With the endless pursuit of Sevilla star Alberto Moreno seemingly on the rocks, time is running out for Liverpool to sign a quality left-back. Recent reports suggest that the Reds are still interested in Ajax left back Daley Blind (along with Manchester United), and according to one of the Dutch club's coaches, the defender is almost certainly set to leave.
Liverpool have been heavily linked with Blind over the last couple of months:
JUNE: Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf revealed that the Reds held transfer talks with Ajax Director of Football Marc Overmars.
JULY: Italian newspaper TuttoSport claimed that Ajax are willing to sell Blind for €20m, and Liverpool are one of the clubs interested.
When asked last night about Blind's Ajax coach Richard Witschge told reporters:
"Daley Blind will be leaving soon. I have a feeling. He has been training by himself. I think he has done that because there's something going on"
Some info about Blind:
* 2010-2014: Winner of four league titles in a row with Ajax.
* 2013: Ajax Player of the Year.
* 2014: Named Dutch Player of the Year.
* 140 apps for Ajax since 2010.
* 13 apps for the Dutch national team.
* Can play left back, or defensive midfield.
Blind put in some good performances for Holland during the World Cup, and contributed one goal and three assists as Louis Van Gaal's team made it to the semi-finals. After witnessing Holland's memorable annihilation of Spain, Arsenal legend Thierry Henry raved:
"The Dutch owned it. That was the final we wanted to see four years ago and the man of the match was Blind. The way he played - he did it all to a tee. Whatever van Gaal asked him to do, he did more."
Alan Shearer added:
"Daley Blind down that wing [was] absolutely brilliant. I have never seen that Spain back four pulled around as much as they were."
The footballing education received by young players at Ajax is amongst the best in the world, so Blind certainly has the pedigree. He also has experience of winning trophies, and four league titles in a row ensures that he'll have a strong winning mentality.
Given the Holland connection, Van Gaal appears to have the advantage re this particular transfer, but Man Utd recently spent big-bucks on Luke Shaw, who is clearly earmarked as the club's number-one left back, and with thre reduced number of games available next season, it will be hard to keep both players happy.
Additionally, after last season's glorious Premier League capitulation, United can't offer Champions League football (or indeed any type of European football); combine that with the probability that Blind will be undisputed first-choice at Liverpool, then Anfield is clearly the preferable option.
€20m is a bit steep, but it's infinitely preferable (IMO) to £18m+ on Alberto Moreno, a player who doesn't have Blind's domestic or international experience.
Should Liverpool scrap the pursuit of Moreno and throw everything into trying to sign Blind?

Practically we do not stand a chance of signing Cavani/Falcao/Reus.
ReplyDeleteRodgers has wasted money on Lallana and Emre can. He shouldve opted for Vidal instead. Though Lovren is a good signing, he coulve tried for Hummels (almost the same price). He couldve tried for Fillippe luis/Ricardo rodriguez/Blind, instead of wasting time on Moreno. At the start of transfer market we needed a solid left back and a solid striker. After spending 100 million we still need a solid left back and a solid striker. WHAT THE CRAP IS RODGERS DOING???
Now that these cant be reverted we should:
1) Force the move of Moreno
2) Sign Icardi/Bony + Lavezzi
3) Kick Glen johnshon out of the team and get Dani Alves
4) Get Diego Lopez as back up goal keeper (heard Real madrid is kicking him out)
why are Lallana and Can a waste of money? lallana was nominated for player of the year and as the going rate for defenders isn't much less, i don't think we overpaid by much. Can has impressed most people in pre season and £10 m isn't a great sum. Vidal is a great player and we'd all love to have him, but £40m plus for a player of his age doesn't fit our model (right or wrong) and there are doubts about his knee
ReplyDeleteWe don't stand a chance of getting Cavani/Falcao and Reus but we do with Vidal? wise up. Lovren is actually better and a hell of a lot more mobile than Hummels. have you watched any of the pre-season games? Can looks quality - strong, good with the ball at his feet and composed. Dani Alves is 31 by the way and equally inept at defending as Johnson.
ReplyDeleteI think the signings Rogers has made are spot on, no point signing players who don't want to fight for the shirt.
Signing Moreno and Bony would be great business - let's hope it happens, and lets hope the fans get behind the manager instead of slagging off the signings before they've kicked a competitive ball.
I have a feeling Man Utd will buy him, he will provide competition to Luke Shaw
ReplyDeleteYou know what again No one wants to Come to us its that plan and simple
ReplyDeleteAnd FSG are happy we are linked to every player now Reus Cavanni Falcao.
Cause they will never come Nor will Liverpool go for any off them Ian Ayre will come out with a story why we missed out,
Think off this We have sold one off the best strikers in world and haven't replaced him with even Half as good player to him.
Daniel get injured like every year . Who have we got Imagine this fact.
Blind was linked to us weeks ago nothing happen . We had a Super amazing year last year . Man City Have Dzeko Aguero Jovetic Man united has Rooney Van persie Chicorito we have Sturridge only we are not attractive even tho we are in champions league
would take blind over moreno every day of the week! Can anyone say categorically that moreno can actually defend? He looks pretty ropey, and that's on youtube...
ReplyDeleteunfortunately, fellow bob, i believe you are correct.
ReplyDeleteGood call. Only problem with Blind, is that he's over 12 years of age, Buck won't be interested.
ReplyDeleteWell said
ReplyDeleteIf we bought Diego Lopez, he'd start.
ReplyDeleteI agree we should buy him though.
it's not on the rocks.
ReplyDeleteYes, that guy is someone you would be comfortable with playing cl final...
ReplyDeleteYou are so wrong. We should be disrespective to every signing BR makes because he knows nothing. We should be saying that manu will beat us 4-0 because without Suarez we are shiiite. And Gerard should retire immidiately because he cost us the title.
ReplyDeleteI'd sign Daley Blind over Moreno any day of the week as he offers the best of both worlds in terms of his defensive and attacking abilities. He would be a superb signing. We still need a quality forward though as well and if we do get these players in I feel we will go from strength to strengh
ReplyDeleteBack to you Bob..
ReplyDeleteOur problem is simply that we are not sufficiently aggressive to go out and get the targets we need. We knew Suarez was leaving for the whole of last season. I am shocked and disgusted at the ineptitude of Ian Ayres and his team. Chelsea, Man City and even the scum have a far better recruitment team than we have. Fundamentally, we are much too weak in that area to sell LFC to the top players. Until we get that changed, we will struggle to bring in players of the quality of Reus, etc.
ReplyDeleteMoreno will be signed for 16m after the super cup which just happens to be in the UK, i reckon the deal will be finalised while the player and club officials are over here for Tuesdays game.
ReplyDeleteRule of thumb, don't judge a player by youtube either positively or negatively.
ReplyDeleteAt the moment we have Sturridge, Lambert and Borini (obviously he may move to Sunderland). We also have Sterling who can quite easily play up front and has done many times at youth level.
ReplyDeleteThere is also another striker on the way from what i've heard, i'm hoping its true as you will be pleasantly surprised if it comes off.
I assume you mean Cavani...?
ReplyDeleteYes the man who guided us to second last year clearly has no idea what hes doing. At least see how the team play before slagging off the manager and the purchases.
ReplyDeleteAs for securing Blind, what on earth are people thinking??? It is obvious that this lad will only go to play under his former national manager. Just a thought.....what would have happened if Rodgers had agreed to Van Gaal being appointed as our DoF, or whatever his appointment was going to be? Imagine the players that would have come to LFC on Van Gaal's recommendation.....we have so badly missed out there
ReplyDeleteSounds like a die hard Raf'alite ^^ up in here...? Cuts off his nose to spite his face. Watch another sport mate, you clearly don't know much
ReplyDeleteabout football.
and you clearly don't know much about sarcasm ;)
ReplyDeleteRodgers didn't want to have DoF over him. Hat down for that..
ReplyDeleteLallana is going to be next Andy Caroll.
ReplyDeleteEmre can <<<<<<< Vidal
Lallana+Can= 35 and Vidal = 40 million.
We should give priority to present and not future. If we do good now, more good players will be attracted. Why do you think Sanchez opted for arsenal? His girl friend wants to shop in london!!! Give me a break. With us success is not guranteed. Even players like Shaqiri( who has to prove a lot to be a good player IMO) are not preferring us. I am fed up of Rodgers signing "WONDERKIDS". Liverpool had the chance to build a world class squad with suarez money plus other cash, but they have failed miserably.
I hope I am proved wrong in future and I will be the happiest person if it happens.
My take on the it is if i is a question of LVG or Rodgers (which it effectively was) i'd have Rodgers all day long. LVG is a great coach, but i think FSG hit the jackpot with Rodgers and they should be commended for their brave choice.
ReplyDeletei hope you mean Reus :-)
ReplyDeleteAs Bob below wrote, I tried with a bit of sarcasm(It's an English club after all) because I got tired explaining people that the new dawn has come, and that it's a beautiful morning already...
ReplyDeleteI expect it is the same one I have heard about no names but he could be more tidy.......
ReplyDeleteYou SERIOUSLY consider Lambert an option?? He seems to be a happy liverpool fan who got a lottery ticket to play for us. He is Sooo not suited to our pace and skills. I shouldnt comment on Borini as i have never seen him play much. But in the current scenario if we dont sign a very good striker ( atleast half as skillful as Suarez) we are in deep trouble.
ReplyDeleteUnfortunately, life is not the same as football manager, you can't sign every player you want
ReplyDeleteI hope you're wrong too mate! :-).
ReplyDeleteThis time of year is frustrating, especially as the two positions that need filling (left back and Suarez replacement) haven't yet been concluded. If we get Moreno/Blind and (my wet dream) Reus, this transfer window will be a fantastic success.
I don't want to spoil your poetic musings here but It's the middle of the afternoon here and p*ddling down with rain :-)
ReplyDeletePub time!
ReplyDeleteYes couple of preseason matches after a long season AND a WC from a guy his age give you enough material to write him off.. And you do realize that he will be on the pitch only in last minutes to rest DS when we are leading or when we need to score the old fashioned way?
ReplyDeleteno way we need a left back with pace to burn
ReplyDeletei think liverpool should rather get cissoko then the bind dutch guy
I live in a city on the Mediteranian coast which has 40 degrees average during August and it is also raining.. Nevertheless, a beautifull morning...
ReplyDeleteplease there is nothing to suggest can cannot be as good as vidal is in the future , this is like when people wanted sjnieder rather then coutinho
ReplyDeleteand lallana is an attacking mid that can play winger vidal simply cant
With Arsenal success is guaranteed? What kind of a success, just being in the CL, being in the top of EPL, yES, a dream club...
ReplyDeleteNot for me, he lacks vision
ReplyDeleteBrother: What if Sturidge is injured? Who are we left with???
ReplyDeletelacks vision lacks pace , lacks experience in a proper league
ReplyDeletethat's a great shout about coutinho - i was in the Sjnieder camp and happy to be proven totally wrong AGAIN! :-)
ReplyDeleteplus i am against signing any dutch players because of van gaal
ReplyDeleteMoreno has been our #1 target from the start and still believe he will be a Liverpool player before the window shuts.
ReplyDeleteBorini or another striker we will bring in if we can find him- thought that it was obvious that Borini leaving and striker coming is strongly related. With very capable EPL player Lambert and false nine Sterlin.
ReplyDeleteAnd then there's those damned windmills and clogs too.
ReplyDeleteDid Southampton not play with pace and skill last year, they played quick counter attacking football in which Lambert thrived to score 13 premier league goals. To dismiss him is ridiculous.
ReplyDeletemarkovic can play upfront as a fake 9
ReplyDeleteand evnthough lambert and borini is not what we want , chelsea the title favorites are in a simmilar boat to us
one world class striker: sturridge,costa
one old man: lambert,drogba
one useless guy that can run: borini, torres
and one fake 9: markovic,schurlee
yeah just hope it is not like salah
ReplyDeletewhere the player becomes impatient and bites the bullet
well said
ReplyDeletesorry, don't understand the joke can you clarify?
ReplyDeleteBlind for 20m is outrageous! The guy was a free agent a season ago! He is so slow, he would be torn apart in the PL. Maybe, he would make a better DM or a LM but he certainly would not be any improvement on Jose. IMO, we should not bother.
ReplyDeleteIf the Moreno deal is proving difficult, let's go for Digne! If as rumored PSG want to raise money, may be would have better luck signing Lucas Digne. He's a better player than Moreno, anyway.
blind is not good enough
ReplyDeletei would not judge on world cup
ron vlaar looked like a rock , and all those chille defenders looked world beaters despite coming from nottingham forrest
can't manquillo play left back?
ReplyDeletemaybe that is why br is placing such an emphasis on defense (chelsea proved you can compete with a better defense then attack)
ReplyDeletemoreno would be fantastic
but i think we need a decent cdm gerrard is on hsi last leg while lucas has never recovered from the injury
maybe morgan schniderlin from southampton according to their fans he is their most important player
At 40 degrees average I'd be delirious too:-)
ReplyDeleteLambert is a solid #3 striker, but nothing more. We brought him in while we still had Suarez, I believe, so BR presumably didn't get him as Sturridge's sole backup. He is an option, just not the next one. Besides, writing him off like that is kinda harsh, considering he had a pretty good season with Soton and got a call up for the WC, even if England was terrible. Also, remember he is in his 30s... It takes a bit longer for him (and Stevie and kolo for that matter) to get to match fitness than it does the rest of the squad. He was misfiring in preseason, but you can't be sure how much of it was lacking fitness and how much was him lacking quality.
ReplyDeleteI'm assuming you meant to put a comma after "no way".... We DO need a guy with pace to burn. But for the record, Blind >>>>>>> Cissohko. I wouldn't be surprised if he was faster too.
ReplyDeletewindmills and clogs are stereotypical Dutch items...
ReplyDeleteWouldn't be ideal. He's mainly a RB, like Flanno, except not as solid.
ReplyDeletenot as solid on the left.
ReplyDeleteWho exactly have UTD signed so far?
ReplyDeleteI read they forced Howard Webb to come out of retirement because they could not get anyone.
ReplyDeletedid rodgers get liverpool second or luis suarez ?
ReplyDeleteThe transfer committee is basically like a DOF but it is different in that there is not one only one person pulling the strings.
ReplyDeleteIf Comolli was still at the club we would have been doomed.
yeah suarez,modric,bale
ReplyDeletecomoli is so bad at buying players
if you fed up of Rodgers signings then you're supporting the wrong team mate, feel sorry for you, and oh i forgot! You´re proved wrong already during last season when people like you were saying that with those "wonderkids" there is no way to brake in the first 4 in the league....
ReplyDeleteCarroll, Downing, Adam
ReplyDelete+- £62 million on 3 players at £20 million average each is one way of getting it horribly wrong.
Rodgers.
ReplyDeletebut that was not comolis fault , daglsih admitted those where his targets ,
ReplyDeletewhat you cannot deny is comoli got the most expensive player and the third most expensive player ever for a combined fee of 33m
IMO southampton at home is what would happen to liverpool all season if suarez did not come in
ReplyDeletesure we beat man u,stoke and villa
but against stoke we missed chances suarze puts in his sleep , we almost drew
while villa , mignolet made his best save
Comolli had to convince FSG that Downing was going to supply Carroll with loads of goals.
ReplyDeleteComolli was the DOF. He should shoulder most of the blame as he approved of all the signings.
so daglsih walks away blame free
ReplyDeleteif comoli was manager and daglsih dof you would have still blamed comoli
I am not saying Dalglish should walk away blame free. It was Comolli who thrived on soccernomics.
ReplyDeleteThere is a reason why both Comolli and Dalglish were sacked.
point is comoli can spot diamonds
ReplyDeletesuarez ,modric and bale are all world class players
rodgers has not signed one player of that quality
Ricardo Rodriguez would be great
ReplyDeletesee i want to support rodgers but the signing of aspas and alberto put serious doubt in my head
ReplyDeletejk after the stoke game put an article up of molby and aldi saying aspas would fail because he is too physically weak , how did rodgers not see what these failures in management see?
plus alberto never had the assets to play in rodgers high intensuty play , so why did he buy him?
so would bale
ReplyDeleteI can smell bias here.
ReplyDeleteblind is good but not fast enough for the system rogers plays that coupled with the fact that lovren isnt that quick and sako inst a speed machine will lead to us getting exposed at the back especially if Gerard is playing
ReplyDeletehow can you possibly justify the signings of aspas, alberto, borini, assaidi, allen, sakho, mignolet and lambert?
ReplyDeleteif we get one just open , it will open up the flood gates
ReplyDeletelook at arsenal signing ozil this paved the way for sanchez
You have a good memory!
ReplyDeletetry to sniff yourself, you are the most dedicated nut hugger in the forum world, (and im on reddit).....the type who thinks br is the virgin mary's brother. i support br but that doesnt mean he cant make mistakes and is not immune to criticism...geez dude..grow a pair...
ReplyDeleteComolli had to convince FSG that Downing was going to supply Carroll with loads of goals.
ReplyDeleteSorry, but how do you know this? Were you in the room when this alleged discussion took place?
Please refrain from posting silly questions like this. You are not promoting debate in any way. It is obvious who Man Utd have signed (in that it is a fact that they've signed several players) so what is the point in asking the question?
ReplyDeleteI have not once justified the Assaidi signing even though he was signed for under £3 million. I have also criticised Aspas and Alberto in an article which Jaimie Kanwar posted on this very site.
ReplyDeleteBorini could be sold for a profit. Mignolet, Allen, and Sakho are all part of the long term project under Rodgers and Lambert with a wealth of experience came at £4 million.
Opinions differ I guess. Sturridge, Coutinho?
I do not have to sniff anything. The club has moved forward since Rafa's last season followed by the appointment of Hodgson and Dalglish.
ReplyDeleteI do not have to sit here and rant like a child.
'They [FSG] asked me what the risks were and I said if things don’t go well you’ll lose something on Andy, but it is difficult to measure whether you will make money if things go well because Liverpool aren’t a selling club and he could be here for the next 10 years.’

I posted the link.
ReplyDeleteThat doesn't represent what you posted.
ReplyDeleteThe OP suggests that with Van Gaal "Imagine the players that would have come to LFC"
ReplyDeleteWho have UTD signed in this transfer window which will make other team go WOW?
Which relates to my question
Right. I have dug up all my tulips and I will never eat another clog again
ReplyDeleteAspas has been sent on loan to increase his transfer fee. Alberto has been sent on loan either to increase his transfer fee too or gain experience.
ReplyDeleteNot every transfer is going to cut it. That is just the way it is.
If we have the chance I would take Blind over Moreno every day in the week...........................
ReplyDeleteCourtesy of Basstunedtored
ReplyDeleteOf the 235 players who featured for at least 270 minutes at Brazil 2014, the Croatian centre-back posted the joint-eighteenth top speed.
ReplyDeletelooks like rodgers has made another howler
ReplyDeletemarkovic already injured and lallana
What have you to say about that?
ReplyDeleteOh so Rodgers asked for them to get injured and now you base that on them being flops?
ReplyDeletefifa says his sprint is 55
ReplyDeleteWhat the football console game?
ReplyDeleteAnd you point?
ReplyDeleteMarkovic should be back in training by next week. Lallana's out for another month...?
ReplyDeleteThat's just nonsense
ReplyDeleteYes, he'll be here Sunday.
ReplyDeleteI was going to give you an up vote but someone beat me to it
ReplyDeleteGrobbelaar was right !
ReplyDeleteAs Brendan would probably say "there is no " I" in team"
ReplyDeleteill be honest ive seen opta stats which said andy Carroll was Liverpools fastest player and one of the fastest in the prem...i hope he is fast but from what ive saw hes not ..he may well shift when he gets a full head of steam but football is usually in short bursts of between 10 -30 m if he only gets going at the 60m mark its an irrelevant stat
ReplyDelete...but there is an 'i' in 'meat pie'...
ReplyDeletemaybe we should sign ron vlarr at fb
ReplyDeleteTrue, Probably several
ReplyDeleteLovren is as quick as Neymar.
ReplyDeleteBasstunedtored, AKA Andrew Beasley knows his stuff. He has even featured on the offcial LFC website and Anfield Index etc.
He would not be posting irrelevant stuff on his website.
Carroll was the fastest in the prem to give up and collapse on the pitch. That must count for something.
ReplyDeletelike ive said as a defender is how quick he is over 30m ...good defenders hit a fast speed over a short space to close the gap its not a relay race if usain bolt only starts picking up pace at 40m hes no use in a defense where a forward although not as fast can cover 20 yards from the halfway live very fast. Its like saying a footballer who can lift a lot of weight is strong on the pitch there isnt always a cross over.
ReplyDeletewhere is blind or moreno on this list thats what we should be asking
ReplyDeleteI don't think we should sign Blind. Absolutely nobody was suggesting this guy before the World Cup and Jaimie you've written plenty of articles condemning knee-jerk, big money signings on the back of one good tournament and rightly so.
ReplyDeleteIf we'd bid for him a year ago, the price would of been half what it is now and that would probably be about what he's worth.
At the price quoted in the article, we can immediately forget about any resale value which the club don't like. He's a decent player by all accounts but he's not going to take us up a level in my opinion.
Moreno, while he may not be the finished article yet, has the potential to be a cutting edge left back for us for years and has definite resale value should we decide to sell
Good point it's as well we didn't fall for that Origi chappie either
ReplyDeleteill be honest after reading about moreno so much ill be disappointed if we dont sign him.
ReplyDeleteAt least he was reasonably prices
ReplyDeleteI am glad we signed him really:-)
ReplyDeleteplease wake uppppp.....are u still dreamed...i want tooo...i want the best LB and the best CF in the world at present noww...sadly,its just a dream...wake uppp man...thats not easy as we thinks...
ReplyDeleteBut there is a "me" in team
ReplyDeleteDani Alves? the man way below decline. He thinks he is the smartest around. Unfortunately this is the EPL where he will be outdone in all respects. Waste of money. Go for the young American International. That will be money well spent and certainly good returns
ReplyDeleteMoreno will come after the super cup apparently but your other signings just arent all going to happen i dont think the money is there for them, especially the wages.
ReplyDeleteThe thing that surprises me is, when we used to finish 6th-7th, the analysis and comments in Liverpool-related forums were much more sanguine and mature. Now, all you get is FIFA 14 and Football Manager nerds shouting hoarse at what FSG, BR and the lot should be or shouldn't be doing. It pretty depressing considering the great progress being achieved....sigh.
ReplyDeletethese things are all well and good but BR doesn't have a magic wand also why is it a waste of money for Lallana/ can we well play 60 games plus this season which means we need a bigger team try looking at the big picture, next year when its only a case of needing 1 or 2 players then maybe you'll have a point but now you and the rest of the idiots need to shut up and get behind the team that is improving almost daily
ReplyDeletePeople need to calm down, we still have plenty of time to sign a striker so after we bring in Moreno which i think will be next week, i also think that Brendan and co have already started talks with a club over the signing of a decent striker, we might not get a Cavani or a Falcao but i think we will get somebody, who will be good enough to fill in for Sturidge if injured, or even partner him maybe, we just need to give it a bit more time before we start hyperventilating, and start name calling of the Manager or owners of our club. I personally think all will be fine this season we may not yet again win the League, but i`m sure we will be in contention again this season, so if we make it into the Champions league again, for the following season that in my eyes will be good enough for me for now.
ReplyDeleteWe need to give our scouts some credit, yes there are other lb's we could have gone for, but we just won't give up on Moreno, and after Tuesday we will get him. My main issue is the striker, we def need another top striker. Who I have no idea, I would like falcao, but he a massive risk, and cavani just didn't look the same without Suarez so no for me there. After that your probably looking at your young strikers, when lukaku goes for £28 mil when he only scored 7 prem goals last year, I have no idea what a good striker will cost, it's all risk, but Liverpool have a superb track record of finding players that score, for cheap, so here's hoping they find another one
ReplyDeleteNot everyone wants to come to LFC most prefer big wages in the bright lights of London. BR is building not only a team but our credibility to be called a football elite again, some of us are still living off past glories without realising where we have been for several years out the top four and out the CL.
ReplyDeleteAnd as a manager Brendon can be and is stronger than them, that wouldn't have been the case if Van Gal was here, or Comolli as you say...
ReplyDelete
