Dead Deal? After 2-weeks of talks, angry BR refuses to pay £18m for 'excellent' star

Last week, multiple reports claimed that Liverpool had reached an agreement to sign Sevilla left-back Alberto Moreno, but with La Liga club allegedly holding out for an inflated fee, the proposed deal appears to be hanging in the balance.

On Friday, Spanish newspaper El Confidential claimed that:

* Liverpool have agreed a 5-year deal contract with Moreno.

* The deal will be announced at some point this week

On Monday, the Daily Mail seemingly confirmed El Confidencial's story. It reported:

"Liverpool [have] agreed a £16.2million fee, which will rise on performances. [Moreno] is due to...travel to Merseyside on Monday with his father and his agent Javier Moya".

Late on Monday evening, however, The Mirror reported that:

* LFC and Sevilla have been 'in talks' for the past two weeks.
* Liverpool were given permission to speak to 'excellent' Moreno.
* The Reds have 'not agreed any fee' for the left-back.
* Rodgers is 'flatly refusing' to meet Sevilla's £18m valuation.
* Rodgers is 'annoyed' by Sevilla's attempts to inflate the price.

I've expressed reservations about the transfer fee in previous posts, so I'm glad that Rodgers is baulking at the asking price.

Moreno has done absolutely nothing in the game to warrant a transfer fee of £18m, and Sevilla seem to be using his recent call-up to the Spain squad as an excuse to try and fleece potential suitors.

I hope Rodgers stands firm on this. £16.2m just about covers it (although, for me, that's still a little high). Anything more than that is a giant rip-off.

  1. Another rumour has it that the fee has been agreed but the deal has come to a halt due to the structure of the payments. If that can be sorted then is no reason why Moreno will not become a Liverpool player.

The transfer window has not officially opened yet so many twists and turns are still on the way.

  2. Sure as long as we buy a decent left back this summer I'm not too bothered about this particular one. He may be talented and he may be good, from what I've seen he is, but he's not one of a kind.

  3. I'd rather us try and buy Bertrand or Davies from Swansea for much less. I read somewhere that James Rodriguez wants to leave Monaco too, he'll cost around £25, much better value for money than Lallana even though I think he's a very good player.

  4. have no fear, Spurs is here.

  5. It seems the player has agreed his contract, Sevilla playing silly beggars!!!.

  9. Just a thought.... IMO Shelvey is a better player than Suso and look what happened to him. Both are not needed at pool. We are good in the center or CAM. We need pace! Or high end players...the finished article. No more developmental players please. Suso was a clever player with a good eye for the pass and had good technical abilities, however I did not see any ability to beat players at will with pace..and I never saw him boss players off the ball. alla Sterling style as of late and even Allen is a little terrier and a nice ball winner retainer. I did not see any of this in Suso. Sadly his strengths or his skill set is already in a few players ahead in the pecking order and some have it in spades. So its very likely Suso would be a passenger on the pine every game. I cant think of a scenario in which we would call for him to make an impact. Just maybe if the opposite team was parking the bus with 9 defenders in the 18, just maybe Suso may help pick out a decisive pass to unlock but again cant see it that often. The only reason he would be used is in the lower less-probable injury or to replace a player to save their legs for another game in short time.

  10. Moreno's price makes the fee Shaw will go for look like child's play.

    ReplyDelete
  11. Did you ever saw him playing on the field???? He is a genius on the field with excellent vision and trickery.

  12. Very bad tune :-). Very bad

  13. The word put of Spain seems to be he's an average player anyway, albeit young and thus with plenty of time to improve!!

    ReplyDelete
  14. Yes and I know but I worry about his all round stamina,Similar to Coutinho,I worry about trickery,Joe Cole was the Master Juggler but little else. The general progression is seen as Spain to England or vice verse. Here we have Spain to us,then Spanish strugglers and now Portugal. Is the fee reflective of ability,Aspas was almost twice as much, enough said.

  15. Rodriguez cost Monaco £36m one year ago. If Monaco are planning on selling then I cannot think it will be less than what they paid for him especially when he had a pretty good first season.

  16. Regarding how much we will spend on Lallana or Markovic- bloody Quardado from mid table Italian frickin side will go for 20 mill!! Atleast.
If we payed 35 mill for DS it would be worth it- it is about getting the right player, and not wasting money on Aspas kind a players.

  18. B Rodgers needs to forget Signing A Moreno(21) and offer £19M for I Rakitic(26) and snare him from Barcelona's grasp.

Barcelona have deal in place to sign I Rakitic(26) for 20 euros= £16.18M for a world class croatian international

Yet they are asking for £18M for an untried untested left back A Moreno(21), B Rodgers should switch all his attention to bringing I Rakitic(26) to Anfield. Offer Seville £18M, Barcelona will have to match it and doubt will as they are trying to bring in A Turan(29) Of A Madrid, Reus(25) Of B Dortmund, Cuadrado(26) Of Fiorentina and Marquinhos(20) Of Roma to Nou Camp this season as part of their rebuilding stage.

B Rodgers pinching I Rakitic(26) from Barcelona shouldn't effect them too much, Rodgers offer £18-£20M and bring him to Anfield.

And then he should bring in B Davies(20) Of Swansea or R Bertrand(24) Of Chelsea to club for £4-£6M to compete and Cover J Enrique(27) this season.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Rakitic wants to stay in Spain.

    ReplyDelete
  20. MATE LFC ARE NOT A CLUB THAT CAN SATISFY RAckitic needs
this is one of the top players in the world
and liverpool have never signed a top player(apart from suarez but if he never bit baakal we would not have him)
ever , we make top players
lets be honest barcaloena, bayern munich, man utd ,chelsea ,real madrid are all giants compared to us
and dont say we won 5 ucls , progress can only be made with an objective view

    ReplyDelete
  21. Why do liverpool always spend so much money? we are no more better then city or chelsea

buy cheap .look at everton bought baines for 3m , rafa bought doseena for 7m
buy ben davies not some overrated Spaniard

    ReplyDelete
  22. It is easier to buy cheap when you are smaller club. We come knocik and the figure doubles.
Plus there is less fear player will fail and less pressure- at Anfield every game is a must win, and every display is disected.

    ReplyDelete
  23. are you seriously saying lfc are a bigger club then everton?

    ReplyDelete
  24. What team do you support? I Rakitic(26) should be S Gerrard's natural predecessor. I Rakitic(26) is not going to oust a fully fit or injury or suspension free Busquets(25), Xavi(34) or Iniesta(30) out of the Barcelona centre midfield.

And if he has any common sense he would know that as when Mascherano left us he was best defensive in midfielder in world but couldn't get ahead of Busquets in midfield so he was converted to centre back.

Fabregas was wanted for 3 seasons, then they got him and he has never been able to displace Xavi out of the team and is being shipped out this summer.

A Song had a great season with Arsenal then went Barcelona and for last two seasons, he has warmed bench.

B Rodgers should bring I Rakitic(26) to club for £18-£25M at all costs. He is the type of player we should be approaching if we plan to keep hold of L Suarez(27) this summer

    ReplyDelete
  25. Your name is Ignoramus or is it another case of brilliant world famous English humor?

    ReplyDelete
  26. How do you know that? Are we stupid? Barcelona put deal down for their best player I Rakitic(26) a world class Centre Midfielder for 20 euros = £16.18M but as we are English team. They want £18m OFF US FOR an UNKNOWN untested Young Spanish Left back

    ReplyDelete
  27. liverpool are not bigger they are just run by a sugar daddy like chelsea and city

    ReplyDelete
  28. We are bigger and better always have been and always will be!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  29. His father said so. He said so many times.
    Not comparing Moreno and Rakitic.

    ReplyDelete
  30. rackitic has no time for liverpool
if he is available why would he choose lfc over the likes of man utd, city, chelsea, bayern munich

plus fsg do not like spending 20 odd m on a player over 25 who has had one good season in a league where aspas looked like suarez

    ReplyDelete
  31. Hi Guys...I will thank god a lots if this man doesn't be in LFC next season...He nt a gd player,he cost a lots and he's not in Spain team..i think BR are crazy look at this man...Enrique will get well soon n he's very gd LB...why nt Felipe luis,Schmelzer,marcelo...This player can make the difference and better than moreno...

    ReplyDelete
  32. why liverpool, arsernal and everton are just as small as each other !
right now chelsea is the biggest club in england

    ReplyDelete
  33. Well until B Rodgers takes his finger out we will never ever really know, what is the most frustrating thing for me is B Rodgers spend £10.5M on F Borini(22), He spends £15M On J Allen(24) and £18M on M Sakho(24) yet he won't put in be a bloody bid for a world class centre midfielder who would be the best signing this summer.

Out of all the players we have been linked with this summer I Rakitic(26) would be best suited for club and move club forward as S Gerrard(34) has one more good season in him at best.

    ReplyDelete
  34. I flagged your post as inappropriate. I REALLY think it is.

    ReplyDelete
  35. look rackitic cant defend as good as gerrard
jordan rossiter will be gerrards replacement

    ReplyDelete
  36. I am from country next to Croatia. I believe I can make an educated guess about him, and I think he will end his international career in Spain, if he can. We will see...

    ReplyDelete
  37. Because Liverpool and Man United whether i hate them or not are still the two biggest clubs in England and due to our amazing season last year, the world has taken notice and with Champions league football due back at Anfield only the best players should be brought to club. And I Rakitic(26) would is a ball playing midfielder, he would not suit Chelsea at All. He would never oust Yaya at Man City and B Munich have too many great centre midfielders already( Kroos, Martinez, Thiago, Schweingsteiger and Gotze)

    ReplyDelete
  38. Well i hope B Rodgers bids for him and that is not the case

    ReplyDelete
  39. S Gerrard(34) has only started playing as DM last season, I Rakitic(26) is a box to box midfielder. He will bring all the class, creativity and goals that the S Gerrard(34) of Old used to bring to club for over decade. E Can(21) will play the Defensive Midfield role for club

    ReplyDelete
  40. Ha ha ha ha Chelsea have never ever been a big club and never ever will be a big club. Liverpool and Manchester United are the two biggest and best clubs in England

    ReplyDelete
  41. Teixeira over Suso for me,way better work rate, probably better attitude

    ReplyDelete
  42. How do you know Rakitic will want join Liverpool or if he is even keen on playing in England and how do you know Orme is not correct in saying that Rakitic wants to stay in Spain?

And how do you know the finer details about a deal with Barcelona. I have read that Rakitic has a £33 million buyout clause.

Like I said before. The selling club will determine the price for a player.

If Rakitic was going for £16.18M then why have Chelsea not signed him yet. £16.18M is petty cash for Abramovich.

Oh and by the way, Chelsea put in a bid for Moreno before we did so there must be a good reason why we are chasing the youngster who has probably been scouted by many other teams too.

    ReplyDelete
  43. great player but has no chance at lfc

    ReplyDelete
  44. You can say that again :-)

    ReplyDelete
  45. What kind of argument is this? Why, then, have Chelsea not tried to sign the 50+ midfielders currently available around Europe? Teams can only have a finite number of players, and your logic is extremely flawed.

    ReplyDelete
  46. It's inappropriate in the sense that someone could actually believe that Chelsea are the 'biggest club in England' :-)

brendan is, however, perfectly entitled to that view.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Well at £16.18m Sevilla have already said good bey to Rakitic have they not?

    ReplyDelete
  48. FdotM is right. It is a fact. Using every conceivable objective criterion, LFC is a bigger club:

    * More trophies
    * Bigger stadium
    * Bigger sponsorship deals
    * Bigger worldwide fanbase
    * Consistently higher revenue
    * Bigger profits
    * Higher transfer spend (Gross and Net)
    * Richer club overall
    * Greater net worth overall
    * Greater net worth in terms of playing assets.

    Etc.

That's not to undermine Everton, which is a great club in its own right, but LFC is a bigger club.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Reports in Spain suggest he's got the wrong mentality. Combine that with no progress physically and an average season on loan and it's another one to say goodbye to. The cream rises to the top (usually) and despite a lot of support this guy doesn't seem cut out for Liverpool.

    ReplyDelete
  50. we're not getting anyone are we?

    ReplyDelete
  51. They already own the 50+ midfielders and have sent them out on loan

    ReplyDelete
  52. Was assuming our relative lack of links to midfield playmakers was die to suso staying with the squad this year.
He asked for a lone move to gain more playing time. Can't see us doing a deal like pogba. BR has said he wants two players for every position which he wants to achieve in a squad of 19-20 versatile players.
So as we only have 4/5 midfielders (countino is the ?) Lucas looks like he's being replaced with Gerrard going deeper and Can coming in. We need another person, I like ratikic, so suso seam like he's going to fill this hole.

    ReplyDelete
  53. everton fans told me that in liverpool most people support everton
they also argue that liverpool are to blame for them not having any european cups

and we could argue that everton have bought through more youth players from liverpool

    ReplyDelete
  54. that's all well and good. and as fans ourselves we'd want nothing less. but do you really see us getting rakitic? i don't.

    ReplyDelete
  55. chelsea are the biggest
-they have done best in europe of all english clubs since cl was formed constantly getting in the semis

-more recent success, the special ones in charge

    - they have more fans then liverpool
-they have more money then liverpool, most of which is generated through sponsorship's

    - fernando torres ,raul meireles and benayoun proved chelsea is bigger then liverpool

    ReplyDelete
  56. Well you've convinced me. No point letting facts get in the way. Everton it is

    ReplyDelete
  57. i am a liverpool fan
i just hate this feeling that we are some sort of special fans at a special club
we are a normal football club we have not won the league for 24 years and no fa cup in 8 years
that is the achievements of a normal club

i love lfc but lets not build it up because it will only crash harder

    ReplyDelete
  58. - won just once. man utd and liv have had the same amount of success. unless u think getting into the semis is all what matters.

    - no trophies last year with the "special one" since we're talking about the recent past.

    - speculative.

    - i dont even... i guess roman's just a well wisher for chelsea then.

    - sturridge has proved liverpool is bigger bettering the collective chelsea record of the three above combined in one and a half seasons.

    ReplyDelete
  59. why would we loan a chelsea player if they are not bigger then us

    ReplyDelete
  60. 1 chelsea
    2 man u
    3 city
    liverpool everton arsernal joint 4th

    ReplyDelete
  61. very easy:

    salah,willian ,torres,meireles, benayoun,

all players liverpool either were desperate to sign or desperately in love with preferred chelsea to liverpool

    moses , sturridge
obviously sturridge is a great signing but a chelsea reject nevertheless

    finally 2012 cl winners chelsea
when was the last time we won a cl?

istanbul is long forgotten now why have lfc still not won another cl

    ReplyDelete
  62. dont worry we have the mighty lambert

  64. We're back in Europe6:36 pm, June 10, 2014

Why we used to stick with these overated players.. has anyone cheked zakaria bakkali and mempish depay ? They were an absolute alternative replacement for both moreno and lallana ( at least on fifa14) 😊

    ReplyDelete
  65. I can clear this up with some logic. Jaimie's argument is based on the premise that the majority of signings should become first team regulars, otherwise why bother? This is reasonable but something highly unusual happened at Liverpool last season; the existing cadre improved out of sight. Liverpool became the second best team in the league, from being the seventh best the year before. The calibre of player Liverpool were able to sign may well have improved the 2012-13 team, but were generally speaking not good enough to improve Rodger's 2013-14 team. Take Allen, £15m and a good prospect. Hasn't played as much as expected. Why? Jordan Henderson became an England starter. Gerrard had a renaissance, Sturridge and Couthino blossomed, Sterling became one of the top five youngsters in the world. Even Skertl got his act together. It will take high class players to improve Liverpool now and those players would have been very difficult to attract to Liverpool after they had finished seventh in 2013. He is in a better position now and should be able to attract better players.

    ReplyDelete
  66. Logan, you don't have a clue. A lot of things you use chelsea to justify or waffle in an argument. Are you a sly chelsea fan? Barcelona have a deal in place for 20 euros it was on sky sports transfer centre news earlier. 20 Euros= £16:18M and Barcelona will also give them Denis Suarez on loan to sweeten deal.

I Rakitic(26) would be great signing for us and i a sure if B Rodgers went for him he would have great chance of signing him.

But in last 5 years the only world class player we have signed is L Suarez(27). Sturridge(24) and Coutinho(21) have been class quality additions but rest have been average/poor to say the least.

    ReplyDelete
  67. Check sky sports transfer centre news and newsnow Barcelona, Barcelona's first offer of 10 euros Seville took offence with and then they have offered I Rakitic(26) high salary and got 15-20 euro deal in place plus loaning Seville Denis Suarez for the season( B Team player).

That is why i hope B Rodgers puts in £18M bid and starts auction off for him, Chelsea wanted either Koke(21) Of A Madrid, Fabregas(27) Of Barcelona or Khedira(27) Of Real Madrid.

Chelsea were not after I Rakitic(26), Manchester United were supposedly.

    ReplyDelete
  68. I think Chelsea actually already have 50+ midfielders. I agree with Jaimie. What on earth would they do with another 50+?

    ReplyDelete
  69. The annoying thing is he is available and we are wasting time trying to sign A Moreno(21) who is young unproven untested player. Yet their best player who is world class is available, S Gerrard(34) is class quality passer and player but he no longer is mobile or quick. And against young mobile teams with young mobile pacey centre midfielders S Gerrard(34) get exposed.

    ReplyDelete
  70. As usual, we are 100% in agreement. I put in a post on the scary resemblance of this summer to last summer as it relates to dithering and not trying to make up for quality with quantity. We should go balls out for Rakitic and Alex Sanchez. Sell of Aspas, Alberto, Reina and others so net cost is largely cancelled! Do these 2 and dive into defenders......I think my post got edited out but I don't know for sure or if so, why..........

    ReplyDelete
  71. un-impressed by Bertrand.................

    ReplyDelete
  72. its all about jordan ibe, we dont need suso

    ReplyDelete
  73. I can assure you that Liverpool and Arsenal have bigger fanbase than Chelsea. Everybody knows that Man.U have the biggest fanbase in England ( Probably the world )

As far as i remember City has been doing very well the past couple of years. much better than Chelsea. when was the last time Chelsea won the EPL ??

    ReplyDelete
  74. I disagree. You believe that but that doesn't mean it is an undeniable truth. I personally believe they have.

    ReplyDelete
  75. Same here its because we want the best players at our club, for our club/squad to get better we need better players brought to club.

Last season Man City spent £30M on Fernandinho who was a success and Chelsea spent £27M on Matic in January. B Rodgers should offer £18-£27M for I Rakitic(26) and bring him to Anfield.

A Sanchez(25) we could and should bring to club with £22-£26M offer, we could bring both these players to Anfield for no more than £55M

    ReplyDelete
  76. Skrtel was pretty much the only defender who did!

    ReplyDelete
  77. Back it up. I will. We have conceded more goals with Mignolet between the sticks than in the seasons we finished outside the top 4. We've conceded more with Sakho on the pitch than with him off it. Agger-Skrtel was still the partnership that conceded the least goals per game average and kept the most clean sheets last year.

    ReplyDelete
  78. I thought the entire committee got wacked in part III?

    ReplyDelete
  79. One again I have dealt with these things and no one at all has ever given a good enough argument against.

Firstly we didn't finish outside the top for this season so it doesn't matter.

We have conceded more goals with Sakho on the pitch than when he is off it? Is that literally true?
If it is or not the fact that Sakho has played against the other top four teams more than any other defender barring Skrtle. Does that mean nothing? Are these teams not more likely to score? Or that Sakho has had an unfortunate run of games through Mignolet's worst run of form. Something Agger and Toure have fortunately missed most of. Or that by chance and with no connection to his own game there have been at least 5 unforced errors leading to goals by colleagues.

The fact that he has the second best stats of our CBs means nothing as people use the goals thing out of context and there is a hell of a lot of context. Jaimie argues some psychological point that means more mistakes happen in the team even with Sakho even though they have no direct connection. I think this is bull. I think he has been unfortunate as there is nothing actually connecting him to errors of colleagues leading to goals.Unless your one of the worst kind of blikered people who blame Gerard's misscontrol on him.

    ReplyDelete
  80. Passing it from the back may be new to people in England mate but in Belgium and the Netherlands it has been common practice for decades now. It's something Mignolet will have grown up with. But before we get into the discussion whether Mignolet is a good keeper or not, he IS a good keeper. He's just not an improvement on what we had. He's a downgrade. So do I want Reina back? No, I want Muslera of Galatasaray. Now there's a goalkeeper. And yes Xabi Alonso had his lesser seasons too but that was not the point. The point was about making an immediate impact and Alonso, in his first season, did exactly that. He was spectacular. I'm also convinced had he played under Rodgers and not that man management disaster that was Benitez, he would have been more consistent. That's why I think it's a crying shame he's extended his contract at Real. I would have loved to have seen him play under Rodgers.

    ReplyDelete
  81. I could say roll on part III but I'd miss Logan v JK

    ReplyDelete
  82. There was a caveat of for years. Try not really practicing any skill for a while and see what happens. Alonso had spectacular moments in his first season but as a whole he was not as good as your making out. He took time to adapt. Like Continue his form was up and down. Fewer players are consistently good in their first seasons than are. You can literally name them that is how few.
