    ReplyDelete
  57. Four centre backs was not unhealthy last season was it? Arsenal and Man City had only three and everyon says its not enough. City clearly agreed having paid an incredible fee for Mangala. We had less games then too... Ilori is young and has big potential let him go on loan for a couple of seasons and see if he makes it to to the first team.....this is the new way around FFP....buy them young and relatively cheap and loan them out until their ready....if not good enough still make money back or even a profit! Chelski used it to good effect for last two seasons, like we have with Borini and Assaidi (we will make healthy profits on both this window)

    ReplyDelete
  58. Whew...that's I thought thanks;-)

    ReplyDelete
  59. Will the season start already?

Really looking forward to seeing us ripping teams apart again. Do not want to bang on the drum but Rodgers has brought an attacking style that other teams absolutely hate defending against.

Gone are the days of being predictable and one dimensional :-)

Add to that Champions League football...

Should be a hell of a season.

You know Arsenal, Chelsea and Man City will be fighting it out. I think Spurs will be strong this year as well with Pochettino at the helm.

As for Man Utd, its a very tough one to call. I think if they are in the top 6 and going strong come Christmas then they will be in the mix at the end. If they are not doing so well I can see them imploding.

I also think Everton will be pushing hard as well.

I think were in for a hell of a ride.

    ReplyDelete
  62. Think Everton are going to have a tough season even though they have managed to sign Lukaku.

UTD will be much better this season but you just have to take a look at their defence :-o No wonder they are so keen on Hummels.

We will once again be fighting it out with City, Arsenal and Chelsea

  78. I think the defensive ranks will be thinned out by the end of the transfer window. Toure, Agger Coates Ilori are the ones likeliest to move but I wonder about Ilori the most. I just don't see Coates being effective so far so he isn't a bid deal to me. Ilori has speed but is he too small to be a central defending force? When he signed he looked like a bean pole but maybe he has hit the gym in the last year. Not sure that Toure will remain although I like his experience and mentoring potential for the likes of Lovren and manquillo.........

so jaimie it is not all gone wrong , i see him replacing skrtel next season iloris

    ReplyDelete
  83. I'm a bit hesitant because we still haven't replaced Suarez. Granted no one is going to come in and produce at that rate, but we haven't signed a player who I feel comfortable stating will score 15 PL goals this season.

The burden is going to fall to Sterling, Henderson, Coutinho, Lambert and Sturridge. And I think Sturridge is the only player who we'd have realistic expectations of reaching 15 goals. Which means not only do we have to replace Suarez's 31, we'd have to replace the handful drop off for Sturridge as well.

So now we're talking almost 40 goals that we have to find a way to replace this season.

    ReplyDelete
  84. Sakho, Skrtel, Ilori and Lovren - two players for every position are needed to compete at the highest level. Surely Agger and Toure will go this window...? Yes, there are question marks over Coates and Ilori - I reckon one of these two will go out on loan. Kelly is meant to also be able to play centre-half. Unfortunately, I feel his LFC days are numbered, as he hasn't looked the player he was before injury, not by a long way.

    ReplyDelete
  85. I think he will. He's shown promise, and with some more experience he could come back into the fold, or at least forge a decent career at another EPL club.

    ReplyDelete
  86. I'm not too sure about that one mate. I watch a lot of league 1 action (French league) and when Lovren was at Lyon he was a massive liability. His concentration was always off in the important times. I was right about Sakho last time and I hope that Lovren proves me wrong at LFC.

how can we go from SAS to potentially having two 33 year olds up front ?

rodgers succeeded with kennys team , now he is trying to make his own team and if he does we are doomed, because he does not know how to sign good players apart from one fluke window .

liverpool should look at the athletico manager that signed falcao and arda and bring him in as DOF

    ReplyDelete
  103. Our center back situation will be sorted by the end of the window, its likely that two out of Toure, Coates and agger will leave. I've just seen that we've been linked with Eto, which seriously worries me for a number of reasons. Firstly we need a proper fast forward as second choice to sturridge and eto ain't that. Secondly are our board actually on the cheap side, look at our net spend under rodgers and it's clear he's performing miracles. For me our season rests on the shoulders of D. sturridge which just isn't acceptable seeing he's injured a lot. The Moreno thing is a joke too

  106. It seems like a sensible thing to do. Ideally we'd move on the players we don't want in the long term. That would probably be Agger, Toure and Coates, although Coates has been decent in the pre-season. That would put Ilori in a good position as a 4th CB in the roster. The problem becomes the over-abundance of players that we don't really need so until they're out the door it's best for Ilori to spend another period on loan. If he can get regular first team action at Bordeaux that will be another great step for him. Hopefully then in the next 6-12 months we let go of the players we don't need, find them a good home, and then Ilori can come back to press for a spot as a more complete player. I'm still bemused by the idea that having too many players could be a problem.

  107. He's still very young, so if he does go out on loan then at this stage probably best to do another season in Spain where he has a chance to develop his technical side, no to lump it up the field, he would then certainly not have a future with us. But let's see, if Toure and Agger leave then he will probably stay as Coates is in last chance saloon and the jury is out on Sakho.

As for Manquillo, different position and certainly a different scenario. RB is a problem for us with Johnson having been the main choice. Kelly is a sick note and not really at the required level. Flanno on the other hand may feel a little disappointed, but again he's young and will be a fixture. I can see Flanno and Manquillo being the interchangeable choice for RB. Could do with seeing Johnson go, but it's unlikely with his wage. Come on Harry, take him off our hands, you can have him for nothing.

So let's hope Toure, Agger and Johnson will be found new homes soon.

  108. Look at the facts....there are a dearth of available strikers that are top class generally....and they are all at mega money clubs on massive wages. Monaco wanted a £10m loan fee for Falcao with no guaranteed fee at the end plus we had to pay his £200k per week wages. He has just come back from serious knee injury and it might take him half the season to find his feet. Plus like all South Americans he wants to go to Madrid. We only wan a stop gap backup before Origi comes back and Eto'o scored a goal every other game started last season. If we buy Bony and give home the £100k per week he wants what are we going to do with next year???

  109. Looks like Toure is on his way out, so there is another space opened up.

  110. I think BR must have had a good reason to give manquillo a game recently. He was vindicated because the boy played well, sonlwts not give BR a hard time. As for illori, if he is good enough and he gets a break, then he sure will be playing in the first team at some stage. Going out on loan in the interim period is certainly not a bad idea, helps him experience some regular game time.

  111. He is a young player what is the issue with him going out on loan?

If he was put in to the side and made a mistake there would be an article on here saying the Rodgers was guilty of tactical 'negligence' for playing him and costing the club points.

Loans are a good idea to develop players.
