Done Deal: LFC to sign 'excellent' £18m star by the end of the day. Overpriced...?

Rickie Lambert has officially signed for Liverpool FC, but that may not be the end of the club's transfer business today. Reports in Spain claim that the Reds are close to sealing another deal, which is due to be completed this afternoon.

According to Spanish newspaper Marca:

* Liverpool have agreed a €22m [£18m] fee with Sevilla for coveted left-back Albert Moreno.

* The transfer will be completed 'in the next few hours'

* Unlike previously reported by Marca, Suso is not part of the deal

This follows a report earlier this month in the Liverpool Echo, which claimed:

"Sevilla's Alberto Moreno at the top of LFC's wish list, and Rodgers is a big admirer of his talents.

Some info about Moreno, who was cut from Spain's world Cup squad over the weekend:

* 2013-14: 43 apps for Sevilla
* 3 goals/3 assists.
* 2 apps for the Spain national team.
* 2013: Helped Spain win the U21 European Championship.
* Named in Del Bosque's provisional squad for the 2014 World Cup.

* Passing accuracy: 78%
* Duels won: 45%
* Chances created: 16
* Defensive errors: 2

When asked about Moreno's potential in November, Sevilla boss Unai Emery told Estadio Deportivo:

"Alberto is 21 years old, and he is an excellent prospect. He came into the team very quickly, and we have to control expectations, and make sure he retains humility. I am very happy with his performances".

To be honest, £18m seems steep for a 21-year old with only 61 senior appearances to his name, and no experience outside of the Spanish league...

  1. lets hope he is as good as Azpilicueta......

  2. Chelsea apparently made an offer from Moreno before we did so if that is the case then he must be worth it.

  3. I think its pretty clear that valuations of players have nothing to do with the actual ability of them or experience they have.
It just seems to be done by, 1 whether the player wants to leave, and if he does they sometimes go for a bit less.
2 the hype surrounding them, so if they've been in the press a lot of talked up a lot, then they cost more.
3, how much money the buying club has, if they are 'rich' then they get ripped off.
    4. and probably the ultimate one, is stubbornness. If they club is stubborn, then usually you find the club wanting to buy will find more money.

  5. BR may not play him at left back ??

    ReplyDelete
  6. He is one of the top leftback prospects in the world, he and azpilicueta will be spain's fullbacks for the next 10 years, so this is defo a good buy!

    ReplyDelete
  7. Hope he is worth it, B Rodgers could have brought in three good full backs this summer for just over 18M

    J Obita(20) Of Reading for 3-5M LB
    B Davies(20) Of Swansea for 4-6M LB
    N Clyne(23) Of Southampton for 3-10M

B Rodgers main signing this summer should be I Rakitic(26) Of Seville for 25-30M

If B Rodgers bring in A Moreno(21) for 18M that means he would have spent 36M on two defenders during last two seasons( M Sakho 23), just hope he hits the ground running straight away.

As J Enrique(27) will be fully fit come pre season and he is the best full bak we have at club, all he needed was a good understudy to compete with him regularly.

  8. For me he is as good if not better (certainly more experienced) than Luke Shaw - but without the £10m premium on English players

  9. This is the one transfer that really worries me to be honest. I've watched Sevilla a lot this last year and I just can't see what all the fuss is about. According to reports the only reason Sevilla are so willing to sell is they know they are getting a very good deal for him. I know we definitely need an upgrade at LB but I just can't see Moreno being that upgrade. Incredibly lightweight and flimsy, can't defend at all and considering how much time he spends in the opposition half he doesn't exactly set the world alight. If we are willing to go to around 20mil for him why on earth are we not willing to at least try for Shaw as he is easily a better and younger prospect.

    ReplyDelete
  10. Simple answer is wait and see. If we sign him at said price and he makes the left back position his for years to come helping us win trophies whilst earning himself spain caps then yes he'll be worth it. No matter how much you spend, there is always a gamble with most players as to how they will adapt in a new league/country, from what i have heard/seen the lad has talent and huge potential. Left back is an important area of improvement needed for us, lets hope if this goes through that it pays off. Also gives chance for flanno to revert back to his natural position.

    ReplyDelete
  11. Please tell me how you have come this conclusion...

    ReplyDelete
  12. No lets hope he is better

    ReplyDelete
  13. People were screaming for his signature and now that its a done deal .. you start doubting him and his ability. Yes the price is abit steep but how much is Luke shaw going to go for? This kid is going to the Worldcup with a star studded Spain side. Yeah Del Bosque really considered the fact he played 61 games and not outside spain too. I for one am over the moon with this signing.

    ReplyDelete
  14. He's not going to the world cup...

    ReplyDelete
  15. Azpilicueta's attacking instincts are limited. Moreno has far more potential at 21 years of age. Lets hope he matches Azpilicueta's defensive abilities though

    ReplyDelete
  16. Jamie just noticed you have referenced Unai Emery as the Valencia boss, think you meant Sevilla :)

    ReplyDelete
  17. Ahh I swear he played in Spains recent friendly though?

    ReplyDelete
  18. He was in the provisional squad of 30 but didn't make the cut. I wouldn't read to much into that though as Del Bosque basically dropped all the inexperienced youngsters.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Pleased with this deal................£27m for Shaw yet this lad won the UEFA Cup 2 weeks ago!!!

    ReplyDelete
  20. Too many big guns in for Raketa. His father said he advised him to go to Barca, and at least stay in Spain...

    ReplyDelete
  21. I t looks like a great window so far! I would offer 50 mill for Yaya, and end it there..

    ReplyDelete
  22. ..........For a 31 year old? Great thinking behind that transfer mate.

    ReplyDelete
  23. I'm sorry but that is totally irrelevant to a player's individual ability. Have you actually watched him play or are you basing your judgement on the hype?

    ReplyDelete
  24. I hope it's true- stealing from them is a bonus.. And he is worth it- he can give us 5 great years and than we will be able to sell him for at least 25...

    ReplyDelete
  25. The Gareth Bale thinking again.. Why cant a young LB ..stay a LB? He is brought to fill that 'problem position' at LB for LFC.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Very much a sellers market. We want the lad we have to pay the price or find a cheaper, better option, which is unlikely?! If Shaw is going for 27 million, who has less experience and won nothing, then the Moreno deal sounds about right,I hope!!

    ReplyDelete
  27. He can give 3 great seasons, and with our squad plus him I'm thinking 3 major trophies, so.. I know it ain't happening, and if I was the owner I would't do it, but he is just what we need in our team to be in the top of Europe.

    ReplyDelete
  28. If we say Moreno is done, and with Lambert already in, who should we bring in your opinion?

    ReplyDelete
  29. He -4 years is exactly what we need... shame a player like toure doesn't exist two times ... Oh wait we have kolo ;-)

    ReplyDelete
  30. I have watched him and he is superb, very quick and great touch too....................what's your point?

    ReplyDelete
  31. Yes the price of defenders seems to have hit a record high and that's before the world cup. You have to pay a premium as soon as a player has that u21/full intl experience, either that or you try to unearth potential through your own country's lower leagues...there are also a few lads coming up through our academy as well.

    ReplyDelete
  32. I was not 'screaming for his signature', so don't generalise please. I was indifferent about the deal, and in earlier articles, suggested that transfer fee is too high.

It doesn't matter if Moreno has been picked for Spain; how many young players have featured in international squads over the years and are then never heard from again?

The bottom line is Moreno has comparatively little experience, and has never played outside Spain. Hopefully, he'll be a good signing, but there's no guarantee. Sakho is proof of that. Much more experience than Moreno; international for France; cost £18m, and is not the sold defender everyone expected.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Pretty much the same... At the end of the season Yaya looked very tired, but still had enough in him to score, assist and cut the opponents in crucial moments. He is the reason we didn't win the title. This year...

    ReplyDelete
  34. A few teams, including ManU, Chelsea and City... It's reported that he will decide over his future after the world cup

    ReplyDelete
  35. I'll keep saying it, I think Sakho will come good....

    ReplyDelete
  36. Please don't start that again, haha.. Hope he impresses in Brazil, think he will

    ReplyDelete
  37. I'm with you Jamie way too much money. I may be proved wrong and I hope am but I see this as the major blooper of this summer.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Easy mistake to make as he did actually manage Valencia as well!

    ReplyDelete
  39. If you could choose 2 more players, who would you get?

    ReplyDelete
  40. I accept your opinion and agree he is very quick and technically good and that will get you by on the whole in Spain but the PL is a completely different kettle of fish. The guy shirks a tackle, gets knocked about and can't defend. Of course he can improve but for me we need a LB who is strong, can defend primarily and then helps out the attack not the other way round.

    ReplyDelete
  41. For that kind of cash they will have seen a LOT of him. I just can't imagine them doing this without massively rating him and having some pretty damn good reasons for thinking he's the business. I think it's a good move, he's clearly talented and no one gets on the fringes of the Spanish national side without having some solid form. I wish I could say more and know something about the player but I'm happy to find out about him in August.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Theoretical of course but say Ricardo Rodriquez was available for 10 mil. Would you still go for Moreno at 20 mil?

    ReplyDelete
  43. Absolutely agree with you, Yaya carried City to the title, he has been the 2nd best PL player this year just behind suarez IMO...
I'd take Moreno, because he's a young and strong Left back (were really weak in this position), and either shaqiri or Pedro, who i rate very highly, then add a DM (Emre Can would be awesome). If there's still some money left I would go for right back, and sell Johnson, who is in my opinion our weakest link ... I expect kelly, lucas, aspas, and assaidi + a few youngstars (yesil, teixeira, ...) to be gone until the end of the window :)

    ReplyDelete
  44. Sounds good to me. £18M is indeed a bit much to be honest. The only thing with Spanish players is abroad is that when Real or Barca comes calling they cannot help themselves lol!

Hopefully he will flourish under BR.

Now we need to get rid of some deadwood.

    ReplyDelete
  45. I tend to agree with you re the price tag is a little steep for such a young player however sometimes you have to take a gamble

    ReplyDelete
  46. Gentle folks we are in CL now every player is going to be expensive. This kid is on the level of Shaw so give the man time. Sakho will come good. £30 Mill for Lallana?

    ReplyDelete
  47. With Moreno, we have Flanno waiting for GJ to fcuk up, so I think we are all right there..
If Can is as good as they say, him and Llalana would do it for me.
Sell Borini, Lukas, Aspas, Alberto. Bring back Suso, and I have the feeling we should loan, not sell Assaidi..
And maybe I am pushing it, but Yaya was POTY

    ReplyDelete
  48. Agreed we have to pay a premium for any player these days. I'm completely unconvinced that he is as good as Shaw. They are very different. Shaw is 18 but has the power and pace of a top, top full back. Moreno has the pace but severely lacking any power. The only similarities between the two is they are both better going forward.
For what its worth I also think Sakho will come good. Wouldn't pay 30 mil for Lallana either but at least with him we know more or less what we are getting.

    ReplyDelete
  49. 31? - I thought he was 6 the way he carried on about his birthday...

    ReplyDelete
  50. First & foremost, i think reggardless of which players we all think we should sign, it's great to see LFC finally acting decisively in the transfer market & getting their business done early for once. Also, it looks like FSG are gonna back Brendan properly now so that he can get the targets he wants which again, regardless of what we all think of who gets signed, deserves credit. I for one am over the moon with Moreno if/when it's official because he was my number one choice for LB. Contrary to what others think, from what i'vee seen Moreno certainly can defend & doesn't make rash challenges either, add his pace & a very good cross, pass & control. The presence of Enrique will actually be a huge benefit in his learning curve & over the coming months he can bulk up to help deal with the rigours of the english game. He's not going to the WC either so he can move over & settle in nice & early before having a solid pre-season of training. I had hoped that discussions for Moreno would have naturally led to a double swoop involving Rakitic but hey, there's still time for that one! Hope we drop our interest in Lallana as well, Firmino all day every day!!

    ReplyDelete
  51. Azpillicuetar does not look like he is solid but he was able to keep Ashley Cole on the bench. Good thing about Lallana is he is hungry and Csec is starting to sound nice. 1 year apart.

    ReplyDelete
  52. For me can would be the best addition to our midfield as he adds muscles, versatility and a good alternative, Soton are pushing the price to much, forget about lallana ....

    ReplyDelete
  53. * Dream centre-back signing: Mats Hummels. Highly unlikely, though.

    * Backup CB signing: Dejan Lovren: Prem-proven; international class; comparatively affordable, renowned for being a vocal leader/organiser. Best years ahead.

    * AM: Adam Lallana is a good shout but not for more than £20m. Again, Prem proven; minimal settling-in time required, upgrade on Allen/Lucas; great competition for Henderson/Coutinho.

    * AM: Pedro. Massively experienced; won every trophy under the sun, so he knows how to win; excellent creative output; played alongside the world's best players for years. Great competition for all the club's attacking players.

    * CM: Diame. I see absolutely no downside to signing this guy. Very cheap. Big and strong. Offers something different to any other midfielder at the club. Desperately wants to play for LFC. Prem proven, so no settling-in time needed. It's a no-brainer.

    ReplyDelete
  54. I know, but I said we should bring him 6 months ago, would be great to tell my friends BR agrees with me..

    ReplyDelete
  55. There are some worries here aout the money but if he is good that will not matter - IF!

My biggest concern is for that sort of money he does not appear to even have a nickname,

    ReplyDelete
  56. Are you serious about Diame? I like all the other names mentioned but Diame is a buffoon of a footballer. I have a lot of West Ham fans as pals and they would get rid of him at a drop of a hat. I think his only good games ever have been against LFC which is why a lot of LFC fans rate him.

    ReplyDelete
  57. I have lot of Liverpool fans as pals stil saying Hendo is no good..

    ReplyDelete
  58. Yes, I am serious. Buffoon of a footballer? Based on what? Sounds like hearsay to me. Jamie Redknapp and John Aldridge want LFC to sign him, and I'm sure they wouldn't throw their support behind a buffoon. Not that their views sway me in any way - I've seen Diame play a lot (one of my friends is West Ham season ticket holder), and he'd make an excellent squad player.

    ReplyDelete
  59. Fair enough Jamie, football is about opinions and everyone is entitled to their own but I would seriously shed tears if Diame is the limit of our ambitions.

    ReplyDelete
  60. I should have added...he can be quite lazy, his control at times goes completely AWOL, he thinks he can dribble and beat a player when in reality he just awkwardly stumbles into them (rather clumsy). Not only that I really don't like his attitude, thinks he has a divine right to play for a top team and IMO he has done more or less nothing to justify that status.

    ReplyDelete
  61. I agree with everyone on the list there except Diame. Though I think Lovren may be a bit expensive for a back up.

The only hesitation I have about Diame is that he supposedly has a very affordable release clause (3.5m I think), yet no one has matched it. There must be a reason why.

    ReplyDelete
  62. I don't think it's a question of ambition; simply strengthening the squad. Diame would be a squad player, and based on his comments in the past, I don't believe he'd have a problem with that. Let BR work some magic on him, and he could be a real asset. He clearly has all the tools; perhaps all he needs is the right manager.

    ReplyDelete
  63. Re Lovren - when I say 'back-up', I mean as a back-up option to Hummels, not as a back-up in the squad. For me, Lovren should come in and partner Skrtel next season, relegating Sakho to squad player status.

You're right about the back-up clause - it is strange.

    ReplyDelete
  64. Iagree mostly on Diame, so I will get out of the discussion...

    ReplyDelete
  65. I see where you are coming from in that he would bring something different but personally I'd rather we took the gamble on Can (admittedly I haven't seen him play much). The other thing with Diame is he isn't really a DM more of a box to box midfielder and I think we need a top box to box midfielder rather than a squad player.

    ReplyDelete
  66. I know Skrtel was probably our best defender this year but I would rather see Lovren come in to partner Sakho. I've never particularly rated Srktel and he has always got a mistake/moment of madness in him. Sakho still has A LOT to prove but I think he will get there with a consistent run of games.

    ReplyDelete
  67. We got our deals done early last season too. The one thing that is to our advantage now is that we can offer guaranteed Champions league football which we have not been able to offer in the previous four seasons.

    ReplyDelete
  68. He does a really good job of harrying the opposition for 90 minutes (or close on). Unfortunately, a lot of that goes unnoticed by the stats men who focus on chances created, goals and tackles etc.
Often he does not win the ball directly but he makes it difficult for the opposition and others then pick up the pieces.
I agree he seems to lack confidence and gives the simple pass to Gerrard rather than try something himself but i remember when Gerrard was out he showed he could make a good pass or three

    ReplyDelete
  69. I think he is a better player than Enrique because he has come from a bigger team than Newcastle

    ReplyDelete
  70. I understand. That makes more sense about Lovren.

I'm still not convinced that Skrtel is on the team next year. I could see him being sold while his value is at its peak, and we end up holding on to Agger instead.

In my opinion, we need to keep Agger, Skrtel, and Sakho, and pick up an additional CB (such as Lovren). Unless someone feels like Andre Wisdom or Martin Kelly can step in and fill that role.

Does anyone know how long Kolo's contract is for? I know he had some shaky moments last year, but I think he is solid as the 4th or 5th CB on the team.

    ReplyDelete
  71. Looking back on it, Enrique was actually a very astute signing by us. He's not a world-beater by any means, but value for money, he is a decent player.

But Moreno would definitely be an upgrade, both in the short term and the long term.

    ReplyDelete
  72. I believe Kolo has another year on his contract although if someone wanted to take him off our hands that could well happen this summer. I think Agger is probably going to go as well (shame as I always rated him but he's definitely dropped off the last year or 2). Next year I think our CBs will be something like this... Lovren (or new signing), Sakho and Skrtel. Then we have Illori, Wisdom and Kelly who could all come in if needs must. I would rather some of the younger lads were given the chance over someone like Kolo.

    ReplyDelete
  73. This will be Liverpool's most important signing of the summer if they get it over the line, we haven't had a proper fullback since Steve Finnan, fact!

    ReplyDelete
  74. I think with the limited options available at LB we were always going to have to pay over the odds for a decent one. Add that to the fact that he is only 21 and a capped spainish player in and around the squad his value is going to be high. I think teams know that decent LBs are going to be sought after this window with a lot of the old guard getting on a bit. Moreno looks a decent option to me. Its a risky transfer of course but lets hope it pays off.

    ReplyDelete
  75. I think you can throw in Riise too.

    ReplyDelete
  76. Moreno can play LB, LM and LW. So we have cover for Enrique then Flanno can play his fav RB position. Wisdom will be back and we can still keep Johnson for one more season. We should be fine. Get Emre Can and another attacking midfield like Sanchez, we would have concluded our business this summer.

    ReplyDelete
  77. I guess, but Finann was as depensable as they come, I think they both left Liverpool around the same time and we haven't got it right since!

    ReplyDelete
  78. Tell me when it is officially done

    ReplyDelete
  79. I think we are aiming a bit higher than Finnan and Riise to be honest. At least I really hope so.

    ReplyDelete
  80. Hope we sign a competitive goalie now and couple of attacking players (AM and Wingers). That's it for next year.

Caner Erkin (another Liverpool left back target) is now available for free Jaimie, what do you reckon?

  81. I'm relieved that Suso was not included in the deal. He will come back to Liverpool and be like a new signing!!

    ReplyDelete
  82. It is the same as me asking whether Reus was available of £10m whether we will still go for Lallana?

    ReplyDelete
  83. Moreno is spanish term for a person of darker complexion - really hope Suarez does not address him by his last name, or it could be trouble.

  88. Well, no one is going to replace Gerrard there and he will play most of the important games. Lucas Leiva is already there as a backup so I don't see us spending huge on DM to play second fiddle to Gerrard. Maybe we buy a cheap squad player like Diame to provide extra depth but then that's it.

    ReplyDelete
  89. Well Diame is what I had in mind.. Or Can if the price is right and he is good as they say... I would sell Lukas. Great service from him, but I think it's time to move on..

    ReplyDelete
  90. I would keep Lucas who is already settled and will be willing to sit on bench instead of spending money on Can. The reason Lucas looked average was because he was played out of position. He is still a very good DM in my opinion and can do the job when required. Decent backup to Gerrard. Only problem I see is that he is injury prone like Gerrard.

    ReplyDelete
  91. Uhhh. I just wish my boss and my brother could read your post, I've been telling them the same all year..
It is not that he doesn't have those difficult passes in him, it's that he knows that there is someone else in charge of that..

    ReplyDelete
  92. I would still go for Can if only because A) thats really the only position that we have no youngster in (besides rositter who is, what, 16?) and B) he can also play LB if needed. He's ideal for our needs.

    ReplyDelete
  93. No offense but that's terrible logic. I mean there are many, many, many, MANY players who moved from very small clubs to big clubs and became huge successes.

    ReplyDelete
  94. I think what Gerrard should get is someone with more defensive duties alongside him(at least for some games), and Gerrard Lukas just would not be right...

    ReplyDelete
  95. If we are investing heavily on Moreno or any other specialist left back then I don't see the point in buying a versatile DM. In case of not having a youngster as DM is slightly incorrect. We have Coady and Joe Allen can play there as well. Admittedly, Coady is not yet proven but unless we move on Joe Allen, I don't see any point of buying a similar lightweight player in Can.

    ReplyDelete
  96. You mean like Xabi or Mascherano or a ball winning midfielder to compete with Henderson. In that case I would go for proven EPL player like Schneiderlin and move on Joe Allen.

    ReplyDelete
  97. It is a very good idea to start bringing in a player who can take over from Gerrard who will only be around for another 2 seasons or so and there is probably a good reason why we have been interested in Can who probably is a pretty decent player when Bayern who sold him on condition that they have first option to buy him back as soon as Leverkusen receive offers for him.

    ReplyDelete
  98. Haha I like your thinking we would all love a Reus :) I have no idea what few Rodriguez would command was just purely speculating.

    ReplyDelete
  99. Yes, having said that, if we successfully buy Can then there is no room for Joe Allen. I would personally prefer Schneiderlin over Can though.

what is lfc target for next season?

IMO , it should be cl place , man u and spurs are coming strong if we get complacent we could end up 6th

    ReplyDelete
  101. Playing Lucas alongside Gerrard did not work and is why Rodgers decided to go with Gerrard and two mobile midfielders ahead of him i.e. the 1-2 midfield. As long as Gerrard is in the team it will remain the 1 with Henderson and either Allen or Coutinho alongside Hendo. We may sign another midfielder to to fight for the place in the 2.

this shows he has mixed priorities like his teeth and losing weight

rodgers when your lfc manager you should not have a life

    ReplyDelete
  106. Jamie, i would say B Rodgers should bring in M Sissoko(22) Of Newcastle instead of M Diame(26) for years younger and both in same mould as Yaya Toure(28) but M Sissoko(22) has more pace about him. And instead of playing him out wide, if B Rodgers was to play him as a CM. I Think he could anielate teams

  108. Lambert was a bit of a surprise but he did play in Southampton team who under Pochettino deployed a similar style to Rodgers.

  109. I'm really, and I mean, really happy about Lambert coming. That is what this club should be about.

  110. Latest rumour is that Luis Alberto will be going on a season long loan to Malaga.

  111. Aly Cissokho? ;)

  112. He's exactly the type of full back Brendan likes. Hs 21 so will improve in all areas of his game.. Left back for 10 years for 18 mill is a ship.. YNWA

  113. It's nice to have a strong bench but not if that weakens the team.

  114. According to Ben Smith from the BBC, Lallana has told Southampton that he wants to leave but no formal transfer request, yet.

  115. yes, BR's teeth are and always shall remain our greatest obstacle in reaching true glory. They must be stopped...

  116. Spanish, so clearly skilful and pacey.

BUT: (i) Is he tough and dirty? (ii) Can he tackle? (iii) Can he, unlike Flanno, handle a tricky winger? (iv) is he dirty?

If the answers to the above are all positive, he's a BARGAIN. Otherwise, could be another expensive foreigner a la Llori / Sahko ..

  117. Pedro,Tello and Alves=£38m

  118. I do not see what the issue is with Sakho other than him being made a scapegoat.

  119. And he'll never be seen again at LFC after that. He is done at Anfield. Total waste of money, though it's BR's fault, not his.

  120. We will have to see how it all ends. If it so happens that he is done at Anfield then at least it will not be the sorry state like we had with Aquilani so in that case i do not see Alberto as a waste of money. It would be more like nothing ventured, nothing gained..
