Title Race: City in control, but is this 25-year old miracle a good omen for LFC?

Manchester City's 3-2 win over Everton is a mini-disaster for Liverpool, but I remain convinced that LFC will ultimately lift the title at the end of the season. One thing's for sure, to stand a fighting chance, the Reds need to score a bucketload of goals in the next two games, and with Crystal Palace next, Brendan Rodgers' team should draw some inspiration from the club's last title-winning campaign.

12th September 1989. Crystal Palace arrived at Anfield, completely unaware that they were about to be taught the mother of all footballing lessons.

The Reds put on a miraculous display of sublime attacking football and absolutely hammered Palace 9-0, a scoreline that will be most welcome at Selhurst Park on Monday :-)

The chances of Liverpool delivering a repeat performance are, admittedly, slim, but you never know. Even with City in the driving seat, the Reds still have time to reduce the goal-difference, and a big win against Palace is the first step to achieving that.

I choose to see this as an omen: LFC beat Palace 9-0 in the club's last title-winning campaign. Time to do it again.

Yes, I know it's a far-fetched possibility (!), but the players need to go into the game believing it can be done. Any hint of self-doubt, or lack of belief, and the title really will be lost.

  2. Yawn......and if City beat Villa 4 - 0.

  3. I'm with Jamie, if we believe it we can achieve it!!

  4. I think West Ham could be a nervous game for them. City look edgey at home sometimes. Especially if we can see out this Crystal Palace game. They will be playing at the same time and may see it as their turn to miss out on the final day.
Whoever knows with Aston Villa. They drew with us at home so why not?

  5. Hoping for an upset from Villians or Hammers (obviously) but I really do think it won't be a walk in the park. I'd take our schedule over City's anyday. If Big Andy can get his game on, city better watch out.

  6. What are you on about? I'm often optimistic about LFC. It's a total myth that I'm not. Regular readers will confirm that I've enthusiastically championed Rodgers from day 1.

  7. I also think in a way if things had been different today with city dropping points we might have been under extra preesure against crystal palace in astrange way. I like the prospect of city having on paper a harder game on the last day. If we could get 2 or 3 up quickly against newcastle and west ham start to get Iin city faces we have a decent chance. Come to think of itthis is all certain to happen and the title is coming home. Excellent.

  8. I think its time for you and every of us to stop dreaming and having nonsense hopes. City is nine goals ahead of us, so if we win nine nil were equal and still city with a game in hand, probably will score four five vs villa, so basically we have to win like 15-0 to lead the race. I gave in already, gerrard did the impossible and thats it. Miracles like that do happen but once in hundred years probably!

Everton fans are a disgrace. What a disgusting atmosphere today. And they are happy because Gerrard so calles ruined his and LFC's chances for a title. What an ignorant club.

  10. What were you thinking man? You really trusted martinez and osman words? Sure they always was going to go and lose it, just watch the goals they conceded, especially the third one, 100% on purpose. We would of done the same I guess, cant expect them to make us a that big favor, only gerrard to blame for this none else, tragic way to lose it at the end, extremely unlucky club we are.

  11. It's still on. I am certain city will choke in one of those 2 games. My only worry is us against crystal palace. It would not surprise me in the slighest if we draw at palace but city draw one of these games.

  12. How funny would it be if Carroll won us the league. I think we be hastily adding a post transfer clause to fill them in for the rest of 35m if that happens.

  13. I call upon my Lord Jesus, believing that he will give us the title...I don't care how it happens.....as long as on May 11th at the final whistle we end up being champions

I was hoping for the best but deep down I knew they would bend over for City, just as long we don't win it. Indeed, we have been unlucky... We were so close. Maybe next year ;)

  15. Yeah but ya lost the league to The Arsenal in 89 so your omen is bollocks.

  16. Don'tbe so ignorant this was 89-90 not 88-89

  17. There are still two games to go. Every time there's a close end to the season, it throws up a surprise result or two. We might lose to Palace on Monday and still win the league if City draw their two last games; hell, Chelsea could still win it. It's still wide open.

  18. I still believe we'll do it. Nothing is a forgone conclusion besides, city with their £300m+ assembled team is being pushed all the way by us. Have hope n remain calm, let's win and win big. YNWA

  19. What would be funny would be if west ham got a draw. And Arsenal lost their last two games which meant a point today would have put the bitter blues into the Champions League.

Only Barkley and maybe Naismith showed any real appetite for the game, Howard was a disgrace, watch as Dzecko is about to head the ball, he's standing two feet from the post, lets Aguero score easily at his near post and generally made it easy for City.

It"s unlikely, but imagine a Toffee fan looking back at that and realising they could have made it into the top 4? Nobody will convince me that if they needed a point to get top 4 that today's performance would have been so lethargic.

  20. aguero injured and dzeko injured, but FFS everton! even a draw would have done!

  21. Li'poos team are all 'home-grown' of course..... The only reason you didn't fail FFP this year is cos you weren't in Europe so your finances weren't tested, but still you gibber on about how much other teams spend. £35,000,000 + wages + agents fees for Andy Carroll FFS! Glass houses and piles of rocks anyone?

  22. Longshot indeed, but I will bet on a high scoreline - given that there's nothing to gain by playing safe, and nothing to lose by going for it. Liverpool will go for the jugular, and try and get a high scoreline.

I think the reality check came in last week, and efforts won't be so frantic as they were with chelsea. A methodical, surgical killing of the game will do - like dexter.

9-0 would be nice, odds about 500-1, i'll take that.

If everyone is up for it, it could go that way, maybe not 9-0, but 6-0 is not impossible - a little extra magic from Suarez, Sturridge fit, Coutinho and Raheem focused. Will definitely be entertaining - objective will not be to merely win, but destroy!

    ReplyDelete
  23. Well...9-0 is about what it is going to take to keep us in the hunt.

I'm with you, Jaimie. Big wins against Palace and Newcastle are a must even though it is going to take all of BR's motivational mojo to get the team firing on all cylinders after that demoralising loss.

But how good a piece of business will it be if Andy Carroll scores the winner at the Ethiad next Sunday? (I know, I know. There's more chance of Liverpool scoring 9 goals against Palace, but let's tempt fate shall we.)

  25. Beat palace 4-0 and stick 8 past Newcastle on the last day of the season. That's my pipedream

    ReplyDelete
  26. To be fair had it not been for a great save from hart it would've finished 3-3 and we'd all be singing their praises for being so professional

  27. Love this article go Jaimie...naysayers out....the Fat Lady is still in the changing room she hasn't sung yet.

  28. Man Shitty didn't look that convincing vs Everton they could have a wobble left in them yet. If it was Manure and Fergie in that position you could give up hope but it's not. I think they have a wobble in them yet.

  29. absolute rubbish man. Everton throw the game so we won't win the title. What are you drinking. They have a chance of being in Europe they aren't gonna throw anything

  30. At 30 yrs old, I was a child when lfc last won the league, I have to say that this season has been the most exciting season as a lfc fan for a long time.the style, class, and flair our beloved team have shown on the pitch has been a joy to watch.I sincerely believe that we are watching this team grow into future champions whether it be next wk or next season. For a small relatively young squad, haven't they done well, I'm so proud of my team and to be a Liverpool fan. Whatever happens on the last day of the season, thank you to the lfc squad for some great football and results, you've done yourselves proud, and thank you Brendan for a fantastic job of managing to bring back the style and flair to the football from the red men.YNWA

  31. Nigh on impossible to do it against a Pulis team.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Careful. Have you thought about us throwing the kitchen sink at it and leaving ourselves open - similar to that aston villa match - falling a couple of goals behind and then only managing to clawback a draw. And then, wait for it, looking on in dismay as city draw against villa or hammers. Gutted.
I think if we get in the position to score a lot of goals then let's try to take them but making that the primary goal could backfire. I would be much happier hanging in their and watching what unfolds. We only have to think back 2 years to see what can happen. They escaped that time; but maybe not this.

  33. But dw, west ham will get their 19th century on.

  34. The sales of Torres and Ryan babel paid for both Carroll and Suarez in the January 2011 transfer window.

Yes, LFC have made losses. Writing of plans for a stadium that was never built etc. Now that were back in the CL our revenue will increase and the next financial results will probably see us breaking even.

At least we did not cheat by getting a family member sponsorship to rename our stadium.

    ReplyDelete
  35. These are the sort of strange events that can happen in football

    ReplyDelete
  36. He has a point we are still big spenders maybe not as big as some but still well up there,

I am not sure any football club can claim the moral high ground, us included. It has a murky side - like most business'

    ReplyDelete
  37. If a club is building a stadium the costs are actually not counted under FFP.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Agree I can't see us getting more than 8

.But then knowing us it would be Palace 7 Liverpool 8 :-)

    ReplyDelete
  39. You are quite correct but if we wanted to rename that stadium then we cannot ask one of FSG's family members to sponsor the deal. It is called conflict of interest.

    ReplyDelete
  40. You need to do your homework and while your at it get your club to stop cheating youre a disgrace!!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  41. Let's just hope that no Man City fans are also calling on their Lord Jesus or similar......

    ReplyDelete
  42. That's where the methodical part comes in - everyone will be sensitized from leaving things to open at the back from last game. If the team is focused, they can do it, whithout it backfiring.

    ReplyDelete
  43. My hope is in the idea that they have to play 3 games in 8 days at this point in the season. Everton is a good team, so Man City should have had issues with them.

The main concerns I have are that City is so deep in quality and that they are home for both games.

All I ask at this point is to be alive when Sunday comes around. Whatever happens at that point, so be it. And as long as we win tomorrow, we'll be alive on Sunday.

    ReplyDelete
  44. I'm not positive, but isn't the 2nd tie-breaker after goal difference goals scored? If we can just tie up that goal difference with 2 big wins (not at all out of the question) we'll get em on goals scored.

    ReplyDelete
  45. i really feel like chelsea is going to make up that 19 goal difference next weekend. its theirs to lose ;-)

    ReplyDelete
  46. If players do not believe they can score at least 15 goals in next two they should all be sold.

    ReplyDelete
  47. We would not. Check how Dalglish won the title on Anfield with Blackburn.
