After his loan spell at Napoli, Pepe Reina is back at Liverpool, and with no realistic transfer prospects on the horizon, there's every possibility he could stay at Anfield next season. Despite this possibility, the Reds still appear to be actively seeking another goalkeeper, and long-time target Michel Vorm is back in the frame.
According to The Mirror this week:
"Michel Vorm’s £6m price tag has not put off [Brendan] Rodgers, and the Dutchman is likely to be heading to Merseyside this summer".
Vorm - nicknamed the 'penalty killer' - was linked with a move to Anfield last summer, and when asked about the possibility of a move to LFC, the Dutch stopper told Voetbal International:
"A reunion with [Brendan] Rodgers would be special. The collaboration was very good last season. My name is often mentioned in clubs, but I would only leave Swansea for one of the top clubs in England or abroad"
Liverpool legend Mark Lawrenson is a fan of Vorm, and in column for the Liverpool Daily Post last season, he noted:
"Michel Vorm is one player who could fit the bill [at Liverpool], but Rodgers will have to be careful going back and signing lots of Swansea players"
Vorm certainly has a lot or respect for Liverpool. After Swansea's 5-0 drubbing by the Reds in 2012-13, he described playing at Anfield as a 'privilege', and hailed the club's 'amazing supporters'.
Vorm - Recently described by Rodgers as 'terrific' - sounds like just the kind of strong character needed at Anfield, and from what I've seen, he's a lot more vocal than Mignolet on the pitch. When he's not injured, Vorm plays every game for Swansea, but I doubt he'd move to Liverpool without some assurance of regular first-team football.
It all depends on Rodgers' intentions: If the idea is to get someone in solely to push Mignolet to improve, then Vorm is better off staying at Swansea. Just look at Brad Jones - his job is to provide competition, yet he didn't make a single appearance in the league all season.
Conversely, if there's a genuine opportunity to replace Mignolet, with Rodgers willing to bench the Belgian if Vorm performs well, then a move to Liverpool is clearly a good career move.
It all depends on Reina, though. If he stays next season, it will make no sense to sign another goalkeeper. It's hard enough to keep two top-class goalkeepers happy; sharing the load amongst three senior 'keepers is arguably impossible.

We are hell-bent on doing a Spurs and we will succeed. Buy average players and sell them for below average price or send them on loan next season so that their price plummet down. The Liverpool way!
ReplyDeleteOh God no...
ReplyDeleteSo our interest in Bony gets leaked and Swansea get a bit upset. We then bid for Davies and it gets knocked back. Will we now bid for Vorm and further enrage Huw? It's like we've decided to pick on Southampton and Swansea to take their best players, they must hate us.
ReplyDeleteI agree, Vorm is a good target at a good price. He should genuinely push Mignolet for a starting spot, otherwise I also agree that there is not much point. I also agree that this all depends on what happens to Reina. I'd love to see two quality keepers at Liverpool next season, both with equal chance of starting and both getting regular games across all competitions. If that's Vorm + Mignolet or Reina + Mignolet I'd be happy.
Phew! Agreeing with JK three times in one article? This is too much.
oh Christ! BR should just sign all his family members! should he sign erbody he knows and work with....he was almost in a biding for sigudsson see how useless that player is.....SMH! where are the world class players he promised !
ReplyDeleteplease don't be fooled when rodgers describes someone as terrific , magical, outstanding , great..........cos am pretty sure he has used it generously for toure and aspas ...am beginning to wonder what he means by that now.
ReplyDelete"After Origi, Reds chase Belgium starlet Bakkali
ReplyDeleteLiverpool lead Tottenham in race for £6.3m Eridivisie wonderkid."
tottenham lead liverpool in race, liverpool miles ahead in race to sign, tottenham catch up with liverpool in race to sign!......whats this cat and mouse game liverpool plays with average teams.hurrr!!!
Safe to say we all want Reus . You don't think that Brendan Rodgers can control balotelli at 14.5mil Or Cavanni who wants out.
ReplyDeleteI really cant understand after these players why we are not signing left and right back and class players at that . Defence isn't to buy Budget average players . I cant understand loaning aspas to saville and not getting Moreno first ??? wasn't Ian Ayre there
does rooney comb his bumfluff ?
ReplyDeletepiss off you United W&4%K
ReplyDeleteDeal him please
Delete
ReplyDeleteThen it ends with Chelsea sign wonderkid from under the noses of spurs and Liverpool!
ReplyDeleteI don't think theirs a danger of us doing 'a Spurs'...firstly because we were not nearly as dependent on him as they were on Bale.. I think he scored 65% of their goals or something stupid..Suarez only 30% of ours with the % difference in assists also comparable. More importantly though all the players Spurs signed had moved here from abroad, and all had to acclimatise at once.....I feel it was as much to do with that as the nu.bed of players signed. We have signed Lallana, Lambert and with Davies Lovren Bony potentially to come we will have the majority of the new signings used to the country and the league. We get those, already have Markovic and if we sign Shaquiri or Griezmann will be more than happy that we have the squad to challenge for the league again
ReplyDeleteUnfortunately it's not just the goals or assists it's the overall effect of having a player that puts the opposition on the back foot and creates space for others.
ReplyDeleteLet's hope some of the existing and new players can step up and create that kind of presence on the pitch
I agree Reus is a good player but at £40m, would rather have Shaquiri/Griezmann for £20m. Bayern stated that Shaquiri not for sale as important for their future but was hasn't been reported widely is that the player tweeted "I live in the present, not the future." Sound like a hint???
ReplyDeleteGo and have lie down:-)
ReplyDeleteI don't think BR will worry about keeping Reina happy but presentationally he might have difficulty with three top goalkeepers at the club. But I still expect Reina to go.
Personally, I would rather have one outstanding goalkeeper than two or even three (cheaper) very good ones. But they are hard to find or develop.
lol
ReplyDeleteWhat wrong with Jones and Reina?
ReplyDeleteThey hardly get injured anyway...
ReplyDeleteYou can use edit to delete your own post if you feel you want to
ReplyDeleteDelete
ReplyDeleteJaimie, what are your thoughts on Real Madrid signing Toni Kroos for £24m? A World Cup winner, 24 years old and a midfield dynamo. When we've just spent £25m on a 26y/o Adam Llalana?
ReplyDeleteHow many penalties did Suarez won? How many times he disposed some one which lead to a goal or the numerous fouls on Suarez resulting in goal? Suarez worked twice as hard as Bale. We will get found out this season. The sigings are baffling me.
ReplyDeletelook at Glen Johnson anobody at liverpool
ReplyDeleteAfter touring Melwood, did they not say a decision would be two weeks away? Has it been two weeks yet?
ReplyDeleteWho said a decision would be 'two weeks away'? The media? No human being said that. Girard is Lille's manager - I think his view carries more weight than media speculation.
ReplyDeleteMaybe this could be a play on words, were we not looking at offering him back to the club for this year and therefore the state is correct that "Origi will be here THIS season".
ReplyDeleteThis deal doesn't bother me either way. If it happens, I don't think £10 mil for a 19 yrold internation is too bad. If it doesn't, I don't think we will be missing out on too much.
ReplyDeleteAnyone watch the game last night?
Ibe looked pretty decent, as did Coutinho, apart from that, pretty much your run of the mill pre season friendly.
I think Ibe could start to get a look in this season.
sounds to me as if the deal is definitely on. liverpool wanted to loan him back anyways, so this statement rather confirms a deal with liverpool
ReplyDeleteThe news with are my has been going on for ages. Yet there is no movement from Liverpool for him. Bad indecisiveness from management?
ReplyDeleteThe news with Remy has been going on for ages. Yet there is no movement from Liverpool for him. Bad indecisiveness from management?
ReplyDeleteHere's the quote from Origi I read; in retrospect it doesn't appear he committed to a fixed deadline on his decision.
ReplyDeleteOrigi was non-committal on his future when asked during an event in his home town of Houthalen-Helchteren staged to recognise his performances in Brazil.
"I myself am still thinking about it," he told reporters.
"It is true that there are offers from all over Europe. Now I have to look carefully where I will grow as a player and as a person.
"I think things will be clearer within two weeks at the most."
Since Origi was at Melwood, there is evidence that LFC are interested, but the loan thing is just press speculation.
ReplyDeleteI read somewhere that the issue LFC has with Remy is that he still has a lot of immaturity in his game, which at 27 is a bit worrying, but who knows.
ReplyDeleteNervous about the season ahead, this will show if Bredan Rodgers is the real deal. It will be a big task to replace Luis' influance, not only goals / assists / penalties won etc. He's name on the team sheets lifts everyone (Uruguay in World Cup great example). We need to sign player / s who will have the same influence, a "marque" signing I suppose. This will sound like Football Manager fantacy but we should throw the cheque book at Dortmund for REUS & HUMMELS if they'd be willing to join. Worried about Glen / Lucas - just not good enough anymore, need replacement at left back also and definitely another Striker. Studge will miss matches due to injury and Lambert can't be only back-up. Agree re Remy, but what about Lukaku. The guy is a beast, proven premier league goalscorer and we'll take him of a rival - and still only 21!
ReplyDeleteI think LFC is looking at Remy's age (27) and want to recruit a starlet for the future instead.
ReplyDeleteThat's how I read it, Donk. If we *are* buying him and loaning him back to Lille, no lie was told. He *will* be at Lille this season.
ReplyDeleteYes, that's how I read the reports.
ReplyDeleteI agree , go and sign Remy at £8.5m he is ready to play now and is a real threat. No risk at that price given we will not know how Lallana and Markovic, plus can combined fees of £55m will settle. REmy has PL experience and is French International also . Cant be bad. Stop messing about and get him signed Liverpool!
ReplyDeleteKroos was in the last year of his contract, which is why the fee was so low, he was determined to leave Bayern, and there's no way he was going anywhere but up, as he's rightly regarded as one of the best midfielders in the world. So Barca or Real. That was his only choice. Same for Rakitic.
ReplyDeleteThere's no way, just no way, we can sign such players. Don't take it personally. We have to do things differently, just like we always have done, developing our own players and bringing in players from our own league or who are not yet regarded as world stars. So it goes.
Bony not fancied? He looks very good to me.
ReplyDeleteAm much happier now that BR seems to have switched his interest back to Bony who proved himself in the EPL with Swansea. He seems to be a strong, durable centre forward who would be ideal for the No9 jersey With Lovern and a strong left back we should be ready to go. Pity we weren't able to snare Mascherano as a solid midfield stopper. Should be an interesting season ahead for all reds supporters. Oh I nearly forgot to say Pepe Reina would have been a tremendous insurance for CL fixtures.
ReplyDeleteTo be honest, I would just throw 20Mil at Lukaku if we are really after a striker. Ticks all the boxes for me. If not, stick with Borini and forget about medium buys like Origi.
ReplyDeleteWith Lallana and Markovic now at the club, there is less room for Borini out wide. So unless Borini is being moved on by Rodgers, I don't see why he shouldn't be a 2nd/3rd choice striker?
If a potential signing in this area isn't better or at least on par with Sturridge, it's a total waste of time and money.
Things are clearly muddled.
ReplyDeleteI don't think Rodgers is in the slightest bit worried about whether Reina's happy or not, hopefully his situation can be resolved sooner rather than later. I think Vorm would be proper competition for Migs, unlike Jones who isn't providing competition for anyone, all due respect to the lad. Vorm's strengths - distribution, organisation and general control of his penalty area are all things migs badly needs to work on so perhaps working alongside someone with more experience.
ReplyDeleteVorm knows Brendan very well so I'm sure they'll have a good chat before any transfer so there will be no crossing of wires on what his role at the club will be. If he simply is back up to migs, then it'll be the first time we've had a decent back up keeper since... Someone help me out here?
Tony Barrat said he thought the deal was near but done and he would be loaned back. Like you have said yourself he is one of the more trustworthy Journos and has connections at the club.
ReplyDeleteI doubt £20m would be enough for US to get Lukaku.
ReplyDeleteOne thing we'll have in abundance next season is pace. I expect to see some blistering counter attacks this year
ReplyDeleteI think that's how everyone I know interpreted the situation, but people wanting to make a mole hill look bigger took this veiw.
ReplyDeleteI can only imagine want JK's veiws are on Shaqiri's quote of 'I don't live in the future, I live in the now'? Headline will read;
'Government Agents Confiscate Shaqiri's Time Machine'
;)
This is article is also nothing but wild speculation and lazy journalism Lille's sponsors went on record at the height of the transfer speculation as saying they are 99% certain that Origi will be playing at Lille next season, this was widely believed because any suitor would need to loan him back to the French club for a season as part of any deal. There is thus no new information here, and if he signs for Liverpool or not I'd bet my mortgage Lille won't own his registration next season. Also "Remy instead" is a terrible shout out as one is a 19 year old work in progress, the other a 27 year old at the peak of his game, and that is before we even consider the wages difference, what do you think 3 - 4 times different?
ReplyDeleteWhen I saw that he was going to take some time on his decision, I thought that he's just a young player with some good people in his corner.
ReplyDeleteIf anything I would expect LFC not to hound the kid knowing he's being subjected to an explosion of interest. Also seeing how LFC are approaching deals these days, they may have a long courting process in mind with a view to moulding the kid for the big time.
Borini's needs to go, he'll struggle to get 12 goals a season. He's good at pressing the opposition and the occasional good goal, he won't be a penalty take here. His body position when recieveing the ball on a half turn is so bad, he can't manoeuver the defender out the way Luis like did to half the effect .Luis use to leave defenders on the deck when he got the ball on the turn, barge them to the floor, even people that tower above him.
ReplyDeleteMight be enough to make him think about leaving though.
ReplyDeleteHe might just start to think "Well if Chelsea don't want me, at least another top club does." and then start to work on a move away?
I think there was talk of him being sent on loan again? could be wrong though...
Quite possibly. I know that QPR were generally paying through the nose and the much quoted "higher wage bill than Dortmund" is also true so it wouldn't surprise me. On top of that that first year of his contract his wages would probably be payed by Lille as well. Take that in to consideration and we are talking quite a few million difference over the course of a four year (the most Remy would get) contract.
ReplyDeleteLukaku should force a move because he is behind new boy Costa and a poor performing Torres. Chelsea would probably have some antipathy towards us but if other clubs bid in that price region, I can't see why we can't snatch him. I think he would welcome a move to Liverpool. It's better than being 3rd choice or going on loan again. LFC would just have to show ambition to get it done.
ReplyDeleteYet another example of our uninspiring transfer business so far. Am really disappointed and not really looking forward to next season at all. Maybe things will change but I doubt it. Even if we signed Bony which doesn't look to be the case it wouldn't help me see things in a different light. Rodgers is wasting money on AVERAGE players. Lallana is average 15mill Max. Can is a nobody and let's be real here he is. Markovic unproven and not prolific enough so again average till he proves otherwise. Don't even get me started on the 32 year old! We still havent bought a DM CB AND LB areas we really need strengthening on. We can't convince a 23 year old nobody in Moreno to come to us even WITH champions league football. I have zero confidence in Ayre and Rodgers when it comes to transfers.
ReplyDeleteRant over.
Is banter forbidden in this room? My post got deleted
ReplyDeleteYou have a bit of sky on you... ;-)
ReplyDeleteThere are a few teams after him though no? Aren't Atleti supposed to be interested? Although that may have gone now they have Mandzukic. I am sure there are big teams all over the continent that are interested and he will be fully aware of it. What we get via the media is a small part of the picture padded out with nonsense. If Chelsea want to loan him again then perhaps they are not convinced about selling him yet. He is still quite young.
ReplyDeleteI'm sure there are a few teams interested. If I were Chelsea though, I would be playing him. He is good, and has the ability to be great.
ReplyDeleteI would love to see him at Liverpool.
It's just simply not that easy. To quote Tony Barratt again he said that Chelsea are reluctant to do any dealings with us at the moment as they feel they had their fingers burned with Sturridge. If another teams offers an acceptable amount then we would have to offer more. The first acceptable offer would be more than £20m or that at a minimum. So like I say for US £20m would not be enough.
ReplyDeleteIs Can not the DM option? Does it mean nothing that managers, players and sports writers all had Lallana in their top ten players of last year? Or the goals and assists of him and Lambert last year?
ReplyDeleteI would love him too and considering how bad their strikers were last year I can't see why Lukaku doesn't get more of a go (well I have a theory). I just don't see us getting him.
ReplyDeleteAll his manager said was that he'll be at Lille next season. It's been widely reported that he'll be sent back to Lille on loan as part of the deal so I think it's slightly premature to be reporting that the deal has collapsed
ReplyDeleteThat's fair enough. I've only mentioned Lukaku because I think he is a realistic target who satisfies our criteria. You could swap Lukaku out for anyone else of equal or greater ability, but the point remains, get someone equal to or better than Sturridge or we waste our time.
ReplyDeleteThe issue you refer to probably dates back before we signed Sturridge. Nobody forced Chelsea to sign our players like Benayoun, Miereles or Torres. It's also not our fault that they buy big rep players only and give little to no opportunity to youngsters. Somebody believed in Sturridge and that was AVB but he was sacked. Rodgers believes in Sturridge and look at him now.
Chelsea are just being bitter. They signed an overpaid pansy (Eto'o) and farmed Lukaku out on loan. Give us Lukaku and we will show you how to use a player properly.
Also, Lukaku should force a move in general. Doesn't have to specifically leave for us. I was generally speaking. :)
ReplyDeleteNot to mention Torres.
ReplyDeleteI agree on the Lukaku sentiment but (I know it's only one seasons but...) is Bony around that quality? Lukaku certainly has age on his side and could easily improve further but as of this moment I don't think there is all that much between the players.
I think so too and would prefer if it was us but like I say I.....
ReplyDeleteYou may not buy the "for the future" argument but clearly Rodgers does. Ever since he's been here he's spent money on players with potential. Markovic is the latest example, paid a hefty fee for him too. I don't think this practice is going to change so to be honest I don't really know why you write articles like this. Yes, Remy is a striker of some quality and maybe he could contribute at Liverpool but have the club shown the slightest interest in him? No. I think that's because he's essentially at his peak right now. He's as good as he's ever going to get and if certain aspects of his game don't suit Liverpool now then they never will. He's a marginally decent striker but I really don't see him being quite good enough for what we're trying to achieve. He's not at the same level as Sturridge and he's about 25% the player that Suarez was for us. The idea with Origi is to buy him now in the hope that he'll end up being a player far better than Remy could ever be, a player of the standard that we need to challenge at the very peak of club football in Europe. Of course there is a chance that won't work out but we'll never be a club to regularly fork out the megabucks for the big name signings. We'll never spend 75 million pounds on someone like Suarez. The best we can hope to do is sign these players where they are on the fringe of showing their potential and then do everything we can to get them to that level.
ReplyDeleteRemy has more goals per minute than Bony.
ReplyDeleteAny chance of a link there captain?
ReplyDeleteI don't believe in good people.
ReplyDeleteDavid said he is happier now because we are linked with Bony. I personally prefer Remy. As he has more minutes per goal and play wide too
ReplyDeleteI meant a link to that info bud. The minutes per goal stat. Or just what site I can see it. Always up for the stats me.
ReplyDeleteprobably squawka
ReplyDeleteDo u think Lukaku will start for Liverpool. He will be second choice. And the type of character he is he may resort to controversial comments against LFC in press. Moreover he doesnt work hard enough.
ReplyDeleteI would prefer a young player with good mentality and ability like Lacazette or Bakkali. Remy can be a good signing too
I guess it's just personal preference. I don't rate Bony and he wouldn't get into my lineup. Would you move Sturridge wide just for Bony? I wouldn't, and we have Lambert to cover so a new signing needs to be a guaranteed starter. In a way, Lambert is similar to Bony, so IMO Bony is quite needless.
ReplyDeleteLukaku is in the Drogba/Ibrahimovic mould and he worked well under Roberto Martinez, which is more evidence to me that he'd be a good deal. I think that type of physicality and technique is unique.
sry i dont have it at the moment.
ReplyDeleteSo that would just be prem games then? Not all comps? Because it's worth thinking about, is it better over all?
ReplyDeleteNot really asking you directly. Unless you have the answers ;-p
ReplyDeleteLukaku is just an example. IMO he has a better chance of starting than any other striker we have been linked to this window.
ReplyDeleteLacazette, Bakkali (he's a wider player) and Remy would be squad options IMO, and we already have those in Lambert and Borini.
The only answer I know is 42.
ReplyDeleteWas just taking a guess as to the source. Sorry, mate.
Borini is just so so bad. I cant wait to see him leave LFC. Lambert i think will never start a game and always come on as a sub.
ReplyDeleteThat's fair enough.
ReplyDeleteWell you have the answer to the ultimate question of life, the universe and everything so don't worry about it mate.
ReplyDeleteI really don't understand all the love for Lukaku amongst LFC fans. Again, if he joins us, where would he play ? Is he better than Sturridge ?
ReplyDeletethought that would suffice.
ReplyDeleteWhere did you get Moreno 'doesnt want to come to us' it is the transfer cost not personal terms or players desire to come to LFC that is the issue.
ReplyDeleteCan is the extra option for DM.
CB is more than likey going to be Lovren or it not there will be another signing.
LB we are in the market as you know looking at Moreno, or is he too average for you?
If you are not looking forward to next season you really dont like football, i cannot wait. Bring it on.
Just had a look at the premier league site and they have Remy on 0.54 goals a game and Bony on 0.47. Which is all well and good (even though he has goals in other comps but this is easier to work with) but Remy has a smaller sample size. Unfortunately for arguments sake that may skew things slightly as it can indicate more or less than it could due to the comparisons not being the same. He could have a worse or even better goals per game ratio if he had played as many as Bony. Truth is as comparisons go it can only really give an indicator rather than mean anything properly. To be able to compare properly we would need the same amount of minutes on the pitch for both players.
ReplyDeleteAll that aside I would welcome either player. Having said that we do already have payers with Remy's qualities but few with Bony's. If that is worth taking in to consideration.
B Rodgers needs to ship out these defensive frailties this summer : Bring in sales of 15-20M AND Replace them with more class and quality:
ReplyDeleteGK: B Jones (32) GK: P Reina (31) for 5-8M Combined
Replacement: M Vorm(30) Of swansea for 4-6M
RB: M Kelly(23) RB: G Johnson(29) for 5-8M combined
Replacement: S Aurier(21) Of Toulouse for 7-9M
CB: S Coates(23) CB: K Toure(33) for 4-5 combined
Replacement: D Lovren(24) Of Southampton for 17-21M
DM: L Leiva(27) to Napoli for 12-14M
Replacement: E Banega(25) Of Valencia for 6-8M
And B Rodgers should bring in B Davies(21) Of Swansea for 8-11M to compete and cover J Enrique(27)
