Liverpool are reportedly considering a summer move for Schalke rising star Max Meyer, who is often dubbed the 'new Mesut Ozil'.
According to a report in the Liverpool Echo today:
* Liverpool are planning to make a summer offer for Meyer.
* The Reds have scouted Meyer extensively over the 'the last few months', and a deal is now 'firmly on the cards'.
* As part of the proposed deal, Schalke will get a percentage of any sell-on fee plus performance-based bonus payments.
Chelsea made a €15m offer for Meyer during the January transfer window, but Liverpool now appear to be in pole position to actually pull off the deal. Some info about Meyer:
* €18m buyout clause in his contract.
* 47 apps for Schalke so far.
* 28 apps for various Germany youth teams.
* One app for the senior national team.
* 2013-14: 6 goals/3 assists in 37 apps for Schalke.
* 85% passing accuracy.
* 41 key passes.
* 2012: 3 goals during Germany's run to the U17 European Championships final.
* In the final, Holland defeated Germany on penalties, but after the game, Dutch defender Nathan Ake raved: "Meyer is their best player. He's quick and very dangerous. My coach told me to stay on him wherever he went and we'd have a better chance."
Schalke's Kevin Prince Boateng is a fan of Meyer, and in a recent interview, he raved:
“He [Meyer] is one of the best players of his age I’ve ever played with. He keeps quiet off the pitch"
Meyer is often compared to his team-mate Julian Draxler, and the youngster is not impressed with such comparisons. In a recent interview with DerWesten, he noted:
"Julian is a great footballer, but every player stands for himself, and I think such comparisons actually rather inappropriate"
When asked whether he'd leave Schalke for a 'bigger' club in the near-future, Meyer added:
"it's every player's dream to play at a bigger club, but that's so far away. I would like to help Schalke, and who knows, maybe we will grow so much that I no longer have to leave".
When it comes to physicality, the Bundesliga is arguably comparable to the Premier League, and 37 appearances (league and Champions League) for an 18-year old is impressive stuff.
Worth a bid?

no way we need proven talent
ReplyDeleteSeems like a good egg and those stats are impressive. I'd have to bow to someone with greater knowledge of Schalke though. I saw a few games of theirs last season but only really when watching (and focussing) on other sides (Dortmund, Bayern, Leverkusen, Monchengladbach and HSV).
ReplyDeleteAlso it should be noted (for people wondering how reliable this news is) that this is a story from the Metro that the Echo has only included in in its transfer gossip round-up.
True. The focus has to be on players who can improve the first team. He seems like an interesting prospect (I don't know a great deal of him) but you'd hope that any money spent on a player like this wouldn't take away from the money available for players like Lallana and Shaqiri etc.
ReplyDeleteYes I seen his video and he looks impressive, as did Aspas and Alberto on their videos,
ReplyDeletegood investment, but again a small player, what is it with brendan and small players, Borini, Aspas, Coutinho, Allen, etc etc.
As it has come from the Metro I've ordered my Meyer shirt already.
ReplyDeleteTrying to save money. Bigger player = more travel costs, more material needed for shirts etc..
ReplyDeleteAlso, Ayre can justify low-balling them on the wage front by arguing that an Iago Aspas needs less money for food than a Mamadou Sakho.
As long as his name is on the back of a Schalke shirt, I think your money is well spent.
ReplyDeleteWe've been linked to so many players it's becoming a bit boring. This lad looks like a decent player but I'll believe we're interested in him when I see him on sky sports walking into Melwood.
ReplyDeleteHe is a regular starter for a Bundesliga top 4 side, was part of the recent pre world cup training camp of one of the best German national sides of all time, is a lot cheaper and a lot younger than Lallana ... if I had to chose, I'd pick Meyer.
ReplyDeletefrom what i have heard he is a massive talent. Commentators never fail to mention about his abilities in any Schalke match.
ReplyDeletetotally agree....
ReplyDeleteRodgers wants brains over brawn but Can is quite a sturdy lad...
ReplyDeleteAnd that is where the problem will come in. Guaranteed 1st team football but have to agree that I would rather go for Meyer than Lallana.
ReplyDeleteThis boy is good both now and the future but in my view i will rather take Meyer (9m) and Shaqiri (16m) than taking lallana for 25m i don't think we need all these but it's good to have at least two of them,,, so why take overrated 25m-30m lallana when you can get better players for 15m-20m
ReplyDeleteI'll have to take your word for it.
ReplyDeleteMy comment was based on the fact that I think Lallana/Shaqiri would be trusted to come into the side straight away by Rodgers whereas I wouldn't be quite so sure Rodgers would be so quick to put Meyer in. That said, I don't know enough about the player to make a strong judgement there.
If he's the something anything I would say he is the German Raheem Sterling. With those two switching wings and Suarez and Sturridge through the middle Chelski can play 22 players behind the ball and we'd still give them a hiding. He is that good.
ReplyDeleteHmmm...that sounds good, but is it a better deal than Lallana for £30mil?
ReplyDeleteThis World Cup is a f*cking farce. How the f*ck was that a penalty?
ReplyDeleteThe good thing is: Meyer would not expect to play every game as an 18-year old. So he is a perfect back up for Coutinho or Henderson. Won't complain, can do a job, will only get better with time. And if it does not work out, there will surely be plenty of takers from the Bundesliga, while nobody would give us 25m for Lallana if we wanted to sell him.
ReplyDeleteSpain now getting exactly what they deserve. Play acting and diving hopefully will not prevail.
ReplyDelete30 million? That'll buy you the Spanish national team tomorrow morning..
ReplyDeleteDo not want to bang the drum to much but Netherlands vs Spain pretty much made my mind up why a player like Pedro Rodríguez would struggle in the EPL.
ReplyDelete18 mil for the next Mesut Ozil? sod that... lets get the next Max Meyer for 30 mil. and then we'll all come back here and wonder where it all went wrong.
ReplyDeleteworried about loius van gaal now
ReplyDeletehe could sign all thees dutch players and turn utd into great team
Oh, give over. That makes no sense whatsoever. None. Zilch.
ReplyDeleteM.Meyer might be a good pick up,but where are all these players that B.R said would fit straight into LFC first team?
ReplyDeleteNot necessarily. I'm not saying it does makes sense (in lieu of a proper argument) but he might have some dynamite reasoning.
ReplyDeleteIs emre can not meant to be the young promising player providing competition for those players? I can't see us spending €18 million on a midfielder Rodgers doesn't think ready to make an immediate impact
ReplyDeleteWe lost the league cos of inexperience in the squad , bacary off to city and fabregas and possibly costa of to Chelsea .... I think it's time we signed finished goods , we have just too many prospects in our team , the next this and the that. Let's sign the sanchezs and the Pedros and pump some experience into the team .... Alberto(next Alonso), assaidi ( Moroccan messi), Fabio borini etc. please !
ReplyDeleteno way..we already hve jordan ibe..pls don't waste money..shariqi is our best choice for the money..
ReplyDeleteeither we get Meyer and Shaqiri, or, Firmino and Parejo. i would take Firmino and Parejo. But i am against Lallana.
ReplyDeleteSome fans think we will instantly hit the big time. Last season was a freak season, our main players were on form more often then not and we had some luck with injuries. Next season has to about CL qualification and assembling a young squad that will quality for CL and push for the title for many seasons to come. Max Mayer is a quality young player, and that's the type we should be looking to bring in. Players like Meyer, Firmino, Shaqiri, Caulker, Kovacic, Matio De Sciglio, Moreno/Rodriguez, and Aleksander Mitrovic
ReplyDeleteSomeone plays football manager
ReplyDeleteWe need proven talent in our first season back in the champion league , because if we aren't careful would could easily slide back down the table .... Other teams will be way stronger this season . Meyer looks like top talent but we couldn't not afford to gamble on players every season .
