Euro Shock: LFC to face one of six top clubs in CL group of death. Early Exit?

After four years in the European wilderness, Liverpool are finally back in the Champions League, and the prospect of mixing it with the best next season is massively exciting for all Reds fans. It's not all wine and roses, though - after ending in up in the third pot of seeds, LFC potentially face a group of death in the club's first year back in the competition.

According to ESPN today, Liverpool 'are now certain to be in the third pot of seeds', and will 'definitely' be drawn against one of the following:

* Real Madrid
* Barcelona
* Bayern Munich
* Benfica
* Atletico Madrid
* FC Porto

If Liverpool are on the receiving end of an 'unforgiving draw', Brendan Rodgers' team could conceivably face a group consisting of Real Madrid, Borussia Dortmund, and Roma (!)

Some may be dismayed by the possibility of that particular group of death, but I say bring it on. I personally prefer it when LFC are up against tougher teams; it's much more of a challenge, and far more exciting than playing the likes of FC Basel.

Of course, there's an increased risk of exiting the tournament early, but so what? Why miss out on prestige games against Real Madrid, Barcelona, or Bayern Munich?

  1. I agree. These teams will not park any buses so we always have a good chance whoever ends up in our group.

  2. Nobody will fancy playing us either..

  3. Early Exit?? Wow! What was the point of making to the CL??

    ReplyDelete
  4. Thats why we are in the CL to play these teams!, NO team will wanna play Liverpool!, bring them on! were gonna win the group!!!!.

  5. I said 'increased risk' of an early exit; I didn't say LFC would be knocked out early.

  6. After waiting so long for champions league footy I will be more than happy to watch us in a tough group.thats what the champions league is all about

    ReplyDelete
  7. I think all the players will be looking forward to playing the likes of Real and Bayern..if you're scared of getting a hard draw you shouldn't be in the competition

  8. I agree on the big European nights at Anfield we can take on anyone so bring it on. The top teams won't sit back against us and I think we stand the best chance of any English club to make it out of such a group. I may regret saying this but if we carry on as last season and progress a bit more we stand every chance.

    ReplyDelete
  9. I hope we get in a top quality group.
LFC play better against top opponents in my opinion and as JK said i wanna see some prestige games.

  10. Anyone who doesn't want to play the best isn't getting into the spirit, it's what makes it so exciting and it's something I used to take for granted until we came 7th. By the way anyone know which pot utd is in?

  11. I remember thinking when Atletico played Barca, that we could beat both of these teams. We move the ball around quicker. Atletico would be the more difficult of the two as they're defensively better but Barca defend like us. Coutinho and Stevie would pick holes in that defence all day long. Of course, Messi might be a problem!

No they're not in the pot, They're on the shit-heap though :)

  13. Funny how a lot of people seem to think we would roll over top teams and that they will fear us at Anfield, just a reminder : we took 3 goals in 15 minutes against crystal palace and barely won the last game of the season against a Newcastle team who have stop playing football 3 monhts ago...

We don't have a defence and against a well organised team like chelsea (the team that got outplayed by atletico) we were looking weak offensively so don't get ahead of ourselves like when we tought we won the league before we even played the games...

i'm confident we can do some great things next year but only if we can leak less goal otherwise this champions league will end up in tears.

  14. I've always thought Johnson does better against quicker wingers. I think it gives him less time to dick around. Did quite well against Bale for example, I thought.

I also remember him getting skinned by 35-year-old Danny Murphy too.

  15. Early exit is a bit of a misleading term. I mean, yes that is what it literally is, but say we draw both of the Madrid teams and get 3rd in the group. Is it any less shameful than losing to one of them in the semi or quarter finals if we just face the basel's and Celtics of the tournament up until then? (no offense of course to any of the basel and celtic fans)

    ReplyDelete
  16. Slipperie_Slope2:11 am, May 20, 2014

Whilst I do take your point that our defence is leaky and needs to be worked on, anyone who's watched 15 minutes of Liverpool this year realises that. But I think you also need a reminder.

    Liv 1 Man Utd 0
    Liv 5 Spurs 0
    Liv 4 Eve 0
    Liv 5 Ars 1

    Liv 3 Man Utd 0
    Liv 4 Spurs 0
    Liv 3 Man City 2

There were other negatives bar the ones you pointed out (Loss to Soton, Two losses to Chels, Draw with Villa) but it was a season with way more positives than negatives. So I don't see why we shouldn't be confident at home against any team in the world. No team comes to Anfield and are favourites.

And the point has been made already, but none of those teams above will ever set up like Chelsea did against us. And that game was only the second time we hadn't scored last season, on April 27th, the first time was on September 21st. So I don't see how we could ever have been considered weak offensively.
    Weak Tactically maybe.

    ReplyDelete
  18. without either Sturridge or Suarez it's easy for experienced team to stop us, it's naive to think that we're already the finish article that's my point, the season was really great but except chelsea other english team have been poor.

Arsenal out by bayern without breaking any sweat, city out by one of the weakest barcelona i've seen for a while, let's not forget our team have not been tested against european team and have little experience.

    ReplyDelete
  19. With defense issues sorted during the summer, more experienced midfield and the best strike force in epl, bring it on. Our boys will be hungry to impress and prove that this season was no fluke. C'mon Brendan get it sorted in this transfer window, we made em shake with fright in the epl this year lets make the rest of Europe sh*t themselves too.

    ReplyDelete
  20. At last a realistic post.

    ReplyDelete
  21. That's what makes it exciting. I personally believe we can make it to the quarterfinals. However all will be based on the summer transfers. If we get it right we will make a lot of noise in Europe and at home!

    ReplyDelete
  22. We can't draw the two Madrid teams. Maybe with Bilboa if they qualify. First time back and it will be hard. Transfers will determine how our season goes.

    ReplyDelete
  23. When i see some people think we will get the possession against bayern and barcelona it make me think it'll end in tears... glad to see someone realising EPL doesn't mean anything (1 english team in QF seems to have been forgotten)

    ReplyDelete
  24. I realize that now, but my argument still stands...what if we draw two other top teams... And yes I completely agree with your last sentence :D

    ReplyDelete
  25. They will be worried of us also!

    ReplyDelete
  26. Jaimie, what do you think of other teams are thinking about Liverpool? Ohh..here come the small team from England..the previous winner of 5 UCL....easy meat..is that what the other teams are thinking? Be positive..although Glenn Johnson present in the team is a scarier thought.

Not only Liverpool in dire street... All the giants might feel uneasy as they will want to avoid the most exciting attacks in Europe... So get exciting and bring them on... YNWA

  28. I hope we draw them all in the same group.

Not only are we going to the Bernabéu, Jamie Kanwar, we're going to Camp Nou and the Allianz and the Vicente Calderon and the Estadio da Luz and the Estadio do Dragao, and we're going to the Juventus Stadium and the Olimpico and the Signal Iduna.... And we're going to the Parc des Princes and De Kuip and the Amsterdam ArenA and San Mames, and then we're going to the Olympiastadion, to take back the European Cup!

    Yeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  29. It looks to me that both will be rebuilding so we shouldn't be afraid of either.

    ReplyDelete
  30. That's OK all we have to do is beat all round us and send out a message loud and clear that Liverpool are back in town ..simple..

    ReplyDelete
  31. You enter the Champions League to play against Europe's elite teams. Bring them on!

    ReplyDelete
  32. I think people are getting carried away with out wonderful season. We might be good, but we are not 'bring on the best in Europe anyday anytime' good. Not yet at least. I for one would rather play basel and benfica in the group stage and sneak into the second round, than play Madrid and atletico and end up enduring the Europa league. But what do i know...

    ReplyDelete
  33. Don't worry the attitude against these teams will be different, I expect Liverpool to race through these teams as they always have been doing in the CL :) Do you ever go to think how hungry these lads might be after so many years out of the competition ???

    ReplyDelete
  34. TacticalGenius8:45 am, May 20, 2014

I want a group of real Madrid, juventus, Liverpool and celtic. Genuinely think we'll be able to top that group, stadiums sold out, more chance of an enjoyable game and it would massively increase our euro ranking. If we face relatively poor teams, do so again in the knockouts and reach the quarter finals, we wont actually increase our euro ranking much so despite going far, we'll be in pot 3 again the year after, pot 2 at a push. We all know we can up it a notch v the big teams, so why not want to face "powerhouses" who trade blow for blow, come out on top and be more or less guaranteed of increased rank the year after whilst enjoying the games we play. booyaka!!

    ReplyDelete
  35. Exactly :)
And watching us play this year, and probably with some more attacking threats and defensive stability, we'll be a hell of a team next year :)

    ReplyDelete
  36. I don't care who they play. I will just be happy to see them in the CL again.

    ReplyDelete
  37. I hope we draw them all in the same game, to be played on the slopes of Mount Olympus for a week.

    ReplyDelete
  38. 3 words: BRING IT ON!!!

  39. Atletico might be a bit bus parky.

  40. If it is not on the slopes of an active volcano I'm not interested. Any chance of some armored bears as well?

    ReplyDelete
  41. Listen, last seasons we smashes Arsenal, did the double over Man United, beat the champions so why on earth would we need to worry about who we'll play in the Champions League. If we're in it to win it we'll face strong opposition sooner or later. So let them worry about us. We'll take the game to whoever it is we're playing and they will all have to come to fortress Anfield. Personally, I HOPE we'll get Real or Bayern so we can show them right away who's boss!

    ReplyDelete
  42. Bring it the *%&^ on! I totally agree. We're not in the CL to make up numbers or get easy games. The whole point is to play against the best and we should welcome that. We should have every confidence of getting a result at home against the best in Europe and those teams will be nervous about coming to Anfield.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Slipperie_Slope11:18 am, May 20, 2014

Never once said we were the finished article. But you highlight two matches in a 38 game season and then compare us to teams like Barca/ Real/ Bayern/ City/ Athletico as they were infallible.
There are no perfect teams. We drew with Palace and struggled to beat Newcastle.
Barca drew with Elche and Getafe
Madrid drew with Valladolid and Valencia.
Man City drew with Sunderland and Norwich.
Bayern couldn't get over the line in Cl (and are playing in the most uncompetitive league in the world right now)
Even Athletico started their campaign with two draws and a loss.

So your use of results in two games over a season to suggest we are not capable of beating any of these teams is a ridiculous argument.

We are not the finished article no.
But I would say we are better than Levante, Sevilla, Bilbao, Hannover or Cardiff. All of which have beaten these super powers over the season.

So no I don't think any team is superior in a one off game in Anfield. What you read in the press etc will have you believe that these are the greatest teams the world have ever seen, until they lose. Four years ago there would never be anyone to challenge Barcelona ever again, three years ago it was Real, Two years ago it was Bayern, this year it's Athletico.
Football is fickle, so I wouldn't write off The Premier League just yet!

Bring them teams on. It's what being the CL is about. OK it might mean it become more difficult to get through the group, so what!!!; our priority next season should be another top 4 finish and adding real quality to the squad so we can compete for the top 4 and the title for many years to come. As last season we were a bit lucky that our top players did not get injured at the same time and that we had 2 strikers playing their A game more often then not. I don't know the seeding but would like, Real Madrid, Monaco, Zenit, Besiktas.

  46. His talent does not compensate £25 million. Simple as! Suarez was bought for £22 million by the way. says it all really. Overpriced/Overhyped.

    ReplyDelete
  47. And why do you have these doubts? He is a 20 year old who was sent to adapt to another country and develop. He has 3 goals and 7 assists in his loan spell where he has not started every game. I say that is an accomplished young star who has got a very bright future. Be realistic about the term 'shining very brightly'.

    ReplyDelete
  48. This isn't football manager mate. You cant just change almost half the squad and expect them to click and challenge for the title again. Just ask Tottenham! Use your heads people. And how do you know that these clubs will willingly sell their stars? And the fact that we will be able to cherry pick them? There's a reason you aren't a manager of a football club mate.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Isn't that why it's called the 'Champions League?' Looking forward to it.

    ReplyDelete
  50. No one here is paying the bill, why do people care?

    ReplyDelete
  51. Yes...Rakitic please and then I wouldn't be all squirmy about parting with 25M.

    ReplyDelete
  52. It is the not starting part that bothers me. If he were really a step up for Almeria he would have been playing more. It's not like they had a lot to choose from.

    ReplyDelete
  53. We were always going to get a group of death after missing out four years there. I was hoping we would be in pot two at least so we could face just one world class team but now we will face two of them. Pot one and two are the strongest teams out there and we will face two of them definitely, just like man city is doing every year facing bayern real etc. We probably wont pass the group but we should really try and give a go, and most important improve this team asap, so many new faces needed here and so many need to leave.

    ReplyDelete
  54. On another note, why 'euro shock'? We always knew we'd get a tough group!

    ReplyDelete
  55. On a good day id fancy our chances with ANY of them teams.

    ReplyDelete
  56. Konoplyanka would be a better buy at £15 million, with Shaqiri/Sanchez on the right.

    ReplyDelete
  57. What there to be afraid of, we and Bayern are the 3rd most successful club in Europe, after Madrid and AC. The rest of the 5 are just numbers!

    ReplyDelete
  58. A few million pounds? that's a lot of money! but if you say it fast, then it's not so bad.

    ReplyDelete
  59. Yes very true I would happy with either one of them. I will be surprised if increase our bid to beyond 20 mil as that enters Suarez's price range.

    ReplyDelete
  60. So, you'd keep Johnson? Oh dear.

  61. Slipperie_Slope2:18 pm, May 20, 2014

Athletico Madrid sold their best player in Falcao last season and have Won the Spanish League, and are in the final of the Champions league. Spurs problem was not that they sold Bale (you lose one player you adapt) it's that they changed the whole core of their team, which is what you are suggesting. You will NEVER, and I mean NEVER, see that many wholesale changes by any top club in one window. And if you think you will, or that it could possibly be a good thing, then I'm sorry but I couldn't possibly agree with that.

You don't need to remind me of the fact that Rodgers has made changes to the club, I'm very aware of that. 17 changes. What I do feel I need to remind you of though is that was 17 outgoings over the space of 4 transfer windows. What you're suggesting is we make 20-23 changes in one window??????
Sorry pal but NEVER goin to happen.

That's a whole new team you're suggesting. We can only play 11 players.
    Madness

    ReplyDelete
  62. Why Lallana? He's 27 and no one outside Southampton had heard of him
untill this year, where's he been between say 19 and 26? Played great for first half of season and one good performance for England, petered out since then. £10 million, plus performance related add ons, there's better, probably cheaper options out there.

    ReplyDelete
  63. Slipperie_Slope2:19 pm, May 20, 2014

    Or else some good trolling.
Can't believe I'm biting on this.

    ReplyDelete
  64. Not too concerned about the Champions League next season, i'd be more concerned about qualifying for it again next year. Manure with LVG will buy top players and Arsenal won't be so unlucky with injuries next year, will add too, City and Chelsea will also be there, it's important Rodgers get some big players in the summer, (no more crappy 6-7 million pound flops) so we're no one season wonders.

    ReplyDelete
  65. We may have come up short in the last two games of the season, but if we took the performances against Arsenal ,manure, spurs and the Bitters into any Cl games, no probs.

Mate, just tell him to switch his console off and join the real world.
He's convinced we can change over a dozen players and integrate them smoothly even after a shortened preseason following the WC.
Someone who genuinely thinks that cannot be reasoned with.....

    ReplyDelete
  67. 4 Transfer windows: You mean 3. There were no outs or ins during January.

How many players out of the 13 named contributed to club this season? How many were out on loan? Apart from L Leiva(27) and J Allen(24) , the other 9 players are just on the books.

We have so much dead wood/ average players at club that have just been getting good salaries sitting on bench or at a next club, yet offering the club that pays their wage rarely nothing.

    What core of our team:

The core of our team is Mignolet, Skrtel, Johnson, Agger, Sakho, Enrique, Flannagan, Gerrard, Henderson,Allen, Lucas, Sterling, Sturridge and Suarez. Those players are the Core

The others mentioned are just there to make the numbers

    ReplyDelete
  68. One i do not play computer games, two most of the players mentioned are bench warmers or were out on loan. So it would not make a difference, its like they weren't there anyway.

L Leiva(27) and J Allen(24) are apart of core, but were both out injured for a long time over season.

And if they are replaced by better players: Y M'Vila(23) Of Rubin Kazan and I Rakitic(25) Of Seville then they will not be missed for too long.

Our bench / our squad is the reason we did not win league, it is why Man City won the league.

Out of 25 man squad, we have 14 class good players, but if more than 3 are out together our team struggles. And the people on bench offer very little to make difference to side when they do come on

    ReplyDelete
  69. Is Johnson(29) better than Flannagan(21)? Yes
is Johnson (29) better than Kelly(23)? Yes
Is Johnson (29) better than Wisdom(20)? Yes

So obviously i would keep G Johnson(29) as he is the best of what we have, that is why B Rodgers wants to keep him. G Johnson(29) makes more mistakes than any defender in our side, but plays week in week out as what we have in reserve is not as good. B Rodgers is not stupid, if he had better. G Johnson(29) would warm the bench or be shipped out.

N Clyne(23) Of Southampton is a very good full back and is better defensively than G Johnson(29) and in next year or two will be Englands number 1 right back.

    ReplyDelete
  70. I know its not football manager at all.

Apart from L Leiva(27) and J Allen(24) who actually contributed to club's success even though both of them were out injured for a considerable amount of time.

The other players mentioned in list to be shipped out? what did they do for club last season? did they change any games for the better when they came off bench?
When any of our core players were out injured did they step in and fill the void?

Most of the players mentioned will not be missed as its like they are not there anyway.

    ReplyDelete
  71. We already have a strong 14 players if fully fit and injury free, we have 10 dead wood average / injury prone players and one world class player that manager know longer wants at club.

We have 4 competitions next year, so we need better players in. We had 3 competitions last season, Yet what did the 11 players i have said who need to be shipped out , what competition did any of them stand up and get counted?

When did any of them push B Rodgers into using them in the league due to their ability and performances in cups?

Out of the 11 players mentioned:

The ones who could stay in squad are P Reina, L Leiva, J Allen and F Borini.

But L Leiva(27) is not mobile or quick enough and does not suit the system , He is wanted in Italy and no longer wants to be a squad player.

P Reina(31) is still world class but he has fallen out with B Rodgers and due to his astronomical weekly wages he will be sold this summer.

J Allen(24) needs to offer club more in attack or defence to even warrant being first teamer, he is neat passer of ball but he is too predictable and struggles to dominate the centre of the park against the low clubs in premiership with some average centre midfield players. Let alone against some of the best midfielders in European football next season

F Borini(22) whenever he played for club, he looked lost like headless chicken. Is he good enough back up for Sturridge or Suarez? Doubt it, but he does have goals in him. Its just can he score against the best defenders, best defences in european football? Who knows?

But the other 7 players should definately be shipped out this summer and replaced by at least 7 class quality players.

  75. Yep. It is the leadership that appeals to me most of all to be honest. Shows he is a player ready for the top level (or maybe one of those players who thrives on being the big fish in a relatively small pond, but I think it is the former).

I think, Bale aside, he is the only person to be in double figures for goals AND assists in La Liga.

    ReplyDelete
  76. Unfortunately, too many clubs are asking greedy money for their players. Only Man-U, ManCity and Chelsea are likely to fall for it because they are rich clubs and can easily be screwed for money. The upside for them is, however, they know that money can purchase victory.

    ReplyDelete
  79. He could turn out to be a very good purchase at the 10-12 million mark but you would be hard pushed to justify 20 million given the quality player available to you for half that.

    ReplyDelete
  80. if lallana is our priority signing, then i have missed something. After the season we have just had,i would think that a DM like carvallho or fernando,as well as a left back would be our most pressing areas to strengthen, and i would also be chasing rakitic hard as he has the qualities we need to take us to the next level. My opinion is that we have enough creative forward players and this area should only be strengthened once the back half is sorted.I am baffled as to why we are chasing offensive players after the season we have just had and the amount of goals we shipped.doesnt make sense.

    ReplyDelete
  81. We definitely could get a tough draw but not all the 3rd seeds got horrendous draws last time out

On paper it can look strong, and being 3rd seeds could lead to a group of death scenario, but look at some of the teams from last year...... A lot of duds

Group A: Manchester United, Shakhtar Donetsk, Bayer Leverkusen, Real Sociedad.

Group B: Real Madrid, Juventus, Galatasaray, FC Copenhagen.

Group C: PSG, Benfica, Olympiakos, Anderlecht.

Group D: Bayern Munich, CSKA Moscow, Manchester City, FC Viktoria Plzen.

Group E: Chelsea, Schalke, FC Basel, Steaua Bucharest.

Group F: Arsenal, Marseille, Borussia Dortmund, Napoli.

Group G: Porto, Atlético Madrid, Zenit St Petersburg, Austria Vienna.

Group H: Barcelona, Milan, Ajax, Celtic

Also, another interesting thing about CL this year is that the teamsthat were strolling their domestic leagues performed poorly at latter stages.

I remember watching Man Utd v Bayern and thinking that Liverpool could have put it up to Bayern no problem. We need to strengthen the squad though

Because under Rodgers we are going back to shanks' day.
