Triple-Transfer: LFC to sign exciting £60m trio within days, including 'unstoppable' £25m attacker

With Adam Lallana finally in the bag, Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers is going for a transfer hat-trick this month, with reports suggesting that two more attacking players are set to join Lallana at Anfield in the very near future.

According to the Liverpool Echo:

* Liverpool are planning a £25m offer for 'unstoppable' Benfica star Lazar Markovic.

* Rodgers is also set to sign £10m-rated Belgium star Divock Origi.

* All three deals will allegedly be completed 'within days'.

Including Lallana's £25m transfer fee (or £28m depending on the source), the total outlay for all three players will be £60m.

Despite regular protestations to the contrary, the theme here seems to be that Liverpool WILL pay over the odds for players, and in my view, all three reputed transfer fees are inflated.

Lallana

Is he really worth £13m more than Daniel Sturridge, and £9m more than Ivan Rakitic? Lallana is a good Premier League player, but he hasn't proven it at the highest level, there's no guarantee that he'll be a massive success at Liverpool. £25m is a massive fee, and I fear that his versatility will be more of a hindrance than a help.

In my view, LFC need to go into the new season with Lallana clear about his best position. With Suarez out till November, Liverpool need to hit the ground running to be in with a chance of challenging for the title, and spends the first couple of months experimenting (in a bid to find Lallana's best position), that could conceivably have a negative impact on the team. For £25m, Rodgers *should* already have Lallana's best position nailed down.

Markovic

I don't understand all the hype. What has Markovic achieved in the game to warrant a £25m transfer fee? Take last season, for example: 6 goals/0 assists in 39 appearances. Is that what £25m buys these days? Given the fact Markovic is predominantly a winger, his lack of assists is particularly concerning. Coutinho grabbed 5 goals/7 assists, and he cost only £8m. If he can't create a single goal in the Portuguese league, how is he going to fare in the superior - and tougher - Premier League?

Origi

One goal in the World Cup and all of a sudden Origi is some kind of superstar? Does anyone really believe that Rodgers monitored/scouted the 19-year old before the World Cup? It's possible, but I doubt it. Belgium have produced a couple of excellent strikers in the last few years (Lukaku/Benteke), so the odds on Origi following suit seem high, but it's still a gamble.

If Lallana, Markovic, and Origi turn out to be superstars for Liverpool, then - like Henderson - their fees will become less of an issue, but given Rodgers' pitiful 20% success rate in the transfer market, the likelihood of all three succeeding at Anfield seems slim.

Having said that, Rodgers categorically proved last season that he is a brilliant manager, and he seems intelligent enough to quickly learn from his mistakes, and hopefully that will extend to the transfer market.

  2. I personally don't buy into that Markovic story yet. The Echo is reporting that we are interested but that might just be a coordinated attempt by the club and the Echo to signal Bayern Munich that we have other options if they want too much money for Shaqiri ...

  3. One would think Jaimie K was Richard fucking Branson, listen football expert, get a job as a real journalist and stop chanting unadulterated garbage, I personally think Liverpool are going in the right direction, keep your shitty opinion to oneself!

  4. Would be very surprised if we sign Markovic. Going to cost a pretty penny.

  5. We couldnt pay 30M for Willian but pay 28M for Lallana. Same old Liverpool. We have no consistent policy and success in transfers. I just dont trust BR with transfers. BR is obsessed with getting British talents at any cost. Nothing wrong with good British talents at right price but 28M for 26 yrs old who has 3 productive years left, some investment If we had thrown 28M at Firmino, I think we would have gotten him.

  6. At the moment the moment I am just going to sit back and enjoy the ride. I honestly thought the Lallana deal was dead. When I saw the headlines that he is having a medical I was gobsmacked. I think we may be preparing for Suarez's departure.

  7. I have no confidence in BR when it comes to transfers. Allen, Borini, Aspas, Alberto, Assaidi, the list goes on. Dont see anything extra to Markovic's game for a 25M rumored offer. If he was a great player, Mourinho would not let us get him. Lallana is nothing extra. I would have have thrown that same money on Firmino and tested Hoffenheim. Managers live and die by results. Remember Salif Dioa, Diouf, Cheyrou and Kyriaokos, Aquilani.

  8. I hope the sanchez rumours are true .. but I can't see where the money will come from seing as we still need to strengthen heavily in our backline.. I can dream I guess .. if Suarez does go we better get him though .. I'd say Rodgers will go for a bit more proven champions league quality after he strengthens our depth aswell

Jaimie, sometimes your assessments make sense and other times they don't, but what consistently makes sense is that your opinionated personality is grating.

  10. 20% success rate is pretty harsh I would say. I think 25 million for markovic is too much but the price I've been hearing for the Belgian kid is 6 million and we loan him back to Lille next season which is a lot more reasonable. I've not seen much of markovic but is there any particularly credible sources saying we're in for him?

  12. 2 quotes today from Guillem Balague

“Real Madrid thought they had the player wrapped up. They thought they could go and negotiate with Liverpool this summer but things changed the moment Luis Suarez indicated his preferred choice would be Barcelona."

    and

“It’s the same with Alexis. He’s got an offer from Juventus and an offer from Liverpool but he will have to decide which one he prefers.”

So do not be surprised if Suarez is off to pastures new. Losing a player with his ability will hurt but will allow us to sign the likes of Sanchez and our other targets.

  13. Don't think we'd bd putting the word out that we're prepared to give benfica 25 million for markovic if we're trying to drive the price DOWN

  14. players shd be judged on their style of play fitting with the team.DS was not playing regularly and had failed at two top clubs. At the. time 12m was too much. Same with coutinho and his injuries. Man U £27 for Shaw!! Established players still fail. check soldado, Fellaini,Torres @ chelsea, Even Neymah has failed to match expectations, Mata,Lamela etc. So signing players is a hit/miss. If we don't sign then Liverpool lacjs ambition as in Willian,Ericksen, Soldado and the Salah. si better risk than not.

Also, doesn't "tough luck" apply to you? I didn't view 'woy hodgson''s reply as an attack on you.

Just clarifying the comment policy and to the extent it applies. Thanks.

  16. Temerity you say? After reading your posts and comment replies for a while i would say you really do come across as a know all filled with arrogance which is why you don't seem to take those who disagree with you seriously. I bet you are completely riddled with insecurities and very different during a face to face difference of opinion hence your alter ego irking people that are unfortunate enough to swap words with you. Go ahead and delete this and make up some pathetic reason why but your comment to Woy Hodgson reeks of disrespect. Tut Tut

  18. my blood boils when i hear about markovic and the fact that we may land him in all likelihood. 20 mil for a guy who has scored like 7 goals in his life. makes me wanna put my head through a brick wall just reading about it. i thought it was just over rated english youth that cost the heavens but it's getting more and more clear that it's Liverpool have to shell out more than the others even if they wanna buy a bench warmer. and barca keep nicking monsters like rakitic for chump change. SMH.

    ReplyDelete
  19. I don't see 'Woy's' comment as an attack on me, either. I'm entitled to respond the way I did if I like; his comment has nothing to do with the article, and is needlessly about me. He should stick to debating the issues, not commenting on the nature of my opinion, which is utterly irrelevant.

  20. Better we get our transfer business done in anticipation of any deal for Suarez if we can because as soon as teams know we're flush with the Suarez money, prices for players we target will increase significantly

  21. If we stay away from players whose last name starts with the letter A we should be alright!

  22. Reply to Jaimie below since I can't seem to reply on that post specifically for some reason.

    -----------------

    Ok I understand that...

So shouldn't you similarly expect woy's entitlement to respond to your article the way he responded? If you did, then isn't it your responsibility, as site admin and purveyor of said "critical realism" to either ignore his comment or counter it more meaningfully than say "life's a b*tch"?

Not trying to start a fight here. I do appreciate your site and its articles. But you may have a small blind-spot which is good to be aware of. Not a biggie. We all have them. :)

    ReplyDelete
  23. I think that's easyily over the odds for him, bit i think he will add to the squad for sure. Must say Southampton have so far played a blinder with squeezing the most from their assets (so to speak). £60m in the kitty from three players, pretty impressive. Just hope they buy well, which I'm sure they will. Good for them I say. Wish Liverpool were that firm when it comes to selling, or buying come to think of it. On the whole Liverpool are pretty useless at negotiating.

  24. Where is Sanchez???

    ReplyDelete
  25. Sanchez yes. Lallana no. I agree with you JK on the others. Don't know much about the other two but I trust your insight on them. Seems like too little accomplished for that money. What about some of the dozen or more names mentioned at this site?

    ReplyDelete
  26. Agree that Tottenham is the poster child for overspending and trying to overwhelm the inflow of players. That said, we really need to offload at least 6-7 players. Assaidi, Alberto, Coates, Reina and maybe Johnson and maybe Allen if we can get a ball hawking and winning defensive mid...

    ReplyDelete
  27. Agree with Jamie on Lallana. He is a good player. 20 million would been fair but I suppose the 5 million "being English" excess takes it toll. Along with Bournemouths 25%. But I do think he will add flair to the team.
I also agree to an extent on Markovic. Although iv seen him closely and he really is a great talent who's stats don't reflect it. If he was a youngster at any other team he would have better stats. Although 25 mill is alot, I believe Markovic can do aswell as someone like hazard.
As for Origi, I don't think it was a year ago but I know for sure Rogers and wenger were looking at him before the world cup. 11 million is a bargain. I understand ur frustrations Jamie trust me but out of the big money buys rogers hasn't a history to judge on. Yes he failed on experimental players that we have all spoken about. But he's never had the kitty to buy expensive top players. Let's have faith in him and hope these players all mix in quickly. To b honest I'd have shaqiri over Lallana and sanchez over Markovic, but all mentioned are top players. Good luck God bless Rogers in the transfer window!

  28. You have eloquently touched on a point I tried to make in an earlier article. Maybe due to me lacking in such articulation, both my comments were deleted with no explanation. I look forward to seeing one here.

    ReplyDelete
  29. It's a different discussion if we say that Liverpool won't pay "over their valuation of the player". Whatever we think of the player, how he compares to others, what a fair price would be, the valuation the buying club puts on that player could be quite different. No question that these fees are high but if Liverpool have looked extensively at the market, found the players they want based on whatever reasons and then seen what price they are willing to pay ... who's to say they have paid more than they ultimately think is a fair price? Some reports said we went straight in with a first offer for Lallana of 20 million so the additional 5 million suggests to me that final valuation is not far off what Liverpool originally guessed.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Firstly, the accusation was completely uncalled for. Secondly, implying that someone is an easily manipulated hero-worshiper, in response to a comment about a journalist's credentials, is pretty combative

    ReplyDelete
  31. I think it's very harsh of people to criticise rogers when he hasn't had the budget for big players. How can anyone (twistadee) say he always overpays and it needs to stop? Who have we broke the bank to sign under rogers that has flopped? Nobody can criticise what he pays for Lallana or Markovic until they flop. If they flop which I deeply hope they wouldn't. There's too much harsh criticism on rogers, just imagine u were talking about Chelsea. Ud have all the players u like and still had a trophy less season. So rogers decision making and squad management is next to none. With the addition of some more quality at both ends of the pitch, the days are bright for us liverpool fans and we should get behind rogers rather than over analyse everything. Yes he over payed for aspas boring etc, but im sure mr Henry will overlook that considering the fact that liverpool made the most money last year through tv rights. Rogers wasted some money yes, but he got us 2nd with 101 goals and paid his debt back 10 fold. So let's stop crying over the same old failed transfers and support him. It could b worse, u couldv been a Chelsea or man u fan Tryna justify torres, feilani etc!

  32. How do you know we will not get T Alacantra(23) Of B Munich, he is not a guaranteed starter there. We didn't want to sell L Suarez(27) but this summer due to his mad character, ways and total lack of discipline he will be sold. Southampton did not want to sell A Lallana(26) but they are, J Allen(24) and J Henderson(24) are two mobile quick but average centre midfielders. S Gerrard(34) is way past his best and keeps on making mistakes here and there as his mind is saying one thing and his body is saying another.

Whereas Chelsea have brought Fabregas(27), Man United have now brought in A Herrera(24), we need to bring a class quality centre midfielder in the 25-34M Bracket. B Munich brought T Alacantra(23) for 20M, If B Rodgers offer 25M , they may reject it but if he offers 28-32M i am sure we will get him.

And out of the three midfielders: Alacantra(23), Fabregas(27) and Herrera(24). Fabregas has more goals in his game, Herrera is a young mobile new improved X Alonso player. Where as T Alacantra(23) is a young mobile new improved Xavi in the making.

And if B Rodgers starts thinking out of the box and thinking he needs better class and quality than what we have as S Gerrard(34) is way past his best but because what we have in reserve is average. B Rodgers over played him, yet his legs are gone.

T Alacantra(23) we could build side around. And he will have 4-5 years to improve his goalscoring.

  33. Wasn't Downing a consistant performer at A Villa before we signed him? Wasn't Downing A Villa's player of the season when we signed him? A Lallana(26) is a class quality player but he is in the 15-18M Bracket. He has not done anything to prove he is 20M plus player, considering I Rakitic(26) cost Barcelona 16.2M, L Suarez(27) cost us 21.5M, D Sturridge(24) cost 12M and P Coutinho(21) cost the club 8M, He seems way over priced.

  41. Most reports I've seen show 23-25m, that is still too high but 23m is far more palatable.

  42. Ability is not the only factor in transfer fees is it

    ReplyDelete
  43. Jaimie i have not watched Markovic that much but as i heard he is highly rated and could be future super star also don't forget he is only 20yrs old
in addition he is Rodgers' type of player with pace, power, energetic and flexible

    ReplyDelete
  44. I think Lallana is a wrong deal. Liverpool is will to spend 25M on him, and not 20M on Alberto Moreno. They cldn pay 20M for Salah. Or Willian. Liverpools transfer are really crappy. In times like these im sad to be a fan. We are just not willing to pay the price. It is very unfortunate.

    ReplyDelete
  45. You forget that there has been no such thing as Champions League football for LFC since 09/10 whereas Chelsea could offer that, have shed loads more cash to spend than LFC and can offer much bigger wages than LFC too. Money and Champions League football talks...

For instance, would Alexis Sanchez even have considered LFC last season?

    ReplyDelete
  46. Your argument doesn't make sense. Liverpool didn't value Moreno at 20m, and you're whinging they didn't want to pay overs, yet you're complaining because we're spending 5 million more on Lallana...

    ReplyDelete
  47. By Sanchez i meant Congresswoman Linda Sanchez

    ReplyDelete
  48. Price is no indicator of a player's worth so can we stop with the constant 'he's worth this much or that much? You NEVER know a players worth until they've been at a club for a year or even more. Was Suarez worth £22.7m? Of course. He's worth three times that even being a disaster in terms of his behaviour. But how many honestly said he would be an £80m player when we signed him? Put your hand down at the back, you're lying! Was Hendo worth £16m? Cue choruses of derision when we bought him by some and after a year just as many if not more. But now he's developed into a vital part of our team. Would we sell him for £16m now? No chance.

So let's forget the price for a moment and ask ourselves the meaningful questions, ie can they play, can they do a job for us, will they fit into BRs style of football? I could name £15m players who would and £50m players who wouldn't on that last question which proves my point.

Is Lallana worth £25m? Well, he's a good player, we all agree there. He can certainly do a job for us down the wing, he's used to the premiership football. That last point makes him less of a gamble than a foreign player but being British always adds a premium and we do need to keep English players at the top level so is he worth buying? Absolutely. His worth will have to be weighed up in a year or so but if he has a good season, people won't worry about the price.

I don't pay the transfer fee and my ticket price is still reasonable compared to some clubs so let the money men worry about what we can afford. They have shown themselves to be astute and bringing our debts down compared to the disaster years of the two Yankee muppets

Think we will only get 2 of the 3 mentioned in your article. Lallana and Origi. Lallana is a decent player admittedly well over priced but we know English player prices are inflated and unlike many English players Lallana looks at least half comfortable in ball possession; although for the money feel we should have saved it and gone in for Firminio. Origi has been a rising star in french football and Brenda and his team would have has him looked at, as an up coming striker; from what I have seen looks decent and a sound addition that can be rotated in the team as Studge and Suarez should he stay can play every game.

Lazar we should stay away from. We need to get rid of Lucas, Johnson, Coatez, and a few others; should that happen hope we can get another comfortable on the ball CM that can defend aswel, we also need a LB worst case scenario trying to bring through Robinson which might work out if the kid has his head right.

    ReplyDelete
  50. Or could it just be that with the helpful benefit of hindsight, Coutinho Sturridge and Suarez were underpriced bargains? I enjoy it when I get to buy a TV for 50% off and I know I got a bargain but I dont then expect to buy all future TVs for 50% of their value!

  51. I always thought Xabi Alonso was a good signing.

  52. What a ridiculous way to judge a player. Buying English is bad because the England team are rubbish? In that case Ryan Giggs and George Best would've been a total waste of money at any price! And we should never have bought a Scottish player, their team is dreadful.... Why waste money on Kenny Dalglish!!!

  60. So you think A Lallana(26) is a 25-30M player? what has he done to even become a 20M player?

    A Lallana(26) is a 15-18M player nothing else

    ReplyDelete
  61. Nobody is worth anything until they do something for us on the pitch. I am therefore only interested in their skills not their price tag. I don't pay for them, I pay for tickets and shirts and stuff like that. I leave the purchases of players to the money men. Now, can AL play? Yes. Does he have something to offer us as an improving Liverpool team? Yes. Is he a positive addition to our squad? Yes. Those are the things I am interested in. If you have paid millions for shares in the club, I'll let you worry about cost of players. £20m? £25m? Means nothing to me mate, never had nor will ever have that sort of money so it utterly meaningless to me :0)

    ReplyDelete
  62. I'm with you Jamie, didn't want lallana and still don't too expensive.sort out defence, get Sanchez to show supporters and epl that we mean business, keep chewy Luis and I'll be a happy chappy.

    ReplyDelete
  63. Markovic is no different to Raheem and Cout. In fact, they are both slightly superior to him. Therefore, I don't understand that link.

I would be happy with Sanchez because I think he's not only a goal getter but he does drop and assist (like Suarez) when a bit of creative build-up is required. He's also tenacious and helps with pressing.

I though the focus after Lallana (not overly thrilled about his signing by the way) would be on the LB and we will show ambition by going after Rodriguez but the talk has turned towards other offensive targets again. I worry about our team balance because even the offensive targets should be about left-footed wingers or attackers a la Griezmann and Shaqiri. No?

    ReplyDelete
  64. SPOT on mate... why or why to "supporters" of a club care/worry/debate about how much the "owners" of a club pay for a particular player/asset-that is their business. Quite frankly i couldnt care less... I love watching Liverpool PLAY football - and as supporters that is what we do and we want our team playing and winning ..............
To get caught up in HOW much the Owners are paying for a particular player tells me some people have precious little else in life to do with their time.. Simply Get a Life folks...... other more important things to do that you can use your valuable mins each day on that worrying about how much each player costs and if they were worth it .... please!

    ReplyDelete
  71. I agree completely. Lallana is not worth that sort of money if money is an issue (as in all teams bar utd, chel and city). Sanchez for 30 or lallana for 28? well, no contest. And rakitic looks an absolute steal! As for Markovic, ye, I don't get it either and 8mil for origi who has scored 6 ligue 1 goals in 40 odd appearances, its a gamble but its not a lot for a 19 year old who has had a good world cup so far. Going back to lallana, yes, he could end up playing all over the place which means we paid 28mil for a utility player, not good. That being said, I like him, he works hard and can play I just cant compare him to sanchez for roughly the same fee. But afterall this, we cant really win the league without el pistolero, he adds way more than any 3 players we buy to replace him and if him being suspended till end of oct means he satys then ill take him for 2/3 a season over selling him and getting nothing.

    ReplyDelete
  72. England Failing this time has more to do with Hodgson being a mid table manager than anything...

    ReplyDelete
  73. And also I see none of us are moaning at the potential for £80m for Suarez. When he only can contribute to 3/4 of the seasons. Yet lallana we will get a quality player for all the season and at a 1/4 of that price. Does that sound better price now.

    ReplyDelete
  74. Have to agree with Orme, the England team failure,in my honest opinion, was down to the fact Hodgson just had no clue.

    ReplyDelete
  75. Where do you get the idea that we couldn't pay for Willian? From what I understood we were willing to match the same fee put forward by Spurs and Chelsea.

  86. So weren't embarrassed by the Andy Carrol purchase? Remember where Hicks. & Gillett almost took the club. I get where you're coming from but surely each fan SHOULD be concerned about the financial stability of the club. I want LFC to still be around for my children, their children & so on!

  87. I keep hearing people say it's the owners that pay for lallana and every other rubbish transfer Rodgers has put through the past year and a half he has been with Liverpool, and if we're being honest, there have been lot of duds. Joe Allen(15m), Luis Alberto(6.8m), Fabio Borini(12m), Iago Aspas(7m?), the list is endless. Rodgers does NOT have a stellar record in the transfer market. When roughly 80% of your purchases end up being moved on a year or two later , I think its fair to say with the few exceptions (sturridge and coutinho coming to mind), that Rodgers has pissed away the money the board have given him. Granted, he is an excellent man manager and this has compensated for the complete drivel he's brought into the club this past year and a half. That being said, when supporters say "well it's not my money they're spending, it's the owners'", what people don't seem to understand is that some of that outlay is directly from supporters like you and I who spend up to 60 quid on just a single match ticket. Add on the 80 quid for the shirt (which for some uncontemplatable reason HAS to fucking change every year ? what was soo wrong with last years shirt, has it suddenly gone out of fashion???), the banners and scarves, the european nights, the matchday fish n chips and accumulate that over the thousands of supporters doing the same year in year out. What you realise is that even though this is only a fraction of LFC's gross income, the cash being overspent on players like lallana (26m, surely your having a laugh), 15 m for allen ??? is money being wasted. And when the club's owners look for new revenue streams considering they've pissed away their warchest on players not fit to shine fucking shoes, where do they turn? Well that's when you and I, the supporters, end up paying through the nose for matchday tickets. LFC is a business and as much as you like to think of them as a very financially separate entity from you, being fans, they do have a hand in our pockets ! And Jamie K, grow the fuck up mate, life's a bitch to everyone, if your going to blog and share your opinion with the whole world, be ready for criticism. Everyone's entitled to an opinion, stop slating comments even if they are remotely personal. Like russel would say....Be a Man !, oh and your mums a whore !!!!!!!!! jokes, jokes, but but seriously stop this "well its not my money nonsense", because it fkin is!

  88. Ultimately lallana is a risk because we don't know if he can replicate his one good season in the premier league and for the price, quite frankly he is under pressure already. Markovic also hasn't done much really. At least with a younger player you can understand paying for potential. Lallana at 26 should be hitting his peak and maybe he is? Who knows. He could excel or not. Time will tell. Really would be excited to see players like Sanchez and Vidal in the team. They'd cost the best part of £55M I'm sure. But at least they're proven quality. Just watching Columbia game- James Rodriguez star of the show. Have we ever been linked to him? Another young talent with loads of potential

  90. I saw three Benfica games last season. All of them were goalless. All of them were bloody boring. I can't even remember who this guy was. They have great defenders and no attackers at all. Looks like an incredible waste of money.
