'He's fantastic, but...' - BR reveals why LFC failed to sign £35m Alexis Sanchez

Liverpool's failure to sign Barcelona star Alexis Sanchez is arguably one of biggest transfer disappointments in years. For a few brief, exquisite moments, it seemed like the deal might happen, but the dream last week when the Chilean maestro secured a £35m move to Arsenal. Sanchez would've been a perfect replacement for Luis Suarez, but it wasn't meant to be, and Reds boss Brendan Rodgers has now explained exactly why the deal fell through.

Speaking to reporters on Thursday, Rodgers dismissed the accusation that Liverpool 'struggles' to attract top-class players, and outlined the reason why Sanchez rejected LFC. He explained:

“Sanchez was one where geography dictated where he wanted to go, simple as that. It wasn’t a lack of ambition. The player and his family simply wanted to choose to live where they did. He’s a fantastic player...but it was not to be”

Most fans already suspected that Liverpool lost out to the lure of London, but there you have it, straight from horse's mouth. It's massively disappointing, but it's the unfortunate reality of the situation.

Sanchez's decision is totally understandable, though, and it's hard to begrudge his choice. London is widely regarded as one of the world's greatest cities, and for the super-rich - like Sanchez - it really is a bit of a wonderland.

Unfortunately, Liverpool's historical prestige is not strong enough to attract the world's biggest players, and to be honest, it never has been. LFC may be the UK's most successful club, but that is clearly not an attraction for the game's elite.

Indeed, Alonso, Torres, and Suarez aside (all three of whom were not World stars prior to joining Liverpool), there are very few (if any) elite, world-class signings in LFC's transfer history.

This is the reality, and it continues to this day. As such, Liverpool fans simply have to accept it, and prepare themselves for a raft of similar disappointments in the future.

  1. agree that LFC's prestige doesnt bring players in anymore., but if it was purely geography that he based his choice on, then i'd question his choice all day. i feel that the project that we have going on, along with the football we play should be enough reason to choose us. london is 4 hours away ffs

  2. I am trying hard to understand what you are trying to say? In your last two paragraph are you saying LFC can't attract super stars or what? You have to make it clear. Suarez was well known before he came to LFC

    ReplyDelete
  3. What I've stated is perfectly clear, and requires no further explanation.

    ReplyDelete
  4. Suarez at Ajax? Well known, yes, world star? no.

    ReplyDelete
  5. Can't question his choice, right or wrong. Arsenal's "project" isnt any worse (or better) than liverpools.

    ReplyDelete
  6. not about whether its better or not, its about it being a right fit for him. while there is no certainty, i feel rodgers and the system we play would suit sanchez's style of play better.

  7. I must say that the contunued negative tone in practically all articles posted on Liverpool-Kop is really starting to bother me.

  8. Well even tho we have secured CL we still cannot attract world class players, it's the reality, not a pretty one nut tru nonetheless.

    ReplyDelete
  9. It's not from the horse's mouth though, is it? Sanchez, the horse, declared in an interview with Arsenal TV, that Wenger and Arsenal as a club and team was the reason.

Rodgers, the moron, is just trying to save face.

    ReplyDelete
  10. So basically you are stating LFC can't attract big signers .Same goes to Man United also. None of their legends were world beaters until they got their. RVP maybe! The players that transfer from LFC and Man U to other clubs( mostly Madrid n Barca) goes as super stars!

    ReplyDelete
  11. Liverpool paid record fees in the past for players but they tended to be British . My memory might be playing tricks on me but it seems to me that generally British clubs did not sign top foreign players until the influx of cash rich owners at Chelsea and City. However, It is now difficult for other clubs in the EPL to compete with the big spenders which makes it all the more disappointing when we fail for the odd target we do go for.

It may well be that Sanchez chose Arsenal because of London or it may have only been one reason among others. It is the explanation that suits LFC as it does not raise questions about other aspects such as wages, wage structure or transfer fees. For now though it does seem to be the likely and consistent explanation coming out from all sides .

It is a shame because the evidence is that can buy the already developed best players do best ans more generally that is the clubs with most money

    ReplyDelete
  12. But if Sanchez chose London over LFC and it had nothing to do with Ayre being a tw*t or no ambition from the club then why do some fans freak out when players like Kroos etc are not linked with us? Kroos clearly wanted to go to Madrid!

Fact of the matter is that it is not just as simple as making up a list of your own players, guessing their transfer fees and then questioning LFC why those players have not been chased, signed or shown interest in. I look at it as reality vs Football manager.

  13. This is my 2 cents worth view. He doesnt wants to go to Liverpool because that will look like he has to give up his place in Barcelona for Suarez's arrival. Ego is more like it and to save face he has choosen Arsenal instead! .......YNWA!

    ReplyDelete
  14. He has his priorities and if his family would prefer to be in London then that's where he should be. His gf is a designer and artist so London would be a great opportunity for her. She'll probably jet back and forth between the two cities. Some people put football first, other people have other priorities and of course it's up to him to do what he's happiest with. It's not like he's gone to play with QPR, Arsenal are a very big, successful club with plenty to offer, not just the address. I'd say it was a close call on this one but if it came down to London vs Liverpool as a place to live I know what I'd choose.

What's good to see is that Liverpool are still chasing quality players and those quality players are giving us due consideration. Sure, we've missed out on a few over recent years but we're still aiming high. I think the club have a top class target still in mind, we just haven't heard about him yet. There will be another big signing for the club this summer and we should expect it to be someone of the class of Sanchez.

    ReplyDelete
  15. No we could not attract Sanchez who wanted to move to London, who else have we bid for the club has accepted the bid but the player has said no? Or preferred another club since we have been back in the CL? Names on the back of a postcard.

Or because Liverpool only made it into the Champions league because they played 42 games in all competitions...and realised that they'll probably do a Spurs and buy rubbish with the money? Just my two cents ;-)

maybe he has his priorities straight by going for a team who've qualified for the champions league non-stop..and noting that the likes of Ozil and Ramsey are better than henderson and an aging Gerrard? Thoughts?

  21. You can't underestimate the draw that London has - It's international transport links and options for housing, as well as it's renowned cosmopolitan nature. Add to that the vastness of the city with it's multitude of things for his family to occupy themselves and it's clearly likely to be more appealing, perhaps particularly to a South-American footballer and his family. If I'm being totally honest with myself, maybe Arsenal's 17 consecutive Champion's League qualifications may have had something to do with it too.

  23. If its that easy to win the league or challenge for the league with CL football why doesnt Mr Wenger just play the youth in the CL (as not like he will ever win it) and then you will walk to the league title by your reckoning.

  25. That would be difficult considering the geographic differences in location and the fact that neither actually has the ability to defecate as they are cities and not biological entities.

    ReplyDelete
  26. We're from 'down under', of course we're able to s*** on London.

    ReplyDelete
  27. To be honest there is so many cities better than London worldwide and a lot in Europe only many of these cities do not have clubs with money and prestige.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Manchester United proves that geography isn't the be-all and end-all. I know we're not what Man Utd were, but it proves that players can still be willing to prioritise their career ahead of their geographical location

I must confess I've never been to Liverpool myself (but to London for a few short visits). There's this thing about cities, where some are great places to live, and some a great places to visit. London for me has always been one of the great places to visit, because when you are there you have time (and provided you have the $$$ also) to enjoy it, whereas just plain living and working there even makes me start to walk faster.

I've always had this impression Liverpool is one where which is great to live in, where there is some balance to life and you can get more space for what you earn. I would like to hear from some of you lads who live in Liverpool! Thoughts?

    ReplyDelete
  33. Even by your flawed logic being 'under' would also not allow you to defecate on 'London', you would surely need to be over to commit the heinous act.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Yeah its the talking part that counts after all isn't it Mr Wenger ;)

    ReplyDelete
  35. ha ha sydney shit all over london why is that because of the weather? that is the only thing its got going for it ha ha i bet that came from an aussie who doesn't even live in sydney.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Your idea is upside down we are on top of the world here lol.

    ReplyDelete
  37. I've said before that Arsenal are clearly the better team considering their results over the past 5-20 years. In terms of a sure bet for being the CL and pushing for domestic honours then I think Arsenal would be less of a risk that Liverpool. If you want to play for a team that will compete and be in the mix then go to Arsenal. Plenty of one-eyed Liverpool fans will reject that idea but it's obviously the case. Rodgers is going to have to produce a few more seasons of top-4 finishes and good European results before we can consider Liverpool a better team than Arsenal.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Everyone hates Sydney. Plus there are at least 250,000 Aussies in London at any given point in time. I'd live in London over Sydney most days of the week but I'd not spend more than 6 months at a time in either city. I like trees and open spaces and stuff like that.

    ReplyDelete
  39. We have a very sophisticated artillery program which launches feces missiles, which have unlimited range.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Present that counts now with regards cl..there is not much between our clubs and to be honest if United get their act together can see you guys being the unfortunate ones to miss out on top four (think utd will miss out again though). You were really sweating towards end of season when everton nearly pipped you. Good signing for you Sanchez but I think you lack steel in middle of park. Gerard can still put his foot in and hendo's a worker with good energy levels plus we have Can in the mix too now. These kinds of players are needed to supplement the attacking/flair players, think we have a nice balance and just need a big name to add in.

    ReplyDelete
  41. I sure do live in Sydney. Better weather opens up more options.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Depends on how much money you have i would rather live in Sydneys poorer areas than Londons and if you have money life around the harbour is to die for.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Again logic is failing we all know Australia do not have a sophisticated military, Brazil have a better setup ;)

    ReplyDelete
  44. In Liverpool you get to play a game called "spot someone not wearing a tracksuit". It's requires great focus and perseverance and can be very rewarding. Plus when you park near Anfield for games you can get local kids volunteering to "look after your car for you". There's also a train station, at which you can catch trains.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Yeah like sitting indoors typing smack on a Liverpool Football Club blogging site :)

    ReplyDelete
  46. To be fair you are getting overly-defensive...

    ReplyDelete
  47. Not anymore, they spent it all on the world cup.

    ReplyDelete
  48. The obvious negative stereotyping. I personally think Liverpool is a nice city and people in general are more friendly. Also if you take time to venture out to the surrounding areas there is a lot of nice places to live and see. Went Southport area when I was younger and thought it was nice.

    ReplyDelete
  49. If I was filthy rich I'd have a place by the beach which would make it pretty good. But then I'd also have a massive house in Kensington, and I'd always refer to it as Kensington because I don't like to say the word "Chelsea" if I can help it. I suppose if that was the case I'd be happy to spend a bit of time in both. Maybe.

    ReplyDelete
  50. No staright from the horses mouth would be Sanchez saying I chose AFC for London and London only. The horse is Sanchez, BR is a handler with a vested interest to make his club look good.

    ReplyDelete
  51. Sydney's rich areas are more appealing than London's. I'd prefer huge waterfront mansions with a boat waiting for me down on the jetty to a big apartment in a crammed street every day of the week. Rich people in London need to go overseas to enjoy the same high life that rich Sydneysiders enjoy.

    ReplyDelete
  52. To be honest Adam i grew up in Sydney but i hate all cities i like the country much better now the life is more relaxed and people are more down to earth.

    ReplyDelete
  53. Guys they are both good cities it depends personally what you are looking for. I live in Dublin and have the wicklow mountains on my doorstep, the advantage we have here is being close to mainland Europe and its fabulous different cultures.

    ReplyDelete
  54. I take it Sydney is a dog?

    ReplyDelete
  55. I know, it was a light-hearted joke, I know London is a great city. I just obviously struck a nerve...

    ReplyDelete
  56. Sanchez more or less did state that...plus BR does not need to make us look good we are good.

    ReplyDelete
  57. I used to live in the Wicklow mountains and I had Dublin on my doorstep. I would suggest Dublin and Liverpool are remarkably similar. The tracksuit quota in Tallaght is quite severe and the kids are similarly cheeky/dangerous.

    ReplyDelete
  58. And yet there is no where you can go in Sydney to avoid Sydney-siders ...

    ReplyDelete
  59. The hell is wrong with Sydneysiders?

    ReplyDelete
  60. Well, kangaroos shit too...

    ReplyDelete
  61. ... asks the Sydneysider ...

  64. haha all countries/citys have their fair amount of s!*ts. I moved to here from London and prefer the way of life anyway. this is turning into a lonely planet guide

    ReplyDelete
  65. We just spent 10s of billions on U.S. aircraft they cant even get to work properly crappy but definitely sophisticated.

    ReplyDelete
  66. We're all about quality, not quantity...well so we thought.

    ReplyDelete
  67. I am sure the London issue did worked in AFC's favour but it would be crazy and slightly insulting to suggest that's the only reason. and of course BR wants to make out that it was purely demographic. He's just lost his star player and missed out on a hey World class target. He wants to stop the discussion that LFC can't attract top players. Which isn't and he's right to stop that narrative in the press. Hence the vested interest.

We're never going to 100% agree. But I find it annoying how many LFC ex employees and current employees feel they have to try and belittle AFC capture of a player.

    ReplyDelete
  68. Well that's 4 cents towards the transfer budget

    ReplyDelete
  69. Do you really think he has any more idea about Arsenal than Liverpool?

    ReplyDelete
  70. I'm not insulting Arsenal by saying it was the only factor but it was obvious from what he said that it was one of the main ones. They're a great club and have got a great player, sure br would agree with that. Plus we have similar attacking ways of playing the game, sure br and wenger have a mutual respect for each other. What would of been interesting is if Chelsea had rivaled them had they not forked out on Costa.

    ReplyDelete
  71. Yes there was the case of RVP being signed by UTD who were in a far better state trophy winning wise than Arsenal plus he got a 250k a week salary flashed in front of his face.

LFC have won very little compared to the other top 4 teams over the years (bar City) and financially we are not quite at the level of Arsenal, UTD, Chelsea or City.

For now that is how the cookie will crumble. Maybe once Anfield's capacity increases and we manage to add some trophies to our cabinet along then then our situation will improve.

    ReplyDelete
  72. It is like when LFC were after Willian. Spurs then agreed terms with him but at the last minute Chelsea decided they were going to sign him instead.

Not only did more money influence Willian's decision but also the location he would be living in.

    ReplyDelete
  73. The tracksuits show just what a fit and sporting population it has with kids who are aware of their civil responsibilities as little scampish ambassadors for the City - heartwarming.

Don't want to put a dampener on things but not sure the train thing is that unusual though tbh....

    ReplyDelete
  74. I honestly hope Sanchez does well...but not too well at the expense of us. Good to have class players in pl. Think we will def still have a blockbuster signing, there's quite a lot of spec from a lot of media sources now plus with what br been saying about the extra financial clout that Luis sale has bought in.

    ReplyDelete
  75. Think BR will start concentrating on our defence now.

    ReplyDelete
  76. We may find out if there is any truth behind the Sami Khedira rumours. I'll skulk back to my fan sites now but thank you for welcoming my views on this site.

    ReplyDelete
  77. That as well, particularly the lb area, if he does not sell either skrtel or agger think he might well stick. Think Sakho will improve and llori might stick around.

    ReplyDelete
  78. Oh yes you come on here stir things up and then leave when the fighting starts ...:-)

    ReplyDelete
  79. I reckon we will still get Lovren. He has pretty much been the only CB we have been linked with and if we were willing to pay our way for Lallana then who says we won't for Lovren.

    ReplyDelete
  80. We finished second last year! This is JK in a good mood. :-)

It's a bit 'lame' after all in this day and age, just how far is London from Liverpool to the 'super rich' footballers. After all Owen, whilst playing for Newcastle still lived in Cheshire, travelling to training via helicopter. It's not like a professional athlete is going to be rolling home drunk at 3 in the morning very often is it.

  83. Sanchez is a legend11:10 am, July 18, 2014

Well said Adam! Arsenal have the recent history + experience of playing YEAR IN YEAR OUT in the Chamions League. Will we ever win it? Nope....why? Cause Wenger has no tactical knowledge. Everyone knows how we'll play. Rodgers is the selling point for Liverpool....good young manager. But you'll need Top4 every season for at least 5/6 years if you're going to compete for the likes of Sanchez. That's simply a fact....

    ReplyDelete
  84. Yep that would be the most likely one but its then important that he decides his first choice back four in particular cb pairings and gets to work with them during pre season. If Lovren did sign i'd go Sakho and him, they'd be a good threat in oppo box as well. Nothing against Skrtel/Agger especially the former who chipped in with some goals last season, just think we need to look forward and establish a fresh pairing that hopefully become solid for years to come.

  85. westernbarbarian11:11 am, July 18, 2014

Unless of course you've lived in London, I know there's a bit of a northern bias in my view, but I find London a soulless place , guess it might be different for famous footballers, but its not a great place to live, the populace are to wrapped up in themselves and distrustful of everyone they don't know ( I know region stereotyping :-). ) but I hated living down there.

    ReplyDelete
  86. I agree but it is what it is and thats want his family wanted. He is playing for Arsenal though who are a great club...somehow don't think he would of gone West Ham or even Spurs had they somehow been in for him

    ReplyDelete
  87. westernbarbarian11:13 am, July 18, 2014

Adam, its LFC 'money ball' type policy to buy players on the cusp of becoming great, then if at some time in the future we sell, a LA Suarez, there is a profit to be made .

    ReplyDelete
  88. Sanchez is a legend11:15 am, July 18, 2014

Wenger's a shocking manager. I support the club, not the manager. Great coach...shite tactician. We should have won the CL by now, that's on him. BUT he has got us into the top 4 with having rubbish teams and a couple of good players (not suggesting that's not his fault btw)
Wow...clutching a bit eh? Never said it was easy...certainly easier though. Or are you denying that? 20 less games last season doesn't make a difference i guess?! That your opinion...one round earlier? Are you suggesting we go out in the first round? Please please tell me when we've gone out in the group stages....please....i beg you!!!

    ReplyDelete
  89. Yes I've always said what a rubbish manager he is as he has consistently produced good footballing sides and kept them in the CL forever despite relatively limited funds.

    ReplyDelete
  90. Also would go with Lovren/Sakho.

Obviously opinions will differ on the matter but IMO Sakho's passing from the back is almost to perfection and we are not talking about back passes plus his ability to read the game is another reason why he would make my starting eleven. Add Lovren and we will be boss at the back.

    ReplyDelete
  91. I from there...born, lived and worked there and know exactly what you mean, funnily enough quite a few people from there would agree with you about being wrapped in themselves. Now live in Dublin but funnily enough enjoy it more visiting back there with my family, but am happy when I come back to what I now call home.

    ReplyDelete
  92. They chose Sydney as the focal city in Finding Nemo, so that must mean it's spectacular

    ReplyDelete
  93. Agree having lived and worked in London but it is the myth that people go for not the reality

    ReplyDelete
  94. is that focal or faecal?

    ReplyDelete
  95. Historically we make world stars rather than buying them. Personally I have no problem with that, I actually like it :-)

    ReplyDelete
  96. Historically we used to win things too

    ReplyDelete
  97. Yep am desperate for Sakho to prove himself in pl because he has potential to be a beast of a player. No hiding place in pl though especially being in our back four...lets hope he has a good run of games/form. Second season for him to try and show the pl why deschamps rates him so highly in france set up.

    ReplyDelete
  98. I share the opinion with other posters on this site that Sakho actually had a decent first season and there will definitely be more to come from Sakho...

    ReplyDelete
  99. Me too considering he spent all his life in Paris and coming to a new country to live, think he took a bit of unfair criticism at times not easy for a player to adapt quickly to pl. Hope Br says to him when he meets up with squad that he wants him to be the main man, then a good pre season and he might kick on with a spring in his step.

    ReplyDelete
  100. Depends if you're speaking English or trying to speak German

    ReplyDelete
  101. Where was Ozil at Anfield? Did Sanchez see him there?... I'd rather play with Sterling, Sturridge and Coutinho anyday! Oh and Henderson and Gerrard or Arteta and Flamini would be better comparison

    ReplyDelete
  102. He should've gone to Bristol. After all it was voted the best city to live in!
    Woo! Go Bristol.

    ReplyDelete
  103. Yes, but those away PL matches wod be travel he'll from Sydney and nobody would attend home matches because you'd need binoculars to follow the action at the SCG;-)

    ReplyDelete
  104. yes, please.

    ReplyDelete
  105. ...We don't play football matches at the SCG. That's why we have Allianz stadium next door ;) Oh, and Olympic Stadium too...

    ReplyDelete
  106. As someone who has lived both Bristol (7 years) and London (8 years) I can concur: Bristol is a fantastic city to live, and for quality of life, it blows London right out of the water.

    ReplyDelete
  107. Brizzel through and through me! Although less the accent. Well, less than most Bristolians, but to 'outsiders' I'm still quite Bristolian.

    ReplyDelete
  108. That's a little harsh. Manchester City and and Manure have no problems attracting the talent, and from a non-partisan point of view the city offers little (if not less) than Liverpool. Build it and they will come. Everyone loves a winner.

I'd put the blame on Anfield if anything. With all due respect, the place is a wreck and in serious need of an upgrade. Hopefully they can redevelop it.

    ReplyDelete
  109. Simple one really. Arsenal WILL let there top players go whenever they ask. Liverpool WILL do everything in their power to stop that

    ReplyDelete
  110. Article is spot on, sadly. Liverpool as a location will never rival London or Paris or Barcelona either. That said, Manchester is not Paris or London either so we just have to aim high and focus on quality. There are still real quality people out there and we ought not talk ourselves into seeking only "ok" or "project" players who might be fabulous. Seems to me that's what the academy system is for. The transfer window, especially this one where we lost a super elite player, and have cash, requires us to focus on world class quality in as many positions as we can to offset Suarez's loss. Lets hope that result occurs...............

    ReplyDelete
  111. When a club is based in a horribly undesirable location like Manchester (Ugh), the manager makes all the difference. Ferguson was a major draw, as is Van Gaal, so a player who wouldn't normally spend five minutes in the hell-hole that is Manchester will go there just for the manager.

Rodgers doesn't have that allure. If Van Gaal was in charge at Anfield, I have no doubt big-name players would sign for Liverpool.

    ReplyDelete
  112. This article is pretty badly inacurrate. We have struggled to attract top players whilst out of the champions league.....but ManU are about to have that problem too. Torres was 'el nino' ....the chosen one of Spanish football and pretty much the hottest prospect in the World...he was coveted by every top club....we got him, partly because of history and prestige but more because we were in and around the business end of the CL. The key point you are missing is though is about money....if we were owned by Abramovich we would have got more of the targets we went for....pure and simple...very little to do with prestige. But there are still players motivated by history and prospects of success. A key definer for foreign players is the European Cup.....and five times winners will always be a big draw.....provided we are currently competing in it we will always attract some, if not all top players. At the end of the day did we really want a player who's main consideration appeared to be where his wife went shopping?? Finally, he is a very good player but would question if he is quite as good as people are saying. As we saw with Ozil....Real and Barca generally totally dominate 32-34 games of their league season due to the massive drop off in quality and as a result, its easier to rack up impressive goals and assists records.....in this league, where bottom can beat top and it isn't a massive shock....things will be a little tougher. I would say someone like Griezmann, who had a comparable but not quite as good record for a vastly inferior team, might be an equally good, cheaper option. JP.

    ReplyDelete
  113. he signed for arsenal because we are better,,simple as that

  114. Yeah but the London to us Joe soaps is a lot different to the London for the mega rich.

  115. Agreed, money helps though wherever you live:-)

  116. the major problem with Liverpool is the people that live there....seriously why would anyone want to live in a place where dressing up means wearing a clean tracksuit....
And why do the most unathletic slobs wear sports gear, yes, those obese fatties whose only aerobic exercise is to get their mammoth sized portions of cholesterol ridden pies out of the microwave. And once a fortnight picking up the jobseekers allowance or some other welfare benefit.

  117. You are better at filthy acts with innocent animals like the rest of the London low lifes.

It obviously not purely geographical. I think we have to be realistic and realise that most players would join Arsenal ahead of us, regardless of location.Yes we have history, but thats about it, and that history is stretching longer and longer each year...fs

  123. Jk,

I get your point but don't you think BR should have earned some cred with the managerial job he did last season?

  124. Absolutely, but Rodgers (arguably) doesn't have the pull of someone like Van Gaal, who has record in the game that demands instant respect from players.

There are some managers who can attract the biggest players irrespective of their team's position. Rodgers is a brilliant manager, but he's not really a draw for the world's best players.
